  1. It is also the matter of preparing food, staff and other for an estimated number of guests, and only 2/3 show up, but I think Martin take his precautions - or at least will do next time! :D

George did ring me and tell me 116 were coming, but as it was at 22.00 I didn't believe a word of it. Actually we catered for 75, and I bought beer for 100. So, I have enough stock for this week.

If it's still free ........I might pop up again :D:D

    :o:D :D :D

Got back from Ozz yesterday. What little of the party I thought I was at was great. Felt like <deleted> at 06:00 in the morning when I arrived in BKK.

    Thanks to everyone concerned.

    Cheers

  2. I am looking at buying some land for rice farming in a small village near Surin. Does anyone have recent experiece in buying such land. Appeciate any advice you can give.

    thanks

    Al

You'll probably get more accurate information from others but I would think you should expect to pay between Bht 10,000 and 25,000 per rai depending upon location and access.

Note: In my experience unless you are able to grow 2 crops per year, don't expect to return a profit of much more than Bht 1,500 per rai.

  3. Mushy Peas

Mushy peas are dried marrowfat peas which have been soaked overnight and then boiled. They are a great favourite of the north of England and are a traditional accompaniment to fish and chips.

INGREDIENTS: Dried marrowfat peas - 225 g, Bicarbonate of soda - * tsp, Unsalted butter - 15 g, Salt and freshly ground black pepper.

COOKING:1. In a large basin, soak the peas overnight (or for at least 4 hours) in three times their volume of cold water, with the bicarbonate of soda.

    2. Rinse the peas well and put them into a medium saucepan and cover with cold water. Bring to a boil and then reduce the heat to simmer for approximately 1 - 2 hours stirring from time to time, until the peas are cooked and have fallen to a softened mush.

    3. If they appear too wet, continue cooking over a low heat to drive off any excess moisture, but take care to keep stirring, to prevent them burning on the base of the pan.

    4. Beat in the butter, salt and pepper to taste.

    Recipe from Britannia recipes.

I usually add a little bicarb at the cooking stage also - helps to break down the skins and shortens the cooking time a little.

    Here ya go:

  4. Good to know he's still got his sense of humour.............

<Krook> FEW didn't like me telling her to leave the room whilst having a bed bath

<toaster> why did you want FEW to leave during a bed bath ?

<Krook> in case of a happy finish

Note: FEW = "Future Ex Wife"

  5. I suppose that this forum is as good a place as any.

I have been searching over the net in vain. I wish to purchase a bicycle protective helmet. Has anyone any idea if such an item is available in Thailand?

I've tried online stores but they are quoting around USD 60.00 addition for handling and shipping for a USD 25.00 helmet.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Cheers

  6. Just to confuse the matter further; the following are given in an old Thai diary that I have:

    1 coyan 16 pikuls paddy................................... 968 kg

or 22 pikuls cargo rice................................... 1,330 kg

1 kwien 23 pikuls white rice............................... 1,391 kg

    Rice miller's kwien:

    82 baskets of 40 lbs each = 24 pikuls ................1,488 kg

    And the following other conversions:

    Length

    1 kabiet ........................................... 5 mm

    4 kabiet = 1 nieu............................... 20 mm

    12 nieu = 1 keub .............................. 250 mm

    2 keub = 1 sawk ............................... 500 mm

    4 sawk = 1 wah ................................ 2 m

    20 wah = 1 sen ................................ 40 m

    400 sen = 1 yote .............................. 16 km

    Area

    1 sq wah ........................................... 4 sq m

    100 sq wah = 1 ngan ......................... 400 sq m

    4 ngam = 1 rai .................................. 1,600 sq m

    Capacity

    1 standard tanan ............................... 1 litre

    20 standard tanan = 1 standard sat .... 20 litres

    50 standard sat = 1 standard ban ....... 1,000 litres

    2 standard ban = 1 standard kwien ..... 2,000 litres

    Weight

    1 baht (tical) ..................................... 15 gm

    4 baht = 1 tamlung ............................ 60 gm

    20 tamlung = 1 chang (kati)................ 1.2 kg

50 chang (katis) = 1 hap (pikul) ......... 60 kg (plus a headache the size of a small planet)

    Unless anyone knows better?

  7. Happy Birthday. Any particular reason there is " 16 " when you're " 60 " on the Cake or am i really confused ?? :o

In Thai terms he's actually 61 so the grils had put that number on. It looks like he transposed the numbers.

I sent this card on Monday but he didn't receive it so I'll post it here:

  8. The company has just introduced a new large can (50 millilitres), reflecting the growing tendency among budget-conscious consumers to hold social gatherings with friends and colleagues at home instead of going out.

    50 millilitres at 27 Bath ? 540 Bath a liter

    Methinks it's a typo - should read 500 ml.

Archa has increased in price during the last six months from Bht 280.00 to Bht 335.00 per case (12 x 560 ml). Given that plus the decrease in my pension (exchange rate) of almost 10% plus a doubling of UK income t*x and the increased cost of diesel, I'll soon be broke!

Whilst I'm here I may as well put my vote in regarding the disgusting taste of Cheers "beer".

  9. Are there problems with finding quality cement or sand in thailand or does it not much matter? The reason I ask is becasue I hear people talking about thai houses falling apart quickly, is it ever the actual concrete that decays? What about fiber mesh to add to the mix, is that available and advisable?

I my (very inexperienced) opinion, the 'falling apart' of Thai houses has more to do with the inadequacy of the foundations or the cost 'savings' on steel reinforcement than the quality of the concrete.

As far as 'fibre mesh' additives, I'm lost on this one.

  10. The mix of concrete these days is different to when I was a lad but as a rule of thumb, I still use:

1:2:4 mix (smooth finish) - 1 part cement, 2 parts sand, 4 parts aggregate (by weight)

1:3:6 mix (rough finish, foundation concrete) - 1 part cement, 3 parts sand, 6 parts aggregate.

For mortar (brickwork), 1 part cement, 3 parts sand.

For screed I would use the same formula as mortar perhaps with slightly less sand.

The volume of water added is a little trial and error but basically the slump should be no more than 50 mm for bog standard construction.

    J

Simple slump test: fill a small bucket with concrete and vibrate well. Tip the bucket upside down on a level surface and gently remove the bucket leaving a concrete cone. The top of the cone should not slump more than 50 mm from the height of the bucket.

  11. ...he article says ...

If with “article” you mean a newspaper article it will be best if you disregard anything you read in newspapers about extension of stay rules because everything I have seen so far in newspapers usually got part of it wrong.

The attached is what the Immigration Bureau’s English translation of the official rules says about the “marriage extension” (highlighting is mine)

    Maestro

Do you know when that Order came into force, Maestro? It doesn't indicate any date on the .pdf file.

  12. Then why they don't tell me "sorry you need a work permit" instead of giving me this BS with "must update passport" and then "must change customer type".... i still haven't gotten time to go there again but already wonder, after "changing customer type" what will follow? "Must sing Mambo Nr.5 on a dark and stormy night in front of bank"??

    Best regards.....

    Thanh

I was told that at a branch office (I originally opened the account on a 30 day exemption stamp). When I went to the "head office", they said I couldn't change my customer type because I didn't have a w*rk permit.

  13. I would never trust e-banking that can be used on Internet Explorer only. It is not so much a question of IE or Firefox, but a question of compliance with standard HTML code. If a site works only in IE , not in Firefox, it means that some proprietary stuff has been used in coding and it is this that can make a site unsafe.

I initially used Microsoft Publisher (a mistake, I now know) to build my websites. Firefox (which I use) and Netscape have no problems with the sites but Microsoft I.E. appears confused with it.

PS. I have since gained a little more experience and have rewritten the sites using Kompozer (plus some direct HTML editing).

  14. Went to my branch (Chiangmai) and presented it with passport and work permit. They photocopied them and put the info in the computer. Took about 30 minutes but had to wait 3 weeks for the number/password to come from Bangkok. Pleasantly easy in my case.

But then again, your question may be rhetorical. :o

That's the key, Tiswas. I could not obtain access to Bangkok Bank's internet banking because I didn't have a w*rk permit.

No problem with Kasikorn or Siam Commercial (I'm told).
