  1. Well here's one for a start,

imagine having to work with someone who makes ten times more than you do? Don't take it personal.

While they may think I'm in possession of more money than they individually have, my salary is the lowest in the office. And they all know it. But I provide a service they can't, so I'm there...

Anyway, I found a great solution: guilt. If you can find a way to make people like this feel guilty, they will usually come around. B/c deep down, most Thais are generally good hearted people. I know they just get a little carried away with the jokes. And they probably don't realize I'm hearing the same variety of jokes from almost everyone there.

Not just Thais. Filipinos I've worked with resented me because I made more money than them.

  2. Be careful not to exchange any more Baht for Kip than you will spend.

You can not exchange Kip for baht when you leave.

The above mentioned ins't correct. You can certainly change KIP into BAHT before leving Laos! Once in Thailand however you can't and will have to wait to return.

Again there's bad information being circulated on this site.

Tis true. I changed my kip for Baht at the airport on the way out.

  3. Why? Druggie scum gotta pay the price.

You are sick. What if they were your kids???

Hopefully my kid wouldn't be a drug trafficking scum. Hopefully some drug trafficking scum won't play a part in him being an addict. If my son did it and knew the rules, I'd be sad that I didn't raise him to know right from wrong….but I'd hope he'd realise he <deleted> up at the end of the day

  4. That's good. But presumably to do this you had to get all the required approvals from Laos and pay the required "fees"?

Nah….got married in HK. Then went to the Lao consulate with marriage cert which they translated into Lao language (showed police report, birth cert, single status) and they stamped it. Wife took cert back to Lao and they stamped it. Done.

How easy was it for your wife to get her 'single status' (by which I assume you mean the Affirmation to Marry) from the Lao Authorities? If we could get this without having to go through all the Lao bureaucracy we'd marry in Thailand!

She tells me it was pretty easy. The single certificate was called a 'bai daeng sot'. Police report was easy. Biggest headache was changing her place of residence from Borikhamxay to Vientiane. Once she did that, getting the documents was easy.

  5. Because Lao women need approval from the Lao authorities to marry foreigners.

I go married in HK. It was recognized in Laos by the MOFA.

  6. If we do get married, which I want to for the sake of my son, we will probably do so in my country (UK) or somewhere like Hong Kong or Singapore. Obviously the marriage will not be recognised in Laos, but it will be in Thailand for visa/extension purposes.

Why won't it be recognised in Laos?

  7. get more police on the roads anyone found to be intoxicated take them off the road incarcerate them till they sober up that should keep the figures down .

But then they'd be far less police on the roads.

Was once playing Songkran a few clicks out of Khon Kaen. People were putting water on the police who were sipping whiskey and quite enjoying it (except for the big captain). Two drunk cops then got in their car and started to drive away and speaking over their loudspeaker warning people not to drink and drive.
