One thing stands out, the Thai teacher talking about safety. It was just a week or two ago that a kid drowned in Kalasin during an excursion. Not the first time, also I remember kids dieing after being forgotten in mini vans and getting stuck in caves after being taken down by teachers. Then there's the unregistered motorbikes ridden to school by kids with neither helmets or licenses, which is fine as long as the hair and uniform are correct.

Australia is safety obsessed, the 'she'll be right mate' attitude seems a thing of the past.

Rape and sexual assualt of students by teachers here isn't that uncommon here, often almost tolerated. That would have been an interesting discussion with their Aussie counterparts.

    Then there's freedom of expression...

So exactly the same as in Australia, where only locals can get a Medicare card and discounts on medicine.

The headline and the way it is written will stir up all the PC brigade who like to endlessly claim they are victimised "It's not fair"

    500 baht.

    Who cares?

It's not exactly the same at all There are tourists and there are long stay expats , if you had same in Australia , hence staying long time you would qualify for at least the blue medicare card , so it would be free .

Sure if a tourist ( well there would be none of them ) charge them the 500 .

Spot on , exactly what I was thinking as reading , Australia is safety obessed to the max , maybe you don't climb a tree at school here but you see so many other dangerous actions .

When I went to an Australian primary school , plenty of heirachy in.those days , it's turned out there was a pedophile ring , took 30 years to come out . That's what heirachy and capital punishment achieves ..silence . I was not a victim , but despite being young I knew something was happening , particularly in the football team and other sports , plus the Library master .

Could have very well been a 30 year old that went to buy Tom Yum soup in the market from an infected auntie that is not aware she is infected, but they had to scapegoat the entertainment industry a bit, with a younger person's death with no preconditions.

    Spot on ..

Overweight , entertainment industry , correct time of year

No curfews, but then there is nothing now open Between 11pm and 4am, so why would anyone really be out and about.  No gatherings, no bars, no late night munchies, so in essence a pseudo curfew.  This is supposed to encourage people to reduce their travels and movement during those times.  Back to where we were last year for the kids going to school as well, at least until April 30th.  Looks like this school break will end up like last years with kids being stuck at home....argh

Reckon that's the point exactly ..

Although it stops what happened last time , when a homeless man was booked for curfew breaches .

But , yep the message is clear .

At some point will herd immunity occur without vaccines? I have very little faith in Thailand's vaccination program but at some point most of the population will have had Covid. I know this is not the desirable way to manage a pandemic but not sure if there is any other way out here? Then again perhaps all the different variants make it impossible without a vaccine?

As long as masses don't die which they won't , it's a very desirable way of managing it , most people are not very sick at all , forget the idea of all going to hospital , not possible , get as much Vax out there as possible , and just get with life ,  the most viable circumstance is a functioning , exposed immune .

Now , sure those at risk should stay put , but unlikely to have any massive negative outcome here . Who knows what the actual numbers are  ? Quickest way to herd , while progressing the immune , now getting the Vax numbers up would be great also .

All rubbish about treatments!!!! I know where 2 people in an apartment near me having COVID 19, informed the govt hospital but no pickup and the reason was because the beds are full!!! They are a poor couple... so money no honey!!! The real infection, in treatment patients and deaths are TOTALLY UNDERSTATED!!! If you have the money.... Thai or foreigner - get the shots if you can afford it!!!! No use talking about - DO IT!!!

And I take it the poor couple are still alive , do where is the problem ?

Nothing has changed in 14 days , and nothing needs to change , the response here was great , pointless trying to chase asymptomatic down a hole .

Best defense is an immune system that's functional , lock downs don't work , they make strains tougher . So just bring on the Vax , work toward herd , which UK is now approaching , there was never a reason for overeaction ..ANYWHERE .

Thailand has done extremely well , zero point going looking .

    • Confused 1
  7. The best protection is an immune system , you can't play with nature , lockdowns don't work and they won't be working here .

Forget all else , focus on the Vax rollout , we don't do Covid here , and that goes for 20 / 21 / 22 or any others you may like to name .

As previously mentioned , absolutely nothing has changed , we will be back to biz in 14 days , no matter how many ( mainly Farang ) seem to wish otherwise .

Thai people have strong immune , they've dealt with far worse than this , no one is ill ,no one is dieing .

Just get on with life .

    • Confused 2
  8. We don't do Covid here ..

The test is irrelevant , and never ever meant for purpose . We don't need tests , don't want them , zero has changed just get on with life or seriously you are in the wrong country .

Never a reason to be tested , what is required in a functional immune , no greater defence , we have no problem here , cases mean NOTHING .

We long ago hit herd , just get on with life , massively overated .

CV19 will be with us for the rest of our lives.  Just like variants of the Spanish flu are still with us today.  100 years later.

That's correct, it's a virus it was never going anywhere , vaccinations may help a little but are not ultimate solutions  , just assisting .

As with every other virus ever , it must be lived with , exactly why lockdowns don't work , you can't play with nature , a strong functional , evolving immune system , same reasoning with stronger strains , all the above weakens the virus .

That's why Thailand has done so well and that's exactly why Thailand will continue to do well ,

As healthy as possible , few overweight , not much overuse of script meds .

You need an immune ,and you need to be as healthy as possible , you need to eat well , these are the messages that must be promoted , there is always a price to be paid , and immune must always evolve .

Yes, I believe that’s how it works. That would be the correct monetary motivation and the right info to feed a docile, fearful public. But the real catch may come down the road with an increased number of deaths to be blamed on Covid instead of on the vaccine since it may be that the vaccine diminishes overall immunity. See the interview with Geert Vanden Bossche, still up on youtube.

This is the exact problem , it may well hinder getting to herd . Here we did well because of few actions , with border closures nothing much coming in , and in general good natural immunity .

Just like a Thai caddy , you will take " Just don't hinder " , this is the risk of this Vax on the healthy .

I'm not anti vax by any means , I've had every Vax I could have to now , but nothing beats a strong , functional , updated , exposed , immune , you must have a functional immune .

Lockdowns do not assist this , and decrease required exposure .

I said from the start why are they wasting the vaccine on people already on their death bed. Get the economy up and running first.

Spot on ,makes zero sense injecting those on deaths door .

This guy may well have lived a number of more years , now they top him with the Vax , if he has this history advise him not to have , don't just claim " it had nothing to do with it " ..

As with everything related to well overstated CV , the cure is more of a problem than the disease .

But , I get it has to happen to get the place open , no need to shoot up the sick and very old , start with the healthy and then let's see what happens ..

RIP , what a tragic end for the family .

  12. If it possibly could be policed and some 5 k fines handed out great , 5 k into consolidated great ..

BUT , It's gotta be the TOP speed , not just repeatedly getting passed at 150 k , that a joke , the harder the hit , the more dangerous the collision , and please ..this constant lane changing ..

Extremely dangerous , Wayyyyy too fast , driving automatic cars with two feet , all requires education , and all contribute to one of the worst road tolls in the world .

Throw in helmets , pick ups ...OMG

  13. Don't have a problem with it as it is written , the problem is this will not be as it pans out , they rip past you when travelling 120 k already , small bikes at 80 k  ? Not sure about that take , a registered " fast lane " fair enough ...

But these limits are simply never followed , it would be a constant lane change at 120 k , or someone nipping left / right , constant lane changes at 140 / 150

    Extremely dangerous .

There will be a Songkran in Thailand.  Maybe not at Pattaya,  Phuket and other tourist areas but go to a thai village/town where there is very few falang and the party will be in full swing.

    Absolutely spot on ..

This year the party will be big , for those fools who wish to denegrate what is a wonderful custom., Really ?

If you don't like it , self isolate by choice and question what you are doing here . This year will no doubt be BIG loud and bright , it's a great festival , embrace it , or lock yourself up , but don't be critical , you have a choice .

Study reveals how much money you need to retire in Thailand

    1.jpg

Anyone thinking about retiring to Thailand should have the equivalent of around 11 million Baht in savings (approx USD$390,000), that’s according to a new study on the cost of retirement around the world.

The study, carried out by online lender NetCredit titled The Cost of a Comfortable Retirement Around the World, looked at how much someone might need to retire aboard and enjoy their same quality of life.

This was determined as going out once a week, takeout coffee once a week, no smoking, moderate drinking, no taxis or rideshares, eating mainly Western food at home, two vacations and renting a 1 bed apartment in a city centre, among other factors.

The figures are based on someone living for around 14 years after they retire - with the average age of retirement in America (64) and the average life expectancy (78.7). The same calculations were then applied to almost every country.

The study found that a person retiring to Thailand would need $389,835 in savings in order to maintain the same standard of living they were used to in the West.

The amount of savings required for Thailand were considerably lower than the amount needed to retire comfortably in both the United Kingdom ($515,742) and the United States ($601,489.63).

    2.png

Regionally, Southeast Asia remained an affordable option for retirement, with Indonesia ($290,599), Malaysia ($321,614), Vietnam ($353,906) and the Philippines ($369,340) offering cheaper alternatives to Thailand, while Cambodia ($389,146) was on a par with the Land of Smiles in terms the amount of savings needed.

In order to retire in Singapore ($946,993) or Hong Kong($871,578), you’d need around three times the amount of savings needed to retire in Thailand.

Around the world, Bermuda was found to be the most expensive country, where you’d need savings of more  than $1 million dollars for a luxury retirement in paradise.

Elsewhere in North America, Mexico was the cheapest place for retirement where savings of $257,078 is enough for a comfortable retirement.

If they mean amount of capital required to generate the income required , they are about correct .

If they are referring to " Spend till you drop " then they are not taking into account those on some thing of benefit , social security , or pension .

With what's excluded , it must be a strange way of living ..

Take out once a week ?.and Zero transport  ?. People live at very differing levels , I appreciate that .

After rent and car ,you need 10 k barht a week , 520 k barht PA , plus rent pa , and transport whatever that may be , this is a good rule of thumb , and less than that , you are not doing much . So what's the point.

You may be right but I highly suspect Tanzania, Lao and Cambodia post low numbers for several reasons:  a) relatively young populations so fewer severe cases b) lack of testing c) possibly attributing older person deaths to other causes (pneumonia, malaria, Dengue etc.)

I agree , but the other way around .

Western countries reporting Covid deaths that are simply not , no flu , no pneumonia , no dengee ( where applicable ) just CV CV and CV .

Look at total deaths all causes ,also most older deaths occur with CV , just as may well have been the case , with flu .

    Total deaths all causes .

So what IS the answer to the lack of deaths and empty hospitals IYHO?
A sincere question because it’s baffled me for a long time. I don’t believe you can hide deaths and overflowing hospitals  in today’s transparent media without a Google gagging onset?

Exactly , agree 100 % , no way you could hide all these deaths , and that's because ..No one is dieing  !

Thailand responce has been reasoned and logical , but at the end of the day this is a virus and it must be lived " with " .

Most of the world , in developed areas it's been handled poorly . Best place to be in the world ..Right here .

BUT one thing is certain , the old Pattaya is a dead duck , this was obvious long long ago , Covid a once in a lifetime opportunity . Overall that's a great thing , opportunity for a more diverse hub , and really so much more than some skanky bars , that really do bring down a critical area .

Sex tourists , overall ..goodbye , that's a good thing ,  better for all , far far more to Pattaya , was always going to happen .
