  1. the test is purely to see if you have a colour vision defect - i.e. can't tell the difference between red and green.

My test last week was a colour pattern hanging off the wall, and the examiner got me to repeat a few times what colour she was pointing at.

end of tests and photo taken and had the licence in 5 minutes or so.

  2. now that I've moved near Maejo Univeristy, I find that most of my groceries are available at Rimping Mee Chok, and the large Home Mall in the outer ring road has a good range of gear, Only problem is that it gets hot in there, with no air con. Parking at Home Mall is good, but how come 'shade cloth' doesn't seem to have hit if off here?

If car parks in northern Australia don't have it, people go elsewhere. Saves the car becoming a microwave on wheels.

What we do need is a cinema or two.

  3. I've just obtained my Thai licence, and no problems at all. Sure, I needed a residency form, doctor's certificate and international and Australian licence.

The only hiccup was that they thought the date on the cover was the expiry date and not the date of issue.

Once I told them that, they wrote 'issued' where it should have been and after a quick colour vision test, I got the licence.

Seems they have problems with het Nederlandse! smile.png

  4. Sidewalks/footpaths? where? I've only seen motor bike parking areas.

As the tendency is to park exactly in front of where you want to go or work, bikes are parked on the nearest open space - you guessed it.

The 2.5 metres between a boundary fence and the curb is used for power and phone poles, motor vehicle warning signs, advertising stands, motorbikes, and quite often, food stalls.

Often, the street seems to offer the only open space.

    T.I.T.!

  5. I was searching at Rimping recently for "2 in 1 coffee". no such luck. I've got to keep off the sugar!

Anyone know who might have this or is back to KL to buy it whenever....

I know I can always use Nescafe, but the White coffee is rather nice, but not 50% sugar or whatever it is that Thais love to have..

  6. I've only been here 8 months, the past two months north of Chiang Mai in a delightful area.

    I rent a 3 bedroom, 3 bathroom, 2 loo house for $250 a month. That's much less than a week's rent back in Oz.

People are nice, most Thais have no idea on dog training, but it's peaceful here.. Sure a beach or even a decent pool would be great; the beaches are not so far for a holiday.

Driving habits leave much to be desired, if only they'd keep on the LEFT!

I took my wife and kids to Indonesia for 2 years, it was sure different, but a great learning experience for all. Not much different to here as far as challenges go.

Schooling is something you'll get good advice on from others.

  7. I acquiring handguns easy in Thailand? sad.png

Calls for a total ban on all firearms.

I read recently that Thailand has more guns than the Philippines.

    that's really saying something!!

no that could NOT be correct ...if it is then thailand is really AMAZING

    from Wikipaedia:

The phrase "gun crime" is consistently used by both gun-control and gun-rights policy advocates, with differing emphases: the former group advocates reducing gun violence by enacting and enforcing regulations on guns, gun owners, and the gun industry, while the latter group advocates education on how to be a responsible gun owner.[6][7]

Levels of gun violence vary greatly across the world, with very high rates in Brazil, Venezuela, Mexico, South Africa, Colombia, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Jamaica, as well as high levels in Russia, The Philippines, Thailand, and some other underdeveloped countries, Levels of gun violence are low in Singapore, Japan, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and many other countries.[8] The United States has the highest rate of gun related injuries (not deaths per capita) among developed countries, though they also have the highest rate of gun ownership and highest rate of officers.[9]

  8. The Chinese Consulate is easy to find, (Google Earth) and a few forms and a few thousand baht and you come back in 3 days and you've got yr visa.

Don't forget, that if you plan to go to Hong Kong, you need two visas!

  9. The Japanese seem to have some experience in this, and they advocate getting under a desk or table.

I've seen the other version in Jakarta, where there is no training, and what you get are a number of classrooms of screaming pupils all trying to rush downstairs and outside. Instant pandemonium, a strong possibility of being trampled to death, only to discover it's a minor quake anyway. rolleyes.gif

  10. It also has a lot to do with driver education and the needs for some cold, hard facts. A little bit of driver re-education for offenders, such as visiting the brain damaged wards.

I was once assured by a university student that there was no need for helmets after 9pm; the reason given was that Traffic Police were off duty by then!! I naturally pointed out that Casualty and Emergency wards of the hospitals were still open.

He was quite puzzled by this remark, and could not see the connection.

Obviously wearing helmets is not so much a safety thing as avoiding getting fined.

Vietnam has one solution: those caught not wearing helmets have their bikes taken off them for a minimum of 48hrs. They then must present themselves to the police station with both the fine and a helmet.

Further into the subject of personal safety, I have been looking for an economical new car. To my horror, I have been told that the Chevrolet, eg, has no air bags until the more expensive models!

  11. To be honest, the heat depresses me. I'm an outdoors person, like to "work" our land, hike, bicycle, but usually find myself indoors after 10am. We don't have AC, don't need it. Large well designed house, high ceilings, rural setting. Close the windows after it starts to warm up, & stays cool inside. Just get pi$$ed off can't do more with my time during the day sad.png

Do you have insulation in the roof, and possibly roof ventilation?

I've thought of doing this while the weather is still mild as it might be cheaper. Makes a huge difference for houses in the tropics.

I'm out of the city now, and the cool country air at night is a delight and no need for air con for a few months yet.

Afraid that climate change is with us, whether anyone is a flat earther, climate change denier or not, it's happening.

  12. R.I.P Mr Hart......Among the debris found scattered on the road was a single sharp knife. Police have yet to determine who owned the knife and how it arrived at the scene. ...........here we go again ???

I also carry a knife when going out at night.

It's far from sharp, as it's a fruit knife, but how else are we meant to eat at a restaurant? eat with our fingers or tear the food apart with the supplied fork and spoon!

  13. any chance of seeing this test?

Hang on. I just found one on internet. This is the kind of stuff that assumes that there is only one answer. The odd letter out may be the only one that doesn't have straight lines as printed or is not a part of the Armenian alphabet. I can well imagine that Thais would have problems with this kind of test. If they fail the test because they didn't study the mentality of the kind of people that invents this c**p, then that's fair enough. Depending on how p**sed off I feel, I get an IQ result from 140 to 90, I don't think that an intelligent person would even take this stuff seriously.

what is the site? I'd like to see it too.

I just wonder what the folk here are reading all the time, with their noses stuck in their ipads or phones as they cross the streets. must be mighty interesting stuff. Even use them when they're hurtling down the highway, no helmet, busy texting. w00t.gif
