  1. Excuse me. Am I completely stupid. I know this is Thailand, but did I just read that.

" It has the two-fold objective of cutting down on boozers, and raising the revenue from the said people"

So, they are going to make a fortune by taxing the stuff that people can't afford to buy. It does go to show that there are imbiciles in charge of the economy.

They do the same thing in the UK with the same objectives. Then they increase the opening hours and the hours off licences and superstores can sell it! :o

  2. of course, driving around looking for customers will cause some

    traffic congestion, but likely marginal.

    regards,

I sometimes get the impression that most of the people posting comments have never had a positive thought in their life.

Well spotted Mijan and there was an error in my post as it should have read "people posting NEGATIVE comments". It nice to know that people read things properly.

It is a fact of life that some people think postively and others negatively. Therefore it would be great if some creative ideas were made instead of rubbishing everything that is proposed. It's called throwing balls in the air, then assessing constructive criticism and hopefully getting some new ideas. If nobody makes any suggestions then everything will remain unchanged. However, change is not a benefit but an improvement is.

    Hope that clarifies the it.

I'll be checking to see if you make any errors now! :o:D

  3. Toll inner city private car use drastically.. Taxi's and other 'public' can have monthly or no charges.. Simply make the cost of using a car in the areas where there is major congestion problems higher and other forms of transport becomes more appealing..

Use to toll money to build more and better public infrastructure.

Where this is done the people to suffer most are those who rely on customers driving into the city to their shops. London is a good example as there is less traffic and also fewer customers. Stop people using their cars for shopping trips and they go elsewhere. However, park and ride may offer a solution.

  4. of course, driving around looking for customers will cause some

    traffic congestion, but likely marginal.

    regards,

    --dan

Dan I don't know where you live but just stand and look at the number of taxis there are on any of the major roads. A very high percentage and many driving around looking for a fare. From your comment either you don't visit BKK or you must be blind.

The taxi rank outside the WTC works very well and more of the same would be a big benefit.

I sometimes get the impression that most of the people posting comments have never had a positive thought in their life.

  5. my thai wife was/is a qualified english teacher, however, after 9 years in the uk she still cant spell and has no idea whatsoever about grammar lol.

My wife came to England in 1987 from BKK at the age of 33 and her English spelling was excellent although some of her grammar left a bit to be desired. Her spelling was better than many of the people I interviewed to work for my business.

When she was in Thailand she worked for the Water Supply company in BKK and learned her English at school and university along with her maths which was far better than your current crop of school leavers and in many cases graduates in the UK. :o

Like every country the quality of the educational establishments varies wildly so the results are bound to reflect that too. Good schools will always have properly qualified staff producing excellent results regardless of the country. It's probably fair to say that like the UK the quality of the teachers is not up to the level that it was many years ago often due to the dilution of the curriculum and attention span of the students.

  6. It seems to me that since 60 to 80% of the price of gasoline at the pump is government taxes, it should be really simple for the price to come down.

Simply reduce the government taxes on refined petroleum.  If you do not believe this, why are the Brits paying over $6 per gallon, the Americans about $2.5 per gallon and the Saudi's about $.7 per gallon when the per barrel price is the same worldwide.

    Tallthai

Make that $8 an imperial gallon, in the UK!!

    90p a litre

Not the US short measure. :o

Yes about 92.8p/litre that's about 68.7baht/litre (£4.22 for an imperial gallon thats for Regular. Super is about £4.50/gallon). And rising!

  7. The price of a barrel oil is controlled by the financial markets around the world, based on the price for forward orders in the future. It's called futures trading of contracts. All trading works the same when the demand is greater than the supply the price goes up and vice versa. When traders can see the price rising they want to buy 'futures contracts' which forces the price up, then when the price peaks they want to sell to make a profit. When the price falls due to over supply or lack of demand they sell or lose money unless long term traders. That is the principle but they often get it wrong as the price can reverse overnight.

The supply situation is out of the oil companies hands too because of wars or strikes in countries who are major producers, like Nigeria and also South America this year. Furthermore all oil refineries have to have maintenace carried out and there have also been fires too so there are many variables that can happen at the same time.

If you're lucky enough to live in a country like the UK. The government rips you off with over 80% of the pump price being tax so they can waste it on their pet schemes and employing ever more civil servants or giving it away to extremists who they have given residence to and who live off government benefits. Currently the price is in the order of £4.15 (over 300 baht) a gallon, 67 baht/litre and deisel costs even more.

The cost fuel to the airlines is controlled by world prices and now represents about 30% of their operating costs so ticket prices have to go up.

  8. There's a fine line between some of the light-hearted comments I read on these forums and outright narrow-minded racism toward Thais. The (tongue-in-cheek) comments are always mildly amusing to begin with, but they always seem to develop into an 'open season' for less trivial anti-Thai comments. Come on guys, how would you like a bunch of Thais living in your country slagging off the character of your fellow countrymen on public forums. Please try to keep your comments light-hearted (and/or constructive) :o

P.S. I should add that several Thais friends have told me on several occassions to 'beware of the police - they are only after your money', and I've met a couple of Thai policeman (one high-ranking too) so far that have spoken to me and acted with an obvious lack of respect and (IMHO) with dubious intentions. I'm not denying there is some truth in it, but you shouldn't tar them all with the same brush. I've met more polite, courteous honest ones than I have bad ones (although they're usually only manning the speed traps on the petchakasem road!). Hey, the situation's not perfect anywhere in the world! Welcome to Thailand.

    Just my 2 satang,

    --

    Ross

Absolutely, and apart from the inane comments there is a singular lack of respect for the dead, how ever they died. I just hope that none of their relatives and friends read the stupid remarks made by certain people.

    RIP.

  9. "What more than 95 per cent of all suicide terrorist attacks around the world have in common is not religion, but a specific political goal to compel modern democracies to withdraw military forces from the territory that the terrorists view as their homeland or prize greatly."  Robert Pape

What do the three Southern Provinces have that the rest of Thailand wants?

Is there oil or other natural resources down there?

Why not just give them autonomy? Let them form their own country?

There's a LOT of oil right there off-shore..one of the contributing reasons why the Thaksin Government and hopefully each succeeding government will hang onto and not trade-off at any cost. (There's also a LOT of oil in Irag). One wonders!

There isn't any oil in Northern Ireland. Anyway fanatics will always find and excuse of some sort. You will invariably find that religiion is always behind the problem if you dig deep enough.

Whether it is suicide bombing, ethnic cleansing or some other "reason" like in Africa where being from the wrong tribe is a good enough excuse. Atrocities are not carried out for humanitarian, economic or reasons that most of us can consider remotely justified.

  10. This is sickening news.... I'm so tired of hearing about Muslim terrorists blowing people up and killing innocent people--and it's especially sad that it has come to beautiful Thailand.

What's the answer?  Martial law?  Curfews?  More and more clamp-downs?

I know the answer is NOT to give in to their demands--NEVERIf they aren't civilized enough to voice their grievances like civilized people, they won't be civilized (or satisfied) if appeased...

If there is an answer then nobody has found it yet. Whether Northern Ireland, Spain, the Middle East, South East Asia, you name it and nothing stops fanatics. If they are allowed to take over and form sone sort of administration they just kill all their opponents and anybody else who they take a dislike to.

Has anyone else noticed that all of these conflicts involve RELIGION. Who needs it?

  11. If they ever legalize gambling here, betting on completion dates for Thai

infrastructure projects would be a riot.

Talking with other contractors working on the airport, many in different areas.

I would give opening time of July 06, pretty good odds.

Maybe 4 - 1, which I considered extremely good odds for something this big,

    in Thailand

We are already beginning the final stage of the completion of a project such as this.

    Final phase step 1,

Starting to find escape goats, for all of the delays.

Step 2, will proceed into escape goats, for poorly built or unuseable assets, when the estimates for the final bill come in grossly over estimates.

    Step 3

Lastly we will begin to "remove face" through lies and slander from key consulting heads, and then move to the lower management ranks in a systematic fashion.

    Step 4

Worthless and useless Thai politicians patting each other on the back, for working so hard to build this wonderful monument of achievement, and for punishing all those that delayed their airport from opening, and tried to over charge them.

    Step 5

Ex-pat contractors, laughing over beers, at the over inflated service contracts fees they are going to charge for maintance of the new airport they built.

Quote from airport contractor "I don't know why the Thais didn't just build the airport Thai style, measure every structure at Don Muang, multiple the measurements by 3, and then build a much large copy of that airport."

How about the Millenium Dome in London, only a piddling project in comparison?

Massively over budget, late, always run at a loss despite all the politicians blather and promise. Sold for a song by the same crowd of the PM's cronies and then the Minister responsible gets promoted to a Lord!

Maybe the Thais have a lot to learn still.

  12. Do you have the list? What about places with adult venues like Nana Plaza?

nana, soi cowboy and patpong area are left unprotected as possible "honey pot" for terrorists for "recreational" purposes.

Sales of "shish - kebab" and "shawerma" are increased by 15% since last month at the nana area too.

complete list of places is available at Ministry Of Defence and Security on demand. or soon - on TVisa

Wish they would issue gun permits to those who know how to use them, then the terrorists would say "we would attack the westerners in Bangkok but they are all armed” :o

Thus and true, corrupt politicians inspire assassins. Of course they don't want people to have guns. Politicians never trust the people to whom they give reason to shoot them.

"A free people ought not only to be armed and disciplined, but they should have sufficient arms and ammunition to maintain a status of independence from any who might attempt to abuse them, which would include their own government." GW :D

I can only think you must come from some lawless country that allows people to carry guns willy nilly because the ruling poiticians are gun crazy too. You have one guess as to which country I'm referring to.

  13. Hasn't the euro and pound weakened significantly against the baht in the last few months?

I just remember thinking that all the europeans were getting more for their vacations than I was with my american dollars.

THe baht to US dollar change hasn't been real exaggerated in the last year.  I'd say about steady.  I mean, I don't "feel" any big change.

The short answer is YES! Sterling has depricated against the $US a lot since getting near to $2 it is now less than 1.90. On Friday 1st July I got over 74 baht, today, one week later it is down to 72.68 baht for travellers cheques, altough the bomb blasts in London yesterday probably had some effect.

  14. This is why I love living in Isaan you dont have to put up with wining falang bull shit. Both my bikes are loud and no one complains. The head copper even told me I could ride my CR 250 any where I wanted dirt and road just slow it down when in the villige. What can I say bangkok sux.  :D

Really so where do you live I have a V8 with a full house mouse motor in a

T-Bucket and some megahones I will be sure to come by your house late late late at night and cut a few brodies, now do you think that would bother you :o

If not then you sure have thick skin :D

Maybe you should have just said 'thick' Capt Canada42. Anyone with half a brain and even the village idiot knows that loud noise seriously damages your hearing. Been there done that with military aircraft.

Cars are limited to 85dB and bikes 95dB. 10dB doesn't sound much but the scale is logarithmic, so it is 10 times louder! YES YOU DID READ IT RIGHT TEN TIMES LOUDER every 10 dB.

Try looking at this website all you noisy idiots. www.zyra.org.uk/db.htm

  15. Thailland means the "Land of Thai people".

it actually means Free land or land of the free due to it never having been colonised by a foreign power.

Like **** it does. Find me a credible source for "Thai" meaning "free", without refering to that bizarre factoid. Sometimes I think they just invent bits of historical translation so they can have a laugh at foreigners.

"Thai" is the same word as the linguistic language group, "Tai". It's spelt with a H for the same reason as "Thanon" and every other Thai word beginning with a "proper" T sound. It's correctly pronounced "Tailand". It's a spelling mistake. Another good reason to change it back to Siam...

    [/end rant]

My wife and many of her friends always told me Thailand meant 'Land of the Free'. But there again I suppose Thai's wouldn't know that and farang always know better! Also it was changed from 'Siam' which meant 'gold' because it was more appropriate.

  16. How are they going to trace anything.Thailands phone system is still in the STONE AGE.Ever tried to make a call from the U.S. most the time one can not even got thru.

No, but call a mobile in Thailand from England every day and frequently get connection problems, either not connecting or my gf not being able to hear me but I can always here her.

    Anyone else have similar problems?

  17. thanks all for the ideas.  i like Terdsak's Ford Escape option, good horsepower for the price, and also practical for Bkk roads.  Although i am a bit concerned about the Ford quality.  an ex-girlfriend drove a Ford and i remember it starting to produce plastic rattling noises after only a few months.

i'm inclined to avoid the old japanese supercars suggested by some as they are likely to have been thrashed to bits and you just cant be sure of all the aftermarket stuff beneath the bonet....but then if i were in my mid 20s maybe i might be tempted.

i've also been looking at second hand beemers, even though prices come in on the high end of the budget, they are well built and do tend to keep their value well after the initial depreciation.

    any other suggestions?

Depends on whether a standard or modified car is your thing and from which decade? Can't beat Japanse cars for reliability and if it's modified then just make sure all the bits are from the manufacturers associated or approved tuning company. TRD for Toyota, Ralliart for Mitsubishi, Prodrive for Subura, etc.

I have run various modified Toyota road and rally cars for 30 years and the cost for replacement parts has been negligible.

If you want a classic car then the Datsun 240Z will always attract attention but not so sure about the aircon situation. For a modern car then I'd go for a Lexus IS200 every time as they can easily be tuned to 200bhp and are civilised with it as well. TRD bodykit parts are also available. They don't take up much space either so easy to drive in BKK.

  18. Ha, hahahahahahahahahahahahaha!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  First Class my foot.  Thailand still has to graduate to third class and then to second class.  I would say Bangkok and Thailand are about a good 50 years behind the grand scale.  In order to be First Class they have to match USA ---> style for style, living for living, earnings for earnings, economy for economy, construction for construction, infrustructure for infrustructure and military for military, and polictics for polictics.

See my point.  Until that day that they can match the USA Standards completely, then they will be first class. :D  :o  :D

    Daveyo

Sounds like comments from a smug yank!

Maybe if Thailand wants all the negatives of the USA and the budget deficit to go along with it then it will do all those things. However, I for one hope it never even thinks about attempting such an idiotic idea. There is certainly no attraction for me to go and live in the 'b......t' capital of the world. That raises the question if DaveYo is so impressed why is he living in Thailand and not the US?

  19. Roi-et is growing slowly, Lotus is here, Makro opened 2 months ago, lots of farang food :o . They have some nice falang style estates like Cityrom. The falang community usually meets as from 6 pm at White Elephant Restaurant. Excellent european food :D and snooker, nice bar. Situated 50 meter from Roi et City hotel (4 star). Petcharad Garden hotel has very friendly service and a swimming pool with Restaurant and lots of shady trees. Roi et 101 Restaurant is 100 m from Petcharad with very good Thai food, 400 places :D and live music. Around there you can find cosy garden restaurants , dicsos , fancy styled bars with live music

The falang community in the Provence Roi et is 300 living here and 1200 married to Thai woman. Mainly English, German, Swiss. About 500 falang styled houses build here in this provence mainly in Roi et, Baan Chaan, Selaphum. Phanomprai. The governor here cares for the falang community and invites every year about 50 falang to take part in the Bun Pawen activities.

Very interested in your comments about houses. I have been coming here for a while now and will be moving here in about 2 months as my gf is a dentist and does not want to give up her job.

Have spent most of the time since Songkran looking at houses. However, the impression is that they are badly designed, often using cheap materials, constructed by a cowboy builder and within touching distance of the next property. I guess building regulations do not apply here! If you want me to be more specific just let me know. Consequently we have decided to rent a house and get a double brick one built to our design when we can locate a peice of land that has been properly surveyed.

Any information on a good builder will be appreciated and a legal guy who knows the ropes and can provide the paperwork in English.

Have also looked at houses in KKC but found them to be the worst while Maha Sarakham is abut the same as far as I can see.

Went to the White Elephant for dinner last year (Thai) but not impressed maybe they are better at European food, the guy there is German.

Stay in the Petcharat Garden Hotel when here but get bored with exactly the same food every morning for breakfast. It has very cheap room rate unlike the the Roi Et City Hotel and a pool and is only 20 baht by Tuk Tuk to the bank in the city.

Found the people are very friendly and can always pop into BKK by PB Air if KKC loses its appeal for shopping.
