  1. Time to start packing... I sure don't want to be here if HE comes back. This man has an axe to grind.

The city and surrounding is suffering from floods and this is the government's priority?!?!

It has been this Governments priority number one, from day one!

They don´t give a f%#k about the ordinary hard working people of Thailand.

    And the other lot did?

  2. What took me years to understand about Thaksin supporters is, it is very criminality that they find so attractive about him. It's none of that Amartya / Prai rhetoric as you'd be hard pressed to find an anti-Thaksin person that wasn't also pro social and economic equality / justice. It's his pimp bankroll they love. They lo0ve the way he pushes people around and wish they could to. They're living vicariously through him as they rember back on their own failed lives. They think maybe some of that pimp money will fall out of his pocket and they'll get some too. I couldn't bring myself to believe that for years but it's all so obvious now.

Believe your all very WRONG on this one. Where were all these so-called idolators when Taksin was given the bum's rush? Out on the streets rioting/baying for the blood of the generals who were ordered to get shot of him? No. Most were relieved the whole Taksin as Caretaker Who Wouldn't Step Down debacle were pig sick of him.

But then, they saw that the alternative lot gave sod all about them too.

  3. I'm not exactly a fan of both sides and I think that bringing Thaksin back will not be in anyway beneficial to Thailand. It's a start of another crisis.

As a guest of the country and unable to vote I think it wise that Farangs should keep their views to themselves Big Brother is watching YOU !!!!

And here we go with the 'guest' thing again. After 20 years I'm still a guest huh? Not what we call those of differing nationalities in my home country. Can you imagine Abdul saying to Ravi, 'Always remember, we are guests here'.

Maybe you should follow your own paranoid advice and don't bother posting if you don't feel it right that we 'guests' should express an opinion. Or in your case, not.

  4. I once stepped into Modena's early evening a few months ago for some pasta (loathe pizza, all that dough) and asked for a glass of wine to accompany it. The strange looking owner insisted I buy a bottle, cheapest at 900 +. When I protested I was dining alone, he suggested I have a beer with it instead. Beer, with pasta! I left and never returned. I was the only customer too.

Well when you go to a place that says PIZZA on the sign out front and you order pasta...

The place advertises 'PIZZA' as you put it, but is clearly an Italian outfitted RESTAURANT. Have you ever been to an Italian RESTAURANT advertising 'pizza', presumably for the overweight pissheads on their way back from some bar or other, and NOT found it to have a menu which includes PASTA. To make it clear, a RESTAURANT, NOT a takeaway, many of which still include NON-PIZZA items on their menus.

    Your point?

  5. I don't find either of these companies on the web. Sounds like a scam.

It IS a scam. Little wonder many expatriates in Thailand complain about they're having been taken advantage of and losing their money. Do please do some research (Google is your friend) before your making a fool of yourself on an open forum.

  6. A tad off topic but it has to be said:

I've tried the pizzas at Nikita's, M&M's, Amalfi, Ellis (now closed) and without a doubt, the best pizzas in Rawai are from Modena on Sai Yuan Rd. Check it out.

Everytime I have driven past Modena in the evening it is empty. There seems to be one poster who always recommends Modena, is that you?

  7. a flood related article, many would be interested to know, how it use to be in the past and what might be future architectural designs.

the guy knows what he is proposing

I agree, a very interesting read and a refreshing change from the many threads covering more or less the same topics/political point scoring.

Bangkok was once known as the Venice of the East and I for one would like to see a modern day version of that architectural model.

Living with nature as opposed to constantly attempting to fight it, as any homeowner here knows, is an ongoing and futile battle.

There is a substantial plot of land close to my house which is in a basin. The land has always had a very large 'pond'. The landowner has, for at least the past 5 years I have lived here, attempted to fill the pond in order to build a housing development. This year he's to be seen every day with a very large and very old truck heaving truck fulls of dirt into the pond, regardless of the many small rivulets filling it up again. Can you imagine the mess any construction would be after just one monsoon season? This fool doesn't see that. Just the baht he thinks he'll make.

  8. I think you're right - if the diagnosis is simple, you'll receive first class care in any of the hospitals.

The situation changes when the problem is more unusual.

I always go to the Phuket Bangkok as one doesn't have to hang around so long to see someone - but....a) they are the most expensive hospital on the island B) they didn't do a terribly good job on the one occasion I needed an op (it needs to be done again....) and c) I gather that the 'top' consultants/surgeons 'visit' from the Vachira to earn extra money.

I believe you've been misinformed. There's absolutely nothing wrong with the consultants and surgeons at the Vachira. They don't operate at the private hospitals to earn 'extra money'. It's the other way around insofar as that they are obliged to put time in at government hospitals as part of their having received their training from government run universities.

This applies all over Thailand and in many other countries, including the UK.

  9. Have you considered the private clinic of Vachira?

A german orthopeadic surgeon is my consultant for my herniated disks there and thats where i do my tractions every other day,fee 120 baht per traction, consultation 80 baht first time then free. I dont know if you consider this private, i think they call it outpatient, call and ask for Sarina 0876217787 for more info fluent english very helpfull.if you dont like waitting 30mn for your turn then its not your cup of tea, this applies for my skin derma post as well.

Whereabouts is the Private Clinic in the Vachira Hospital? The locals refer to the Vachira Government Hospital as The Slaughterhouse, so wouldn't mind paying a few extra baht for an upgrade. The Bangkok International is a Mill.

  10. PM shuns emergency decree imposition for fear that it will hurt foreign confidence; urges all parties to unit, fight against floods /MCOT

foreign confidence already submegred in meters of Thai water. what is the NEXT priority ?

Hurt foreign confidence? Of course we must first think about what "foreigners" might think before we take any action to protect our citizens who are dying and losing everything. Is this woman for real? Unbelievable she would make this statement pubicly.

It will hurt foreign confidence in the same way that the neglecting of any warning of the tsunami would have hurt foreign tourism, but have saved thousands of lives. It seems money really is God here.

  11. Anyone know the address for lodging a complaint against a Thai lawyer? Not mine, but lodging complaints is, strangely enough, effective. I know of at least one who is now blacklisted. Less of the many dodgy types here the better, in my view.

    Anyone?

    Thank you.smile.gif

  12. I've a friend who has asked me the best place to sell his silver Rama V amulet, I suggested Ta Pra Chan in Bangkok, although remember having an amulet evaluated at a large department store in the Paruhat area some time ago.

He's been assured it is genuine and told 'too expensive' by potential buyers in his home town.

I know this isn't strictly Bhuddism related, but did I give him the correct advice? I did advise him to ask a trusted Thai to accompany him. He looked apprehensive.

  13. Yes, it is true. You can bypass the police and file a private criminal action.

Thank you. That is what I have been told by two eminent lawyers here. But overly cautious and doesn't take long to post a question on an expat forum in order to gather answers from one's compatriot expats. So the buggers would be wasting their money if this were to happen then. Good.

    Thanks to again.

  14. There probably have been cases where the police have been paid a sum of monies in order to ensure that a criminal action runs more smoothly against an accused while the case is pending. For example, that the defendant is not put in jail while awaiting trial or the police report is written more favourably for the accused and so on.

But in all criminal cases, when a defendant is charged in Thailand, or sometimes even if the defendant has not been charged, the ultimate decision whether or not the case goes to court is left at the discretion of the Prosecutor.

I have heard stories that once the police have concluded their investigations, that prosecutors have discretely asked for bribe money so as to sway his/her decision not to place a defendant in jail and proceed the case to court.

It is worth keeping in mind that the police and the law authorities in Thailand have draconian powers and beware of falling under the mercies of the long arm of the law.

If in Thailand, do not become involved with anything shady, keep within the law, enjoy and live in peace here.

    Thank you for your response.

Your assertion that 'I have heard some stories that once the police have concluded their investigations, that prosecutors have discretely asked for bribe money so as to sway his/her decision not to place a defendant in jail and proceed the case to court' does not pertain to my .case - the Judge suggested this particular line of action. I am therefore unconcerned regarding Court Procedure. Please re-read 'header'. As to your penultimate paragraph. I am not the Offender (your previous para/line intimating I might be).

I had been informed by my Embassy that there are a lot of 'farang' in Thai jails (and not just for drugs). Therefore, seemingly the old chestnut about farang being able to get out of whatever criminal action took, a myth. Of course there are some who are able to buy their way out of a drug,theft/murder cases in certain areas and with certain officials, but that is on the decline.

Anyone with a relevant answer to my question? There was a recent thread on court procedure, but cannot find. I have a lawyer but want to check everything that comes out of anyone's mouth here, Thai and farang. Stop 'rolling over' for G*ds sake. I've lived in many countries and have yet to find an apathetic expat 'community' as here in Thailand.

PS Not joking about Thai Legal System forum on this site. Bearing in mind, for ever 10 lawyers asked, 10 different answers will be given. Never mind misinformation, I'm sure those interested will be able to discern the chaff from the wheat.

  15. I've been told that if a police officer accepts a bribe to not press charges against persons having committed a crime, particularly concerning a very serious case, the case file could then be lodged directly with the local Prosecutor's Office. Is this true?

Not sure this the right forum, mods please feel free to move if not. I couldn't see one relating to 'Thai Legal Issues'. Although suspect it would be overflowing leading to breakdown of server.
