  1. For 2m Baht, SWIFT transfer in STERLING from a UK bank account to a Thai bank account.

Even with the SWIFT and receiving bank fees you WILL be better off overall than using a Forex company, PayPal or Western Union.

I sent £50,000 in October and believe me, I did a lot of research.

As for buying a house, you will NEVER own the land on which it is built, so be very careful how you spend your money !

PS. I have just seen your other thread, look into a USUFRUCT over the land and house.

Also, if you tell the Thai bank a large amount is coming, the Head Office CAN offer you a slightly better rate, my wife managed to get a few satang more per pound by calling SCB as advised by another forum member.

Can you please tell us which Forex company. I always thought PayPal/Western Union were expensive. I am transferring 50,000 pounds as well soon so each satang counts.

  2. Hopefully me renting a place out for 6 -12 months next year in pattaya Or Jonteim , I might get a good deal seeing as though the agents might be a little desperate ? .. What do you reckon ..

If it's in a half finished Russian dominated development i don't think you will want it.

  3. Not many benzers here ;-)

    you must be joking

you will see either a BMW, benz or Porsche cayenne every 500 meters in bangkok

here in the northern part of thailand there are ALOT of newer benz models

Just highlights the level of corruption if so many thais (with an average income of 250,000 baht a year) can buy a car worth 3-4 million. Even in the west few people would spend $120,000 on a car.

  4. Anyone been out there and able to share impressions? Is it worth the (long) trip out to BITEC? My main interest is home theatre. I'd love to see the new LG Oled TV being demoed.

I was going to go but put off by the thought of a long journey. I am sure the Oled TV is on display here in Pattaya, try Numchai on Sukumvit road.

  5. I have a floater, can they be removed? sorry about your steak

I would be interested to hear what this specialist says about floaters. I have just had a big one appear in my eye which is really annoying. I presumed there was nothing much that could be done.

  6. I was thinking of driving there but the thought of going through Bangkok puts me off a bit. How easy is it to navigate through Bangkok without gettin lost in the side streets.

    Very easy,no side streets....

From Pattaya take #7 all the way to Bangkok past the airport, take the #9 west (left) all the way round to the 340 (Suphan Buri turn off) take that road, then not too far take the 346 to Bang Len off to your left follow that road all the way to Kanchanaburi, between 3 and 3.5 hours.

Do not take the route via Nakon Pathom - about 200 sets of traffic lights and takes about 5 to 6 hours.

Thanks for this very helpful post. On the map the most direct route off #9 seems to be route 4 then the 323. I presume this is the route you say NOT to take.

I am off there early January so fingers crossed i don't get lost.

  7. This is a serious problem in central Pattaya where the one-way nature of Second Road and Beach Road means that people will drive their monster trucks down the tightest of sois to get to one or the other - throw in the horde of motorcyclists and pedestrians trying to avoid walking in the gutters have Buckley's. I've seen a few near misses with belligerent drunks - its only a matter of time before one of them is cleaned up by an impatient moto-taxi rider. These streets just weren't designed for the volume of traffic that currently does laps from Central Festival to Walking St - having someone park a 3-tonne pickup in a soi designed for motorcycles and food vendor carts isnt helping.

Tourism may account for less than 10% of Thai GDP, but it's still an important source of income for people in this town - why make the tourist experience any more annoying than it has to be in a city suffering from a massive oversupply of people who think nothing of jabbing you in the ribs with the dodgy DVDs or whatever they're trying to flog ? These folk - particularly the dreaded rose sellers - seem increasingly desperate : I suspect that even new arrivals arent keen to part with a hundred baht for a flower. The party may very well be over for anyone who has been content to copy what they see others doing in the tourist areas - if it was me, I'd be selling sex toys but that's a whole other thread right there.

Rural Thais continue to flock to Pattaya in the mistaken belief that there will be enough goose to go around - I believe that many will find out the hard way that it's no longer the feeding frenzy it may once have been.

I suspect many of the those driving monster SUVs down narrow sois are farangs. I could never understand why someone would try to squeeze his monster truck down say soi 7 rather than drive 50 yards further to Pattaya Klang.

  8. Just wondering how this process works in Thailand. In the UK the solicitors manage the sale and purchase so they happen on the same day. You load up your furniture in the morning and unload in your new house in the afternoon. All the paperwork/payments are sorted by the solicitor.

If you are selling and buying in Thailand do all the sellers and buyers have to go to the Land Office together and sign all the papers, get their chanotes etc. What happens if there is a "chain" of sales which depend on each other for funding. When are you expected to vacate the sold property, the same day? which would be difficult if you are in the Land Office. What do you do with all your possessions if the purchase of the new property is not complete?

When i bought my condo it was easy of course with no other property involved. Just signed the papers at the Land Office and moved in a few days later.

  9. I was at Silver Lake yesterday, a few tourists but not packed. Quite a nice place to visit but not much to do, except the 250 baht wine tour. Would be very expensive to visit via a taxi. Best way is to rent a bike or car and take your time touring the area.

  10. I need to renew my shower tiles and two thai firms i have asked have quoted to put the new tile on top of the old tile. Not sure if that is because they just don't want to remove the old tiles or whether tile on tile works OK. There seems to be a mixed opinion here. Maybe will ask around for some more quotes but there doesn't seem to be many tilers available. Any one know a good one in the Pattaya area?
