  1. I've gone to the end of the internet and back to learn the most nutritionally dense plant foods effective in preventing chronic diseases and I stick with whole unprocessed plant foods. I like Dr. Greger's site best for presenting an abundance of the latest research on the effectiveness of certain foods in preventing cancer, heart disease, etc. http://nutritionfacts.org/

The problem with vitamins, supplements and meds is you may not be getting the real deal and would not know until you get sick, etc.

  2. Problems with many quick weight loss diets out there as documented here

I find the Organic Vegan diet is best for me but may be difficult to find in Thailand:

No meat of any kind including fish, chicken, beef, lamb, or anything else with a face with a face that screams or wiggles in preparation for people consumption. No transfats and minimize and limit cooking oil to virgin olive oil and organic coconut oil.

I eat healthy foods like garlic, green onions, yellow onions, organic kale, organic brocolli, organic spinach, mushrooms, cilantro, brussel sprouts, cauliflower, red or purple cabbage, ginger, organic tofu, brown rice, beans (especially red, pinto, garbanzo and black), chickpeas, turmeric, blueberries, cranberries, walnuts, pecans, pistachios, flaxseeds, chiaseeds, quinoa, old fashioned oats, organic apples, organic strawberries, Indian gooseberry, lemons, limes, oranges, pomegranate, nutritional yeast, mangos, papayas, pineapples, carrots, tomatoes, sweet potatoes, avocadoes, kiwis, hibiscus tea, etc.

Have cut out most wheat and corn products to avoid glutten and genetically modified organisms so prevelantly sold in US supermarkets.

Have lost about 50 pounds and want to shed another 20 but have plateaued. Still need to exercise as lifting weights about 30 minutes/ week and some weekly yard work is not enough.

  3. Did you mean like US FDA approved products like MSG (Hydrolized protein tenderier) antibiotic laden meat, salmonnella infested eggs, growth hormone laden artery clogging dairy (especially cheese), salmonella infested chicken or mercury tainted fish (especially the fish in Thailand rivers that also give you liver cancer). Well, US FDA says we are responsible for cooking out all the bacteria, etc. they let slide. Sooooo..... go organic Vegan with proper cooking (no aluminum pans, please) to protect your health.

  4. Had a problem like that years ago and I had to use their or windows software to stop the connection to that usb port with flash drive & "safely remove the hardware" or I would get that message. It may offer to stop several drives and I just select the one that identifies my USB flash memory stick and click on that one and wait for the message that "it is now safe to remove the drive" and then pull out the memory stick. I think all I did was go through that process and I again got access to the flash drive but its been a long time ago and I always stop the USB flash drive now first with the icon that has a green arrow in the bottom right hand corner of the computer screen that you may have to move the cursor to hover over to show the hidden icon.

  5. Sometimes people think they are cleaning up their diet by just ceasing to eat highly refined carbohydrates, (sugar & flour foods), and eating vegetables like bananas, lettuce, cucumbers, peaches, etc. during the day but actually they are not getting near the antioxidants needed if they deplete their antioxidant store in the body by eating some meat or having a little stress in their lives as Dr Greger discusses here.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rZQf-9rV9XM

Agree that quality of food is essential and to prevent diseases like diabetes, cancer, etc. I have done this by cutting out the highly refined carbs & other processed foods while adding fiber and high antioxidant foods in the diet like kale, spinach, broccoli, beans (kidney, pinto, little red) plus spices with High ORAC values like cloves, cinnamon, oregano & turmeric and now am watching the glycemic load which Dr. Greger doesn't seem to focus much on.

Also I have started the intermittent fasting techniques by delaying breakfast and cutting evening snacks previously discussed and have started to drop more weight, about 50 pounds year to date.

  6. Dr. Jason Fung just posted a new video discussing the results of treating diabetics with a dietary regiment primarily intermittent fasting, reducing/eliminate refined carbohydrates and polyunsaturated vegetable oils (corn, sunflower, etc.) in order to reduce one's insulin which reverses diabetes enough to get off of insulin (like 140 units of insulin a day) and then meds and stops diabetes from killing one's eyes, heart, kidneys, etc. He says high sugars are a symptom of the disease but one needs to treat the root cause of the disease, high insulin levels.

  7. I found a very interesting lecture in 6 parts which deals with food, health, over weight and Diabetes.

Everything is caused by high Insulin levels.

He claims that Diabetes can be reversed. Very interesting!

Well worth the time to watch.

Its certainly thought provoking. I am through 3 parts now and thought he was recommending Atkins diet for awhile but I guess he's presenting a lot of studies for background information and later refuting some. That will be clearer to me after finishing part 6. I like the concept of intermittent fasting by no snacking and limiting 3 meals per day to an eating window of 8 to 10 hours within a 24 hour period to prevent insulin resistance. I have heard about intermittent fasting from Dr. Mercola. Also found the part on high Cortisol causing weight gain to be interesting and that the different ways to reduce cortisol like active relaxation or meditation, massage, Yoga, etc

He mentioned sleep deprivation also contributes to a tripling of the rate of impaired fasting glucose levels but I didn't see references to specific supporting studies.

For me avoiding diabetes, related diseases and meds is the end game but for those who have it whether it can be reversed or controlled, the discussion here is all useful information.

He also mentioned vinegar to reduce insulin response spikes, lower glucose levels to blunt the effect of other things like bread, etc. and it makes you feel more full. Vinegar was brought up here previously.

Thanks for posting the link to this video, its long but I am learning some from it and am not sure I agree with some of it.

  8. Anyone can the read the numerous peer-reviewed scientific studies given by Dr. Greger in his video, its not nonsense. For me, I read the Talmadge article and find it unsupported with valid scientific evidence. Believe an egg industry spokesperson if you choose, up to you. I'm not eating anything that pops out of a chicken's rear end.

  9. Interesting article and video on Dr. Mercola today about the health benefits of supplementing with an appropriate form of magnesium to keep blood pressure and cholesterol under control, etc. I plan to try some magnesium next time I get to a health food store to buy some but am not sure if the L-threonate is any better than say the sulfate form or just hyped.

  10. Interesting Prbkk about pineapple imact on blood sugar. I will probably reduce my intake of pineapple and replace some with other fruits higher on the phytonutrient scale with lower sugar content like organic apples, blackberries, etc. I guess vegetables are best but I think I need some fruit too for a more complete range of phytonutrients and am not diabetic.

    That's great, decreasing hemoblobin A1c from 13 to 5.

I heard that cutting out the macronutrients like meat, eggs, dairy and oils and focusing more on eating the micronutrients from vegetables and fruits would cut my weight & BMI and my body in turn would reduce cholesterol to cut the risk of diabetes, heart disease, etc. while the increased phytonutrients would reduce the risk of cancer & improve overall health & immunity. I think I need to pay attention to micronutrients per calorie. I never learned any of this before hearing this emphasized by a variety of doctors on youtube videos.

  11. I ate a lot of pineapple during the time my Hemoglobin A1c level dropped from 5.5 to 5.2 clearly away from prediabetic. Jeff Novick discusses pineapple and some other foods demonstrating that its one of the foods that is good for you with a high water content, high fiber, high phytonutrients, and low calories per volume of food which satisfies hunger. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X6ogG1wEcXo

  12. Broccoli and other cruciferous vegetables like cauliflower, Brussel sprouts, kale, cabbage, mustard greens, and bok choy have the phytochemicals that are the key to helping our intestines to form a physical barrier to defend the body by locking out pathogens and sustain our immunity. Just need to make sure the veggies eaten are organic (no pesticides) or a part of the clean 15 vegetables that do not allow pesticides to penetrate beyond the outer layer of the veggie so you can peel the pesticide layer away where you are unsure if it contains pesticides.

Treating the cause of disease to avoid the disease, medicines, surgeries, doctors, hospitals, etc. is far easier than the disease but you won't hear that from drug company advertising, etc.

  14. Thanks for the comments. On a Vegan diet I must supplement with sub-lingual B12. Pesticides in foods are a problem so I try to buy organic for the Dirty Dozen veggies or just use the clean fifteen. http://www.ewg.org/foodnews/summary.php Pesticides and antibiotics are concentrated in meats here in the US and more so in meat fat including chicken skin and thighs so a Vegan diet solves that problem.

  15. No meat (that includes fish and chicken), no dairy (especially cheese), no eggs, no oil (occasionally olive & coconut), in short go Vegan is what I have done for a few months now with little to no exercise (I need to work on that). Dropped 40 pounds, cut BMI to 27.6 and median blood pressure readings to 108/73, pulse 50. Total cholesterol is now 170, triglycerides 103, HDL 45, calc LDL 104, Hemoglobin AIc 5.2. No blood pressure pills but doc still has me on Pravastatin Sodium 10 mg (now pill splitting my former dosage of 20 mg) for cholesterol which I hope to get off of eventually. My inspiration is from doctors who take time to give guidance on youtube channels such as (can also search their names and get a few more hits)

  16. Sugar in drinks is a cause and the consumption of meat, eggs and dairy products:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yKZ2ZqBYlrI

Getting back to vegetarian food consumption and drinking water or treats like unsweatened hibiscus tea is a cure.

Diabetes and other western conditions are in the news now in Asia as prosperity and corporate junk food replaces good old fashioned whole unprocessed plant foods Asians have eaten for years. There is plenty of youtube video content in English on the issue but healthy eating needs to be translated to Thai and promoted in public service messages on TV and in schools as much as the corporate junk food is.

  17. A new privilege of Americans is to choose and pay for health insurance at the following rates (unless you can prove up employer coverage, etc.) for your age group in addition to all the U.S., state, city, county, mass transit and other taxing authority taxes.

    http://aspe.hhs.gov/health/reports/2013/MarketplacePremiums/datasheet_home.cfm

Gets expensive the older you get especially for those without medicare coverage or employee/retiree health plans. On top of the high cost of insurance, there are deductibles, copays, weasels working for the insurance companies that slow pay, and try to find every trick in the book to deny payment and then pay their CEOs (like United Health Care) $100+ million per year plus mega million retirement payoffs.

Its no wonder more Americans have moved or are considering alternatives like Costa Rica, etc.
