  1. It isn't going to be cheap sending stuff to Australia. I would advise paying extra to get a professional removal company to move you.

If you want problems then choose one of the cheaper companies.

I used to work for Pickfords in Bangkok, I can vouch they will give you a great service at both ends. But they wont be the cheapest company you find.

When it arrives in Oz, be prepared to spend a day with Customs, Quarantine, while they go through every item. Ensure everything is spotlessly clean. I got hit for $80 as I was told a pedal bin was not clean. A very detailed list of what's in the boxes is required.

  2. First of all, and I'm going to sound pernickety here, it's your girlfriends application, she is the one that has to satisfy the Entry Clearance Officer, the decision maker, that the proposed visit is genuine, affordable and that, on the balance of probabilities she will return home at the conclusion of the visit. You don't actually "obtain a visa for your girlfriend" though of course you will be part of the process.

It's not important who you address the sponsors letter, "to whom it may concern" is as good as anything. If you are sponsoring her write a short letter saying you've been living in a subsisting relationship for how many years it is, give brief details of your joint ties here, working at the same place will help, brief details of your finances, the trip including the length, including where you'll be staying, and any plans for the future, as I say make it brief.

If you're staying at your family home then submit a letter of invitation confirming that you can stay there and what accommodation is available. A copied water bill doesn't really prove anything, to be quite frank my partner has never supplied any more than a letter as I've described and she's always been successful, though I know some people like to provide a lot more.

As you say a letter from her employers giving the details of her work, how long she's been there and that she's expected to return. UKVI staff sometimes call employers to confirm the details, so if the original letter is in English they will expect to converse with the author in English. You say you work there as well, confirmation of that would help.

Original bank statements are required for both of you together with evidence of the source of the income. If you live together give evidence of your accommodation here in Thailand. Supply a copy of your passport, bio page and the pages that evidence your stay in Thailand.

From what you've described, you have joint ties here, you work and live together, you're both going to the UK for a short holiday, it is short isn't it? I don't envisage a problem.

If you've been living in a relationship akin to marriage for more than two years then she could apply for a standard visit visa as your partner, to be quite honest there is no benefit in applying as anything more than as a tourist.

As you rightly say, current UKVI guidance is not to include photographs, I suspect they've been overwhelmed over the years. I used to include a photo of my partner and I every time we travelled overseas, the same information is in our passports, so we now don't. Likewise a note from your employers would prove you work together, though many couples who don't work together still get visas.

Showing returnair tickets for both might also help.

  3. A degree is not a specific requirement for obtaining a work permit.

What "profession", skill or trade are you going to offer an employer ?

A job with a Thai employer/Company is needed before a work permit and appropriate visa can be obtained

I have completed my TEFL course so I'm looking to teach. However, the majority of teachers I've met who are teaching here are all working on Educational Visa's because they don't have degrees. I don't fancy doing it the illegal way so I'm just trying to find a way to stay here legally.

I have enough money to start a small business so that's another option.

What do you think is the better option?

    Visa's???

  4. stuffs too sweet for me but i keep some moconna gold on hand for emergencies

Also way too sweet for me. I use 2 in 1 if I can find it. The convenience of having these small packs is good esp if you're on move and away from home, and trying to save on weight. I have not seen 2 in 1 anywhere in Chiang Mai

So I wait until I'm in KL or Australia, and buy 2 - in - 1, which is just coffee and creamer and not 50% sugar. Thais seem to have an extraordinary sweet tooth.

  5. it's soap powder.

and you're taking it way too personally.

The item itself is not the subject of the topic, as it happens with hundreds of other items as well, and I think when I get scammed I have the right to take it personally.

The writer seems to think that there are consumer protection laws here regarding pricing and labelling.

In many countries, pricing laws also demand that the cost per 100g is shown. It is soon obvious if there is a cost increase.

  6. yes, head lice is common in schools. I thought I had this problem last year, and went to the Pharmacy and asked for some Permethrin anti lice shampoo.

I got blank looks and someone looked up the Pharmacy handbook, and told me it wasn't available.

Turns out the standard treatment in Thailand is a LINDANE based shampoo!!! It's nasty stuff.

Permethrin is used in most western countries, as it's safe. Lindane certainly isn't.

Permethrin is available in tick and lice shampoo for dogs!

That's a lot safer than Lindane. look it up! it's not good.

  8. CHEESE! Yes. I never thought of that either even though I crave it all the time.

How much red wine can I get away with bringing back with me?

Yup, I buy about 5 different kinds of cheese, about 400g each, and get them vacuum sealed. they last for many weeks in the fridge.

Underwear was on my last shopping list, plus a good selection of prepared Asian spices which are not available here. Also a good pair of training shoes, which cost AU$30 (750baht) as the price here is double or treble that for the same brand.

As Christmas was so close to my last return, I chose a few sweet goodies from ALDIs, and a nice stollen.

Lastly, a 1 litre bottle of duty free Drambui at the airport. No use getting wine as it only lasts a few days.

  9. When I moved into my condo a few months back, the weather was warmer, and due to poor fitting screens and a 2cm gap under the door, midges would get in.

I'm allergic to these, and the itch takes days to go away.

However, a door seal, some encouragement to make the screens fit, a seal under the door and maybe cooler weather, and the problem has gone.

I also used a pyrethrum-based spray (maybe the same as "Mosi-Guard") and no more problems.

  10. In Chiang Mai there are normally vans slowly cruising the main roads, holding up the traffic, and broadcasting what seems to be advertisements for Thai Boxing.

Of course, these are necessary to keep the community informed, as they seem to be working on the basis of the average Thai family having neither radio or TV.

I haven't heard any for the past 2 days; maybe they've been told to get lost and avoid upsetting the hordes who are here to enjoy this week's festivities.

  11. Yes, they kill mossies. They are also commonly made from synthetic pyrethroids that accumulate in the environment and your body.

Can you give reliable references to this statement.?

Pyrethroids are listed as approved insecticides as they are safe for animals and people. They are found in sprays, mosquito coils, the small pads put in a heater, as a dip for nets.

  12. "She said veterinarian used to conduct surgical sterilisation on the leader male monkey by cutting its sex organ to curb overpopulation of monkeys.

But it turned out that the behaviour of the male monkey turned to act like female and the new leader will come to take the leader role of the herd."

So them made katoey's out of them. cheesy.gif

It seems that a vasectomy is the answer, and not the 'cutting of an organ'.

That way the ringleader is still sexually active, but he's only firing blanks.

It's a wonder that the Thai RSPCA hasn't raised a complaint. (there is an RSPCA isn't there??)

  13. You're supposed to report to the local police within 24 hours of arriving but it's a law thats rarely enforced, and up until recent events the police didn't seem bothered about it. They are supposed to keep an up to date register of all foreigners in there area I think they've had their backsides kicked and these visits are simply reactive ass covering. My wife had a phone call last week to check if I was still here.

Do you meant to say that after all the photos, form filling and fees, that Thai Immigration don't advise Thai Police of our details, addresses?

That's truly amazing, considering that this 'update' must be done every 90 days.

  14. Airport Taxi Busted for ‘Turbo’ Meter

    By Khaosod English

Taxi driver Sawai Meepian is accused of jacking up fares with a hidden button near his turn signal.

BANGKOK — Police and soldiers at Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport arrested a taxi driver yesterday for installing a rigged fare meter and having illegal drugs in his car.

Police say the driver, Sawai Meepian, installed a device known as “turbo meter” in his car, which can be pressed by hand to swiftly raise the fare. The switch was wrapped in a black cloth and hidden close to the turn signal, police said.

They also claimed to find 24 kratom leaves in the vehicle’s glove box. Kratom is an addictive plant used as a folk remedy and is illegal in Thailand.

Pressing the button by hand is much more convenient than doing it with your foot. tongue.png
