Facts about Loy Krathong:

http://www.thaivisa.com/loy-krathong.0.html

Loy Krathong Day is one of the most popular festivals of Thailand celebrated annually on the Full-Moon Day of the Twelfth Lunar Month. It takes place at a time when the weather is fine as the rainy season is over and there is a high water level all over the country.

"Loy" means "to float" and a "Krathong" is a lotus-shaped vessel made of banana leaves. The Krathong usually contains a candle, three joss-sticks, some flowers and coins.

Not to dampen the spirits too much, but many communities across Thailand (including mine) had a much more somber tone this year in deference to the cities that suffered severe flooding.

Our own town normally has a huge 4 to 5 day festival with rides, multiple concerts, fireworks, closed-off streets, etc.

This year it was all cancelled, except for one small stage with traditional Thai dancing. People, in far fewer numbers than usual, came to float their krathong and then left shortly thereafter.

We empathize with our fellow Thai cities that have and still are suffering due to the floods...

Yes I to noticed last night that Burriram although very busy with people and Police there were no floating displays on the water, not so many stalls and no big stage this year.

I only took a few pics: But since I have been in THailand I have over 2000 pics of various events but need to learn how to get them into gallery.

It was brilliant alst night. My first loi krathong festival and I went with some thai friends to JJ park ...i got there quite often and never realised it could look so beautiful with all the candles lighting up the lake. Brilliant!
