Good thing they nailed him but what about the footer in the photo letting us know who is in the photo. What are Farang doing there Are they in the special investigative branch

Just a poor job of reporting but then again typical for a Thai

Likely embassy/consulate representatives from some of the countries the 1,053 forged passport represent...................wink.png

Agreed and some people are unable to read an article to the end and absorb the information that is clearly stated.

  2. Another waste of life. very sad.

A bus "parked" on the fast lane at 2am in the night.

    Recipe for desaster.

Have you ever seen flashlights, breakdown triangles. reflectors in this country?

    Very rare if at all!

    Its a madhouse.

I never drive in the night overland except for an emergency.

Sporadic unavoidable 16 km home rides from the district town in the dark is just enough for me.

I stare to the dark hoping to see "the unlighted object" before I hit it.

Yes, there is a large red triangle in the boot of my car that I brought from England! However, on the one occasion I had cause to use it, due to a flat tyre a Thai driver who had to avoid it became irate, waving his fist and bad mouthing as he drove past!

  3. Luckily I have used Amnat Charoen for a few years now and they are excellent and I go on my own. Have also used Pattya, Mukdahan and Korat the last two proved problematical. No stupid questions or demanding or providing new documents. However, I always get my wife to call a mobile number and check for changes, to be on the safe side.

  4. The correct link is:

    https://www.gov.uk/notarial-and-documentary-services-guide-for-thailand

And after you've made your appointment, make sure you have a fat wallet ready for the fees.

Your time with someone working for HM Govt will be billed at 130 quid an hour!!! KERRRRCHING!!

Yes - 'rip off Britain' extends way beyond the country.

A simple proof of address for a driving license where you show them a bank statement and they sign a form (which you have to fill out yourself) costs 60 quid. 10 minutes for them at most. If you want two copies (eg for a car and bike license) that's 120 quid for 15 minutes.

Reminds me why I am here.

Why you would go to the inconvenience and cost of getting proof of address for a drivers license beggars belief, not to mention the cost. Your nearest police station will do it and many for FREE!

  5. So things are going from bad to worse....or is that worse to incredibly useless ? If this is the same system now that they use at VFS in Trendy House the appointment system is a total waste of time. You get an appointment, turn up, then you're given a number and told to wait until it is called. Our appointment a couple of weeks ago was one hour late and the office had only been open one and a half hours -- such efficiency. Two days for the paperwork to get from the embassy back to VFS, a distance that can be measured in metres rather than kilometres. Over 24 hours to get the paperwork to a courier service -- AKA the Thailand Pot Office which in my view is not a courier service and we know how unreliable the post office is, then 2 days to travel 400kms to our sorting office. And if that wasn't bad enough, cost has already been mentioned. You cannot pay in sterling, it has to be US dollars. Why, this is the BRITISH embassy and I am British. You want to talk to them on the phone, well please have your credit card ready and expect to pay 1.27 ( could be 1.37 ) pounds per minute AFTER you have already forked out for a visa which you are not guaranteed to get.

If you think this is a rant then I've got it right !

Obviously you live in an area where the posty is unreliable as so far over numerous years the PO here has been pretty reliable with my mail and no worse than that in the UK.

  6. top 4 thing you buy and use once

    4. Ice cream maker

    3. Exercise equipment

    2. Toasted Sandwich Maker

    1. Bread Machine

Different strokes for different folks, I guess.

Back in the day I had a one quart hand-cranked ice cream maker. I used it at least once a week during the summer months. Had it for years, and made a lot of good, fresh ice cream.

I also had a bread machine for years, and used it often before moving the Thailand. After a few years, I bought one here for 1,000 baht from a fellow leaving for home. He threw in about 50 pkgs of yeast. I use it at least once or twice a month.

I never bought exercise equipment. I figure I get enough exercise just pushing my luck. And I never cared for toasted sandwiches so I never bought one of those. But I wish I still had that ice cream maker. One quart was just the right amount for me and mine. And I'll certainly continue to use the bread machine. A delightful way to get freshly made bread!

Still have my Kenwood toasted sandwich maker that was bought maybe 20-30 years ago or more. My wife likes toasted sandwiches too so it gets used quite often. Think I'll have one tomorrow! Also have a bread maker but as we go to the gym weekdays an exercise machine it not needed.

  7. i can make a plain loaf of bread in my bread machine for 15-16 baht (not counting the cost of the machine & electricity). however i only use it for the kneading/proofing/rises--it has way more patience than i do. i finish final shaping/kneading myself & then into the oven. i only ever use the full knead/bake cycle for bread that no one will ever see (like stuffing, etc.), the severin model i have (also verasu) leaves an ugly anus in the bread loaf. i also use it for pizza, rolls, & baguettes.

Remove the paddle just before the baking starts. On my machine that is 1 hour 50 minutes to the end or if you prefer 1 hour 35 minutes after kick off! I've been baking bread sine the 90's when my local baker shut up shop in England. My breadmaker cost £25 in Asda and I replaced it a few years ago with the same model, on eBay. Put it in my suitcase to get it back here.

There are 7 ingredients in my bread, water, bread flour, butter, salt, sugar, milk powder and yeast. Cost is about <60 baht for a 2 lb loaf and baking time 3 hrs 25 mins. There are numerous programmes including for making jam that I've never tried.

Surprising how many people on TVF bake bread. How about a survey?

  8. In 1997 only Asia and overseas market still strong but today due to lower fuel price main oil export countries like Russia and Malaysia the value of thier money are drop nearly 50%, China GDP only 7% where few years back 9%.

They are few reasons behind fuel price drop saction against Russia due to Ukaraine issue and stop IS funding which main income is from oil, the effect now feel the pitch of it around the world.

One of the main reasons for the drop in oil prices is the massive fracking iin the US that has meant they are almost self sufficient in oil production. Previously they were a major importer on top of which Saudi Arabia refuses to raise the price/barrel.

  9. Probably the best way to transfer money to Bangkok Bank in Thailand is to transfer your funds to the Sydney branch and they will make a direct payment to the CM branch for you. It cuts out the middle man who will also charge a handling fee, like HSBC. They have been known to change currency into baht despite the funds being sent to a FCD (Foreign Currency) account.

  10. There are a number or issues involved.

    1. The whole thing needs a massive rethink and the objectives rethought. Starting from scratch would be the best solution!

    2. Allowing countries to join who did not meet the criteria, of which one of the original members, if I remember correctly France did not strictly meet the criteria either is crass.

    3. There should be an exit clause that makes states that fail to meet the financial criteria, be ejected.

    4. One of the two parliaments should be scrapped, Strasbourg to be precise.

    5. Expensive trips to far away exotic places for scores of people who have no good reason to be there should be scrapped.

    6. During the whole life of the 'institution', call it what you will, they have never produced a set of audited accounts and never will. They have blocked every attempt by auditors to have them comply. Therefore my view is scrap the whole unethical and totally corrupt 'organisation'. If it was a company you can well imagine exactly what would happen!

As long as there are 27 parliaments on top of all the central bureaucracy running the show it's an invitation to fail.

Bearing in mind that the populations of various countries have become disillusioned with the whole corrupt, inefficient and over controlling unelected bureaucrats is it any wonder the dire straights it is in. Furthermore the turmoil will continue to repeat itself.

Best separate the Euro issue from the EU issue.

Yes there are many issues that need fixing including making it more Democratic, forcing proper audited accounts and ditching Strasbourg.

But overall the benefits hugely outweigh the disadvantages. Pity there isn't a more assertive press - maybe the good news doesn't sell papers. The Economist is certainly pro for. What it's worth!

Did you know that Greek state pension is 111% of national average wage compared to 43% for UK?

I thought it was a moving target, upwards, as the average wage declines due to increasing unemployment and consequently a lack of wage increases.

  11. So in the end, did his actions cause his wife to gain back her lost face, or compound her shame further?

This story reminds me of late 80's U2 when rumors were going round that one of the was going to get the boot because he wasn't religious enough. Turns out it was because he was boning Naomi Campbell and the others were jealous.

In this case Somyot the billionaire police chief wants somebody else to be the Swampy chief for reasons presumably related to Baht, and the plane delay is an easily swallow-able load for the public.

Evidence please. I see nothing in your post to support the assertion.

Thai driving licence, has passport number on it.

Driving licence issued on January 10th.

Received new passport on January 12th, new number. Possible 5 years of conflicting data.................wink.png

Unless you know, or remember, its not always so clear cut.

Go change the Drivers Licence it costs 155 baht.

  14. They know where you are and what your doing everything these days is on computers every year you have to fill out a form stating who resides with you and if you falsify then it's lock up time and when they decide to confront you it's pay back time it's only because of cutbacks in the uk they haven't the man power to look into it yet but they will my son at 24 spent a week over the six months in Thailand and he became a non uk citizen. I think all the expats should lobby the government not to cut our pensions just because we want to live somewhere else we paid for them so we should benefit if you go to live in the USA You still get the increases but Australia and New Zealand you don't yet these are part of the commonwealth

The question about freezing the State Pension has been all the way to the European Court and the UK government won, so no chance.

  15. Absolutely agree with above comments - say nothing.

I made the big mistake of being open and honest ten years ago and I'm still paying for it!

NO entitlement to ANY benefits whatsoever - no free NHS health care, nothing in return for all the tax I still pay, and my state pension frozen.

I even had to battle with my bank to get my credit card renewed, in spite of being a solid and reliable customer for 50 years!

Thankfully, I can use my brother's address in UK and just updated my UK driving licence which I am not supposed to have either!

Hindsight has 20/20 vision as they say!

I still pay UK tax too, however, my house is rented out so HMRC were informed by the Leasing Agency.

You can still get NHS healthcare if you have an address in the UK and they must treat you now regardless, since the regulations changed.

Get my debit and cash cards changed with no problems.

Why do you need a UK driving license? You can drive in England for 1 year on a 5 year Thai Drivers license providing it is valid for at least 1 year on entry.

If you're living in LoS what benefits did you expect to get other than an increase in your State Pension?

  16. Depends on your circumstances. If you have a house in the UK that will be rented out then HMRC will want some tax, 20% at source unless you complete a form so that it is paid at year end. It's unlikely that you will personally be looking after the property find and interviewing prospective tenants, collecting the rent and arranging for the maintenance, etc. etc. There is also the question of notifying private pension providers as you will not be living at your present address and if selling your property where will all your mail be redirected to, like P60's? Not everything can be done online. Eventually the State Pension scheme will want you to fill in a form, about a year before it is due to start.

There are of course other considerations like a Will if you have any dependants, subject to your financial circumstances. If they inherit a substantial amount then failing to inform the HMRC could prove expensive as they have world-wide rights to collect tax on your estate.

Just a few thoughts to be going on with.

  17. Non-profit organizations should be set up as foundations. It doesn't appear that this organization was, or had applied to be, a foundation. Therefore, the authorities would see this as a business and I expect the revenue department would want audited accounts and tax paid on minimum salaries for the foreigners. Immigration would want to see non-immigrant B visas for foreign staff and labour would expect to see work permits. My suspicion is that they thought they were exempt from these rules and regulations.

No foreigners engaged in the business.

Strange then that Swedish Susanna Asklöf said "After almost 3 years building up F.A.B and putting in 110 % effort, I regret to inform you that I can no longer keep up with the demands of the job..."

If you read the story properly then you will see she was born in THAILAND and Sweden was her adopted country.

  18. It is not just motorbikes, the myth persists with pick-up trucks too.

The confusion may arise as there are active cooling systems in operation such as pumps and fans operating when the engine is running (and sometimes when the engine is off but the key is in the ignition). However the overall entropic (Is that the right term?) situation would be better served by simply turning the engine off.

In days gone by, there were other theories about revving the engine or idling the engine before turning it off but I am confident it is not a necessity.

On a connected point, take a bus or taxi in Burma and at every garage and stop the driver will cool the brakes by sloshing water over them. Can't hurt but again a hangover from yesteryear.

Some of you may remember that a long time ago when you engaged the handbrake on a hill that once they cooled down it required a lot of effort to release it as the drums had contracted onto the brake shoes. If you tried throwing cold water over disc brakes then there was a good chance the discs would crack!
