  1. Is there anybody who has tried cashless payment on city buses, other than IC bus cards?

It seems both contact less credit cards (including foreign bank issued cards) and domestic Debit cards can be used.  However, none of my Thai  friends know about it.

  2. I don't know about Turkish Mafia, but there are some foreign 'families'. Most of them are Chinese ( as far as I know ) and not well organized like Mafias. Years ago, when Thailand introduced the regulation about car seat belts, I tried to import second-hand seat belts from Japan to sell here, but a friend of mine who ran a used car business warned me about them, told me to go through some Chinese business people in the industry. Back then, Koh Samui was notorious for assasination. Local business men (mostly bangalow owners ) were assassinated almost every week for a while. I'm sure some of the expats remember this.

  3. The ministry of silly walks comes to mind. I can see the lure of bringing them in though. A friend in Hong Kong tells me that an iPhone 6 brought in from overseas has a street price of 3x the £699.00 UK price.

Blimey.....my phone cost 999 baht 5 years ago and still working. Drag me out of the stone age. Maybe not, at those prices. cheesy.gif

     I don't need a cell phone. That's why I bought an iPhone.

Well, I use a palm computer often when I'm out, and I make phone calls when I'm out just because I can make a phone call using an iPhone.

  4. I'm glad inflation hasn't affected fines...it's still 200 then.

I was on the way to the airport with a girl friend on the passenger seat, when we were stopped by a bunch of officers. One of them quickly approached us then took the ignition key away and said, "She, helmet, she helmet," pointing at her head.

I was curios to see what would happen exactly because Thai friends of mine had often told me how they had to pay off a cop on several occasions.

So I asked about the fine, but he just kept saying, "Oh expensive. Very expensive, " and didn't mention either a ticket or bribery. My friend had a plane to catch, so I said to the policeman, "Can I pay now?" He then said, "You want to pay now?"

I reached for my wallet and produced the only bill in there. It was a 500 Baht bill. I was stupid enough to wait for him to give me 300 Baht change, but he walked away, of course, holding the bill underneath his clipboard for the ticket.

It was like 15 yrs ago and none of the people I knew bothered to go all the way to the police station to pay a fine, at least in Chiangmai except for some assertive Farangs. Thai people simply believed paying on the spot was much more reasonable. Cops are happier and victims are 'happier' if they can settle the matter quickly on the spot, and I remember I found it quite interesting. "It is what they are, " I thought. Besides, paying off a cop is an experience I could never have in my home country.

However, things in Thailand have been changing these days, haven't they?

    Sorry about the long story.

  5. <script type='text/javascript'>window.mod_pagespeed_start = Number(new Date());</script>

Other than its being a troll, don't you guys all recognize something? Especially those who have taught Thai students English?

Or those who have worked with Thai workers and read their writing in English?

So you are assuming that the OP is a Thai ?

Yep. How the OP uses a noun as a verb looks familiar, don't you think?

  6. Placed an order for a ipad Mini 16GB wifi on 18th Dec at Apple Online TH

Just called DHL ChiangMai today for a confirmed delivery today. 24th Dec 2012. Very fast.

The website said 2 weeks. But should be much early that mentioned date now.

Thanks. That's good to hear. When I tried to place an order for an engraved Mini Cellular, they said it would be delivered on Jan. 15th. Then it should arrive sometime in the first week of Jan.

  7. I see the cellular mini is now available, well ships in 2 weeks from the Thai Apple ishop.

Is this the best way to get one?

I am wondering about that, too.

Since the new Google Map app is available, I've decided to buy an iPad mini cellular, but I'd like to know how long it will take to get to my apartment door step after I order on the Apple Web Thailand. I'll be in my apartment only for a couple weeks during this winter vac time and I have to carfully decide when to click to order, for the Apple product delivery will not leave it at the reception.

Could anyone know or share your experiences?

  8. [- i would like one SIM card in old regular big size and one in micro-SIM size

    - if i can’t get TWO SIM cards in two sizes, i would like just one SIM card as a hybrid-SIM that fits both sizes ]

Why don't you buy and use a "SIM cutter"? You can buy one in MBK. Or you can even easily cut bigger SIMs yourself without one using a small knife and sandpaper.

  9. Whether you can activate or not depends on the SIM or SIM type. Some SIMs are not for roaming service as default. You'll find out about it when you try to activate, but be careful. Once you activate your SIM card, or even at the moment you are trying to activate it, the account balance quiclkly disappears unless you keep the data communication function off, because using your True SIM in UK means you are on roaming service.

  10. Why bother with overpriced brands like Samsung and Google when they source exactly the same components from exactly the same manufacturers as the cheap Chinese brands. They're all made in China anyway - you're just paying extra for marketing.

There are a lot of differences between the cheap Chinese models and the more expensive name brand models -- screen, cpu, etc. I have read that users like the Gpad. But other than that one, I am not aware of any good quality, reliable chape chinese tablets. I have seen the Hero tablet in Pantip Plaza in BKK. I asked on here what people thought/knew about it, and I got "unreliable, unresponsive, not recommended". The Google Nexus 7 looks like a good compromise, and it gets good reviews. But it has only a 7" screen. Hence, my inquiry here. I think I would be better off (and happier) with a 7" Google Nexus than a cheap Chinese 10" tablet. If you have a specific brand that you have used and like, let me know, and I'll check it out.

I have been using a chinese 9"7' pad for about 5 months and am quite satisfied with it:

    Yuandao N90 Dual Core.

This is a high end Chinese Pad so a little expensive though. 5000-6000 Baht.

  11. Sorry about the mistake: Wrong=And, it took only one hour to drop "60 percent" to "38 percent" even though .....

→ And, it took only one hour to drop FROM "60 percent" to "38 percent" even though .....

It took rather a long time to drop from "100 percent" to "60 percent" or so, but after that.........

So I beleive they "modified" the battery indicator.

  12. To me, it seems they've just changed the battery indicator, in a cunning way. After updating, when it said "72percent" I turned on the 'Flight Mode". After a while, I turned it off. Then it said "74 percent"!! And, it took only one hour to drop "60 percent" to "38 percent" even though I made only one three minute phone call and I kept other applications turned off as usual.
