Because it is the end of the year and people travel to their family now?

Yup.... Many Thais go home to their villages/families a few 'special days' as NEW YEAR...

That is the reason for reporting 'Road Fatalities' (because the number of deaths are HORRIFIC) on certain holidays through-out the year..... After the holidays you should see 'most' of them return........ Unless of course our beloved PM chooses to move them off the sidewalks as he did in other areas previously.... My Mrs. had 7 members of her Family selling fried pork, put out of business in Bangkok by the PM's push to clear the sidewalks a couple of those 'stall sellers' who were put out of business had earned enough to put 3 children through UNIVERSITY.... first graduates in the history of their family...... I'm so sad for the 'working Thais

NOW with this present Gov't.....  Only the gov't folks and the already rich folks ARE thought of now days... NOT the massive numbers of poor who are out there on the roads dying this holiday.... Now you know why many of the food sellers are not there, and those who survive the trip home on Thai highways will re open after the holidays....

Wow that’s not normally something you see in the open in broad daylight.

My friend, between 1-2 years ago told me that in PP they were right out in the open, on the street.... He only considered the novelty... He didn't consider getting caught with them or the thought about them 'really' being counterfeit money....

  3. I will never forget that a friend of mine who is retired living in Pattaya... He flys to Canbodia once/twice a year. A couple/three years ago he saw a vendor in PP selling bundles of US$100 bills that looked quite real.. so he bought a pack and brought the bundle back to Pattaya and to pass around to his MANY lady friends... When he showed them to me as a novelty........

I scared the hell out of him by asking IF THAI CUSTOMS AT THE AIRPORT. inspected his bags????.... He replied NO... That is when I scared the hell out of him by enlightening him as to what Thai Police would have done to him for smuggling 'COUNTERFEIT CURRENCY'........

He hadn't given a thought to that.......... OTHER TRAVELLERS CAN LEARN FROM THIS.......

  4. JUST CURIOUS..........  Is it Passport and too frequent visits issue. Or are you trying to smuggle something in without being caught.... ????

EDITED to add.... see my other post just below as a warning to others about a friend of mine taking a high risk coming into Thailand with 'Counterfeit $100s' with innocent intent.....

You might want to check the small print. It was a strategy I considered until I found 'must be ordinarily resident' (UK) clause ,which of course you wouldn’t be as any cursory check of your passport would reveal. In the UK ???????? insurers etc. have access to the electoral role (central register of who lives at the property) too. Any claim would require passport and air ticket copies so you would not get away with it.

YOU ARE.... Sooooo Right............  I have been 'burned' pretty bad, a few times BECAUSE I DIDN'T READ....... the small print....... NOW.... I won't do anything.... until I read their 'sneaky' FINE PRINT...... If you don't read the small print..... BEND OVER, and prepare to 'Groan'.....

Effectively they have changed the deal on OA holders without grandfathering. This is not a good precedent and not the only recent example. The fact that a workaround is currently available if you fulfill new criteria does not make it any less an official changing of the deal - especially as this workaround could be due to error/oversight.

Thailand has eroded ALL my trust............. I think ALL expats will do good to look at other countries (including HOME country) to escape to....... If YOU don't do it (look and research) NOW, YOU will be 'Hard Pressed' to do it at the last moment....... With this Government that just wants 'More Money'...... There is NO HOPE LEFT'...... SO... Plan ahead.... OR BE 'sorry'.......

If we are LUCKY............. Another gov't will come along soon.... IF NOT...... cover your 'back-side'

No, the female  performers emit ping-pong balls from their vaginas

Yes...... many years ago (the 80's) i was at one of the Patpong 'upstair bars' and the ping-pong show was in process as I entered and the girl shooting the ping-pong balls from her vagina 'targeted ME'.

The next day after I was in my hotel room I noticed a blood stain on my shirt where the ball hit me.......... Than made me very happy............ That I 'didn't'........... (Did Not)........ buy her out for that night ......... LOL .........

I have many 'fond memories' of Patpong however...... Including one 'EX-WIFE'......

"We get to soon OLD....... and too late SMART............. LOL ............. HaHaHa

  8. Wow..... I read this with interest...........

I live in California in the USA and we can buy Baileys and and BOMBAY and Smirnoff for about $7 (About 230 BAHT) a 750 bottle (when on Sale-- Often at one shop or the other)....... California has cheap liquor as does Nevada..... I travel to Thailand often (6 or more times a year). So needless to say, at my house (in Pattaya) I have a well stocked Bar.....may I invite you over????...... The 'Dakside in Pattaya'..... (Eastside)

Also in California a '5 liter' box of wine.... the best Merlot or Cabernet (sp), REDS, or Chardonet (sp) (whites) are about $14 (460 Baht) a box.....(5 liters)..... In Tesco and BigC I see 2 and 3 liter boxes for much more than that..... Once in a great while Thai Customs will get me with a bottle of whiskey and a box of wine (But seldom) so they always choose to confiscate my whiskey and let me take the wine....... "Not a great loss.. at California Prices".....

You honestly believe they will invest/pay out money for a  fresh clean filter when it would make absolutely no difference to the user and the customer would have no way of knowing anyway.

I would say ..."beware" the potential hazards and following medical costs far out way the pennies you might save.

My long time wife in Pattaya has a number of lady friends that she has known for years.... One lady works for the district offices in Banglamung and was given a truck/driver/test equip to go aroung testing those water machines..... Results:  Rarely was a machine anyway near to 'Passable Quality'...... Seems once a new machine was installed... NEVER were new filters installed......

I asked the Mrs. why the friend didn't write-up or have the machines taken out of service....... SHE SAID " that wasn't part of the friends job to do that"    You go figure is my thought...... THIS IS THAILAND (TIT)

OP, yes, pay your girlfriend. How much depends on many factors. Mostly try to figure out how much she turns over in a month and go from there. What is the minimum she'd accept to do only you is what you're seeking.

Or.... better yet......... Go slow.... Take your time........... When you make 'snap judgements'.... You screw up.... Thailand is SO FULL of 'Worthy' girls (That you won't meet till after she 'locks you in')....  GO SLOW.... before commiting yourself...... I have about 35 years experience here.... and still learning.......

maybe because you travel to the US a lot.  It doesn't necessarily mean you are American now does it?

YOU ARE RIGHT ALSO......... But as an American I am welcomed with that 'Welcome Back' often.......... I suppose some Thai/Russian/Nigerian/Turk/Chinese/Bangladeshi could be greeted similarly......... Percentage-wise???? I think not so likely...... BUT ..... YES....... IT'S POSSIBLE..... As you say........

And good luck to get your money out of bank if your are denied entry...

Here is a back up plan.......... I have online banking with Kasikorn (I think all banks have it)...... If this happened to you... you could do online transfers......(while outside Thailand).... I'm not sure about doing international transfers online but very possible..... I use my Kasikorn online from my home (must have WiFi) in the USA and transfer money several times a week to different folks in Thailand (500 b here and there to some ladies and up to 50,000 b to some family).... ALL while I'm in the USA.... I can also 'Top-up' any Thai cellphone (20b to 200b) from my online banking on my cellphone........

So.... With that in mind... (and I think everybody would LOVE this, as I do)... as I quoted from the OP should be easy to remedy if you were denied entry and had money in the bank you could transfer it to others who could transfer it out for you....

I have a retirement Visa good till Sept. 2019, but iI livee in the USA and just spend about half my time in Thailand..... I keep 100,000 to 300,000 in my bank at any given time (even it not required of me) (Yet)..... 'I will never" put 800,000b in Thailand for them to 'fatten' their 'happy face' with (and cost me horribly in 'exchange rates')..........

I can easily cut my visits back to 'occasional' within the time frame allowed for tourists.......

My main contribution here is the info about the 'Online Banking'....... I have been in and out of Thailand nearly 40 years, and just last year discovered this 'online banking' convenience.........................

Thailand is my 'FAVORITE CHARITY'.... ISSAN especially (NOT the present Gov't) and I can make contributions to my 'Poor Friends' even whil I am in the USA....... I have adopted a few Issan families, and often visit them, and small amounts of money that don't hurt me can make a nice improvement to their daily/monthly menu........

  13. I can't help but to have my own idea that there could be some Thai Govt. scheme to bring more cash into Thailand.......

I would not be surprised to learn that Thailand has made some 'arrangemrnts' with certain countries embassies to force expats to bring 800,000 baht to Thailand........... This Thai govt now days are making so many plays to improve the image of Thailand (falsely) that my therorie kind makes sense.... If you think about it...... all of the 800,000 bahts (per expat) that come into Thailand tend to boost the amount of 'assets' that Thailand can boast about (in their posession)..... and bottom line, the amount of money (value) that is within the country of Thailand, enhanses it's image (face)........... Strictly my own opinion but if you waste a bit of your time to analyse this possible scheme, you might think a bit as I do.........

Ask yourself why all the embassies are 'all of a sudden' doing this????????

Deals are made every day that we don't 'suspect' ..... and certainly in Thailand......

Do you think for a minute that the 'Heads of our embassies' cannot be involved in 'deals'......... I admit I have no proof, so let's wait and see........... But I do 'suspect' this present Thai Govt a lot...... And their 'motives'........

My boy has two passports, my concern is whether or not (when push come to shove) Thailand actually legally recognizes duel citizenship.

Several of my THAI family and friends have two or more and they can enter Thailand using which ever one they choose.......

Each having different 'conditions'...... example..... enter on Thai passport and stay here as long as you like..... enter on US passport and have to leave in 30 days (unless however they got a visa for longer).........

I am sure they would want to see that it is transferred from abroad.

That would make it an expensive and difficult workaround to do.

    3 minutes ago, Pattaya46 said:

That would mostly mean a change of law (Police Order)

and would bring serious trouble on all those who live from Thai investment.

Fortunately I am not 'Stuck' in Thailand......... After next Sep. 3 when my Retirement Visa Expires, I am making my plans to go with 'Tourist Visa" for 2 months and OUT for 2 months and not accumulate more than 6 months per year......... The money I SAVE I will donate to the 'Childrens Foundation' and let Thailand HURT for a while (until this Military dictatorship feels some pain)............

But there would have to be some way to prove that this was 'new' money every month and not just a revolving door account where you deposit - withdraw and then re-deposit the same money month after month.

I could wire via SWIFT US$2100 from my US bank to Kasikorn. Withdraw from Kasikorn. Deposit in Bangkok Bank and wire via SWIFT back to the US bank for less than US$100 per month.

BUT...... Yhat is $1200 per year Expense......... Does it proove to be worth it?

  17. That guy who heads the gov't presently and who is having to raise money to pay for some 'submarines and tanks' to pay for in coming years and all this 'inflow' of 800,000 here and there, due to this change, will 'swell' the funds that the banks hold within the country. Even though the money is yours, It is in Thailand and the banks are in posession of it till you withdraw it..... It is in the 'Bank's operating capital' and makes the country look more prosperous and in roundabout ways create less concern of gov't spending and makes more funds available for the gov't.........

Since 'Big Joke' is now heading the Immigrations he is a part of the 'scheme' to cause more expats to move more money (800,000 THB per expat) to Thailand for these new 'requirements'...........

By putting the 'squeeze' on the Embassies the Thai gov't and Immigrations may anticipate large amounts of money coming into the country....

Also..... Another thought, which isn't that 'far-fetched in Thailand' is 'pay-offs' to somebody in the Embassies to co-operate in this 'scheme'..... This just sharing a personal suspicion, without any concrete evidence........ LOL .....
