  1. Hi,

I have looked everywhere in Thailand for styptic pencils but have always had to get them sent over from UK.

There is something here called "san som" and don't get it confused with "Sang Song" which is Thai rum.

"san som" is or are like rocks or crystals used for clearing water like a "flocculent."

If my swimming pool starts to go green with algae I use this stuff to clear it.

Anyway I buy this "san som" from the local DIY shop and it comes in small pieces in a plastic bag for 30 baht.

    Much cheaper than styptic pencils.

It works just the same and stings a little when used on a cut.

    Hope it works for you.

    Pete.

  2. Thankyou t o g  for your reply. You are correct when you say it's not an interview but just handing in the paperwork, it's been many years since I had the worry of doing the same.

As I said, it's the 4th. time my friend's GF as gone through this procedure but this time it' seems to be taking longer than before. I am sure you are right that they'll hear within the next few days but they cannot help being worried that the visa is being held up somewhere or that it may be stuck somewhere in the Thai post!

    Appreciate your reply, thanks.

  3. My friend, with my help applied for a visit visa to UK for his GF. Everything seemed to go through OK, payment etc. and on the 7th. of this month she went for her interview.

She was told to expect a reply within 10 days and was also given a number to use with Thai post to check whereabouts of reply letter.

This is the 4th. year they have applied for a visa, having had no problems before and the visa and passport arriving on time.

Obviously the visa has not yet arrived and my friend is getting worried because of the flight time getting closer. He has already changed his flight once!

We tried to access Thai post with the tracking number given but no luck as Thai post just came up with "PENDING"

What we would like to know is if there maybe a delay or backlog or something that is delaying the delivery of this pp/visa?

Looking at the receipt my friend has it seems he paid for a SMS also to be sent along with the cost of postage. Again no SMS has been received!

We would be grateful for any thoughts concerning this.

    Thanks in anticipation.

  4. In reply to JustAnotherFarang.

I bought a Honda GXV 160H2 almost 4 years ago.

It's the best mower I've ever had!

I also had a Briggs and Stratton and although I used it for nearly 10 years it constantly broke down.

I also bought a Bosch electric which was actually made in UK by Suffolk Colt thinking because it's British it'll be a good'n!

    Wrong!

Back to the Honda, it sounds like the same model you're thinking of buying ( push model, not self propelled )

I bought it in Pattaya 10/10/2013 and it cost 12000 baht so maybe you should look at the mower shops before you order from Lazada!

  5. 73 replies and only one person has mentioned anything about what you are going to do here!

You may have only just retired in the UK so for most of your life you have been waking up every morning and going off to work. Now you are going to wake up and find you've got all day to do nothing!

There are things to do but not what you would probably be doing in the UK.

Golf is very popular but it is getting increasingly more expensive!

People walk and some ride bikes but it's not everyone's cup of tea!

For one thing the weather here is always hot! Not ideal for doing strenuous exercise unless you do it early morning or late afternoon. OK, you could join a gym! Gardening might be your pastime but things don't grow the same as UK and the temperature will not help your pleasure!

I'm trying to help you to realise that life here can be very boring and has forced some to take comfort in the bars!

I know I'm going to be shouted down for saying that by a lot of people but there's a lot who will realise that that's just what happens. As you get older you don't want anything strenuous ( keep the obvious out of it! ) so what do you do?

Life here is not all about meeting a nice lady you have to think of what to do instead of vegetating!

Before you get in too deep, take a few more holidays over here. Come at different times of the year and try to sort out what kind of life you would make for yourself! Many guys spend 6 months of the year here and 6 in the UK. I think that way ( give or take a couple of days ) you could still collect your full pension and keep your NHS rights etc.

Give it a little more time before you take the biggest step of your life!

  6. UPDATE: I Just went to do my 90 days report. Last 2 reports were done on line with no issue. I recently got a new passport and transferred my visa to the new book. Everything updated fine EXCEPT 90 days reporting. Seems the left hand is not talking to the right hand. In order to use the online 90 day report you must leave the country and return...or trot your happy ass to immigration every 90 days.

Side note regarding the bruhaha over a new form asking for all kinds of personal data. I filled out no such form and saw no one else filling anything extra either.

I renewed my PP in Feb. this year and did my 90 day at same time. ( Previously I had done online reporting for 3 or 4 times )

Because it was new PP I wasn't sure what paperwork I would need so asked and a guy copied 12 sheets out for me at the copier.

When I presented these at 90 day counter along with my PP they were handed straight back so what I want to know is do I need any paperwork for my 90 day as my details must be on the computer?

BTW I tried to do a 90day report this morning and although it allowed me to enter my details, I was then presented with a little note telling me to get details from Immigration!

    Thanks.

Quote of my reply to the post your quoted. "I have mentioned previousl getting a new passport requires a new entry to do online reports. The database is from entries and a immigration office cannot access it to do changes.

I have the same problem but have not bothered to do a border hop for a new entry."
It seems you have not completed the stamp transfer from your old to new passport. That is handled at a different desk than 90 day reporting.

I beg your pardon Joe but I DID transfer the stamp from my old PP to my new one! All these "quotes" and "multi quotes" can lead to misunderstanding but I can assure you I have done everything in compliance with immigration.

I even asked at the 90 day desk if I could do my next 90 day online and was told "Yes!"

Sorry for omitting that I had transferred the stamp!

  8. The whole thing's not needed anyway as you have to go in person to apply and collect the passport - it's needless busy work for the pen pushers.

Not sure that is strictly the case....http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/854355-uk-passport-renewals-thailand/#entry9828412

I used a Visa service so I did NOT have to travel to Bangkok either to take in my old passport for renewal or to pick up the new one when it arrived back!

Ok, the fee for the service was 5,000 baht but I thought that was worth it to save me 2 days of travelling into and out of the city along with the skytrain etc.

  9. As many people on here, everything is in my wifes name, so when it came to renewing my British passport last month I was unsure what to do about proof of address.

I know I could get a letter of residence from immigration but that would need translating and I try to avoid a trip to Jomtien if I can.

I do 90 day reporting online so when it comes to printing off your next appointment there is an option to print off the information you gave to immigration.

I printed this off ( it's in English ) and it was accepted by the passport office. Job done.

Sorry if I've duplicated someone elses post, thought it may help.

  10. There are conflicting posts here about whether you need a medical cert. or not!

Could someone who has renewed their 5 year licence recently please tell me if I need a medical certificate?

I already have a 5 year licence for car which expired on the 12th.

I want to renew this for a new 5 year licence.

    Thanks in anticipation!

  11. I appologise if this has been answered in the last 35 pages but could someone tell me how to print out ( or at least where to print out ) the form with the next due date for 90 day application after one has been approved?

I have received the approval email and printed off a form that contains my passport no. etc but there is nothing to tell me when my next application is needed! Ok, I can work out 90 days for myself but would like to print out the correct form.

    Thanks.

  12. Oh no what a disaster,I won't be able to watch Eastenders later.

try x speeds....all the uk soaps in sd and hd......

When you try to register with x speeds they ask for an invite number, what is this and how do I get it?

you need an invite from a member who has one to give away.....

Well, you're inviting everyone on here to try x speeds so do you have invites for us all ? Please!!

  13. Thanks innerspace but your fix did not work.

I changed the DNS server to Google 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 and it was working OK.

As I wasn't working or downloading anything I closed down my computer around 11.00pm.

When I opened up this morning about 06.15.... you guessed it....."Connecting through WAN mini port (PPPOE)" and

"Local area connection doesn't have a valid IP configuration Not fixed" was all I could get.

At 07.40 my computer connected to the internet!

I even tried another fix that I saw on Utube, change DNS to 208.67.222.222 but again it didn't work.

So I am certain that at 11.30 or thereabouts at night when the BTV guy finishes his shift, he turns out the lights and closes down my connection!

At around 07.30 next morning the BTV guy on day shift reports for duty and switches back on my connection.

What I want to know is Why? and how long will this go on for? but all we get when we call BTV is a dumb girl who doesn't know what day of the week it is and "engineers" who cannot be bothered to come out and fix it!!

  14. I've been using BTV for internet for well over 3 years and although they're not perfect have given reasonable service.

The last few weeks I've had many disconnections which I'm certain did not come from my equipment.

The only time their "engineers" came out they changed the power lead to the modem.

This stopped the daily dissconnections but the last 3 nights the internet has been switched off at around 11.30 to be reconnected at about 7.30 the next morning. It might have been happening before the 3 days but as I was away I cannot be certain.

So what is happening now is I'm getting good internet during the day but at approx. 11.30 at night my internet is cut off until about 7.30 next morning when it miraculously comes back on again. My troubleshooter just says " DNS server not responding."

I live next to Maprachan lake, a neighbour is getting the same problem. Is anyone else getting this problem and/or what do you think is the cause and the remedy?

  15. Last night, at about 10.30 pm. we had 2 or 3 short ( few seconds ) power cuts then a power outage lasting several hours. I don't know how long exactly because I went to bed. It had started raining at the time but didn't seem too bad.

What I'm getting at is these cuts seem to be always in this area, I don't suppose anywhere in town was affected!

Does anyone have any idea ( please! no posts about paying bills etc. ) why the area around the lake seems more prone to cuts than anywhere else?

It wasn't just last night, we seem to be getting short cutoffs more often now than anytime in the last 10 years, perhaps on average 1 or 2 per day.
