  1. Wellcom A88 8900bt at MBK Android 2.1 capacitive screen

The A88 seems impressive. Sometimes the online description is off on a few details. I think the webmaster just copy and paste from the previous phone's details, but whatever.

I need to find a wellcom store in phuket. Is there one in Big C?

also wellcom has a mini tablet A800 with android 2.2 . It seems to be the iphone 4 clone version, similar to the i858 from i-mobile. It looks like according to the photo, that the entire desktop can be landscape, instead of only horizontal. I will try to find this in the wellcom store, if i can find the store.

If i could get Android 2.1 out of the box for the other i-mobile or in the shop, I then it becomes a no-brainer I'd have to take a look in store.

i confirmed yesterday that the imobile i858 has android 2.1 natively at the i-mobile shop. i didn't ask about android 2.2. But for me, 2.1 at least will be great for skype.

  2. i recommend tmobile for phone service. prepaid internet hard to find, as all the carriers want to lock you in month to month. only usa does this foolishness. you could also do pagepluscellular, but you'd have to find a used or new verizon phone that is not prepaid phone (they closed that loophole about 10 months ago - you could walk into a walmart and buy a prepaid verizon phone for $20. and then get pageplus unlimited talk text plan for $40/mo )

  3. No, you cannot. I have asked Hutch about this and they explained it pretty well. Hutch has a strange CDMA system. Although they are CDMA phones they use a SIM card because Thais like to choose their numbers. Hutch had to make this accommodation to get customers here. US CDMA phones from Verizon and Sprint cannot accept a sim card so they cannot be used on Hutch's network. Also, the Verizon BBs that use a sim card, the sim card is only for the GSM radio, not the CDMA one, so you cannot use those devices either. You need to buy CDMA phones made specifically for Hutch that accept Hutch's sim cards.

Can't you buy a CDMA phone that has a CDMA sim card slot?

  4. If blocked there would be a cover page providing information. This is likely a block by owner on contact with Thai IP address for possible legal reasons (in view of what they seem to be selling).

Rare Thai Buddhist amulets and Talismans Great-Value Muaythai Boxing shorts and gears Discount center of Asian products.
Billionmore.com has the estimated value of $6,110 and ranks # 963,520 in the World (Alexa). With the daily ads revenue: $3 and pageviews per day: 175. The website is hosted on server that locates in Chicago IL United States.

Understood. Didnt consider that the owner would do this, but it would make sense. Good to see that. Could you provide us with a website you know for sure is blocked? I'd like to see what the blocked webpage looks like.

I got through okay, probably a glitch/traffic issue.

Can you provide us with your Internet Service Provider?

  5. I was attempting to access http://www.billionmore.com/article/article.php?id=2 . My browser showed that it connected to the site and then was waiting for a reply, then "site is unavailable" screen came up. I quickly checked other known websites and saw that my internet was working just fine. So I asked my friend in the USA to check the link he sent me, he said it came right up. I decided to connect to connect to a VPS (virtual private server - like an always on remote desktop) and try it through there. Website came right up.

I use CAT CDMA in Phuket.

My girlfriend said that Lek Lai is a rare metal and hard to find in thailand. I suspected this may be the reason. But I never had censorship issues in the past, so please advise.

  6. hondas +70% market share in LOS is simple, they made and sold 4 stroke decades before anyone else. low power, but reliable and no expensive 2stroke oil to take care of.

today quality is on par or better with some other brands, but Hondas reputation is still rock solid

big bikes kwaker has 99% of the market, due to only thai made/non importduty bike prices. wonder how long the others are going to allow kwaker to build their reputation in LOS?

Where can i find a Kwaker. I've never heard of this brand or model. Im in patong beach, phuket.

  7. I agree with what you say, but there is a point after which quality is sufficiently good (and quality differences are sufficiently small), that other factors take over in the decision of which motorbike from which manufacturer to buy. In the case of most small size motorbikes, Honda and Yamaha fit in that category -- both produce high quality small motorbikes, and with respect to quality one would not make a bad choice selecting either one. Then, features, style, design, etc. become the factors that determine which motorbike you should buy. If Honda did not make the PCX, I would own a Nouvo Elegance today and be very satisfied with the motorbike from a quality perspective. In all other respects, however, the PCX is the clear winner (except, of course, price). It doesn't happen often, but it is nice when choices/decisions are this easy -- just pick what you really like, and you will have made the right choice (for you).

yes. With quality being comparable, then the choice is easy. I think its a cultural thing as to why Japanese manufacturers have higher quality than the USA equivalent. In the USA, it's about "What is the least amount of $$ i can manufacture this product for?" or "How much can I get the consumer to pay for this?" In Japan, it's "Did we make sure everything is working 110%?" Another words, JP images of perfection tend to revolve around quality, and USA images of perfection tend to revolve around the bottom line (profitability)

It might be worth noting that Honda Thailand have been involved in some illegal trade practises in Thailand.

    Could you elaborate please?

  8. From Patong head over the hill towards Karon Beach. at the Karon Circle take the left exit through Karon Village, keep on going through Kata main road (not beach road) over the next hill to Chalong Circle, first exit, and Home Pro Village is about 70m on the left. Villa Market is in HomePro Village.

Suggestion ... before you go to Villa Market, have a look in the Patong Deli on Rat-u-tit Road, past the main Post Office.

I can add a bit to the directions. From patong, follow the signs to the big budda. You'll know if you passed the HomePro village if you passed the big budda. But it's kind of hard to miss after the Chalong Circle (the one that is a modified round-about. You must go one-way first and then make a u-turn 50m up. Of course to get to Home Pro, just continue straight, no u-turn)

I am happy to report that I FOUND the quinoa at the Villa Market. It is located in the "first row" next to the boxed rice/soy milks. Plenty of farangs go there, but the help at the store knows little english. So you may find yourself walking around in circles a few times to hunt down what you need. The quinoa was one of the few products that had no thai symbol equivalent on it. There was a brand name about 380g and a bulk New Organics 500g package, both for 225 bhat. So the bulk package was the better deal. Funny, i got the last one they had that day. So i guess that's about as good as it's going to get. Finally. I will certainly save the packaging to make it easier for someone here to get more next time.

The only thing left now is perhaps to find other sources that stock this. At least the next person searching these threads will have life a lot easier in phuket.

  9. .... If by "a good product" you mean giving people what they want at a reasonable price, then McDonanlds truely does produce "a good product". Its not gourmet food, but it doesn't cost 50 quid per person or take an hour and a half to be served as it does in a fancy restaurant (perhaps that is the only "good" product in your world), and it's cheap and quick for folks on the run (I prefer a Whopper at Burger King, but that's only because I am a gourmet).....

i guess it all depends on what your interpretation of quality is. I would never buy any meat from any fast food chain. i stay away from their fries also. Too many preservatives and unknown chemicals beyond the potato/chicken/beef, assuming it is actual potato/chicken/beef/etc being used. A local or chain restaurant who you can verify uses local meats and fresh vegetables is a much better bet. Instead of waiting 4 minutes at the McD drive through, you may have to wait maybe 7-10 minutes, and the price may be more, but you can be more confident as to what you are putting in your mouth. in Thailand, usually the price of local stuff is cheaper anyway, so when you go McDs or BK, it's purely for taste or to get your western fix. I've always had a knack for BK hash browns. I was happy to see that they serve it 24/7 here at all the thailand. In USA, breakfast was only during breakfast hours.

..... If you walk into any/every Honda dealer that I have ever seen in Thailand it also sells Yamaha -- nobody has been pushed out or forced to switch from one to another! They all sell both. What better opportunity could anyone (as a buyer) want -- you can compare every feature side-by-side and negotiate the price on each bike with the same person, and do that at multiple shops -- the best man (at least in the eyes/minds of the consumer) wins. .......

I did see maybe 2 or 3 yamahas or other non-honda bikes used at some of the honda dealerships i visited, but of course the overwhelming majority of bikes were of the dealer name brand. If it was a mom/pop dealership with no particular brand name, then you saw more of a mix of brands, with honda usually taking up 60% of the lot

But maybe it is all part of a very successful worldwide conspiracy, or maybe (just maybe), riders and buyers like Hondas better!

most likely the latter, lol. But it isn't uncommon for a bigger competitor to buyout or attempt to block out its competition. Often times a big competitor will buy out a competitor with a better idea and then kill it to decrease or eliminate the potential public awareness to a more efficient alternative.

  10. It is worth noting that my friend the Honda dealer states that Honda got into its advantageous position through vigorous restraint-of-trade type practice rather than through any superiority of product. Over the last couple of decades, he says, Honda sold motorbikes at less than cost, and more importantly paid Suzuki, Yamaha, and Kawasaki dealers exorbitantly to switch to Honda or shut down. He says it was a concerted program to destroy the competition by shutting them out of the Thai market.

Sounds more like western capitalism to me. blink.gif

I do know from experience that honda and toyota cars are very popular for their reliability. My toyota corolla got 28-34 mpg and was still quite peppy for a 1.5ltr 4-cyl. The primary reason why i bought it was because of my family and friend's history with foreign cars and my own experience with them when i used to [more than justbiggrin.gif] valet park cars.

I did learn that many of the fancy cars were just names for status only. For the price, they rarely had anything to do with features or practicality.

  11. Think the reason might be because the honda's have fuel injection where the yamaha's still use carburator.Carburator = problems with gasohol

Is fuel injection on a motorbike a difficult technology to incorporate? Not really used to motorcycles, only cars. Unless you buy a car before 1992, you hardly hear the word carburetor.

herd mentality... they all seem to have a hard-on for Hondas or Toyotas.

Anyway, a scooter is a pretty basic machine so a bike from any of the big four Japanese companies will be fine.. but i'm not ready to buy Chinese yet.

I was thinking this at first. I wanted a more "farang" opinion and came here.

Here in Thailand I would not buy any other bike except the Honda

One of my best thai friends said: "You know Jon, if you not want problem with motorbike, I think best for you buy new from company. Or if you buy used, buy from company."

    {

One thing I learned about making ANY electronic purchase or major purchase is to purchase it new at a major company if possible. If you do buy used, either buy it from a company that can give you guarantee, or buy it from someone with original receipt and warranty. It's easy to buy things here, but harder to sell. Most of the locals will sell anything out here to make money and generally could care less about quality, especially when they see you are foreigner. A thai lady i had been renting a scoopy fo 3 months from wanted 35-40k for the bike when i approached her about buying it. And she wasnt sure about the warranty (0-1 years old bike with about 5500 km). A trip down to the local dealership revealed the bike cost 44-46000 NEW with 3 year warranty. I offered her 20000, maybe 25000. but she declined.

Why set yourself up for anything less?

Or you can take your chances on used with no warranty, but at least check everything first. Then if the price is right, just take your chances.

Whenever I bought anything big in the USA, I always kept my receipts and paperwork for warranty. When it was time to sell, I have no problems.

I wanted ZERO problems with this motorbike, and I decided to go with new Honda click i (forgot the exact model number, but it was the top model with the black rims). I saw one 2 years old for 38000 with 1 year guarantee. But why not pay the extra 10000 and just get it new? In order to buy something like that used, it has to be a significant savings (from my point of view). The lady wanted the scoopy, but i had to convince her the click was a much better buy.

I think that part of it is the ability to get it serviced also. I didn't even know there was a yamaha dealer in patong until i went to the carnival outside junceylon and they had a setup out there and told me they were across from the esso. When i passed through phuket town, i counted about 15 honda dealerships (at least 5 had the big honda logo out front) . Overkill? Or is phuket town really that crowded?

  12. Got a few friends living in Chumpon. They all have hot showers, fridges and everything else you mention. It's certainly not a village. I visit there as often as I can - it's a bit of "real Thailand", a far cry from Phuket. As for living there..... Possibly gonna move there in a few years

i just visited Lang Suan in the Chumphon provence. I wasn't too impressed with the prices of everything. People say phuket is expensive, but the price of the fruit and most other food was about the same as going to a thai restaurant or going to the local markets. You need transportation to get everywhere anyway, and the motorbikes were the same price new as in phuket town honda dealership. Maybe the housing is cheaper, i didn't have time to shop around for apartments, but perhaps chumphon town is a bit more up to standards. My CAT CDMA internet worked well on the high speed network, though which was surprising. Lucky for me, as the guesthouses give you a blank stare when you mention internet.

One thing I learned though throughout thailand (well anywhere really): CHECK everything out the first time. Both guesthouses we stayed at said they had hot water, but then (after the fact), it's clearly not working. And they'll refuse to give you a new room or fix it. I tell my thai girlfriend to always check everything out, but she either wants to be shy for the rest of her life or wants headaches for everything. It takes 3 minutes to walk into the room and flip all the light switches, flush the toilet, turn on the shower head, tv and air condition to ensure they are working.

  13. CAT CDMA USB 760 dongle 5,900bht

CAT CDMA (MIFI) rechargable personal hotspot 7,900 bht

CAT home wireless/wired router for use with USB dongle 4,500bht

CAT rechargable hotspot for use with USB dongle 4,900bht

both include 3 months unlimited airtime, not sure what you wanted to buy .......

I got mine from the CAT shop in Central Festival Phuket. 2ndd floor over in the left hand corner. Dongle, works a treat. WP and Passport copy needed. First 3 months free. Will only work in certain provinces. Won't work in Bangkok.

Avoid the after-the-fact wireless router/hotspot as the connection speed is limited. Get either the USB dongles, or the MIFI hotspot modem.

I believe the hotspot or the USB dongle 5900 or above comes with 2 months free. I got the EC150 for 3000bht new and did not qualify for the promotion at the time. They say if you do not have a work permit, they make you prepay. But they typically don't straight cut you off if your bill isn't paid right on time. I usually pay for 2 months at a time anyway. They have a refund policy for unused portion of service for termination.

This was about 5 months ago @ the CAT CDMA office near Junceleyon in patong beach, phuket. They had a ton of product, and a "used" list. They keep a list of people who want to sell their equipment used. I figured for 3000, I was new to thailand and didn't want any hassles, so just bought new. You may get lucky with the MiFi hotspot.

I'm currently traveling through Chumphon provence (Lang Suan) and most of these guesthouses give you a blank stare when you ask for internet. But I'm able to pick up EVDO signal most places. Good idea to set the modem software to "Force EVDO only", otherwise, it likes to switch to the 1x network.

It's not blazing fast, but great option for high speed and portability.

All I needed was copy of passport. no work permit, they demand prepay 1 month.

  14. From what I've been able to observe, the overwhelming consensus on what brand of motorbike to buy seems to be HONDA. I was mentioning to several Thai people that i was considering purchasing a Yamaha and they almost immediately say "NO, This includes about 3 trusted people that I go to steer me the the right direction when I consider making big or important purchases. One friend said "better to buy honda [anything] than yamaha [best].

I was interested to know from here if this is true, at least from a mechanical standpoint. Are Hondas just better quality? Is it harder to fix/maintain a yamaha?

I can say that just about everywhere i go, 90% of the motorbikes for rent or being driven, are hondas.

  15. Have you actually used those no name copy phones ?? Usually awful UI and terrible failure rate.

I would stick to big names.. But then not trying to find phones for 600 baht either.

    Here's my conclusion,

LivingLOS is correct. stick to buying the big names. This includes good thai brands like iMobile. Better to get genuine Android, Blackberry, Symbian, Windows Mobile, etc OS on phone for any type of multitasking. AVOID the copy phones (especially from china), unless you are getting a cheap one with a qwerty keyboard. But for the same money, you can get iMobile. And you wont have to drive all around looking for some local guy's repair shop. You can get guarantee direct from manufacturer or at one of their authorized repair shops.

I found that iMobile is the best deal for the price. http://www.i-mobilephone.com/Catalog.aspx Their Android phones are awesome. but the regular ones in the 2-3k range are pretty good and even have 2-3mp camera. Make sure you buy from a chain store like BigC, Carrefour, PowerBuy,Tesco Lotus or the iMobile shop.

The android ones seem to only be at their iMobile shop in phuket town Tesco Lotus shopping center. They have the 3G 8500 for 7000bht and includes 2g memory. 5mp camara, android, 256mb 3G. They have another one without 3g (6500?) for 4000. That was the deal-breaker (3g). That and the lady lost the box. If only the android ones had 2 sim cards.......

SAVE YOUR RECEIPT. Make a dark photocopy as those other receipts can fade quickly.

If you are going to buy a used phone (good one), better to buy from company where you have some sort of guarantee. And stick to the genuine brand names (iMobile, SKG, etc is ok. )

if you can, take your laptop with internet stick or mobile phone with good browser with you so that you can compare features on the spot. Thai people tend not to know much about multitasking on the phone.

  16. Why did you even bother to post this? Get off your lazy ass and go look around Patong if that's your thing. 'Cake' 'Eat' and 'Want' spring to mind. Jeez.

I somewhat agree with this poster. Yes you need to get your own place in or near the "action zone" if you plan on womanizing on a regular basis. But having good information for where to go get deals can save you a lot of time.

Another tip: rent motorbike and drive around. I suggest renting by the month or even buying one if you ride around soo much. You can rent 3000/mo if you find the right spot. That would save you 8-12000 right there.

  17. I'm sure there's a few of the newer shophouse type guesthouses that would be more than happy to cut a deal with you. Why not ride around and ask?

Elite guesthouse has everything included and is near beach for 9-10,000 bht/mo. Not sure if she went up for high season. In royal paradise complex, Phuket happy tour lady has guesthouse for 12000 everything included, but she may discount for you 10k. Better to walk in there with thai friend or talk yourself with big boss maybe she discount for you. Another guesthouse in royal paradise is 9000/mo. closer to the back everything included. But not sure if he went up for holidays.

There are some apartments for 6k/mo on nanai rd. Come to think about it, there is a thai and farang renting a newer room (was making pizza, but removed all the cooking stuff and turned it into a room) Have everything except for a/c for appx 6k or so a month. The room is HUGE. It's on the bottom floor, so would stay cool anyway. I saw portable room air conditioning for about 10,000 at the big tesco/lotus phuket town.

The timing to be looking for a guesthouse or apt in patong is not great now, as:

    1) many of the locals have relocated for high season

    2) farangs have or are starting to come in for high season

I may be going to chumphon and may give up my apt. 5500 with everything except for internet, and electric/water. CAT cdma high speed 850/mo and electric depends on how much you use a/c. 5/unit and water 12/unit. i use a/c avg 4 hours a day and i leave my laptop on 24/7. and bill is between 12-1500/mo. It may be less next month so far it's been cool in patong. And I stay on the 5th floor.

  18. Been using it for a while no problem. If you are far from the nearest transmitter make sure you can get a connection still with an antenna on your house. Beware they will probably connect it up all wrong with wrong cable and connections! There are a few posts on here that will help you find the correct connections and cables.

If you have an external antenna go on google earth and work out the bearing to set up your antenna to get the best signal.

Thank you for the info. I bought it at CAT in Chumphon, after trying one at our house, luckily we can get the signal and it works very well. Cost 5,500 and 700 a month, well worth it to use skype and have a faster internet connection. There is broadband in Lang Suan, but not on our road.

So there is a CAT CDMA internet shop. I want to confirm this is also for the wireless CDMA usb stick as well as the wired in-house connections. Is the store in chumphon town? So i guess I can confirm that there is cat internet throughout Chumphon? and if the signal is weak, it's just a matter of buying an antenna?

My girlfriend said she wanted to go see her friend in Lang Suan and there were places to stay there. So it's good to know that I could take my usb stick there.

  19. .................

There is no repellant that works with sandflies that I know of and the only thing to do is avoid them and their breeding areas. So take heed of those that have been to Chumphon and suffered the beaches and you might save yourself the pleasure of their company.

    JAF

    what about coconut oil?

I guess it depends on what you want. If it is a quiet life, good beaches, no farangs, etc. Then perfect! If you want to head into the city every once in a while for some shopping, watch a movie, listen to some jazz, eat at a top notch restaurant, or catch up with your friends and play a game of pool at a first class billiards hall...then it is probably not your cup of tea. As they say, "up to you"!

you mean to suggest that there are no shopping or restaurants nearby?

I'm possibly going to migrate from patong beach down to Chumphon or Chang Mai and wanted to know more information about chumphon. My top priority is high speed internet. I already own Cat CDMA. I will check with the local office, but would be interested in knowing other's experience with private internet.

Also, i am looking for the basics (from my point of view)<br clear="all">

    refridgerator

    air condition

    hot water

    electric

    high speed internet

close to shopping center (like lotus, big c, etc) (under 10 km, if possible)

    visa run service

    motorbike rent/buy

any specifics you can provide would be helpful.

  20. I am familiar with the Patong Deli. I will recheck them out. I wish i could bring the thai symbol for quinoa and show them. But i cannot find it. on google translate. Their english isn't great. But a trip out there wont kill me. and it isnt far from where i need to go.

I checked the Patong Deli out. Unfortunately, no quinoa. But sea salt was there. They had many different grains and rices, but no quinoa. Just before that, I rechecked carrefour's rice section. I hope to grab the thai spelling so at least i dont get the blank stares when I mention the word to the thai clerk.

It was interesting that they sell candy bars (kit kat, nestle crunch, milo, etc) cheaper than carrefour in some cases.

I'll check out that place near Kata. I may have to consider ordering online. Any suggestions? Or if I have a friend ship some for me, anything special I should look out for?

I hope bangkok stocks this stuff.
