  1. new laptop:  Intel 8th or 10 gen chip OR Amd Ryzen 3xxx or 4xxx series.  Acer, Asus, Dell, or HP should be.  Acer is pretty ubiquitous and easy to repair or find replacement parts when it gets older.  8gb ram minimum, 12+GB recommended (if it comes with 4gb, just buy 8gb stick and immediately upgrade).   SSD drive a must, preferably Nvme m.2 ssd drive as primary.  You can have hdd as secondary drive.   But why not just have 2 ssds and sell off the hdd?

Also recommend that you try to get laptop that has a side vent or vent in back such that you can add a vacuum suction cooler fan to it.   The laptops that have 100% of vents on the bottom only is poor ventilation strategy IMO.

And try to get one where the ram / hdd has an access panel where you can easily open it and upgrade without having to take off the whole bottom panel.   Again, this is more difficult because newer models seem to be pushing towards unibody model.

    ----

Re your old laptop:  replace hdd with ssd and increase ram.   put windows 10 ltsc on it.   Then it will run very fast, and can be used as a spare.  The old hdd can be used as extra space; can put it in DVD HDD tray as a spare drive.  (OS + main programs are installed on the SSD).  Or give it to someone.

I transferred Baht 400K in the beginning of July to start the seasoning time required for my Non-O ME visa I got at the Thai Embassy in Los Angeles in March - right before they shut down. Transferwise wanted ~122 USD for the transaction fees. My brokerage firm only wanted $25 USD - obvious which choice I used.

TW also puts the final THB amount you would receive.  And can give you a date-certain receipt.

The brokerage option....what was the final THB amount you received and how long did it take?   and how did that compare with what TW has quoted (final THB amount + deposit date)?

  3. actually, your screenshot is very lacking.   I don't know which page of the payment process that is.

You have not explained how you are paying for the transfer (debit card, ach, local bank transfer, swift transfer).

You did not disclose the origin country + currency.   I assume Thai bank + THB is destination country.

You are likely paying via bank transfer or swift transfer, which TW would have given you some sort of reference # to put in the "for further credit", "reference", or "memo" section of the transfer (the one that you send from your origin bank to transferwise).

    -----

There are a lot of factors depending on origin country, origin currency, method of payment, and reason for transfer.    So the more info you can provide about the full sequence, the better other people can help.

Hi all, I am currently in the US, I am not able to tranfer money via Transferwise.

Last week I first started using Transferwise sending money from Chase bank to Kasikorn bank and after 1 day of checking the transaction failed and Transferwise deactivated my account.

Second attempt setting up another account and this time sending money from Wells Fargo bank to Bangkok bank and I am frustrated that Transferwise deactivated my account again.

Have I done anything wrong? Any other alternative besides Transferwise?     Thank You.

I assumed you called or emailed TW support.  What reason did TW give for deactivating the account (the first one)?   This was after verifying the account?

There is WorldRemit.   But you won't get the international-looking deposit of funds.   (or maybe they do that now).

TW if you mark reason for transfer as:  "funds for long term stay in Thailand" they will attempt to deposit it as an international transfer.   If you setup to get SMS alerts whenever international transfer is received, it would look like this:

John Doe has transferred THB16,202.34 (THB16,[email protected] - THB0.00) from abroad into 123XXX890

  5. Happened to a friend in Chumphon years ago.   It was either 3 months or 6 months.    It is not a fee, just an advance on the monthly bill.  He was happy to do so, otherwise he would have no internet.   I think it was back when ASDL was still a thing.

I had to pay extra to run extra ASDL cable from the local switchbox.  Some 2200 baht, but then over 1000 baht was returned to me as they overestimated the amount of cable needed.

Thanks for letting me know that we are now supposed to get 1000Mbps / 100 Mbps up.  (I think I am still on the 200/200 plan, lol.   They don't seem to automatically upgrade you on the same monthly plan, unless you specifically ask.

I think now if you pay 3 months in advance online, you get 3% discount.

You mean from the backup that everyone should have but usually do not have?

Failed hard drives are expensive to recover from, with little guarantee of successful recovery.   The best you can hope for is that you buy a new hard drive and keep trying to get old one to connect (different sata to USB3 connector and/or different computer).

Once the old one connects successfully, you have the new one (or space on the computer hard drive) to copy the contents.    DO NOT disconnect the old drive until you have copied all of the contents over.

    3. Several poster's mention that in future I could get a 1 year multi entry non-o visa from Savannakhet or Ho Chi Minh City.  Is this some special case work-around/secret visa loophole that means only these 2 locations are issuing this golden 1 year visa?

Other locations do issue SE/ME non-o visa for visiting Thai family, but these two locations currently do not require any financial proof (e.g. ฿200k equivalent in bank for SE / ฿400k ME). They have not done so for several years now.  I personally suspect this phenomenon is due to:

    • the consulate's physical proximity to Thailand,
    • the income level of many natives who may be married to Thai nationals,  and it also considers that
    • the chance of fraud is minimal to keep families together.

Penang, Malaysia, for example, does also issue ME non-o visa for visiting Thai family (including de-facto marriage), but requires financial proof.   But it can be with non-Thai bank statements, if the currency is in USD, EUR, MYR and maybe a couple of other major currencies, or conversion properly notated.

Also noteworthy, on the first attempt (Penang), you may only receive a SE non-o visa if you've never had non-o before.  On subsequent attempts the ME non-o should be no problem.

update bankbook - withdraw 1000 baht?

At CDM/ATM you can deposit/withdraw ฿100.   With online/mobile banking you can transfer 1 baht, or even 1 satang. (you can even have someone else deposit to your account).   ATM also you can do acct to acct transfer (same bank or to other thai bank).

    Then update your bank book.

In case you have a wallet registered with a Thai ID, would it be possible to my own bank account ?

Yes, refund from the wallet is pretty straightforward process.

They give you the option to select the bank name and put the bank account # and the name on the account.  Then 1-2 days to "confirm" the request, then 1-2 days to process the refund into your account.

  10. You can pay via lazada digital goods category.

And they have promotion with ฿50 coupon if you use this code when you checkout LZDUTL50

    ---

Also can pay via the PEA app (which may require OTP) or via your Thai bank.   You can also have someone else pay for you.  They just need the barcode, which can be from the printed receipt, or if you have PEA app, the app can re-generate the barcode.

And someone else can add your meter to their acct temporarily to pay it.  You can send PM

If it really is a quarantine, then is there any way around it? Can I first go from BKK to another place for 1-2 days, and then to Phuket?

You could drive to where you need to go.    But most of the people I know that traveled either stayed with family or had a 2nd place to stay.     It would be tricky to try and rent a guesthouse at this time.

As said it is normal from most countries (assume you are UK with normal instant payment?).  From USA all payments to Bangkok Bank are at 1400 or a bit after local time.

Funded with debit card.  ACH-based funding used to be quick (next morning) but now they are quoting 3-5 day window.

Funding by debit card is completed much faster.  I was actually shocked it would be 10:00 when they estimated the payment (normally it is 01:00 or 03:00 in morning.  Or 3-4 hours from payment.)

But there is a big difference between "hey, there is a delay in paying you out" (which they have done in the past) and "hey, we paid you already, here is our version of a receipt. Take it to the bank and check with them."

As I'm typing this (after sending another email to TW support that it was not received and i spoke with customer support), just got SMS that funds arrived in acct [(THB12,[email protected] - THB0.00)from abroad); very weird as that only happens when i have SWIFT transfer. But timestamp was 14:02.  Logged in and see 14:01 deposit in acct and it says International Transfer.

I did mark the reason for transfer as being "funds for long term stay in Thailand".   I wonder if this changes how they send the funds so that it is coded differently in the account.  Normally i state "general living expenses".

What reason are you guys stating in the "reason for transfer " section?

  13. I have a situation where THB was supposed to arrive about 10:00 today and at 08:44 i get "transfer sent" notification + email.

In the past, TW has been very quick and when they say "transfer sent", the money is in the Thai bank account that minute or the next minute.  I've received money via TW to this acct several times before.

I'm a little nervous as its been over 3 hours and nothing is showing in the bank account (bangkok bank).

I'm wondering if others have had issues of delayed payment from TW.  I'm not believing their excuse that "bank side may delay the payment".  I've never seen a situation where a domestic Thai bank transfer has been "delayed".

Anyone else having delays receiving money with TW recently?

I tried using the PEA app this morning to " Report Outage " it checked my location , asked what the problem was , " No Electricity in the House " pressed continue , I had to insert a photo , what of I do not know , but I couldn't get passed this stage.

That "report outage" feature in the app has been broken for some time now.   But you can email [email protected] with your name, google maps location (or address), callback number, and brief description of problem.  They reply pretty quickly.

Was able to pay my bill about 2-3 days after the meter was checked via the app.  Used either BBL or KPlus bank option.

Actually, you should be using a password manager such as 1Password, BitWarden, LassPass, KeePass, etc  And these would integrate into all major browsers, plus have encryption of all passwords, and cloud backup.   You would only need to keep track of ONE master password and maybe some keyfile.

i dont have solid state drive

You should consider upgrading.   And add at least 4gb RAM.   I would go for 8GB stick if it will fit.

I have 20gb and can use 50-60% usage, but that is running a 20+ tabs in 1-2 browsers, plus several other programs running.

For 10 grand I'd offer her an interest free loan. I've done it in the past (with family) and actually got the money back.

I offered a bailout that she accepted quite graciously.   My interest is free juice.   And I bring my own fruit at least 1/2 the time.  She can pay off principle-only in 3 months.

  17. A local woman with a juice stand appeared very stressed out a couple of weeks ago.  Then she explained to me she had taken out a private loan for 10,000 for a family emergency.  The terms of the loan were that if she didn't pay in full after 10 or 20 days, then she pays 1% interest (100) per day until the loan is paid in full.  And that interest was due every 10 days.  So every 10 days, she made interest-only payment of 1000 baht.  she had paid some 6k in interest already.   I thought about her total avg monthly income, and I've come to the conclusion that she would never be able pay that loan off unless she borrowed again or somehow got the 10k from someone.   And the lender didn't seem incentivized in the slightest to reduce or waive any interest after covid-19 restrictions like curfew and real economic slowdown took place.

I thought those loan terms were insane.  But when you are really desperate, the temptation towards taking a deal like that becomes harder to resist for some people.  I wanted to know how pervasive these type of deals are.
