Coming from Norway, Thailand is cheap. Cheap food, gasoline, housing, utilities, labour, visas. If you want to see expensive, take a holiday in Norway, even the Japanese (With their large purchasing power) complain.
Concur 100%. A very nice country but extremely expensive. Alcohol is crazy expensive and can only be bought from government run stores. I did like the large selection of smoked and pickled fish on the breakfast buffet though.

Last time I was in Thailand I had a pair of pants made at a rural village tailor. I bought the fabric in Nang Rong for about $12 USD per pant (really nice light wool material), the total cost per item was about 25 USD. I challenge anyone to buy a pair of tailor made pants in the USA of Europe (of any quality) for $25. Good luck, and let us know where when you find them.

500,000 Baht equates to about $14,2586 USD (I used 35:1) for five years. This works out to $2857 USD per year, or $238 per month. For someone that is under 50 years old or not married to a Thai this might not be a bad way to go (I you can afford it).

My wife became a US citizen, and she retained her Thai passport and citizenship.

Everybody that has predicted the end of the world/end of humanity throughout history has been incorrect. Maybe someday someone will nail the prediction but until then do what you can to improve and protect the environment so that it will be there for our childrens children.

Autocratic rule worked well for Lee in Singapore, making it into a prosperous modern country. Not a democracy, but the good outwieghs the bad if the leader put the interests of the country first.
Democracy doesn't mean you will not end up a serf. High taxes at some point makes everyone nothing more than a serf working most of the year for his master. The only difference is the benifits are a bit better than 800 years ago, but a serf is a serf even ifit comes with meager retirement pensions.

For 200,000 baht a month you can live in Hawaii. That is $6,250 USD a month! Surely you can live in Thailand on this amount of money and have a dollar or two every month left over each month to save for a rainy day.
I think you might be able to get by.

Is it April 1 already?
If the greenies want to reduce CO2, they sequester themselves underground.
CO2 is food for plants, not a dangerous gas. Water vapor is a much more effective green house gas.
Not difficult to see who the fool is
So few words yet so much stupidity.
Where climate change is concerned, water vapour is a double edged sword, although I think trying to explain the albedo effect of water vapour to the author of this little gem would be akin to playiing a violin to a buffalo.

That is totally useless information. The world is emitting tons of greenhouse gasses (natural and manmade) and someone cares about which Thai food dish has the largest carbon footprint? The entire world would need to stop using fossil fuels today (no cars, no planes, no shipping, no heating) in order to make a dent on the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Even with the entire world living an Amish lifestyle there would not be noticable changes to the climate for decades. None of this is going to happen so eat up, it doesn't make one bit of difference in anyway and is one ofthe dumbest bits of information I have seen in some time.

Wake up Mr president, the US is a racially biased country, always been, always will be, when you have
multitude of races joking for the same sunny spots in life that's what happened, you will find racism
in every country around the world, even in the most advanced and educated population countries like
Europe,
The black in your country hate the non black as much as the other way around, and nothing you can
do will change that, all that it can be done is to keep this gun powder keg from exploding...
I agree and would add that the USA is not as racist as many other western countries. I would offer England and Australia as examples of countries with racism equal to or worse than the USA. What I do don't agree with is that a majority of people (or even a large majority) in these countries are racist.

As my lawyer friends say "it depends". I would say earlier than about 10 A.M. is too early even if you are on vacation somewhere exotic. If you are not on vacation after noon is probably OK.

I should have also said good luck on your move. I will be retiring to Thailand a few years behind you, I have been there a dozen or more times and my wife of 20+ years was a native of Thailand (now also a US citizen). I think you will find it much safer than Mexico. Watch out for the women as there are many gold diggers, but also many nice ones. It may sound crazy but even at 63 years of age you are an eligible bachelor. Wish you the best on your new adventure.

As others have said bring good shoes, underwear, and cool clothing. Instead of buying clothes off the shelf you might try to find a good tailor. There is one in my wife's village in Buriram that I use and I have no complaints. A decent pair of tailor made pants for around $25 USD. Just another option to keep in mind, although I am sure it would be significantly more expensive in a large city (i.e. Bangkok).

I started reading some of the replies to this post. Whatever country you come from do you people really think that providing "an enhanced lifestyle" does not have a role with the women in whatever country you came from? White, black, brown or purple in color. Why would it be any different in Thailand, or any other country in the world? It is just that in Thailand providing an "enhanced lifestyle" if just a bit more affordable to the average retiree.
I wish the OP all the luck in the world.

I think you should not care what anyone else thinks. Does she make you happy? Do you think you are getting ripped off? Enjoy the ride, if it turns south you can get out. Just don't do anything you would not do in your country of origin (i.e. buy a house, car, or any other big ticket similar item). Sounds like you like her and that is what is important.

My wife would sleep with our son when he was small, and I was at sea for months at a time. It was a chore to get him to go to sleep in another room when I came home, but he did eventually get used to it. This practice is very common in Thailand, and not recommended in the west. I say when in Rome.... do as the Romans do. Enjoy your children while they are young, soon enough they will be older and not a cuddly as when they are small.
That being said if they are 19 years old and still sleeping mom and dad you may have taken it too far at some point.

It's Genocide. Israelis plan is to take Gaza. It's clear now. Though of course they will deny it.
This is the first time in human history that a population allegedly subject to genocide has a population that is increasing rather dramatically.
The Palestinian population has quintupled since Israel came into existence and has doubled since 1990, but Israel is being accused of genocide.
Yes, the population of Palestinians is increasing. And the tactic of demographic flooding (similar to what the Han Chinese have done in parts of China) will ensure that Israel faces increasing troubles far into the future. As Peter Grigorenko, a little known but influential political theorist once said: "It is the duty of every revolutionary to have 12 children". Demographics trumps history.
The deliberate failure by Israel to make peace when things were far easier back in the 1990s has created a more difficult situation to now resolve. Imagine if Rabin and Arafat had been encouraged to keep moving forward towards peace. Today Israel would be a far richer and happier state. Sure, they wouldn't own as much land, and a few extreme Zionists would be gnashing their teeth, but the vast majority of Israelis would raise their children without any sense of threat.
And it may be that the failure to build toward peace today by Israel will lead to even more difficulties in any future attempts. I suspect so, because of the generational hatred engendered by this latest assault on Gaza. Israel will "win" the war, but is by far the biggest loser if peace is an aim. (Well, it isn't an aim for Netanyahu, Lieberamn and many Israelis - stealing more land is the aim. But for others, peace is their dream).
As long as Israel exists in some form the Palestinians will not allow peace.

If you think you are too old, or you do not want to deal with children at this point in your life then the answer is no children. I think you should be upfront about this with your partner and make sure you are both on the same page.

As said to you earlier; why don't the Israeli government take the moral high ground and say that while the rocket attacks my continue, they will hold to a ceasefire and stop the bombing?
What country on earth would call a ceasefire and allow the enemy to keep shooting thousands of rockets at them? That is just plain stupid.
A country that actually wants peace.
Someone has to take the first step; if all they want is peace, why won't Israel?
And maybe if Israel would only let itself be taken over by Hamas and Hezbollah there would be peace? Sounds almost as reasonable as letting someone continue to shoot missiles at your country while you "negotiate" with them.

I wonder what each religion's death toll is? Christianity #1? Has to be.
These are the results when you let invisible people run things. I don't understand the inherent need man has for god. Ignorence? Fear? The "live forever thing" is powerful magic.
Atheism would likely beat all of the religions. Hitler wasn't particularly religious and neither was Stalin or Chairman Mao. They are responsible for more deaths than religious leaders (likely combined).

If Israel disbanded their military forces and destroyed all of their weapons tomorrow what would happen to Israel? The answer is that there would be a massacre of Israeli citizens at the hands of Hamas and Hezbollah and Israel would no longer exist as a state (both are stated goals of those organizations). On the other hand, if Hamas and Hezbollah destroyed all of their weapons tomorrow what would be the outcome? The answer is that there would be peace.
Think about this.

Why would you move to an exotic foreign country and then stay in the most expensive areas isolated with other expats? If you cannot live in Thailand on a fraction of that $20,000 per month you are in my opinion someone that will soon be parted from his money.
