  1. Dual Thai and U.S. citizenship is not illegal in either Thailand or the U.S. I seems many countries try to imply they don't prefer it, but few make it illegal. My wife has dual Thai and U.S. citizenship and she is definitely over 20. When she flies to the U.S. she uses her Thai passport to exit Thailand, U.S. passport to enter and exit the U.S., and then her Thai passport to reenter Thailand. Now, when I say "uses" XYZ passport I mean she only shows the Thai passport or U.S. passport to the Thai and U.S. Immigration officials, respectively. When checking in with the airlines you can show both passports because the airlines need to ensure you have the necessary visa and/or passport to enter the country you are flying to...like when a Thai citizen flies from Thailand to the U.S.---the airlines could care less about dual citizenship....the airlines just need to ensure they don't get stuck with having to return the customer free to the originating country because the customer didn't have the proper visa/passport to enter another country.

This is exactly what my wife does. They may ask to see her other passport, but just glance at it. It is not a problem, not really an inconvience

  2. Everyone is selling and moving to Chiang Mai. The boom here is incredable. Most of my Thai friends have bought houses and getting ready to move their businesses here. My wifes upscale coffee house and noodle restaurant is doing great, she has to open a second location.

Give us the cash, Love it

    Randy

Land value where our home is situated east of Chiang Mai has really risen over the past 5 years. The 5-6 rai piece of property next door was sold to an Thai lady married to an Aussie went for $1.5 million baht. I guess it'll be good to have a neighbor, I like the peace and quiet as is, but they might be good eggs and I'll not make any assumptions, and till they get a home built and move in, and we get to know each other. I suspect since they bought in the boonies they might be quiet folk like us.

Some folks a couple of klicks away drilled the an area attempting to hit hot water and succeeded. Turned around and sold their land for $1 million per rai. I guess a Spa will be built, but it's a few klicks away

  3. If i am correct, in November 2009, it was the exact same situation (Eur/Thb at 37.5).

I can't recall, was it a big issue then?

Euro is comparatively the one that performed best, USD has been going down and GBP completely tanked.

Since Mar 2009 the Euro had been better than the dollar. But since 2011 the Euro has fared appreciably no better than the dollar

    Mar 2009 Euro 47.03 Dollar 35.82

    Mar 2010 Euro 43.75 Dollar 31.15

    Mar 2011 Euro 42.33 Dollar 30.17

    Mar 2012 Euro 40.12 Dollar 30.58

    Apr 2013 Euro 37.65 Dollar 28.50

  4. They have a statue like that in Cape Town South Africa in the up market Harbour area

They have one in Stockholm / Sweden too

    Wow!

    And then?

    Does it help?

Whatever you think, weapons, be it firearms, knives or whatever, do not kill.

    People do.

So do something about the way people think.

That might be a huge job in Thailand, or in many other countries in the world.

Whatever, South Africa, and Sweden are not exactly good examples of the "broken-rifle" cult, are they?

Just as a point of Information they are copies of the one that sits in front of the one organization that seeks to disarm all citizens, The United Nations. One day we will all be sheeple.

  5. There are a few places in Chiang Mai that book an excursion to Luang Prabang. (maybe 1800 baht) 1st day drive to Chang Klong (I think) You see a few things Crystal (or White) temple, hot spring, eat lunch at a cashew place. Be sure to buy some cashews to munch for the next couple of days. The hotel you stay in is crappy so leave the tour once getting to the hotel. Wander west a bit come to a much better place that used to be private home of an ex Prime Minister lovely place maybe 600 baht per night. Get up real early go to the crap hotel (or you can stay in crap hotel included in tour price)and rejoin the tour. Now they'll want to have handled your exit visa from Thailand for a chunk of change you could have done but you can do it yourself right next to the boats they'll take you to. You'll be in no real hurry after you get to the boats. Take boat across river get a Laos visa right after you get off the boat a little ways up and to the right. Then some dude with the tour or so you think will try to have you change money, don't bother dollars or baht good in Laos You'll wait a bit and get on the Slow boat.

This is the journey all the rest has been crap. You'll go down river for two days, spend the night in Pac Ban(you gotta find and pay for)your own guesthouse, not hard) and the next in Luang Prabang. The Mekong is beautiful serene and if you like to party the back packers will show you the way. You don't want to be on the Sun side of the boat. It's an enjoyable trip but the views are river views lot of banks, rocks and mountains. Very few villages. The boat will stop for people on the banks from time to time. Luang Prabang is nice in the old Capital area. If you wanna see the sights there do a tour to the water fall and Hmong village (just want to sell you stuff) takes a few hours bargain on price and time. Airport is very close and the flight back was $150 usd

They had started to build a bridge two years ago that probably changes up the boat trip to Laos Immigration so that portion may be inaccurate now

  6. Our home is located outside of Chiang Mai and I wouldn't think China would bother Thailand and they certainly wouldn't allow anyone or anything to trespass their airspace. Can't say I'm worried about Thailand's immediate neighbors as Vietnam's the most competent and capable force in SE Asia and they ain't mad at Thailand. I'd just sit on our front porch and watch the sun go down most nights and hope all heals quickly.

The War I'd worry about is what's occurring in the South, intensifying and moving North and moving East from Burma. It's hard to tell the players without a scorecard

  7. The jokes just keep rolling! I'm pretty sure they're famous for beautiful scenery, extortion, and lagging behind in social, technological, and humanitarian development.

Wasn't there an article about a week ago saying divers are starting to go to Myanmar more now evaluate the natural beauty is preserved. Now the numbers are growing?!?!?'

In defense of Thailand I would like to point out to you that Myanmar is doing nothing to preserver the beauty. The big difference is they didn't allow the skin divers in. Now they are starting to cater to them. Give them time and they will have the reefs in the same condition as Thailand.

The coral would live a lot longer if the divers and snorklers would not be wearing "sunscreen" Minute amounts causes the coral to into distress. Dive clean

  8. A friend had shown me photos taken a few years ago and I was looking forward to seeing the saltwater tank. But, I was disappointed when I last looked at it. It must cost a lot to maintain cleanliness and water condition. Some large fish do not do well in fish tanks. Every species has it's own unique environment conditions and it's hard to mix species in the same environment.

I'm back in Atlanta for a bit and we've got a little aquarium downtown that mixes up species pretty good. Whale sharks are the biggest of the lot, some Belugas, great whites, groupers, mantas, hammerheads and various other sharks, 120,000 fish, 500 species. The biggest problem is the Belugas, they lost several to some kind of disease but recently no problems. 290 million in contributions allowed them to open debt free and the highest ticket price to enter an aquarium keeps them that way. bing Georgia Aquarium for images

  9. Making curry is so easy, simply say, honey I'd like some curry this evening. Then two things could occur. 1, the lovely wife will agree and you'll have great curry for that evenings meal. 2, lovely wife will say I'm tired lets go to the restaurant that sells good curry. Either one is acceptable and tasty.

  10. They have the Kunming flight from Chiang Mai direct both ways now? I went years back and you flew via Bangkok to there and direct back to Chiang Mai. Kunming's a nice little city. Surrounding Kunming are peoples like the Hill tribes of Thailand (ok SE Asia), all with their own style of clothing and customs. They've a little zoo that had the hookiest mermaid show you'd ever wanna see, but they do have white tigers. I remember getting a good pizza there near the Thai Consulate. South by train you've the Stone Forest. We ate at a restaurant where the tea kettles spout must have been 8 foot long and the tea man poured amazingly well as I never got a drop spilled in three meals there. Buses are cheap and you can take a taxi if you get lost. Just take a card from your hotel so you have their address on it. When going somewhere get it written at the hotel in Chinese and ask what buses to take to and from, its not a large place. Kunming's a great place for a first visit to China, no big real crowds or confusion. We went on a pre Honeymoon and it was my wifes first trip outta Thailand and she loved it. Ladies there are all sorts of dress shops all over the city, husbands be advised, but not expensive.

I can't imagine not liking Macao, it ain't big but interesting. I found a great Portuguese (it was a Portuguese colony) buffet there, even served those tasty yeast rolls you get in every restaurant in Portugal. I wasn't married at that time ( its been 18 years or more), so I allowed a Filipina waitress to take me home for a few days. On a little hill the have the front wall of a church, that's it just the front wall, they like it and had a photo of it on their stamps. (there is a history behind it)

I'd recommend taking the hovercraft over from Hong Kong, only about 45 minutes.

  11. Dont forget about good ol' Cajohn (cajun)...ah, missing Pappadeux...

I'm in Atlanta right now and we were at Pappadeux's last week. Crawfish Etouffee was quite tasty. We'll be back to Chiang Mai when the VA quits finding things to do to me.

  12. Same everywhere. In the States, "minorities" (who will be the majority in less than 20 years) with bad grades and a brain stem are given priority over the, uhm, paler folks with excellent grades.

But such stupid practices won't deter the truly smart kids from succeeding. Your girl has many options.

On the other hand, you had quite some idiot for president for a number of years. However, Yale, Harvard, and he was the only American president ever with an M.B.A.

We have Harvard Lawyer in office now. Simpleton can't even balance his personal checkbook, much less come up with a working budget for the country. Harvard graduates some butt clowns and foists them off on the American public.

  13. As a lad I had a friend I'd visit with who lived out in the country (at that time it was country) outside of Tampa. Their morning farm breakfast was just amazing. pork chops, fried chicken, pancakes, scrambled eggs, fresh hot biscuits, sausage, bacon, fruit juice etc. Now that was a breakfast. The meat they butchered and processed themselves, their chickens provided the eggs, citrus trees provided fruit. They never considered themselves wealthy, but they had several hundred acres and grew just about everything you'd want.
