  1. Tattoos are like bumper stickers — the main differences are bumper stickers on your car can be easily taken off. Having said that now lets think about something else… If you had a really good car, say a high-end BMW, or Rolls Royce, would you lower its value by slapping stupid bumper stickers all over its rear end? I think not. I, being the somewhat silent judgmental sort of person I admit to being, when I meet someone that sounds smart, looks and dresses smartly, then I realize they have a bunch of tattoos — sorry, but I instantly deduct 10 or 12 points from their perceived IQ. (Now let the haters rear their heads...)

So people who don't agree with you are "haters" ?

Minus 50 IQ point for you ! biggrin.png

JohnnyJazz, I don't recall ever saying or implying anyone needs to agree with me. I was simply stating my thoughts on tattoos in general.

  3. With Aung San Suu Kyi’s political party apparently planning to share leadership with the military in Myanmar soon, how about dusting off your crystal ball and predicting what the expat community might look like there in say 5 or 10 years? Bangkok Bank already has commercial banking established in Myanmar.

  4. Over the years I have used a number of e-mail clients and addresses. Once I had to abandon one e-mail address because I could not stop those “You have won 5 million dollar letters … “ all I had to do was send the Nigerian a shipping fee or some other ridiculous additional money to them. I would receive dozens of those scam letters each week. I was convinced my email was noted on a sticky note stuck to every scam artist computer in Nigeria and there must be thousands of them.

  5. I have a 27 inch Retina iMac. However, I was not suggesting everyone go out and get that one. It's too expensive for a casual user. Mac's are practically immune to virus attacks. You can get a simple MacMini box, and use it with any stand-alone monitor, PC keyboard, USB (PC) Mouse, etc. Cost will be about the same as the low-end PC's which seem to be built to fail. Most professional Mac users never load any anti-virus junk on their systems as they are not needed.

  6. You could have it stuffed and mounted like Roy Rogers did with his horse but you would still have major trouble with customs. Yes, that is a most disgusting answer, sorry. Perhaps the more relevant question is how much money are you willing to pour into the project? A quarantine is required once any animal arrives from outside the USA. Not positive but I am reasonably sure that quarantine takes place at the customs facility where the airplane arrives from overseas — not in your home town. Good luck with your solution.

  7. I think if I had to do it over again I would just get the 4gb version from Apple. When this sucker "goes to sleep" it drops into a "coma".

Bringing it out of sleep mode is quick but if I check mail immediately or try to go the internet it needs a few more seconds to "catch up". It takes a few more seconds for the CPU to read and validate the massive chunk of RAM and also check the 1TB hard drive or something. Frankly I'm not doing anything that would come close to needing 8gb of RAM. Heck Photoshop can't see that much RAM and I work in photoshop most of the time.

The computer doesn't verify the RAM when it comes out from sleep, so whatever is causing your delays, that's not it.

The HDD might take a moment to start up but shouldn't be noticeable.

Other ideas on the slowness on wake:

    - Are you connected to the internet wirelessly? Then the WiFi might take a while to re-connect. In my experience how fast this is depends on your router. WiFi as a technology kind of sucks, there seem to be many things that can go wrong. You can check connectivity on the WiFi status symbol in the menu bar.

    - Do you have an external HDD connected? Those sometimes take forever to re-appear. Depends on the external HDD - some of mine appear and eject instantly, others take 5 to 10 seconds (seemingly forever).

With RAM my recommendation is always this: Keep the original Apple RAM. Buy RAM from a 3rd party where it's way cheaper. RAM can be finicky - I had major issues with OS X 10.6 - and it turned out my 3rd party RAM was to blame, even though it worked perfectly in 10.5. Swapped the original back in, and all was good. Then I bought some other 3rd party RAM which is also fine with 10.6.

Nikster, thanks for the guidance. I isolated the problem to the Apple Airport Extreme setup. It was taking 5 or 6 seconds to settle in to a good connection. It's fixed now... My stool softener is working and all is well with the world. Thanks again.

  8. Why don't you just do the comparison yourself? Go here and configure as you please, free shipping to anywhere in Thailand:

    http://store.apple.c...?mco=OTY2ODExMQ

Looks like the mini has a dual voltage power adapter so no issues with the different voltages. Therefore it doesn't really matter whether you buy it here or there.

BTW the price you have looks good, I take it that's from a 3rd party retailer? Apple official charges $600 base price, and $300 for the 8GB alone, and no 1TB option on the base model either.... so - yeah just buy it over there! There are no "deals" from 3rd party Mac dealers in Thailand...

Here you can get the base model from Apple for 20k baht. Add 8GB for BHT 2,000 at any shop. A 1TB HDD will be... not sure but at least 3,000 if not more. So what you get there looks like a good deal.

Nikster, Yes, I got the mac min from a third party off eBay, still selling the unit as "New". They open the box, switch out the hard drive and memory, and repackage. (Still eligible for warranty, etc.).

  9. OP, your first mistake was purchasing a HP Scanner but we don't need to go there. Good luck.

Yes indeed. Which scanner would you recommend for a Mac user?

The Epson scanners I looked at didn't come with Mac drivers. But of course there is always Vuescan :) And the bottom line is, drivers have kind of become unnecessary for most Mac accessories.

The HP driver for Macs is WORSE than no driver ... :)

Epson and Apple computer had an excellent relationship. You can go online and download tons of Epson Drivers and scanners for every machine they have made in recent years - even ones discontinued long ago. Pair up an Epson Photo Printer with official Epson paper and you get brilliant prints that last over 100 years. On the other hand, get the most expensive Epson Printer and use HP paper or some other brand and the resulting print will be a POS.

  10. I've never had that problem. You can drag and drop single images to iPhoto or go to file, import to library go to the folder you store your photos in, open the folder and click on an image then click import. If you import your whole photo file then you may have a problem. It used to get really slow on my older computers. I have tons of photos and only 139 in iPhoto. But I don't use iPhoto to import images from my camera, only from my iPod Touch. Sometimes I use iPhoto to get rid of red eye, but I use Adobe Photoshop to edit images, mainly because it's what I've used for 16 years now.

Thanks. If you don't have enough memory a big album will just hang. But it's true you can import a few images easily. There is a simple tool to colour-out facial features for anonymity but no pixellation as such. Can't expect much for free these days!

I use all the programs mentioned except Photoshop, could never get my mind around that one!

But for pretty easy to use AND free Picasa is good... for all basic editing and more some times.... I think that is what the OP was looking for....(PC or Mac Versions)

What all these programs tend to lack, is resizing ability ... Picasa allows you to upload to Picnik to do that, which is a pain!

ACDsee, seems to be the only program that does all...but no that cheap.... Their Mac version has a long way to go for the price they want.... :o I have only read reviews and not tried the Mac version....

Adobe Photoshop has a little sister called Photoshop Elements (prices at about 1/6th of Photoshop) should be able to take care of all your resizing, cropping, rotation, color adjustments, etc. Obviously it is much more simpler than the full blown Photoshop.

  11. From what a friend who does computer repairs tells me, this is a big cause of computer problems (condensing?) .... Moisture would be produced as the room temperature rises...causing insides rust out etc...

I just use a fan behind the computers I have...and make sure to clean vent areas periodically...

This extra fan scenario is good advice. It does not have to be a giant fan that sucks the air out of the room but just a small one that moves the air out of the area. Good advice for most computer setups, Mac or otherwise.

  12. This isn't the simple one click solution that you are looking for, but it works for me.

I have an alias of VLC on my desktop and when I want to open a video, I drag the video icon to the VLC alias icon.

Yes there is. Single click on the movie file you want to view. Then press command and i together. That will open an information window. In that window click the "Open with" tab and select VLC. Then click change all. Now when you double click a movie it will automatically open in VLC. By the way, have you tried MPlayerX? I prefer it to VLC. It's free and available in the App Store.

This information is useful for things other than video as well. I work in Photoshop all the time and I hate it when files like a screen shot (png) open with "Preview". I used that method to permanently open all PNG files directly in Photoshop, more or less eliminating Preview as a viewer.

  13. good to hear it'll soon be sorted, and that my diagnosis was correct!

    rolleyes.gif

I highly recommend you get yourself a USB hard drive, download carbon copy cloner and make a bootable back-up.

That way if you have a failure again, you won't lose any data AND you'll still be able to use your laptop.

Excellent advice. Been there -- done that. External drive are relatively dirt cheap, especially the shirt-pocket size ones like the Samsung units.

  14. My observations about landscape photography is you need a really wide angle lens to capture dramatic images and at the same time, good telephotos to pull in that special section from far away. The two lens mentioned by Goshawk above are good for the wide angle, less than $500 lens and to that you might want to add something in the 70-300 mm range. There are a number of zoom lens out there that fall under $500.

One thing you should always remind yourself when you lust for that one more lens (and you will...). Owning a camera system that cost more than a lot of cars DOES NOT mean you can take better pictures. In other words, try to learn what you camera is capable of and you will generally take better pictures.

  15. Country Fried Steak is when you are grilling a steak outdoors, drop it in the grass, and have to take it away from your dog. After rinsing it off, you complete the grilling. That is Country Fried Steak. Or maybe it is a dish consisting of a piece of chicken or tenderized steak, coated with seasoned flour and pan-fried. It's been a while -- I can't remember which recipe is correct.
