  1. Hi Guys. I will be coming to Nakhon Sawan city for 3 days in October, probably stay at Pimarn hotel.

My g/friend wants me to see her parents home in Tha Tako, :o

What i would like to know .......Is there other alternative hotels nearer Tha Tako??

What transport options do I have if I stay at hotel???

    James

I think you will be out of luck finding a hotel in Tha Tako, I can't remember seeing any there. I used to live just down the road (20 odd km) in Tak Fa

There are lots of busses back and forth to Nakhon, but your probaly better off hiring a car or getting someone to pick you up.

  2. OK I'll be straight up here - I am not a crop farmer, I know very little about maize and even less about other crops. Pigs I can do but if it involves planting I'm not your man.

OK that disclaimer over - Who knows anything about maize pickers(the mechanical type) not a conbine harvester. Specifically the tractor mounted/towed 2 row variety. Can they work on a steep incline? Prices? availability? The information is for a family member who has 50 rai of maize on hilly land. Anybody got any recommendations?

My inclination is that a mechanical maize picker would only work on flat land - am I wrong?

I've only ever seen the combine ones. They don't work out any cheaper but are popular due to the time saving aspect of them, they also they laeve a much higher percentage of waste maize on the ground. My brother-in-law usualy takes a day going over the land picking the waste up after the combi has been through. Sorry don't know about the hilly ground as it's flat as a pankace around us.
  3. It is indeed strange as the last post clearly indicated new posts should have been made in July after his return to Thailand. The closest I see for a location is probably the below post. I would expect the Loei Agricultural Department might be aware of his presence/location.

Maizefarmer, it is good to have you back again, I was hoping you were on some tropical island with your family. You posted you are on the North East side of Phu Kradung National Park. From what I can see from my Think Map that is just up Hi-way 201 from Amphoe Phu Pha Man in Khon Kaen. That is not all that far from where my wife cousins live. As a matter of fact last New Year I drove down that Hi-way from Loei to Amphoe Phu Pha Man. I am quite often , well once or twice a year visiting my wife's cousins, so next time if you would like a visitor maybe I could drop bye and see your operation, I promise I would not stay to long, and since I'm going home to Canada for a week or so and then I start teaching again it would be the fall at the earlist. Once again glad to have you back. Issangeorge.

You're close - you'll drive right past unless you know exactly where to turn off. Closer to the time drop me a PM - I'll send you directions.

Lopburi,I believe Random Chances has his address as he was on the point of visiting him just before his accident. Unfortunately he seems to be offline since his return to England.

If someone has the time or patience to trail back through his posts I think he pinpointed his address at some point either to RC or to one of the others who were planning to visit him.

If someone can find his address to within a few miles I'm sure Gary A, myself or others in Udon, Loei will volunteer to pay a visit.

I had a PM from him back in April, but as I have'nt been online much was way out of date by the time I read it. Personaly I think he's just either taking a break or just got fed up with posting. I know he was fed up with what he percived as the constant bikkering from some members.

I think I have his e-mail address somewhere, I'll send him a line and let you all know if there is a reply.

  5. Until Maizefarmer or Random chances returns to posting here, you might do well to do a search of their previous posts on this subject. Here is one such thread:

    http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/index.php?sh...72&hl=dairy

yeah I read a few before posting here

tried to contact them as well, but in vain

as I could see from other posts others have tried as well

Hi all, sorry have'nt been online much. I've just got internet broadband so mabyeI'll be on a bit more.

Ok first is is there anywhere you can sell the milk?

The biggest thing with Dairy is forage, you have to have a good supply of good quality forage, it really cuts into your profits if you have to buy it so you need the land to grow your own. For 10-20 head you'll probaly need 10-20 rai. If done right it can be very profitable, looking back to when we had the farm the biggest profits came when we got the forage right, basicaly with good home grown forage your yield go's up and your costs go down. There's loads writen here on forage

Transport costs to and from the dairy add up as well if they don't collect, who's going to be doing the actual work, if you're just looking for something to run it's self then it probaly wont work.

Have you any experiance in buying cattle ? Generaly don't buy anything if it's not pregnant and get the pregnancy checked by a vet, personaly I'd go for cattle up to their 4-5 pregnancy, they generaly are at thier prime about the 4th. If you can quarrentine any new cattle and get a blood check done on them before mixing with the herd.

  6. I'll just add a bit to MF's post.

Try to buy one thats pregnant, get it checked by a vet to verify this. At least then you know it is capable of pregnancey. With only one cow you might have problems deciding when it's on heat as the easiest way to tell is that an other cow will mount them....no pregnancy = no milk.

Calfs are feching next to nothing at the moment, but this might change and at least you'll have the milk, probaly far more that you will need :o

  7. Both beef and milk cattle prices are very depressed at the moment, although that does sound cheap.

Around here a milker is fetching just a bit over beef prices, you can pick semi decent ones up for less than 20,000, a pregnant one, depending on when it was dried off does'nt nesseseraly go for that much, for example if it was milked for a long time and had trouble getting pregnant it might of been dried off as soon as it was pregnant giving you a 6 months or more wait until it produces milk.

Personaly as far as milk goes I would'nt bother buying anything less than 6 months pregnant. My brother in law bought a 8-10 month ( by the looks of it) old beef calf yesterday for 4,000 bhat !!!

  8. The machine sounds all right, however I was thinking of spending about 150-200'000 baht.
You'll be very lucky, you'd struggle to by a refurbished Kubuta for that. There's dealers all over the place for refurbished Fords. If you tell us where you are someone might be able to give you an idea

I'll move this over to the farming forum, you'll probaly get a better responce

  9. What would they do with it - livestock?

I wsih you well and hope you can get back, and pick up from where you left off - to give iut another go and make a success of it.

They want it for dairy, apparently they have a factory near here and the milk would go straight to there.

I'm not really sure what I'll do when I get back. I don't think I want to have to rely on large sacle dairy, the profits can be really good, mabye doing it on a smaller scale, growing crops/forage for support.

  10. RDC - good to hear from you. I'm just fine. Back to as normal as I can be and ###### well looking forward to getting back home for Saturday. What's the latest with youself now - back in the UK yet or still packing? Still moderating - or has the thankless task been handed to some other poor soul!

    MF

Yea, I'm still here mate, booked a flight back to UK for the end of the month. Duch Mill are interested in renting the farm off me while I'm gone. Shame I never made it up there. We'll try and sort something out next time I'm back
  11. OK guy's try and stay on topic, I see some othe Mod has already been in and cleaned up a few posts.

I started this forum for those of us with an intrest in farming to share theorys, ideas and to try and help each other.

If someone has a theroy/idea/suggestion they are welcome to post it if you don't like it then either ignore it or attack the idea, not the poster.

This is supposed to be a discussion forum...we discuss things. The odd contentious off the wall idea is quite healthy in my opinion as it can spark more debate.

Please don't reply to this post as hopefully it will be the last one "off topic" in this thread.

Ya Khoan (my transliteration - don't know the English name) would probably be my choice. Find someone who has some (it grows naturally in wet grassland areas everywhere); cut it by hand in lengths of 10" (you should get it free); scatter it on the land and plough it in with a 7-disk harrower. To improve the cultivation, you can first place it in a bit of a pile (not too deep), cover it with rice sacks, and water for a couple of days to encourage root growth, then scatter as before on the land before ploughing it in.

That sounds very much like Pangular (SP) Grass, except for the growing wild bit. It likes the wet, does'nt seed so you have to plant it the same way it's great if you can grow it, you won't go far wrong with Ruzi either.

Your probaly going to be better off with a cut and carry system rather than grazing the horses as has been mentioned during wet season you could have problems with the hoofs. How many are you thinking of keeping ?

I had'nt thought about the medical aspects but Bina's right, you'd need to do regular anti parasite jabs/pills or whatever. Have you thought about where your going to get stock from ? Chok Chai farm keeps many horses and they would probaly sell some (as they do cattle) but would be expensive.

  13. Hi RC

As you can see from my post above - something happened in cyberspace and my message was lost. Glad to say it was not a lengthy reply, so here it is again:

Yea I was going to delete it , but did'nt know wether you'd seen it or not. I't gone now.

Yes your right some of the title deeds won't be on record with the land ofice, I'm not sure which ones I don't think it's just chanot's mabye Nor Sor Sam's as well.

Oh I edited your and xerostars "multi quotes" out as they were getting a bit lenghty
