  1. envirogirl & drtreelove, thanks for your posts, i've been considering a stay of upto 6 months in india for a while now & have browsed inidamike for a wee bit, i'm hesistant as to how i'll react there though as i've read similar comments to your own & how it can be a complete shock to the system of even seasoned travellers, i'm not putting myself in that bracket by any means and that's why i've had my concerns, i'm essentially after a laid back atmosphere (lol as much as is possible) and would like to embrace the indian culture, with an interest & view to learning about the cuisine and yoga, i'd also like to visit the temples, the origins/path of buddha and if possible take a short break to the mountanous regions

any information & tips either of you could share would be greatly appreciated, i'm male & in my late 20's if this has any relevance

  2. lol i had to rattle my brain for a minute there to remeber some thai phrases with the yee sip lol but the nung, song rhoy bits etc are still floating about lol, they just take longer to find, i had an ok level of thai linguistics when i was last over but i can see that if/when i return to thailand that it will take a wee while to get back to the level i was at, never mind adding to it lol i'll be foe-dee-foe-dee-foe-dee- fining it for a while

  3. i've had 2 that spring to mind...once on a baht bus where i gave the guy 20 baht for a 10 baht fare and he tried to get cheeky and threatening as he wanted more money i just lol and walked back to his door and asked what he was saying? he then lowered his tone but didn't seem too happy then as he drove off called me a cheap charlie lol he was paid well for the distance travelled and must have been in the habbit of talking to older westerners with his manner and getting away due to intimidation or manipulation

another was a taxi that was to take me to the airport and this was a scam, the driver agreed the fare and then pulled up in the boonies at a petrol station about 10 minutes out of town...well away from any other taxis that i could travel in..he then demanded half of the agreed fare and said i''d have to change cars and pay the new driver(his pal) the initial agreed fare(i.e tried to bump the fare up by 50%)...i was in a situation like the op and needed to get to the airport for my flight...i stuck to my guns and told him that if he wanted half the fare then his pal was only going to get the other 50%...there would be no increase paid lol he didn't like it and tried to whine but i just said it was a problem for the 2 of them to resolve...then as i fiddled with my phone ignoring the pair of them i wondered aloud what the number was of the tourist police...within 2 minutes they relented, the original driver left in a huff but the new driver seemed pleasant enough on the journey, i arrived at the airport with plenty of time to spare and tipped the new driver twice, once with a couple of hundred baht and secondly with the info that his friend was a prick and best avoided as it would damage his reputation lol hindight being 20/20 they were probably related lol

  4. i think women need money to age well either with surgery on numerous body parts, botox, personal trainers and expensive skin creams etc but a man needs an exercise routine and access to a gym and a pair of running shoes...it's costs men a lot less to age well...as my uncle once said when he noticed an ex girlfriend crossing the road, he remarked on how she'd aged since her better years...

"the hands of time have been very kind to me, but it looks like they've given her an almighty smack" lol

    :)

  5. so what's new? corrupt thai police giving up some lower end criminals to take the heat away from the actions they are permitted to do daily...

ime this fake shares scam was happening over 3 years ago & it had been going a while back then as well, i haven't seen any posts on here to say they'd been stopped so i imagine it's a lot of money they've been earning but what's new? thailand is full of western criminals either laundering the money through fake companies or having numpties investing thier newly aquired bank loans to get a share of the action and a work permit lol there's some decent thai's and westerners in thailand but too many ejits on the western front either wannabe criminals, ex m15...wanted criminals that tell everyone they're wanted or just the losers that don't have a life in the west and love the feeling of power that thier money brings them, then you've the downright perverts that like to exploit the thai people lol this site will have it's fair share too so until a better type of tourist is attracted to thailand the thai's scamming the dafties that let them away with it are fair game e.g just pay the 500b fine and remember it's not your country brigade lol they're the numpties that let people steal thier dinner money or that thier partners cheated on back home & they'll always be a victim wherever they settle

  6. i want to see the picture now, i was offered this work along with another expat when we were in pattaya, it was a brit regular who travelled down at the weekends from bkk, i'd say he was on a lot more than 50k per month judging by his spending habbits, same story though, worked in bkk in a "boiler room" selling fake shares...honestly, i was interested in earning some cash with the amount he was spending until i heard that it was through scamming others and then kept my distance..the other expat felt the same as myself that it was disgusting behaviour in that it was robbing people of their life savings and could have been either 1 of our parents...i want to see the photo's & see if it's the same guy

throw the book at them all...it's not unkonwn & they were fully aware of what they were upto & i'd guess they were earning more than has been quoted too

  7. just a case of shopping around, i used to buy most of my sneakers in the big shopping centre near pattaya klang/naklua...the 1 with the cinema and kfc/pizzahut etc..the nike store on the 2nd floor was pretty good and used to get new arrivals quite a bit...but it's just bargain hunting really as you'll get cheaper in some stores than others...i noticed some bargains in the big c near sukhumvit near pattaya tai, there was a wee sports shop on the ground floor facing the food court and they had some bargains on the converse and canvas types as well as a few others...i don't know if these places are still there now though as i haven't been over in ages...& i'm not sure if they'd be as much of a bargain now compared to uk prices with the £ dropping in rate..back when it was 69-72 they were a steal

  8. anglo indian curries etc are usually served with more of a base sauce than traditonal indian cuisine which can be dryer dishes, infact most anglo indian curries are prepared by bangladeshis in the uk

traditional indian cuisine can (imo) be more like a home cooked meal than a mass produced food e.g the base sauce

whgen i was last in thailand i heard rave reviews about fawlty towers in either soi 6/8 i didn't visit that area too much though and when i decided on giving it a try i was informed that they'd sold out of curries lol...i took that as a good sign and made a point of returning only to be told they'd ceased making indian food lol

  9. the pharmacy a few doors down from the police station in jomtien was pretty good, it was a male pharmacist & he seemed reasonable....i got my quomen sp?(stop smoking tablets) from him & he discounted quite a bit & spoke & understood english

  10. lol i remember a pal had come over to visit & we were in the bfb & some 80+kg western guy walked in with his (queensbury) boxing coach lol first thoughts were why is a guy your size coming to thailand to challenge for fights with smaller guys...the next thing he's saying that he doesn't want anything but a boxing match & no cheating/fouling lol(big man eh lol)

so up steps a wee thai lad, must have been 15yrs old, so a wee bet takes place between my pal & i, my pal's sure that the big guy's gonna dominate but i informed him that the thai's can fight & loss of face being important he's likely to give a good showing as the crowd that had gathered were mostly thai

1st round, the big guy floors the wee fella with pretty much his first punch, put him down again in the same round...2nd round the wee thai came out and boxed his socks off lol by the end of the 3rd the western fella was asking questions on queer street lol where am i lol if it'd gone another round i'm sure he'd have been ko'd...needless to say the wee thai fella won, my pal ended up having to buy a few rounds for picking the loser & the wee thai lad got a few baht off myself & most of the complex lol

  11. i used to prefer the best friends bar complex on beach road, you'd get some good boxing matches in there now & then, occasional show fight but a lot less than the 2 complexs on walking street, i think a couple of the kru's from sityodtong ref in there

  12. i'd say it depends where you are in the country in the boonies it might be worth just paying them off but in built up areas/cities don't let them away with it...perhaps you look like a victim to them...that's what thieves/robbers/attackers look for in their marks..head down lacking confidence etc

i've kicked off big style a couple of times, once i was stopped on a bike that had been rented yet the people i'd rented from hadn't left the papers with the bike...the copper was after me paying him off lol i just said not my problem, i hired the bike legally and if you want to fine anybody it's the owner of the bike...issued with a ticket for 400 baht which was paid for by the people i hired the bike from...of course they tried it on as well lol

another time i needed a replacement bank card for scb in jomtien...they said i had to make a police report as it was procedure...so off i went to the jomtien office and saw the head honcho, he said as the card had been lost and not stolen i needed to pay 500 baht for the report or i would be breaking the law with a fraudulent report lol i just gave him a look and said you sure?..payed the moeny and returned to the bank, inside the bank i then asked to speak to somebody in charge at the main office, had a conversation with a gentleman in bangkok and when i expressed my displeasure in trying to get a replacemt card, having to visit a police station and then paying 500b i felt the bank should reimburse the monies...the guy on the phone was informed of the law and said i'd been scammed and that the officer was pulling a fast1...i was in the bank another 10 minutes and then as i left i went straight back to the police station, there was the copper all smiles lol what can i do for you? lol i just said well you can give me my 500 baht back now lol his face was a picture and he then opened his wallet and handed me back 5 x 100 baht(i'd given him a 500 note) i just walked out and that was the end of it...plenty of others said i'd been foolish but nothing came of it and i had my money back...if you let them away with it then they'll take liberties with you all day long

i also had a fallout with the police on beach road after they let a paedophile that i caught in an internet cafe walk free(pay off) they tried to talk some crap how this is thailand etc...i just reminded them that they were a tourist destination and i was aware of my rights, i then contacted my lawyer who inturn reported the incident to the chief of the area...of course nothing came of that & i imagine if/when i do return to pattaya the same paedophile will be walking the streets and surfing the internet for child pornography

i'm sorry you experienced this but my advice and i practice what i preach is don't let them away with it

    best wishes

  13. it's great that you can cook your own curry but why the mushrooms? that's not something i've seen in an indian curry in 20 years of eating them...it sounds more like a fusion with chinese curries

there used to be a good wee indian restaurant opposite paragon property down by jomtien, this is going back nearly 3 years now though...back then the indian in royal garden was ok...but the jomtien restaurant was better, another good wee curry was sold in a restaurant joined to a tailors outside vt1 but again this is going back a few years...i tried all the others at the time, the upmarket one lol near bruno's and the ali baba's whatever the name was...needless to say they were robbing barstewards with the quality of food for the price and that was when the exchange rate was pretty good

i can add a couple of links if people would like that list numerous authentic indian recipes...some in the style of anglo-indian and donated by active restaurants...bit of pre-cooking needed but worth the effort for an authentic anglo-indian meal, ingredients should be easy to source in pattaya

  14. here's a question i'd like to add to this thread...

and please try and answer as honestly and seriously as possible( lol if that's possible)

to all the farang men that are in a relationship with a woman 20+ years your jnr, if you have children and for sake of arguement lets say a daughter

how would you feel if your daughter was involved with a man 20+ years her age or her husband was the same age or older than you the farang/dad

would this matter? would you feel comfortable? would you believe as long as your daughter is happy that it's not a problem?

or would you find the whole situation uneasy? or would being in a relataionship with a large age gap yourself remove any stigma and ill feeling towrads your daughters older partner?

  15. lol i still remember the continetal :) lol

i don't know if jeed n jules are still in thailand, last time i was there they'd moved into the shop in vt1

i haven't been over in a few years but back then canterbury tales?(lol think that was the name but i might be telling a tale lol) in soi chayaipoon was pretty good

i'll have to get back over & i'll check out this thread to see where to avoid but the continental was rank when i was there last & i don't think wifi had been invented lol

  16. if your gf applied for the tourist visa at the thai embassy from point of origin it may give you more time to think things through and look for the best options, i'm assuming that there's no problems with the embassy in the phillipines? if so she could get a double entry there..arrive and activate the visa and with a 30 day extention giving her 3 moths before needing to do a border run..when she re-enters thailand she would then have another 3months( 60+30)

with that option you have potentially 6 months to plan the best embassy to visit outside of thailand and apply for another double tourist visa..i'm not sure if triple entry visa's are still being issued or are available in your gf's area..the only thing with the x3 is it's a matter of timing and you may need to use the 3rd entry before 6 months to get the full benefits(e.g you will lose a couple of days from the max stay) but it could be a cheaper option doing it this way

lol sorry if you've already considered this but other than that as long as the embassies that your gf is planning to visit issue tourist visas then you're set with your plans

    all the best

ps i'm no expert but just from my own experience

  17. Good job they don't just punish all people with mental disorders because England had a King that was mad , King George, he went mad , then they found out it was a vitamin deficiency. so I suppose that blows punishment out of the water , how do you punish some one who does not know they have done wrong ,People are to quick to judge not knowing all the facts, help and understanding is what is needed, not punishment.

i think you'll find that mental health is a more recent discovery in medicine & of course with the situation, especially in thailand, you can see how monarchs are above everything including law and criticism

people with mental health problems have been punnished for crimes or alleged crimes for centuries, the prisons today are filled with mentally ill prisoners, however by locking up these *poor/ill/sick* criminals we've made the streets a wee bit safer

i.e for all the innocent people that don't suffer from a mental illness that causes them become violent & harm/attack/steal from innocent individuals

  18. this thread seems to attract the same type lol

g54, you've quoted that guy yet have you bothered to read what you've quoted?

do you not see the bit where he says "Help her for sure, where possible"? no of course you didn't

i don't care how this sounds as there's obviously some weirdos in this thread but when a child dies and punnishment is a secondary measure it highlights a social problem..perhaps that's why so many choose to settle in a semi-lawless country

take that how you want it, but that fella including myself never said don't help the girl, infact if any of you are capable of actually reading then you'd see that help was always mentioned..yet when you focus on the child(victim) rather than the mother(murderer/criminal) then suddenly you're cold hearted lol not at all & i seriously question some of the people that have posted in this threads personality traits lol maybe it's just because it was a poor thai girl though

there should always be help when a crime is commited and there usually is, i find it absurd that i'm having to spell this out when i can bet a good guess that a few in this thread are a wee bit long in the tooth

sutcliffe, hindley, west etc etc all have *help* it allows us to understand what's happened and potentially prevent the same thing happening again, however the help is secondary to them being locked up, if somebody suffers from ptsd and shoots innocent people as a result of the illness then again help is needed but is secondary to punnishment

no wonder thailands in the state it is and no wonder life is so cheap

just throw some magic pills at the poor wee thai girl and it will all go away ?

..and again i can't believe i'm having to spell this out, pnd isn't that rare either...however it's extremely rare when you look at the amount that suffer for individuals to become violent like in this case, sure it's always a possible but the fact murders like this are rare shows that it's a minority of sufferers that snap and harm others, just like a minority of healthy people will snap and harm others

  19. i understand what you are saying thonkorn, i'm just expressing my opinion that every murderer has an angle or tragic story to tell if you want to empathise or listen to them, but i believe the only valid excuse for murder is self defense

..many paedophiles have suffered some form of abuse and if you want to play a wee violin for them you can say it's not their fault that they have become the monsters they are, but they still need to be locked up and to pay for their crimes

...the same with poor uneducated children that are brought up without a life of luxury, society can change peoples outlooks and beliefs, this is well documented in medicine as well and while it allows us to understand the cause it doesn't excuse the act nor should be used as a defense to avoid punnishment, by all means enter it as mitigation but they should still be punnished to the extent of the law

i pity the victims more than i pity the offenders
