  1. Someone will correct me if l'm wrong but l think day passes for Thais wanting to cross over to Cambodia are only for those Thais who live in a province that directly adjoins Cambodia. Pretty sure you can't go very far into Cambodia on a day pass anyway, not as far as Angkor Wat. I know my wife used her passport when we went.

  2. Some of the programs listed on that cd are almost certainly spyware themselves. It's always a good idea to Google the name of any anti spyware to see if it is legit. There's a list from a guy called Eric Howes who has tested most anti spyware programs that tells you which programs are suspect. You should find it at spywarewarrior.com, it is an interesting read.

  3. Tywais, l used to have a problem with all sorts of popups from RealPlayer wanting me to make RealPlayer the default player for this file and that file even if l had already assigned WMP as the default. Maybe it doesn't happen any longer but l'm not about to try it again as WMP does the job for me although l agree Real handles more file formats than WMP.

  4. Has the Windows firewall always alerted you to programs wanting to access the internet or is it something that was upgraded recently? Can't remember that happening when l used to use it but it has been a while.

Once you have ZoneAlarm running for a couple of days you can usually set it to look after things automatically without it having to notify you of every intrusion otherwise it would drive you crazy. I've got my computer fairly well secured l think so l get hardly any alerts about programs trying to call home nowadays. There were a lot of complaints about the more recent versions but when l did a reformat recently l installed the latest version without any problems.

  5. It's been a long while that she has been sidelined for. I seem to remember reading somewhere that she was only on a two(?) year contract so if that is correct, does anyone know how long she has left before her current appointment ends? Hopefully she has her appointment renewed because if so many people were trying to get rid of her then she must have been doing a good job.

  6. I had problems with internet radio using WMP10 and Opera myself recently. Not all the time, one day it would be fine, then for a couple of days nothing. I thought it might have been the firewall or proxy settings but nothing seemed to make a difference. I had to do a reformat the other week and went back to using WMP9 and haven't had a problem since so l'm leaving well enough alone for now.

RealPlayer is something l refuse to use as l've had problems in the past with it always trying to take over my computer. WMP and Quicktime cover everything l want to play anyway. :o

  7. While the built in Windows firewall works fine, a softwall firewall like ZoneAlarm allows you to configure things a bit further, one thing being it will warn you if programs are trying to access the internet. Some will say that is a waste of time as by then any damage has probably been done. It can be interesting to see what programs are trying to call home, some you have to wonder why they need to. A lot of people who have problems with ZoneAlarm seem to be those downloading with kazaa type programs which probably require some tweaking that isn't always obvious.

FWIW l use ZoneAlarm with Avast even though you do get a warning when you install it that there are known problems. I haven't had any problems myself since l first installed it nearly a year ago. A couple of times it questioned some incoming e-mails which were legit but you can fix that in the settings.

  8. Yes, but it's still not IN the forum, hence if you send complsints about something IN the forum, they are going to look at the wrong place.

As was stated by another posted above, that he opposed, probably since he didn't have the technical knowledge to realise that no-one said it wasn't The Nations site, not just IN their forum.

When l emailed them l included a url directly linking to the page concerned, and somehow l don't think l was the only one to do that. :o

Again, cdnvic received a reply saying they had removed some posters so they must know about it. Why else would he get such a reply? TAWP, next you'll be telling me they don't have an internet connection at The Nation so they couldn't click on my link to see what l was talking about. :D

Do you think everything is so uneditable that if someone was to post a derogatory remark about the most respected person in Thailand there that they still wouldn't be able to do anything about it?

  9. Jaruwan reinstated as auditor general

Published on Feb 01 , 2006 The Nation

The State Audit Commission (SAC) has reinstated KhunyingJaruvan Maithaka as the auditor-general, saying it followed the advice of His Majesty the King.

After the SAC made the announcement of the reinstatement on Wednesday, Jaruvan thanked His Majesty and vowed to carry out her duty to the best.

SAC chairman Norachai Sripimol said the SAC voted unanimously to reinstate Jaruvan. Despite calls from several groups, the SAC earlier refused to reinstate Jaruvan, citing a ruling by the Constitution Court that her selection process was unconstitutional. But Norachai annnounced on Wednesday that the ruling did not state that Juruvan had to be removed from office and since she had been appointed by a royal command, which had not been void, she should be regarded as still holding her office.

Norachai said the SAC convened a meeting on Tuesday to consider the issue of Jaruvan's status after receiving a letter from Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra on January 26 and another letter from His Majesty's Principal Private Secretary on January 27, asking it to reinstate Jaruvan. Norachai said the SAC would return due salary and other benefits to Jaruvan as soon as possible. He said the Senate would be informed of the SAC's decision in time for the upper chamber to endorse the decision during its special meeting on February 9 and 10.

Kriangsak Wattanawarangkul, an SAC commissioner, said the SAC was not spurred into action by the letter of Thaksin but had been considering the issue since His Majesty the King made a birthday speech on December 4. Somchai Wiroolhapol, another SAC commissioner, said Jaruvan could resume her work on Monday.

With tears in her eyes, Jaruvan said she won her post back because of His Majesty. She said she would start working by restoring the morality of officials of the Auditor-General's Office.

  10. IT'S NOT THE NATION'S FORUM.

Cleaning it up is the job of a person who put the poll on the website, not the actual forum moderators. Like Thaivisa - I don't think every moderator even reads the main site, let alone has powers to remove anything from there.

Give them some slack - they are amateurs, really. Someone has to write them in Thai with detailed explanations of what the problem is and step by step instructions what to do, and also who should be doing it.

A website with the url http://www.nationmultimedia.com/ using The Nation's masthead and you're saying it's not their forum. You cannot be serious.

Did you not see cdnvic post before that he " recieved a reply from The Nation thanking me for pointing out the problem and saying that they have gotten rid of some of the posters.

If it takes someone to write to them in Thai to explain how to sort out their website then l'm amazed they can even publish a newspaper daily.

  11. Porn show starts

    Published on February 01, 2006

The Cyber Cop radio show will kick off operations today aimed at cracking down on websites promoting pornography.

PM’s Office Minister Newin Chidchob announced yesterday he would participate in the first episode today. To be aired on FM105 between 3-5pm on weekdays, the show will serve as a channel for people to inform authorities of obscene websites, as well as offline vendors peddling sex movies.

Information on porn sites and obscene material in other media will be passed to police, who will then take legal action. The campaign will extend to offline promoters and sellers.

    *edit*

with the apologies, the title should read anti-porn

Is this why Virgin FM105 is no longer around, to make room on the airwaves for programs like this?

I can see this being a very popular program as people who can't access blocked porn sites tune in to find the ones that haven't been blocked yet or where to buy the latest XXX dvd's. :o

I can see it now, little Somchai is caught by his mother downloading porn on the net only to be told "mum, l just want to help gather evidence for kuhn Newin. :D

  12. I just recieved a reply from The Nation thanking me for pointing out the problem and saying that they have gotten rid of some of the posters. Anyone else get this?

Just took a look at that link again, there are still comments from a few days ago deserving of deletion that haven't been touched as well as more added today. :D Can't understand why The Nation allows such rubbish on a site they control. I find it impossible to believe that anyone with any authority at The Nation has even looked at their own forum. If anyone is checking that forum it must be some junior staffer with little or no English skills as it is inconceivable that any of the western staff at The Nation could read that stuff and not be aware of just how badly it reflects on them. :D

I sent an e-mail about it myself including my subscriber number but no reply. I've sent them emails a few times in the past, all without acknowledgement but l know they must receive them as a couple of times l've seen my letters make it to print. The only reply to a question l've ever received from any Bangkok newspaper has been from Wanda Sloan of The Bangkok Post Database section, not surprisingly is it the best supplement to be found in any Bangkok paper.

You can find other Asian forums that degenerate into juvenile abuse but the ones l've seen have been mainly gaming forums. All forums can have abuse occur but any decently administered one will respond to complaints quickly, some thing that is not happening here.

As a subscriber I am very, very disappointed in The Nation. :o

  13. steffi, 3990 baht seems to be the standard price most places. I've had mine six months and l can't recall seeing it discounted even one baht. If you can find it cheaper then it's probably only going to be by a couple of hundred baht at best so unless someone can point you right now to a place that has it on sale then l wouldn't spend much time looking. If you don't require the Karaoke option then you can save 500 baht with the cheaper model.

I remember looking to see what this model sold for overseas and it seemed to be nearly double the price in Europe. Maybe that has changed six months down the track, check out some of the US online sales sites.

Funny you mentioned the Philips model. I also saw in my local Tesco a large display of Philips DVD players so l think they might be making way for the next model.

  14. On the actual workstaion I would look to see if EVERY single screw has a rubber washer. The people in the shop should have put these on of course. If they do not then I would recommend taking it back and asking them to do so. I kept getting small static shocks off my computer before they did this for me.

    VaioLord

I hope "EVERY single screw" isn't meant to include the screws that attach the motherboard to the case plate. There are two sorts of motherboard holes, metal and non metal. The metal holes are meant to be screwed with ONLY the metal screw, NO WASHER so as to be grounded with the case.

    Hi Meadish,

The reason for this is that it will provide you with not only a small battery to run the computer when powers down but also it will ensure a clean flow of electic to the computer. The UPS can also usually be fushed and connect direct to an earth. You can see more on UPS' at www.apcc.com the best company but expensive here in Thailand.

    VaioLord

AFAIK the cheaper models of UPS do little to "clean' up the power supply, that's a feature only the more expensive models have.

  15. Opera identifying as IE is the default setting l believe.

Opera means a new learning curve but with a bit of work it can be as nearly good as Firefox. Not as configurable as Firefox with all its extensions but there is a lot you can do with it if you know where to look. One plus is when you upgrade to the latest version it's so much easier to do so than the Fox.

  16. There is a lot of software on the net which purports to speed up surfing but most of it is a waste of time. I only ever found one program that made any difference and that was CableNut (do a Google search).

On dial-up you must use a tabbed browser like Firefox, Opera or Maxthon. That way while you are reading one page you can have others loading in the background in separate tabs ready to read when you finish the first page.

Try using a proxy from your ISP, that can make a difference. Download a program called Ad-Muncher which can help for those sites that are slow to download because there are adverts being downloaded before the rest of the page loads. That can make a big difference on news sites in my experience.

You say you've just had a line put in so l'll assume you don't need to check the condition of the wiring but the shorter the distance between where the line enters the house and your computer the better.

  17. Any current graphics card will let you view DVDs full screen on your computer, or do you mean view it on your tv? This computer l'm using now has an old Duron 900 with a 4(?) year old 64MB card which l saw second hand the other day for only 300 baht but l can watch DVDs full screen (1024x768) using Nero and Windows Media Player. If you need a new card because the onboard Via chip is not up to the task then any current budget one will be okay for your system. Just be careful not to spend too much on an upgrade as you're already using an obsolete ECS 478 motherboard.

Your motherboard is similar to my Jetaway in that it has only two DDR RAM slots, so keep the fastest stick of RAM because whatever speed the new RAM you buy, it will only be be fast as the RAM you already have. Check the motherboard manual to see what is the fastest RAM it can handle before you buy some more. More and more motherboards are using only DDR2 so the next time you want an upgrade and you want the latest board your current RAM will probably be useless.

  18. A simple upgrade would be to increase the RAM by 512MB if you have the space to do so (what OS are you using btw?), that will cost about 2000 depending on what type of RAM you have in there at the moment. A new 160GB 7200 RPM HD will cost about 3400 baht. Add in a couple of quiet case fans for 700 baht and some rounded cables to assist airflow for another 500 baht. If you need to upgrade further, like a new CPU, then you are better off with a whole new system.

If it's running slow have you cleaned up spyware, ran an anti-virus check, defragged and cleaned out temp files recently?

If you really want a new computer then what is your budget? Tell us that otherwise it's pointless everyone giving you suggestions that could be way more than you want to spend. Take a look at the thread a week back where George asked a similar question and see some of the answers given there.

As a general guide 30-40,000 will get you a rather nice Intel based Pentium 4 system. AMD is cheaper, runs cooler and is better for many tasks but if you're more concerned with media tasks than gaming, stick to Intel.

  19. If that's the new PantipPrice site then they've gone backwards in a big way. Looking at what they have in stock in some categories you might as well go to Tesco, the range is so small. Hopefully it's still a site under construction as indicated by the lack of details and pictures for what few products they do have.

Busitek has some interesting stuff, not a wide range but they stock some items not so easy to find even at Pantip or Zeer.

  20. Seagate says to buy Maxtor for $1.9 bln in stock

    Wed Dec 21, 2005

NEW YORK, Dec 21 (Reuters) - Seagate Technology on Wednesday said it would buy rival computer disk-drive maker Maxtor Corp. for $1.9 billion in stock.

Under terms of the deal, which is expected to be completed in the second half of 2006, Maxtor shareholders will receive 0.37 shares of Seagate common stock for each Maxtor share they own. Seagate shareholders will own about 84 percent and Maxtor shareholders will own about 16 percent of the new combined company.

The combination is expected to add 10 to 20 percent to Seagate's cash earnings per share after the first full year of joint operations, Seagate said in a release.

Seagate said its executive management team will continue to serve in their current roles and the combined company will retain the Seagate nam

  21. And here l was thinking that l must have stuffed something up when l changed computers. Last couple of nights have been very patchy, almost impossible to get internet radio and l'm one person who usually doesn't have many problems with True. If l try to use the True/Asianet proxy l cannot connect at all to most websites tonight, but if l just use the standard connection then it's bearable.

  22. LA Times coverprice weekdays is 50 cents (20 baht).

Circulation of the Times is about one million weekdays, the circulation of The Nation or The Bangkok Post would be only 50-60,000 daily.

If you want to save some money then you can get a yearly sub delivered daily to your door for less than 10 baht a day using the bonus offer in The Nation at the moment. Twelve months + two months free for 3,950 baht.

  23. Works with True from Bangkok.

Chelsea will again face Barcelona in the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League, while Arsenal will play Real Madrid and holders Liverpool face Benfica.

Took about 15 seconds to load for me compared to 4 seconds for Thai Visa.

Could be anything but things you could try would be to unplug your modem for a few seconds, use a proxy if you're not using one already, clear the cache of your browser and run from the command line ipconfig/flushdns.

One other thing that sometimes works is to alter your DNS setting. Try inserting the following and see if there is any difference:

    203.144.207.29 (True)

    203.149.0.40 (Samart)

The fact you're getting half the page to load probably means it's not DNS related but why not try it. Are you having trouble with any other sites? If not could there be some advertising in the website that is causing problems. I used to find ThaiVisa could take 3 minutes to load one page and advertising was the reason why as far as l could tell.
