  1. my missus has been a british citizen for the past 10 years and the other week i sent off a passport renewal form, thinking it would be straight-forward, oh no. today they've phoned her and from what i can gather they are querying the spelling of her place of birth, ubon ratchathani. when she got citizenship it was recorded as "ubon ratchatarni" as at that time that was how I believed it was spelt. so there is a discrepancy and apparently they said to her they want to see her thai borth certificate, which her folks dont have and would probably take weeks or longer to obtain. we're booked to go to thailand on 30th July. to complicate matters her thai passport run out last week and the middle of this month we are due to go to the thai embassy, london to sort that out.

surely it would be ok to send british passport office her thai passport (though now expired) as that shows the correct speling of ubon ratchathani?

my other question is worse - case we get the thai passport sorted and she flies out and back in on her new thai passport? after all she is a british citizen. would appreciate any advice as she didnt go home last year and i dont want this petty bureaucracy to screw things up.

  2. ^it will take more than a paint job to save that dump. which is a shame as i remember staying there many times in the early noughties and thinking how nice it was. last stayed there two years ago (only because sunee was full) and the whole place seems to have given up since the sunee opened

  3. well folks we stayed in phuket for 4 nights but t'was not to be for myself. at my previous accommodation in ubon, managed to contract a very severe case of gastroenteritis and perhaps foolishly continued with our travel plans; whole day travelling - ubon-suvarnabhumi-don muang-phuket. by the time we got to grand pacific in karon at 1800 had to call out a very nice doctor from the travel clinic, who diagnosed even before she arrived and had everything ready. took me days to recover,in fact our last day i felt 100%. which is a shame, as our accommodation was fantastic and i loved the beach at karon and even managed to get some body boarding in on our last day. ive been to most beach places in thailand except samui but phuket seems lovely and cant wait to get back there. just one thing i didnt like....RUSSIANS...

  4. contradicting myself here but now am looking at karon/kata despite previously saying i wanted quiet. was all set to book pacific club resort but realised its apparently 20 min walk to the beach. is it possible to get somewhere nearer the beach for 2000-5000 a night?

  5. my family and i are hopefully off to phuket next month. need accommodation thats family friendly, has places to eat near-by so not restricted to the hotel and above all, quiet, patong and the like is not our scene. any suggestions o wise ones?

  6. howdy y'all. my family and i are off on our annual trip to thailand next month. we;re going to ubon, in an area between det udom and nahm yuen where the in=laws live. i usually take malerone but the prices here in the uk are obscene (quoted £120 for two weeks worth by travel clinic). naturally when i mentioned getting them cheaper in thailand the nurse started going on about either ending up with fake tablets or not having them at all. will an average bkk pharmacy stock them? we usually stay in pratunam

  7. the other day i booked a flight from bangkok to ubon with thai smile for november - the departure code is BKK which I assume to mean Suvarnabhumi as the other departure code is DMK. but i thought Thai smile were switching all flights to don muang

  8. ^totally agree. would love nothing more than my daughter to grow up in Ubon but the schools there are terrible. yes its true to a point that what the kids learn at home is important but theres no substitute for a decent education. the only true international school is St Stephens in Khao Yai with fees as big as anything in the UK to match

  9. any fellow ubonites..my missus village is off the main road, about half way between det udom and nahm yuen - has there been many cases of malaria this monsoon ? dont know if Jim from buntarik still posts on here but would appreciate his two cents. visiting with my 4 year old daughter in november and she wont take the bloody malaria tablet, even when chocolate is part of the equation
