  1. It would be far more expensive for me to live in Europe than it is for me living here. Here I can live comfortably....at home I'd be on the streets. (metaphorically speaking).

    Spain is very cheap.

    House and apartment purchase prices cheaper than Thailand, rent not so.

    And if you're British,

    1.4 Euro to the GBP, at one point it was 1:1, so great exchange rate too.

    Worth 40% more than 6 years ago, I might have ended up in Europe with an exchange rate like that.

    The Euro is still strong

    If you're British it was 1.50+ to the GBP not so long ago.

  2. you will have to claim your pension when your 65 ,pay your NI or there cut your pension ,tell the tax people ,your accountant should do that for you

    I am in a similar position and have told the authorities nothing. I am coming up to 65 though and want an estimate of my state pension. I guess then i will be honest and tell them i live abroad, and get no inflation uplifts. On the form however there is a question "when did you leave the UK". Not sure how to answer that. Do i say in 2009 when i started to live here, or say nothing until i am 65. If i say 2009 will the pension be frozen at the rates in 2009 or those in force when i reach 65?

  3. I brought my UK xbox360 over a few years ago together with about 20 UK games. The xbox has died now and i am looking for a replacement. Will a thai xbox here run all my UK games. Thailand uses PAL but i see many NTSC links on their games. Does it have to be modified or use a rgh? The 4gb box seems much cheaper but is that any use to play games with such a small amount of storage.

  4. While I like the idea of 4K Blu-Ray, I would be hesitant about buying my favourite movies all over again in yet another format. I'm nearly broke after buying them in VHS video, Laserdisc, regular DVD and standard Blu-Ray and have run out of shelf space to add 4K Blu-Ray. I think buyer fatigue will have a strong impact on sales and suspect many fans with large libraries will be content to upscale from 1080.

    Yeah, I can't see too much point in replacing your back library... but if you still buy movies on media, it kinda makes sense to start buying 4K when it's released wink.png

    I would like some 4k Blu-rays for my UHD tv but i suspect in thailand they will be too expensive, like 2,000 baht a time. I am not buying all my old movies again at that price.

  5. Where does the tunnel start/finish once complete?

    Edit: Google is our friend.

    Pattaya Klang 1.9 kilometres towards Sattahip.

    nah that got canned.

    This current one is only 420metres long and goes under Klang. There is a second planned which goes under Tai and Threpasit.

    So 2-3 years of chaos and 1 billion baht cost just to save having to stop for a minute at the Klang traffic lights - unbelievable.

  6. Yes you have to show proof of travel, air tickets and hotel booking. Small risk i suppose if they then refused your visa (unlikely). The main hassle though are the two trips to BKK. Only takes a few minutes in the Embassy.

  7. I always do it myself at the Chinese embassy in Bkk

    Just fill in the paperwork,downloaded from their website..

    2400 Thb

    Just got my visa from the Chinese Embassy in BKK. Very easy to do but requires two trips, one to drop off the paperwork and one 4 days later to collect the visa. Cost 1,100 for foreigners.

  8. I never ride at night, certainly not at midnight. You can bet 50%+ of other road users are pissed.

    LOL! What would you do if you're unavoidably out after midnight? Do you leave your bike somewhere and take a baht bus home? For example, what is the probability of an accident between 23:00 - 00:00 compared to 00:00 - 1:00.

    I always ride at night and usually after midnight as it's my favourite time to go out shopping and I'm a night owl. Although there may be more drunk riders/drivers around at that time, due to lower traffic volume your chance of an accident is probably lower.

    I think external factors (time of day etc) are overrated compared to riding and observational skills/alertness. Defensive riding skills (always anticipating the worst, riding at safe speeds, staying alert) will keep you alive and healthy for longer.

    Pattaya has one of the worlds best, and cheapest, public transport systems, the baht bus. Easy to use after dark. A small inconvenience to stay alive.

  9. I bought a Samsung DVD player/recorder when i came to Thailand and used it to record programmes off Truevisions onto its 160gb harddrive.. I am sure it would work equally well with CTH. I had to set each timed recording manually though which was a bit fiddly. Since then however i have got Truvisions own PVR which is MUCH better. The menu system is so easy to use and you can add an unlimited number of 2.5in storage drives. Well worth the 99 baht a month. This would not work with CTH though.

    I've just had True installed and looking to go the True PVR route. Was quite surprised to see that you actually have to buy and attach a separate E-SATA HDD when you want to use it. Boxes I've used in UK, France and Malaysia come with integral HDDs. Very odd.

    Only bonus I suppose is that they said activating the PVR is free on the Gold Package.

    Actually that is an advantage because you are not limited to a built in HDD. I have 3 1TB external hard drives which i switch as required, only takes a few seconds. In effect you have unlimited storage capacity.

  10. Lasted seven years, came back last fall.

    Cost of living is cheaper here, better quality of life, and:

    People smile without hoping for anything other than a smile back;

    Haven't heard a single dog bark in three months, let alone been attacked by a pack of them;

    No burning of plastic;

    No loud music, caterwauling as the moon sets, or unbridled exhaust;

    Haven't seen one person pick their nose. Nope, not even the person preparing my food ...

    Were there good things about my time in Thailand? Sure, but no where near enough to consider living there any longer, let alone dying there.

    My wife is joining me in April. We have a bucket list in the first month that includes:

    The Grand Canyon- camping and rafting;

    Las Vegas- attending a Cirque de Sol show, and, in the casinos, losing money;

    Driving north from San Diego through Malibu, sailing to and about Catalina, then taking Hwy 1 up the coast into Washington State and eventually Victoria, B.C. We'll stop at wineries and cheese farms along the way, detouring for camping in Sequoia National Park, and Redwood National Forest. Then Yosemite and back over to the coast ….

    Absolutely no way I would consider wasting another precious day of life in LOS.

    You are lucky in the USA you have a cheap cost of living and a big country to live in and explore. What do we have in the UK? a Muslim hellhole, taxed to death by socialists. No thanks i'm staying here.

  11. Speaking of alcohol, anyone tried the 5 litres of red wine they sell at makro for 6-700 baht ? Imported from South Africa and Chile I think.

    I like it, in fact they do an 8 litre box now for 1,200 baht. Can't argue with the value. The 5 litre boxes are 969 baht.

  12. I've just sent a fairly large amount from my Halifax bank in the UK to my Kasikorn account here. I sent Sterling of course and paid the 9.50 GBP fee from the Halifax. When Kasikorn rang me to say the money was here it was down a further 14.50 GBP from the amount i sent, which i suspect is another fee from a UK intermediary bank. Kasikorn of course knocked off their fees as well. So overall quite an expensive transfer.

  13. I tried them a few times using a credit card. Every transaction cancelled. Never tried COD

    I noticed that some items do not allow COD and only CC etc. these were mostly import cellphones

    COD can be a pain because you have to co-ordinate the delivery. I really like their "Counter Payment" option where you print out the Counter Payment order form and take it to any 7-11 and pay there. You will get a confirmation email within an hour. My apartment has an office where deliveries can be dropped off. I don't need to be there.

    I've bought quite a few devices from Lazada. The 2 times I was dissatisfied with products I received from them, they were accepted for return; no problem.

    The whole point of COD is that you can check the goods before you accept delivery and pay.

    I am amazed that the drivers do not have some sort of GPS for finding their delivery points. I had one the other day ring me 4 or 5 times to find my condo but it is clearly shown on Google maps.
