  1. Yet this section was one of the last planned-to-be-doubled, under the (currently underway) SRT track-doubling plans, so why study it now ?

    Even Yingluck's plan for a high-speed passenger-only network had wisely left it until last, when she hoped some private-enterprise group might step forwards, to build the more-difficult section North from Phitsanulok through the hills & mountains !

    Perhaps "About Bt117 million has been set aside for the study and design of the one-metre gauge railway" gives a clue ? whistling.gif

    The reason for the study is they have 3 choices for improving this section of the line between Bangkok and Chiang Mai

    1) lay a second track beside the existing 1 meter track - cheapest but slowest

    2) Spend more money and re-align some sections to make straighter and with broader curves - faster trains, shorter distance, but increase in cost

    3) Spend a lot more money straightening the track - probably more tunnels and bigger cuttings to make as straight as feasible, hence shortest distance and fastest trains, and most expensive.

    They may have also be looking at later on building a track from Den Chai to Chiang Rai

  2. According to the news at the time payments were only made to people that PTP " deemed eligible "

    If some 96 people were killed and each received 7.75 million baht the total should have been 744 million baht, plus payments for those injured

    But only 577.66 was paid out

    So who died but was deemed ineligible as even if only those that were killed were paid 577.66 would only cover 74 people, but a total of 524 people received payments

    So lets say only 50 of the people killed were deemed eligible and received money and 474 others also received money because of injuries

    50 x 7.75 = 387.5 million

    Leaves 190 million divided by 474 = 400,000 per person

    Whatever are the correct numbers, it leaves a lot of people killed who were deemed ineligible by PTP

    Why should also be a question raised by NACC ?

  3. KSA is off the Richter scale in terms of inhumanity and off topic

    Yes sovereign states may apply their own penalties.

    but surely you would agree that civilised counties ditched the death penalty years ago

    Who threw that stone?

    Who was it!

    Oh never mind

    "but surely you would agree that civilised counties ditched the death penalty years ago"

    But some of the countries below are civilized

  4. Earth closest to sun for 2015 on January 4

    http://earthsky.org/tonight/earth-comes-closest-to-sun-every-year-in-early-january

    I am sorry to spoil Thailand's fun if Songkran is celebrated when the Earth/Thailand is closest to the sun.

    Another Thai with a poor education and knowledge of astronomy. (astrology maybe )

    Of course he could believe that Thailand orbits the sun differently to Earth, or maybe that the Sun orbits Thailand

    If he had just said Songkran is celebrated in one of Thailand's hottest months he could he retained some credability

  5. They never mentioned how many of the busses had single wheels on the rear double axels. I have only seen 1 wheels on each side of the rear ax cel on most busses.

    Axel is a man's name, eg Axel Foley in Beverly Hills Cop.

    Almost all tri-axle ie double rear axle buses all over the world only have single wheels on their 3rd ie rear axle.

    They are designed this way for several reasons

    To spread the weight over more wheels when extra long or double deck, but don't need double dual tires.

    Many are connected to the front steering to make tight corner easier and reduces these tires scuffing

    Some are retractable to save tire wear when empty.

    Can be easier to fit the rear engine and gearbox with single tires

  6. Amazing that Thais died, and according to the officer foreign tourists suffered minor injuries. Convenient, or they were wearing crucifixes?

    In 1980 I was a tour guide on an English Volvo coach going from Monaco to Nice, when 4 Belgians in a car came around the corner in front of us going much to fast and slammed into the front of our coach. The car was destroyed and three of them died at the scene and one died later in hospital. No-one was injured in the coach even though the car hit under my feet and buckled the stairwell where I was standing. What saved me and my passengers was that the bus was constructed on a truck chassis with two full length chassis rails. No crucifixes or amulets were involved

    In this latest case the pick-up truck appears from a photo I saw to have hit the rear wheels of the bus at speed, so the occupants stood no chance even if they were wearing amulets.

  7. According to this report, he hit the windshield and then ended up 200 meters away? There has to be more to the story.

    Car going 120-140kph, hits motorbike, the rider hits the windshield and is thrown over the back, the motosai is lodged in the front of the car, the driver of the car tries to minimize the risk of a further collision or loss of control by slowly bringing the car to a halt in safe place and not jumping on the brakes and endangering himself and his family any more, like some inexperienced driver may do.

    "bringing the car to a halt in safe place and not jumping on the brakes and endangering himself and his family any more, like some inexperienced driver may do. "

    ?? You ever heard of ABS? Do you have an advanced driver's licence?

    In, or even approaching, a collision, if avoidance is not possible for sure you slam the brakes and the judder of ABS stops you a lot more slowly and permits steering, without endangering anything. I don't know where you got your last statement from but it is complete BS.

    Hit your brakes suddenly and you have the Thai who is tailgating you slam into the back of your vehicle.

    Only hit you brakes suddenly in Thailand to stop yourself running up the back of another vehicle.

  8. The attached table shows that between 2007 and 2014 Thailand's household debt had one of the largest increases in the world, 26%

    What is saving Thailand is corporate debt has increased a very small percentage, although this may mean very little has been invested in Thailand, but also could be self financed from profits

    Government debt has only increased by a relatively small amount as well

  9. simple, no ?

    how did she afford 22 assets worht 300 million baht ?

    did she work 300 years for a 1 million baht salary ?

    or 30 years for a 10 million baht salary ?

    or 3 years for a 100 million baht salary ?

    It may or may not apply in this case, I din't know, neither do you, but have you never heard of inheritances, or making good investments? Just because someone's salary is less than the value of their assets doesn't necessarily make them a criminal.

    But she acts like a criminal

    In another news article it said she fled and above it says

    " the accused had escaped arrest and that the statute of limitations for the case had expired in October 2012."

    Reading this should make JOC happy as she probably isn't a Red supporter

  10. The monorail around central Sydney was a failure and has been torn down

    The pink route follows Chaeng Wattana Road which is extremely busy. It will pass the Government Complex Buildings, several shopping Malls, large hospitals, and hotels. It will cross the future extensions to the northern Red, Green and inter airport lines and connects to the almost completed Purple line.

    So I would have thought it would justify light rail instead of Monorail.

  11. Squatters do have rights if they have occupied land for a certain amount of time, done certain things to comply with the lands occupation. I saw the quote below on a legal web site. So not sure how, or if the land that is being taken back, is private or Government land.

    So some, not all of these people may have a legal and legitimate claim on the lands.

    Under Thai law, squatters who occupied another person's land without permission can eventually claim ownership of the said land parcels if the land's rightful owner was not able to evict them in a certain period of time. A Chanote title deed gives land owners 10 years to evict the squatters from their land before they lose their ownership. http://usa.siam-legal.com/property-thailand/title-deeds.php

    Have you looked at the current photos ?

    There are no Squatters Rights when you have illegally built your home on stilts over a klong or river.

    As well as causing massive water pollution due to no sewers and dumping their rubbish, these people are one of the causes of flooding in Bangkok as they restrict the water flow by their stilts and filling canals with rubbish, plus they stop the authorities properly dredging the canals.

  12. "And God said to Noah, 'I have determined to make an end of all flesh; for BKK is filled with violence through them; behold, I will destroy them with BKK. Make yourself an ark of gopher wood; make rooms in the ark, and cover it inside and out with pitch. This is how you are to make it: the length of the ark three hundred cubits, its breadth fifty cubits, and its height thirty cubits. Make a roof for the ark, and finish it to a cubit above; and set the door of the ark in its side; make it with lower, second, and third decks.

    "For behold, I will bring a flood of waters upon BKK, to destroy all flesh in which is the breath of life from under heaven; everything that is in BKK shall die. But I will establish my covenant with you; and you shall come into the ark, you, your sons, your wife, and your sons' wives with you.

    "And of every living thing of all flesh, you shall bring two of every sort into the ark, to keep them alive with you; they shall be male and female. Of the birds according to their kinds, and of the animals according to their kinds, of every creeping thing of the ground according to its kind, two of every sort shall come in to you, to keep them alive. Also take with you every sort of food that is eaten, and store it up; and it shall serve as food for you and for them.

    Costas - you left off Noah's reply

    ( as per Bill Cosby )

  13. Paying the piper. Meanwhile, discussion about increasing VAT (which hits low income people hardest) goes on....

    VAT hits middle income as most poor Thais don't pay VATas there are so many exemptions

    Any person or entity who regularly supplies goods or provides services in Thailand and has an annual turnover exceeding 1.8 million baht is subject to VAT in Thailand

    Certain activities are exempted from VAT. Those activities are :

    1. Small entrepreneur whose annual turnover is less than 1.8 million baht;
    2. Sales and import of unprocessed agricultural products and related goods such as fertilizers, animal feeds, pesticides, etc.;
    3. Sales and import of newspapers, magazines, and textbooks;
    4. Certain basic services such as:
      • transportation : domestic and international transportation by way of land;
      • healthcare services provided by government and private hospitals as well as clinics;v
      • educational services provided by government and private schools and other recognized educational institutions;
    5. professional services : Medical and auditing services, lawyer services in court and other similar professional services that have laws regulating such professions;
    6. income from business, commerce, agriculture, industry, transport or any other activity not specified earlier.
    7. Cultural services such as amateur sports, services of libraries, museums, zoos;
    8. Services in the nature of employment of labour, research and technical services and services of public entertainers;
    9. Goods exempted from import duties under the Industrial Estate law imported into an Export Processing Zones (EPZs) and under Chapter 4 of the Customs Tariff Act;
    10. Imported goods that are kept under the supervision of the Customs Department which will be re-exported and be entitled to a refund for import duties; and
    11. Other services such as religious and charitable services, services of government agencies and local authorities.
  14. "sale of lottery tickets through convenience stores charging that the plans will encourage gambling and benefit the money barons."

    Thai people will gamble no matter what system is in place so hard to encourage them to gamble more, especially since under the current system where sellers wander the streets and approach everyone to buy a ticket.

    eg. I get approached to buy tickets several times a day, but seldom go into a convenience store.

    At the moment the wholesale system benefits a few powerful families who have some how paid some-one to become rich middlemen for doing very little

    Why not stipulate that the current ticket sellers have to supervise the lottery machines in the convenience store, that way many of the disabled sellers will have a job

  15. Should a temporary fill in pm and the army be making such huge long term expensive commitments? Shouldn't such thing wait until there is an election and a government is elected. I thought Prayuth's only goal was reform and reconciliation. He appears to have got derailed on his objective or he plans to stay around forever.

    Surely it is just a continuation of Yingluck's fast train plan .

    So why do they need to wait for another government

    And it would appear cheaper

    Remember she illegally past a bill to borrow 2 trillion baht with 3 trillion interest over 50 years

    Luckily it was stopped by the Constitutional Court before PTP could get their grubby hands on it and use it to cover up some of the losses on the Rice Scam.

    Sure China will make money in lots of ways - inflated construction cost, maintenance and training fees

    At least there shouldll be a lower level of corruption as there will be a lot less off the budget finance and closed books.

    One would expect that China will be paying fees for their freight when shipped across Thailand to ports or to Singapore. It would actually make sense for China to use Dawei Port in Myanmar as shorter shipping distance to Europe, Mid-east etc plus a shorter train trip.

  16. Doubt that thing will ever see the inside of a cell. saai.gif

    I am not a fan of Ms Yingluck and what happens to her in the end is up to the judiciary, not anyone on here, and if she receives gaol time or not, that again will be the responsibility of Thais, not a few vexatious farangs.

    But I do have to ask if you're referring to her as a thing? If you are, and you're a farang, then with speak like that I can see why many Thais think the way they do about us farangs and I feel disgusted that another human can refer to another as a thing.. She is not an inanimate material object but a living sentient being so whether or not she has done anything wrong she should, when being discussed, shown some courtesy.

    If I have misconstrued your post, which I doubt, but if I have, then I regret doing so..

    He is just being derogatory and thing is used to describe people

    So feel disgusted at Taylor Swift and Talking Heads - the use of thing didn't stop them selling millions of records

    eg

    Talor Swift song " Better than Revenge " has a line

    I'm just another thing for you

    or

    Talking Heads " Stay up late "

    Mommy had a little baby / There he is fast asleep / He's just a little play thing / Why not wake him up?

    or

    He was just a play thing for her

    So get off your high horse

  17. So the law suits will continue until they finally force her to leave the country.

    Anybody who considers this administration reconciliatory is ignorant.

    Just think one day, she might even answer the Ombudsman's question about the illegal passport her cousin the former foreign minister issued and hand delivered to her criminal fugitive brother at a time the country was facing the worst floods in living memory.

    Hope cousin number 1 has a receipt for the cost of the new passport and the air fare - hate to see him charged with misusing tax payers money as well as illegal issuing of a passport to a criminal fugitive.

    And what's stopping that passport being cancelled? It can happen at the stroke of a keyboard so why hasn't it been done?

    I hope its not too long that the board of directors of THAi are indicted soon for their negligence in the national carrier Losing money by the hundreds of millions annually.

    No problem seeing Yingluck punished for neglect if the intent it to punish all those who have been negligent with piss poor performance then also a wee look into the bomb detector scam!!

    As for the poster who said the money from the rice scam is in offshore personal accounts, I'd love to see a link that has acknowledged where the missing money has been located ?

    A washing machine in Dubai ?
