  1. Hi all,

i was just wandering if anybody here has any inside knowledge/information on MFLU in Chiang rai.

Visited earlier this week, amazed by the campus, would like to know how it is to work/live there etc.

    Thanks a lot

  2. Internet prices start at around b800, but you can't use non-Thai credit cards . . . :o

but you can pay at 7-11...i couldnt even use my bangkok bank visa.....

    2950 return...flying sunday, lets see!

  3. Thanks for the information, Gary.

I don't drink much so a watering hole isn't that important other than just to sit around and lie to each other. Of course you can do this in the clubhouse after a round of golf as well.

I would assume there is something of an expat community living in/around Loei city and there must be some way to meet this bunch. Golf has always worked for me in this regard. I expect it would in Loei as well.

    Again, thanks for the response.

i dont golf so i cannot tel you any great details, but:

9 hole course is about 10 km north of Loei, in an army camp. in town there is a driving range.

golf will get you to meet about 3 people around here...

watering hole, or the loei closest equivalent is gary's or christians' places in town, although do not expect too much in terms of a community, i'd say we're less than 20ish in a 15km radious..

    hope it helps,

yours holidaying in freezing greece :o

    EDIT:

Re: land costs, send me a PM when you are around, i have a hilly piece of land on a good road with electricity andwater (phonelines i belive less than 500m)

  4. :o well hi to everyone...............just a quick question anybody have a rough idea about the cost of land around the loei area..........visiting loei in june-july........so any help would be welcome.

    thankyou

    :D

    hello,

land can vary greatly around here,

are you looking for town, village, middle of nowhere, up the mountains?

chanot, nor sor 3, pobo tor, also make a massive difference.

electricity, water, road access as well.

am buying a rai 15km form town, electricity, road, nor sor 3, 60k/rai.

in town people ask whatever they want.....

throw in some info and i'll try to be more specific..

  5. I'm afraid that I will soon need a good dentist. One who actually has a x-ray machine and actually worries if you are in pain. I made the serious mistake of going to one in Loei the last time. NEVER again.

    hi gary,

i had some problems a few motnhs back and could not spare the time, so i tried one in Loei, who proved to be good, with x-ray, no pain for me, and spoke reasonable english as well. have not had any problems aafter a couple of visits.

if you r interested he is located at the centre of town, i believe the road is called ruam jai, near the corner with the 201 (close to the hospital, opposite the Muang Loei school, same side of the road as 7, about 50 metres.

    good luck

  6. I was assured by one of the locals that Tesco Lotus was open for business. I made the 55 kilometer journey and GUESS WHAT? It is NOT open. I was going to console myself by taking some KFC home and soon decided that if you are not on a motorcycle there is NO place to park. I went back home empty handed.

Tesco certainly not open, was there 30 min ago.

KFC parking arrangement is poor, but i just park at Tesco's and look angry if anyone tries to say anything... :o

As for Tesco, ugly rumours are surfacing which are not on the promising side..Word is (and that is word that i havent received personally..) that surveyors from tesco came around and left angry, since it appears that whoever has made the building to rent it to tesco, thought it appropriate top pocket 2 mil and produce a roof supported by steel half the diameter of the original specs...dont know what will happen, but will not go there on a windy day :D

if it opens , i'll post

  7. Costas !! It's a dream come true. I drove past the new store yesterday and indeed Tesco Lotus has their sign up. I said I wouldn't believe it until I saw it and there it was. It appears that it will open soon. My wife said the sign said the end of March. :D

it is indeed good news, however i would not be holding my breath since apparently the previous date was for march the 7th...so, its coming , in the summer, but as to when.... :o

  8. To all you ranchers out there,

OK I have just one question

What is the realistic monthly expense of living in the ranch there – marriage to a thai – don’t have any kid.

Will own house and car out right. I don’t smoke or drink, no bar scene, can eat 80% thai foods + 20% farang foods, and don’t have any thai relatives to support.

    Thanks in advance

    BKK90210 family :o

am married with no kids, renting and paying off a car.

dont drink, and it all amounts to less than 30k/month, but of course as others have pointed out, it can vary greatly!

  9. I drove past there today and they now have many signs up for different stores but NO Tesco Lotus signs. What makes you think it is going to be Tesco Lotus? Last rumor I heard is it was going to be a Big C. I doubt that it will be either because the building is too small. I have been hearing SOON from different farangs but have seen nothing. I would love to have either store in Loei.

indeed no Tesco lotus signs, however, in the soi just next to it there is an anouncement that , i am reliably informed, calls for all the shopkeepers/investors in the tesco 'complex' to have a meeting getting their act together, and that has a sign...

of course TiT and i'd be glad to see anything with cheese... :o

  10. Thanks Costas, any idea when it is opening its doors ?

I was travelling to Khon Kaen to go to Lotus before, 150Kms one way, Loei City = 62 Kms one way, much better.

I live in Amphur Phu Kradueng, having a Lotus in Loei will be good for me, as I'm sure it will be convenient for many people.

MK Suki too, great, maybe a Swensons ice cream outlet too......... :o

am afraid maigo that even living in town, i couldnt tell you when..but seeing that they are finalising the parking lots, and signs are being put up, i'd venture to say this summer...(remember of course that KFC were working on the place till late the night before it opened, cause they had given themselves a deadline...no such mistakes by Tesco...)

will post if i see it

  11. hi,

    can anyone please tell me,

if they have had their EU passport photos done inThailand,

where can i have mine taken?

i understand that there are lots of restrictions, and my embassy cannot help me as they havent had a case yet (according to them, we're less than 20 greeks here and noone did it so far)!!

so, anyone from a larger EU expat community might be able to help

    cheers

  12. Ok , one for the guys in Loei, I have heard that there is or will be a Tesco Lotus in Loei, and my wife said she saw a Tesco Lotus Lorry on the road towards Loei, and some people from Loei told her that there is or will be a Tesco Lotus there.

I know a few years ago Local store owners had protests against plans Tesco Lotus had of a Superstore in loei, has that changed?

When I was in Loei 1 Month ago I never saw any indication that there would be or is a Tesco Lotus.

I hope there is one actually, saves driving to Khon Kaen. :o

is not here yet,it is in the final stages of preparation,

MK has already put the sign up..

you'll find it by the kudpong water feature, next to KFC

PM or email me if you want more directions

  13. got hired in my second week,

    40k,

one term teaching PhDs (a third of a module)

    15k

    grand total of= 336k

cost related to work , about 15k

    so 320 ....

last job in england, 220k baht/month

    but here its sunny!

  14. I tried all the recipies and ingredients but the bread is still not light enough inside for my taste. My french bread is outstanding by the way

If you want a light bread, you need to increase the volume of you bread, this can only be done by adding bread improvers, available in all supermarkets around Thailand. If you want to have more information regarding details on the bread improvers just send me a private mail.

    Bangkokbaker

i would add that improvers are not the only way forward, although i have absolutely nothing against them. you basically need to increase the air incorporation in your dough mix- or in plain words- get more and bigger bubbles in there. That can be done with longer -preferably controlled- time as well as energy input in your mixing

  15. thanks all,

yes it is a NorSor 3 afterall.

since it appears that i can find nothing wrong with it, i'll be purchasing, and see what happens...60 k is not a great amount anyway, and if it sounds right...

    cheers

  16. hello all,

    been offered some land today,

dimensions of the plot are 18x80 m , so a bit sort of a rai.

Distance from main road (201, Loei-ChiangKhan), 1km, all asphalt, till 5 meters from the land.

Electricity and all, are there. land does not need filling.

The owner did not put the price up when hearing of a farang interested.

The land titles are (haven't seen them) ok, and not of the TT3 kind , but the next one down the list (forget the name..). have been advised that building is not a problem (not by the owner...)

trying to figure out whats the catch, since i think the asking price is on the low side (i think :o ) . Iam being asked for 60k Baht.

Does it make sense? Any suggestions/opinions/input from local-ish land 'owners'

    would be greatly appreciated..

    cheers

  17. same story here,

bought the car a month ago, never offered/discussed/told

    anything about red plates.

when i enquired (last time yesterday, a month later) how is the plate story progressing,

they said ' dont worry, we'll call you when we have news'....

lets see how long for i'll be driving with no plates at all....

  18. Living in Loei, monthly outgoings (roughly)

    3500 rent

    1500 ubc

    800 broadband

    1700 bills (elctric, phones, mobiles)

7500 food [250ish/day for food (for two people)]

    3000 petrol car maintenance

    2000 various shit

    =20000

do not drink, so here's a money saver...

    however,

12000 a month for the next 48 for paying off the car inflates the bill a bit...

    monthly income (2 people)= 25000 + 12000 + 5000 (extras)= 42000

so if am lucky will not need to dip into the savings before buying my tickets home...

    as stated earlier

no ubc, internet and other 'luxuries' and the bill can come down a lot....

    --------------------------------------------------------

    on medical

no medical /health/ as included in the wifes civil servicethingy.....i know it is not the best in the world, but for free healthcare it compares easily with the English cities i have stayed at...end point: if a major health issue hits us, i am off back to greece (which of course might not have the wide acceptance of the audience here, but is certainly the best i have had along with Spain)

  19. I will be able to buy a 29 inch TV anywhere, but what about 34" Sony tv's etc....

I am not sure if Big C and Lotus do these size of TV, I am not really interested in a Projection TV, just a CRTV.  ( normal tv set )

Is there a Sony shop in Udon Thani, or any specialist shops?

    Thanks guys.  :o

just today i saw a real monster in Loei...

an LG 54" but no price showing...

Ruam jai near the top towards the junction with the 201

they also usually have more regular sizes

  20. Sorry I can't help... I prefer my food dead...  :D

    totster  :D

You don't enjoy the warm glow of achievement after wresting with your food and winning? :D

Ok, so I think I understand... all yoghurt is alive, just some are more alive, right? :o

So if I buy a tub of Nestle Strawberry or something... it's half, alive?

Doesn't put up quite as big a fight... for newbies??

    :D

if you buy a tub of yoghurt that does not say live, than you are getting the standard...using the fridge does you anti-bacterial fight for you.

if you buy one that says live, it has been fortified with selected organisms that are known to alter -to the better of your health- the balance of microbial flora in your guts, hence the advertising

  21. by definition all yoghurt is live. whether it says so on the label or not,

commercial milk -yoghurt to be- is first pasteurised (not sterilised)

and all bacterial cultures are added afterwards. They are then stopped by refrigeration.

what is advertised as 'live' simply contains bacteria that are greater in numbers and also have been selected because of a proven record of being beneficial to the digestive track..

    there is no 'dead' yoghurt
