  2. An American man named Selva Delano Mudaliar was taken into custody by Thai police in Bangkok's Bang Phlat district yesterday. The man was previously on the run after being charged with multiple sex offenses in the United States. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) had been working with Thailand's Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) to extradite Mudaliar, a 37-year-old US citizen of Asian descent. He is reported to be 180 cm tall and weighs 90 kg. Mudaliar's criminal past includes numerous violent attacks, kidnapping, rape, and forcing his victims into sex trafficking, according to an article in Matichon. Mudaliar was charged with 11 counts related to sexual violence, assault, and sex trafficking, all of which could lead to life imprisonment. He avoided court appearances after being released on bail. Thailand had been Mudaliar's home for over three months, the FBI discovered. Since arriving in Thailand in February on a tourist visa, he had been moving around constantly, mostly staying in hotels and rented apartments throughout Bangkok. Mudaliar was known to frequent local nightlife spots and interact with both Thai and foreign women. He often invited women to his place, but there haven't been any reports of offenses committed against women in Thailand. After extensive investigation, the police nabbed Mudaliar in his Bangkok apartment on May 6. He will be extradited to the US for subsequent legal action. The CIB proudly revealed its successful operation, noting that it only took 10 days to locate and apprehend the foreign offender. 4. A 25-year-old woman was arrested for allegedly running a fraudulent investment scheme. She pretended to be a famous stock market expert, causing victims to lose over 21 million baht. The woman, known as Prakaikaew, was taken into custody today, May 7, at a house in the Uthai area of Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya province. The woman's arrest was made this morning by Police Major General Mantri Teskhan, Head of the Anti-Cybercrime Division. His team had a South Bangkok Criminal Court arrest warrant charging her with conspiracy to defraud the public, impersonation, and inputting false data into a computer. The scam was discovered in March 2023 when someone started using the Line app trying to trick individuals into investing in stock trading. The impersonator promised huge profits while faking the identity of respected stock market investor, Dr Paiboon Sereewiwattana. The tricked victims then transferred money, in total over 21 million baht across four different accounts. But when the victims asked to withdraw their funds, the fraudster demanded an extra 40% processing fee, revealing the scheme's fraudulent nature. As a result, the victims reported the scheme to the authorities. More investigations showed that Prakaikaew's bank account was among those used to receive money from the victims. The money was then sent to 16 other accounts. This discovery led to her arrest. During questioning, Prakaikaew confessed to opening bank accounts while being unemployed and lured by acquaintances in Poipet, Cambodia. She made 3,000 baht for each account opened. She also got friends to open accounts and was paid 1,000 baht each time. She had run away to Poipet, but her desire to be home led to her return to Thailand and subsequent arrest. She is now in the custody of Bang Rak Police Station, according to a report from Khaosod. This case shows the ongoing problem of online fraud and emphasizes the need for caution before investing money. It also teaches us how far fraudsters are eager to go, making use of tricks to fool unsuspecting individuals. The authorities continue to advise the public to ensure they verify the legitimacy of any investment opportunities before committing money. File photo for reference only. 6. The mystery surrounding the death of 46-year-old Nopadol in Buriram has stirred debates after his body was found in a dense, thorny forest on the outskirts of Nong Hwai village. His body, showing signs of animal scavenging and a burnt head, suggests an unusual death. People in the community have different opinions about how he died. Some think he suffered a heatstroke in the ongoing heatwave, while others suspect foul play due to the condition of his body. Nopadol's father, Udom, aged 68, suspects the villagers know more about his son's death but refuses to blame anyone. Police and rescue workers are thoroughly investigating the incident while the body has been sent for forensic analysis. Nopadol's body, which was already severely decayed, might have been lying there for about six days before it was found, causing both shock and confusion in the local community. The fact that Nopadol's head was burnt and his belongings like shoes and knife were scattered adds to the suspicion of foul play. The questionable circumstances led to immediate investigation by local authorities alerted by the sight of birds pecking at the remains. To understand the cause of death, the Siam United Rescue Foundation and officers from Nong Sai Police Station, in coordination with Deputy Investigator Veerawut Ratprakon, moved the body to the Police Hospital for in-depth autopsy examination. Following local customs, Nopadol's family held a ceremony to call his spirit back home. The discovery of Nopadol's body in an unreachable part of the forest added another aspect to the mystery. Reflecting on Nopadol's personal life, a local shop owner shared that Nopadol and his wife, known for their daily white liquor purchases, had a rocky relationship. This information, provided by the shopkeeper who often noticed the wife's bruised face, has prompted speculation about whether domestic issues led to Nopadol’s death. As of now, the police and forensic experts are continuing their investigations. File photo for reference only. Courtesy of Google -- 2024-05-07 Get our Daily Newsletter - Click HERE to subscribe

  8. A Thai food blogger has recently come under fire for posting a video on his Facebook page where he appeared to be consuming a parasite. The man admitted concocting the whole scenario as a ploy to gain popularity online. The man, not identified by name, hosts a Facebook page named เป๊กก่อนแดก (Peggondag), boasting over 20,000 followers. In the controversial video, he was seen indulging in raw meat and offal. Typical for Thai culture, especially in the Isaan provinces, where eating raw food is a widespread practice, he is witnessed eating raw beef, liver, tripe, and intestines dipped in spicy sauce along with various veggies. What truly alarmed his audience was when he presented a soft stringlike portion taken from the intestine as a parasite and proceeded to eat it. The video triggered a flood of negative comments as viewers expressed concerns over his health and disregard for medical advice on the risks of parasites in raw meat. Further, the controversy saw some commenters stereotyping Isaan locals negatively which stirred resentment among the people of the Isaan provinces. They sternly disagreed, claiming that not everyone from Isaan enjoys eating raw food. Amid the backlash, the blogger confessed that he had misidentified a soft intestinal tendon as a parasite to draw attention. He expressed regret for creating a stir in the online community. Despite the incident, the blogger continues to post videos of him eating raw food, expressing gratitude to his followers. He even asserts to have gained more followers in the aftermath of the incident. Photo courtesy of The Thaiger -- 2024-05-07 Get our Daily Newsletter - Click HERE to subscribe

  10. Sonthiya Sawasdee, a former advisor to the Parliamentary Commission on Law, Justice, and Human Rights, has lodged a complaint against Udom Taepanich, famously known as Nose, over his Netflix stand-up comedy special named Diew Special Super Soft Power. Sawasdee alleges that the content of the program might contain misleading content on Thailand's Sufficiency Economy philosophy. The Netflix special, streamed to its 91 million subscribers, is being scrutinized over concerns it might misrepresent the Thai economic philosophy. On May 6, Sawasdee formally presented his complaint to the Metropolitan Police Bureau Commander, Police Lieutenant General Thiti Saengsawang, requesting an investigation into Udom's performance. His main concerns were the authenticity of Udom's information, its alignment with the Thai economic approach, and the potential impact of the misinformation on public understanding of this economic principle. The Sufficiency Economy philosophy, integral to Thai culture, encourages moderation, prudence, and self-immunity for sustainable development. Sawasdee is keen on whether Nose’s comic delivery might have distorted the essence of this philosophy in his Netflix show. Sawasdee's complaint is prompted by the thought that Udom might have made a mockery of the philosophy for entertainment value. The probe he's requested hopes to establish if Udom discussed the Sufficiency Economy Philosophy, if his content was doctored for humor, and if such distorting information could cause public misunderstanding. Udom, famous for his comic touch, perhaps didn't foresee that his program would cause such intense reaction. His show, attracting millions of Netflix viewers, is critically analyzed for its adherence to Thai values. The Metropolitan Police Bureau has not yet commented on the issue. This situation underscores the thin line between freedom of speech and respect for culture in a country where entertainment and educational content often merge. The investigation will reveal if Udom's content was a harmless joke or an insult to a respected national principle, according to Khaosod. File photo for reference only. 13. DMS Launches New Home Testing Kits for Cervical Cancer File photo for reference only. Courtesy of Microsoft Bing The Thai Department of Medical Sciences (DMS) is urging women between the ages of 30 and 60 to regularly get screened for cervical cancer. This comes after reports reveal that around 10 million sexually active Thai women have never been tested for the Human Papillomavirus (HPV), which is a leading cause of cervical cancer. 14. The Thai Department of Medical Sciences (DMS) is urging women between the ages of 30 and 60 to regularly get screened for cervical cancer. This comes after reports reveal that around 10 million sexually active Thai women have never been tested for the Human Papillomavirus (HPV), which is a leading cause of cervical cancer. Cervical cancer is among the most common cancers affecting Thai women, with about 15 new cases being diagnosed daily and around 2,200 deaths annually. DMS Director-General Dr Yongyot Thammawut emphasized the necessity of regular screenings to significantly reduce the risk of cervical cancer. Despite the Health Ministry's advice for women over 30 to have a cervical cancer screening every five years, the adherence to this recommendation remains low. In Bangkok alone, only 30,000 women go for HPV screening tests each year, marking the lowest rate in the entire country. In a bid to address these issues and enhance testing accessibility, the DMS is introducing free HPV DNA self-sampling kits. Eligible women registered with the National Health Security Office can get these kits via the "Pao Tang" app or designated pickup locations. The self-sampling initiative, which is private and user-friendly, aims to encourage more women to participate in regular cervical cancer screening. This is particularly aimed at those who were previously reluctant to go for conventional tests at hospitals or healthcare centers. File photo for reference only.
