  1. This is a good thread. I too have reached the point where, after being here for 8 years, there is very little to go back to Canada for. I have a brother who refuses to make any effort to stay in touch which really upsets me but I have slowly come to realize that Thailand is my home now and that there is no "returning home" any more.

My brother disappeared to Canada and dropped of the face of the earth. Haven't seen or heard from him in about 24 years. Don't even know if he is still alive. I tried to keep in touch but he couldn't be bothered and all contact was lost. We had not argued and were on good terms. Some people are just like that. My father hasn't heard from him in 20 years either. Absolutely no reason. They used to get on well.

    Uncaring, Unfeeling,Unforgiving,Unnatural,Unmoved, ,Undesireable,Unhealthy,Ununited,Unpleasant!

  2. Rubbish. as I already pointed out, I had a friend of 30 years went psychotic from too much MJ and another that I "thought" was a real friend of 20 years that turned out to be a backstabber. Not everything is "my" fault.

As you get older you have more and more questions about the actual nature of identity. Hobbes said that unchecked thoughts are mainly madness, and if people knew the vain thoughts that fly through your mind they would know that you were mad. Hume thought that learning to see yourself as a single person is learned behaviour. It's only familiarity that means you know yourself better than you know other people. You'd have to be pretty strange (or unobservant) not to have caught yourself doing something and then later thinking of a good reason why you did it, which is plausible, but which you weren't conscious of at the time. Everyone's weirder than you think they are, and so are you smile.png

If you're interested specifically in the notion of friendship you should read what Aristotle has to say in the Nicomachean Ethics. If you accept his account hardly anyone has any friends. Friends are people who admire one another's good qualities. It's got nothing to do with passing the time, enjoying their company, being useful or anything else.

As you head into the grave you begin to realise that you're on your own, and then you realise that maybe you were never a "you" at all!

    Wow that was deep [emoji106]

    And mildly depressing [emoji17]

Ah, but then once that happens you realise that there isn't a specific you, there is only "thinking going on". You're part of universal thought. You're the universe aware of itself in thought. If you can hold that understanding in your mind a lightsaber strike will pass right through you wai.gif

That's pretty strong you got there!

  3. "paperwork but it makes it easy to do since they do it all and you simply can "go to the beach" while they do the work."

This is a long way from the truth, without your input the Agents can't even get started, they need you to answer all the questions, without you they couldn't even put a name to your application, think about it! and if you can't even fill out your own forms, then you need an Agent,or someone that can!

  4. Well it also says on it "O/A Visa"which I thought needed no explanation, yes I know that from the first Visa, everthing thereafter is an extension!

Not all the O-A visa have that remark, here below one that doesn't

Maybe that one slipped through the net! clearly it's not Thailand Policy to allow Retiries to work! and of course the time frame when new Immigration rules come in play,is at the mercy of Thai Immigration!

Follow this link and you will see many companies are in the market for,O/A Visas commonly known as 1 year retirement visas, which can be extended.

To reiterate my Visa is a non immigrant "O/A" Retirement Visa, extendable year on year, which has stamped across the bottom "EMPLOYMENT PROHIBITED"

  6. On a positive note, compared to other Asian countries I stayed before, Thailand is quite open minded when it comes to foreigners.

Absolutely true. But a forum like this is not the place to come for a realistic perspective on these things.

Short answer: don't like the rules here (or can't figure out ways around them, which there always are), perhaps you'd be happier elsewhere.

There is only one set of rules here in Thailand, the Thai set of rules,if you think you can get around the rules in Thailand,in your favour then you have a lot to learn!

  7. Who the <deleted> would want to invest funds at 2 or (God forbid) 2,4 percent anyway - forget the alleged racism, think about the rational of the investment. You couldn't convince me to fart in bed for a 2 or 2.4% return.

As to buying a condo, get your Missus to buy it at the Thai price of 1.88M.

    Sorted coffee1.gif

So how does it get signed over in his name?

  8. I was having a beer or two at World Trade Center beer garden a few years ago. I ended up with 2 couples from Europe on holiday.

The guys were working together as garbage collectors. They complained on how stupid the Thai was.

Jeeze, I told them that if the Thai would have had the same opportunity to education as they had they might have been flying the "space shuttle" while they would still collect garbage for a living

Well to be fair, there's nothing wrong with collecting garbage to earn a living - its called working for a living.

Not so long back I saw a guy I grew up with sweeping the street in the town market place, I knew he'd recently been out of work and I could see he was trying to avoid me seeing him.

I made a point of walking up to him, shaking his hand, and telling him there is dignity in all work - There is no high or low work - work is never something to be ashamed of.

Absolutely! as my father used to say: all work is honorable!

  9. All depends on your perception. Trouble is, perceptions vary.

The noodle cart occupying three quarters of the pavement near the BTS could be considered convenient if you're hungry and don't have time for a restaurant.

If, on the other hand, you're in a desperate hurry to get somewhere using the BTS, it's a major inconvenience if foot traffic slows to a crawl while everyone tries to get around the obstruction caused by the cart, the punters standing around it and the tables and chairs strewn everywhere.

The rules are there to take other people's quality of life into consideration.

I will take the noodle cart on the sidewalk anyday. Came from Canada never, ever want to live where policing everything and everyone for anything is the common practice. Here we have freedoms in our daily lives lost a long time ago in Nanny states. Not perfect but not over structured and easy.

you might but others might not

You are absolutely right but i am happy Thailand gives us the opportunity to have an alternative. Those who like nanny states stay in them those who like freedoms come here simple. The whole world shouldnot be the same to predictable and boring.

"Thailand gives us the opportunity to have an alternative"

Thailand doesn't give you an alternative, you pay for your own alternative, there is no such thing in Thailand as Government Social help, especially for "Farangs"

  10. NO NO NO....THAILAND DIDNT MAKE THESE PEOPLE GET IN A BOAT AND FLOAT AROUND FOR WEEKS MONTHS AND DIE OF STARVATION AND OTHER UNFORTUNATES

THAILAND OR ANY OTHER COUNTRY HAS NO OBLIGATION TO THESE MISFORTUNATES....

HOWEVER I DO THINK THE UK OWES THESE PEOPLE CITIZENSHIP SINCE THEY WERE THE ONES TO COAX THEM INTO BURMA ALMOST 100 YEARS AGO

THAILAND OR ANY OTHER COUNTRY HAS NO OBLIGATION TO THESE MISFORTUNATES....

Judging by the colossal International help Thailand received during the 2004 Tsunani, I would have thought Thailand owes more in help than any other country!

  11. Considering the huge International help given to Thailand (In particular) and several other parts of SE Asia, during and after the Tsunami 2004, don’t they understand they owe these desperate people at least some help? which should be forthcoming to any human being or living creature? It seems to be a case of short memories and deep pockets!

  12. Ok, but shouldn't one be able to perceive how their words will potentially hurt someone's feelings?

Must admit it does seem harsh but some Thai's are just brutally honest, you're too fat, too skiny etc. Don't think there's any malice meant, it's just they presume you will be aware of their observation. 99% of the time you are aware and they are right.

I wouldn't call it "brutally honest" more like totally insensitive to the feelings of others!

  13. The first time a couple of young men appeared to be letting an old men on the bus first,I looked over both shoulders and I was shocked to see it was me! but at the same time glad they had a good upbringing to carry on a very old tradition!

  14. Ok, but shouldn't one be able to perceive how their words will potentially hurt someone's feelings?

I wonder if they also go around being brutally honest and saying 'blue shirt' when someone wears a blue shirt or do they only do this when it comes to something which will be guaranteed to annoy someone else regardless of where they come from.

I think you know the answer, they do it to annoy people.

It would be their reactions to the same accusations,my guess it would be completely unacceptible, Thai bashing!

  15. As it says on that page, all she needs is her naturalisation certificate and the passport she used to first enter the UK.

I suspect the person who dealt with you doesn't get many applications from naturalised citizens and didn't bother to check!.

Maybe print that page out and take with you in case you have this problem again.

It is not just a question of producing the necessary paperwork, there is a question of a personal interview, with no husband present. The Spouse answers personal questions known to husband and wife, this only takes place on a first Passport! in most cases the British Passport is forwarded within 2 weeks! of a satisfactory interview.

  16. Unfortunately for foreigners to openly own land you will have to change the national anthem as a section of it is rendered variously as saying:

Nation of the people; belonging to the Thais in every respect. Land of Thailand belongs to the Thais. Every inch of Thailand belongs to the Thais.

Many Thai people consider it is their nationalistic duty not to cede the land of Thailand either to foreign nations or to foreigners.

A bit like that nasty spoilt child who won't let others touch his toys but will take the other children's toys

And that's why it's not going to happen, even the big boys don't wan't any Farangs creating a sellers market, that they have to pay competitive rates for, it's their game/market and we are not invited! and never will be!

  17. What exactly do you mean by "come back"?

I am notified of any replies to my post, or any that I have commented on, via my email and can read them there.

Yes, if I need to reply to a reply I must log in to TV to do so,

But many times, input, reaction, or advise is all I want, and get that just fine from my email account, without ever actually going t the original thread again.

If you walked up to someone, asked them for help, or information, they answered you, would you then just ignore them and turn your back and walk away ? No, I would hope not as that would be very ignorant and rude. Why should a forum be any different.

In my opinion its reasonable and good manners to at least acknowledge the replies or response you get to your question, especially if it has helped you in some way.

Some people think it's their god given right to use people and ask for help, and then don't even give them a thank you or kiss my arse! put it down to poor up bringing,a thank you costs nothing!

  18. If Home Secretary Teresa May's efforts to bring Immigration down to 10,000s of thousands, turn out to be 260,000 as has happened now, then there will not be too much to worry about! and she has been given the job of Home Secretary, again in today's reshuffle! One could be tempted to say: that the Conservatives are all about cheap labour coming in,in droves, it keeps the Plebs in their place! and gives the Fat Cats ammunition for whinging about yet more cut backs needed,so they can get more back to work in their wheel chairs. Time to open some more food Banks and Soup kitchens! And don't think there aren't any in your home town back home, believe me it's a growing market! they take food donation in the Supermarkets, the Schools, churches, and anywhere, and under another 5 years of this Government can only get much worse! Bumping the Visa Fees up is also a growing industry too!

  19. DW... The OP asked if there where success stories and it's value in going through this process ! Now the OP knows there is ... I do agree with you on a couple of points it could be and I'm sure has been a quagmire for many and probably, definitely we are in the minority but that wasn't the question... I was told too forget it also but decided to take my chance and that's all I'm saying in my reply my friend.. I'm personally not an American and hadn't had any experience in court proceedings prior but don't know about the other members on this thread.

In honesty there are no success stories so other posters are just making things up for bravado as they've lost money too and saying they've got it back is like the million + baht being in their bank account again rather then that house in Issan on that plot of land that was theirs but never really theirs.

The house is in the wifes name or at best on a 30 year lease,in her name. While some dreamers will tell you I have it in my company name,@ 49% which has never been total control by any stretch of the imagination, and with at least 3 (possibly 6) sleeping Directors having paid sod all into your company,I don't know how you all sleep at night?

  20. Lies & people trying to save face.

Friends telling friends they've won at court is rubbish

To the OP, how much have you lost?

    Let's go from there.

So basing it on bar stool banter in other words

    No

It's based on experience & all lies people tell to make themselves look bigger.

So, how much are we talking? Come on, divulge

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Ah! the losers in Thailand ? we all talk about it, but some will never accept the reality! the the result is: massage the precious Ego and bend the truth, the crap never happened!
