The price has risen because the cask wine producers were exploiting a loophole in the law that taxed 'fruit wines' lower than regular wines. So by adding fruit ( or possibly just sticking a label on the bottle saying 'fruit wine') they paid less duty and so could charged less. our puritanical military dictators just closed that loophole meaning all wine is now taxed at the punitive rate of 450% which is scandalous.

I believe his details are
James Brown aka 'Bruno'
from Shepperton
48 years old
has a grown up daughter in the UK
died of mouth/throat cancer
good bloke
enjoyed his beer with a cigarette a little too much
Thank you Loaded, that fills in a few gaps and seems to sum it up neatly. Anyway he was certainly a character and added to the rich tapestry of life here.

I've been holding off to see if anyone who knew 'Bruno' better than I would post, but his many friends are probably not Thai Visa-ites. Bruno (I've no idea what his surname was and judging by the photo which was forwarded to me - neither did the Funeral Director), was an affable man who frequented my pub and just about every other bar on and around Loi Kroh Rd. He was a likeable rogue with a winning smile and cheerful nature. I am unaware as to what killed him, but his battles with the demon drink were ones he usually lost. Most recently he drank at Gecko's and a few other places.
If anyone who knew him better can post a more fitting obituary, I would love to read it.
Until then, Rest In Peace my old friend.

I also knew Dennis for most of the 25 years I have been coming and going to CM. He was a pillar of the expat community, a real character, known and liked by everyone. I used to enjoy a beer or two with him occasionally and when I had my pub I had his trekking sticks and lemon juicers etc on consignment. The trekking sticks were his invention, but the lovely story that went with it was, If I remember correctly, from the imagination of an American friend of his.
For those unfamiliar with this fine product and others that Dennis produced, take look at this video:-
Dennis: I never did find those tongs you said you consigned to me...and later charged me for, ....but that, and you, were all part of my Thailand experience! Whether you go to a Great Synagogue, Great Temple or are just Resting for the first time in many a long year, may that Rest be In Peace.

Thank you all for your posts, my colleague had to wait a considerable amount of time for her re-entry permit, which is fine is you are not working, but she is! Understandably many people simply don't trust immigration so don't want to leave things to chance at CM airport, even though most people seem to thing its safe to do so.

Does anyone know what the queues are like at Promenada now that the Airport office is closed? I have a colleague who needs to get a re-entry permit in the morning. Thanks for any advice.

Sadly he was electrocuted at home in Chiang Mai on Saturday whilst fixing some ceiling wiring. You can find more details about Andrew on his Facebook page which is being kept open. The funeral and funeral rites are this week and the details are there too. Andrew was a local businessperson, travel writer and cyclist. He was well known as the owner of the 1-stop Thailand website. I've known him for 7 years and we would cycle together from time to time. He was so full of knowledge (and opinion) about Thai current affairs, Chiang Mai travel and mountain biking that I found him to be a positive and fascinating man. He leaves behind a wife and two young children. Condolences to all who loved him.
I've only just read this tragic news. Andrew used to come into my pub on occasions and when we closed he offered me a place on a TEFL course he part owned. He also got me to write a report for him on how to open a pub in CM when I had nothing else to do. The last time I spoke to him was at the Wales- South Africa rugby world cup match earlier this year. He will be sadly missed by the Expat community. My thoughts and prayers are with his family

We want to work as volonteers in Mae Hong Son, that's why we would like to stay longer.
Working of any sort in Thailand is not permitted with just a tourist visa. If you want to work for some volunteer organization in Thailand you should check with them about visa & work permit requirements.
It is because people like you are working illegally - and as stated above, volunteering is considered work - that successive Thai governments have progressively tightened up on arrangements for tourists and made it very difficult for them to stay for long holidays. If you wish to volunteer, please apply for the correct visa. If they wont give you one, try another country, there are places with much greater need than Thailand.
Yes, one must obtain a work permit to work even as a volunteer. But, no, volunteers and English teachers are not the reason for the "tightening up" that is forcing out foreigners who were/are living here spending foreign capital into the local economy. I'd explain why, but it seems discussing the real reasons is not permitted. In any case, yes, request that your organization provide you with the paperwork to get the proper visa. Offer to pay for the cost of an attorney, to prepare the paperwork for them.
Are you sure you are not being overly cryptic here. You suggest that my reason is incorrect but it sounds like you are getting at the usual anti-foreigner conspirators in the ruling elite theory, without actually saying so.

I use the prefix 00500 to call UK, I find them as cheap as anyone. I know that does not directly answer your question, but I would take it into account anyway.

No guarantee that Vasu will be open over Songkran though, especially now it is a bank holiday.

70 hardly constitutes 'older person' nowadays, Heck you make him sound like he's 90. Surely if he's a former government official and as you say 'capable', he can organise himself. Presumably he can use the internet. Get him to read a few reviews on Booking.com, Trip Advisor or the Thai Visa favoured Agoda.com and he can make his own decisions.

Interesting that the ethnic Chinese elite are feeling confident enough - cocky enough- to mount a major celebration of their Chinese identity this year. Normally Chinese New Year is quite quiet and understated as the Elite tries to stress its 'Thainess'

I use Hermesetas from UK until I run out after each trip home, then I use Equal tablets which I find fine. If you worry about the health effects of any food products here in Thailand you might as well go home as we know pretty much everything is riddled with chemicals, pesticides, hormones and heaven knows what else.

looks like the military have a big job to do and it will take years at this rate to even think about elections
I'm sure that fact has occurred to them -indeed it may have occurred to them before yesterday.........
Bangkok Post still haven't used the word 'bomb' and nothing has been updated for over 3 hours....news service? My arse.
Don't forget we are living under a military <snip> and news is censored. You couldn't believe much of what you read in the papers before the coup, now you can't believe anything except the football results. Best to stick to Thai Visa for your news.

"He suggested asking all the Thai people what they really want, and not just asking certain groups, and jumping into conclusion."
These nasty interfering foreigners have a word for asking all their people what they really want The word is 'ELECTIONS' The nasty interfering foreigners have pointed out that an overthrow of the democratically elected government at the end of a gun barrel because it suited 'certain groups' is morally and ethically wrong. But then Gen. Prayuth thinks that 'Ethics' is a county to the north east of London or if you prefer a county in New York state.

two men hurling a bottle at a female tourist
Stay classy Thailand .... thai men are the best .... might explain why there are so Thai women prefer same sex relationships
Do you have any evidence that there any more Thai women in 'same sex' relationships, than Thai men, or than women in other countries - or have you just plucked that one out of the air to support your argument?
I'm afraid if this woman caused these 'flower sellers' to lose face, then her resultant injury was always on the cards and if she didn't read her guidebook and realise this, she should have stuck to holidaying in Benidorm. These were street spivs not university professors. not all Thai men are like that, in fact most aren't. Incompetent, yes, violent, no.

Dr. Keerati at Bumrungrad. He did my cataract surgery. He was conservative in his suggestions. He is very personable had fellowship at Harvard Medical school. Everyone I've recommended has loved him-very personable, doesn't rush you and was very patient with me--I ask questions when my health is involved like I am writing a book.
Can you give us a rough idea of how much a consultation and prescription from Dr Keerai might cost, Orchidlady?

er? All great stuff but not really specifically relevant to the Bangkok forum

53 year old German woman rebukes a Thai in the inimitable German fashion.....er, yes,,,,, You 'diss' a Thai and make them lose face - no matter what they were doing, and this kind of response is always a possibility. As Katana says, given this Frau's pugnacious attitude, Koh Tao may not be the ideal next destination!

If I remember correctly even their 'safe' limit of 100 parts per billion is twice that of the EU.

This 'impeachment' proves, if proof were needed, that the army did not step in to 'rescue' the country from the anarchy of the protests, but was part of an organised plot by the Ruling Elite to get rid of the Shinawatras once and for all because their snouts had been removed form the trough and new ones allowed to snaffle up the goodies.
Whether the military government was 'legal' in a Thai sense is not relevent and can't be discussed, but what is clear is that any impartial body would have agreed that Yingluck could not be 'impeached' because she was no longer in office - she was, in effect, impeached by the end of Prayuths gun barrel some months ago. but a parliament stuffed full of Prayuths unelected cronies, was never going to do anything other than get rid of Yingluck. The mnost disgraceful part of the whole proceeding was that Yingluck was not even allowed to hold a press conference afterwards to state her point of view. The army prevented it from happening.
The next job of the puppet parliament is to ban the Puea Thai party because with or without the Shins, PT would win the next election and that, Prayuth and his paymasters cannot countenance.

I've always wondered, HOW and WHERE the government announces these kinds of public hearings, and thus who if anyone attends them?
In years of living here, I can't recall ever being informed about such a hearing IN ADVANCE and thus having an opportunity to attend.
Makes me wonder if it's any better for ordinary Thais, or are they kept in the dark also?
Ordinary Thais are kept in the dark about everything. 'Public hearings' are for the developers and are there to discuss how to dispossess the required land from the squatters and tenants. The decision as to whether to proceed will be determined by how many bungs are available.
I am almost ready to Pull the plug and leave

Medical insurance is a con. They take your premiums when your young and fit and then throw you on the scrap heap when you get older and might need to claim on it - another illusion of the American 'dream'. Thailand is becoming very expensive unless you live at the rock bottom - eating market food, drinking laew kao and living in a chicken shack.
I would try Vietnam, Ban Phe Dezza - I was there in the Summer - Vung Tau a couple of hours South East of Saigon has a large expat Aussie community - mainly elderly, living out their remaining years with cheap Aussie and Vietnamese food, pretty girls who dont demand too much, amazingly cheap beer and very liberal visa policies. The only drawback that I found was that everyone smokes, which was problem but if it ticks all the other boxes for you.....
