One incident that stuck in my mind was at a shoe-shine stand in Chicago. I was getting my own shoes shined, and having a pleasant conversation with the black guy doing them. Huge fellow, he had played pro football until his knees tore up.

A few stands down, a white man climbed into one of the chairs, with the instruction " Put a good polish on them boots, boy". The boots he wore were so badly scuffed there was zero chance of a good shine.

The guy doing my shoes must have seen the incredulous expression on my face. He quietly said " This is what we have to deal with all our lives".

How many decades ago was that?

Hmm, how is you relationship, mine has been perfect for the past 17 years, just saying, oh and in my opinion most are p's, some you pay for directly, others indirectly, but you pay......LoL

I guess your relationship has been perfect for 17 years because you pay a lot??  So no complaints and lots of compliance!

I used to go to the fabled Bottom Line nightclub in New York. They had separate menu's for Japanese people with inflated prices.

In my deeply Trumpian hometown, there's a tax on hotel rooms. They have no prob putting aside their fervent anti-tax posturing to squeeze outsiders for a few bucks.

Europe is contemplating visitor fees in places like Venice. Most cruise ships pay to dock in a port. Those fees are hidden in the cruise price.

Thailand does none of these things.

What are you talking about, Thailand DOES all of that.  There is a fee to visit Thailand itself at the airport …your exit fee, your visa fee.

Do you think your English menu is always the same price as Thai menus???   Have you not heard of the commission your girlfriend/date can make after taking her out to a seafood restaurant? The restaurant keeps a little notebook and the girls go back the next day and pick up the cash.

Hotel tax, everywhere in the world.  Cruise ships, same.

  4. Maisodni,

Are you okay?  You don’t need that money anymore right?  I read some of your posting history and it seems you are legitimate.  But you wrote that you get a pretty good SS check so I wonder why you would need to do this?  And if your mental health is okay or your health in general?  Or if you realized you were being scammed?

I mean overall, your post is worrying and maybe you need some help, that is my point.  Let us know what we can do and someone who is in Bangkok can come check on you???

  5. Now that I am thinking about it, I wonder if the driver just totally made up the part about your bag hitting his car?  Did the police see that on video?  Is your bag hanging off your bike in such a way that is possible?  It is no excuse obviously for the man to hit you later but since Thais hate to admit fault he had to think of some lie.

I was hit from behind while slowing, in the day, with my turn signal on, my lights all worked, and two motor bikes driving together, one or both of them hit me, then they both fell down.  Then they got up from the street and jumped on their bikes and drove away!  Every Thai person I told about this, advised me to make a up a lie for my insurance company.  They would say I should say I got hit in a parking lot while I was shopping.  I think they all thought I was making up my story to some degree.  I would ask them, why should I lie, I didn’t do anything wrong, and it might be obvious I am making up a story?  It was just a repair to my bumper about 18 years ago, so it cost maybe 4000 or 6000 baht I think, I just paid it myself.

I never asked people what I should do either, they would ask how my car got like that and I would tell them and next sentence would be their suggested lie, every single time!!

Maybe the guy was just drunk.  He thinks this story is better because he was too dumb to realize he was admitting to attempting to murder you.  If he really did that I think he would say his brakes failed.

  6. It was a road rage incident??!!  WHAT??  Are they going to arrest him?  Is he negotiating?

I’m shocked although it has happened to me nearly, I’ve been chased around the city, I just out drove them.  I don’t know what would have happened if they caught up with me.  For honking of course, to prevent an accident.

  7. Dear Sister, Be aware that many lawyers here are not trustworthy and will flat out scam you/steal your money as one poster above has suggested.  Everyone is going to be looking for some extra money from you, so be ready.  Also be ready to negotiate it way down, if you are going to pay it.  Often if you pay someone’s first price here, they will rethink it, come back and ask for more!

  8. Well if what his sister wrote is true, than it seems very unlikely, if not impossible that he could have overwhelmed and stabbed to death a normal, healthy, younger man.

The word she was looking for is aphasia. Maybe that is why they are saying he is changing his story.  And possible that he can’t even walk and that is why neighbors found him crawling outside afterwards?

Maybe the victim had a lover who did not expect the Norwegian man to recover and come home.  The lover came over and had a confrontation or just decided to kill him.  Drunken rage?  Didn’t a German guy experience something like that …he stabbed to death his wife’s lover who jumped their wall and decided to have it out with her one night?  I never have heard what happened with that.  She tried to say it was a burglar.

Exactly. I never understand people who boast about how poorly they live in Thailand. In the same way, I don't understand people who come on here and boast about how much they spend every month either. I remember some German guy on here who was always boasting about his ridiculously high (IMO) electricity bills every month as if that somehow made him better than everyone else.

That German guy was called Naam, and I haven’t seen him post for a long time.  Does anyone know what happened to him?

  10. Actually it has been quite a nightmare in most measurable ways …in comparison I suppose.  The only good thing is that I have central air con and about 5-6 months of so-called winter that isn’t hotter than hell.  Really, that is all.????

    Food sucks too!!

  11. I’m waiting for Hurricane Ian where I live now.  I’m thinking Thailand has had less extreme weather than what I have been experiencing since living here.  I have already been through two hurricanes in 4 years, multiple lightening hits to my house, and near tornadoes.  I think I might have made a mistake moving back to the US.

Very wet all the way through San Sai and MaeJo, flooded road outside my moobaan.

Torrential rain all through last night and most of last week.

Forecast of heavy rain for the next week.

I meant to quote that before I wrote above.  And Orang37, I hope you will be okay.

  13. I want to express to BritMantoo, shock, holy cow, oh my god, <deleted>, but we only have stupid versions of “like” to hit now in response to massive flooding.  It makes no sense and I think he is saying maybe my old housing village might be suffering also and I am curious about that.  I have been in some serious floods in Chiang Mai and gives me a lot of anxiety and concern for others now that I know what it is like to live through total devastation, like what happened to me in 2005.

And near flooding in 2011?  when I lived near Mee Chok market.  I guess that is happening again?  I hope everyone is okay!!

  14. I think this is in the wrong forum.  The OP used to live in Chiang Mai, maybe that forum or the Chat forum, or someplace the older members will remember and welcome him back?  Nobody will see it here, could a mod please move this??

Welcome back John, sorry to hear of your dementia issues, hope you can join in posting more with us!!
