  1. Without casting aspersions the whole thing sounds dodgy to me.

I have some knowledge with these matters and your last paragraph in particular is a worry.

Let alone that you're not in the country and the father, who must be in his 40's at least, and who also owns property, is the one requiring bail money for being busted with drugs?

I'd be keeping my wallet closed if I was you.

  2. My experiences are pretty much the same as the OP with Australia substituting for America.

It's certainly not anything to worry about: who wouldn't enjoy better education, health services etc.?

The West does most things better than Thailand, that is an indisputable fact.

It's best to be happy wherever you are in the world, and if something is not right, go somewhere else.

A lot of barriers people encounter in life are partly or wholly constructed by themselves.

  3. There will be a memorial party held for Samorn this Saturday night, from 8pm, at the Crazy German Bar on Chiang Moi Road.

The party will also double as a fundraiser for her son.

There will be food, drink and music available on the night.

All are invited and welcome to attend.

For those that would like to contribute, but cannot attend on the night, there is currently a donation box available at the Crazy German Bar.

  4. Any updates here? I'm in the same area (San Sai, Doi Saket) and I need to get rid of some large items too. Is there a dump nearby? The local recycling guys don't take stuff like ancient knackered furniture...

Unfortunately my research led to nothing.

Apparently a yard sale is a good way to get rid of things, even if you think your items are worthless (or close to).

  5. My understanding is that Bangkok police are in town and that is what has caused the strict 12:00am close, along with a number of other related incidents.

Apparently, as usual when officialdom from down South visits town, they will be going back to their home after a week, which i'm guessing will be either tonight, Saturday or Sunday.

Once the General took the steering wheel it became music off by 12:00am, bar can stay open until 1:00am or so (whenever the police pick up does its shut down lap or authority).

I'm presuming next week the situation will return to the scenario as per mentioned in the previous sentence.

  6. Hi Dwight

Thank you for the prompt reply.

I understand the issue and i suggest you make this particular matter more transparent, as you have indicated you will.

I am happy to continue using Baht Smart as long as you can provide a very competitive rate.

I would suggest to other users of Baht Smart that they complete their transfers in the day time when both Australian and Thailand financial insitutions are open, to lessen their exposure to exchange rate fluxuation.

    With thanks again

  7. Hi Dwight - Baht Smart

Just thought i'd highlight something that you may, or may not, choose to look into.

I have used your service once before with no problem.

Yesterday i used it for a second time, and was advised of the amount that would be transferred in Thai Baht, along with the exchange rate.

This morning that amount has come into Thailand as a lesser amount than previously advised, and therefore obviously at a lower exchange rate.

According to your online chat today a different exchange rate was used than the one that i had previously been advised of.

This might be covered in the fine print somewhere, but i consider it poor form to adivse a customer of an exchange rate and a set amount, than to have that changed to a lesser amount when the transaction is finalised.

I'd like to support your business, but if this practice of changing the exchange rates is to be the norm than i will have to reconsider.

I await your reply, or not.

  8. Make your own out of "smartwood", available from Home Mart. Far far cheaper and will not rot or get attacked by rodents/bugs etc. 3 metres of 10 cm wide costs 56 baht.

Went to Home-Mart near Central Festival-

Apart from doors, and a few kitchen cabinets, don't seem to sell wood. What is 'Smart wood' anyway?

It's a cement/fibre based product, as tough as cement but comes in different shapes/widths/colours etc. when it is painted you can't tell it apart from wood and some even has a wood grain on one surface hence it's ideal for patio flooring. I've used it to make trellis to fill the one metre gap under my house, glued or screwed it's very robust and easy to work with.

The SG Home Mart near me has a big display of the stuff, as I recall the Home Mart near Central Festival has also, back near the roof tiles/gutters. Also, Home Pro (Sansai) has a bunch of it also.

    @chiang mai

I'm looking at doing a fence re-bulid, and today i came across what i think you are descibing above, in the hardware place on Sridonchai Road that sells large uncut timber out the back.

Pretty much as described above, in 3 metre lenghts for 50 baht, though it was definitely in its orginal state and not painted, had had a shape applied etc.

What i'm wondering is just how weather proof this stuff is?

I asked the guy in my limited Thai if it could get wet, and be outside, and he said yes.

Any thoughts on the outside durability of this product?

    Much thanks.

  9. Hey guys, any update on this topic?

I've got to do a clean out of the GF's sisters house in a Moo Bahn in San Sai Noi, which is on the 118 heading north towards Doi Saket.

I am aware of the recycling places and the services they offer.

The kind of stuff i have is yard & tree clippings, various debris and waste, and even old cupoards and the like.

Would prefer a landfill/refuse station close to the 118 if anyone knows of anywhere?

    With thanks.

  10. Yup i've lived there previously.

Everything was fine, but... there was/is a school right next door that would start up with a very loud public address system early each morning playing the national anthem, the latest thai pop song that you've hear 1,000 times plus etc.

And the same repeated in the afternoon.

Plus when the kids were out in the playground they managed to make quite the racket themselves.

That was the only issue i had living there, and if you think that would affect you, than you should take that into consideration.

  11. Your wife and her family have to speak the headman in your area, that is the only way this will get resolved.

I would of thought she would of known that already?

As a farang, keep well out of this one.

Edit: Just saw your latest post. Yep, you're stuffed. You could still try to get the headman onboard but it is unlikely that you'd seen any resolution soon, if at all.

  12. The Night Bazaar closes down by midnight, so if you're looking for a late night out you might be better off looking elsewhere.

There is a cross dressing revue of sorts in Anusarn Market at around 9pm which you and your friend might enjoy, though it's more for fun viewing and enjoyment than anything else.

In terms of the LGBT scene i'm far from informed, though it definitely does exist.

You are correct regarding the gay male club scene being dominant, though there are plenty of gay gals here as well, and they must go somewhere.

Maybe try a FB search in Thai using Google translate?

  13. I spotted a shop selling treadmills the other night on the road from Saraphi which continues through Nong Hoi and into the City.

Sorry, can't remember exactly whereabouts but quite visible on the left as you are coming in.

  14. Off topic - sort of.

There will be something called the "Pop Up" festival taking place at the vacant block of land close to the Rivermarket restaurant.

    This weekend i think.

There's signage down there. Dave2, do your thing!

Ok, it's called Pop Market, is on this Saturday and Sunday between 2pm and 10pm at the 140 year old Lanna house, and is a market for local designers to sell their wares as part of Chiang Mai Design Week.
