  1. I'm very surprised at the lack of reporting of this incident so far by the Phuket Gazette, and both of the on line editions of the main English language Thai newspapers. This is particularly odd given the extensive coverage that it's already received in the Australian media.

I'm not. Remembering the embarrassment that was their two week silence following the tsunami.

i was told by a Thai neighbour 15 years ago that these types of crimes were very prevalent but were always hushed up so as not to deter tourists.

Fact is, if the police would just once come out and admit to a crime having been perpetrated by a local on a tourist/expat instead of these ridiculous cover ups, people would have more confidence visiting/living here. It would show 'accountability'. Anathema to the Thai mindset.

  2. Why is it that many posts degenerate into petty bickering & the protagonists are generally the same few people. Some really good posts often get locked because of this.

The corruption here is pervasive, in your face if you care to take off the blinkers but we can only comment as there is really no recourse to any authority unless perhaps the ombudsman. Even if he finds a case that has grounds who will dare take it to prosecution? So we learn to accept it exists, try to avoid it as much as we can & get on with enjoying all the good things which attracted us here.

Or The Office Of The Attorney General in Bangkok.
  3. Oh, and Iceman, I presume you are responding to me, because you do that all the time. Don't bother though, you're on my ignorelist so I can't see your posts anymore. And I must say, ever since you're on that list I am a much happier poster here tongue.png .

Please point me to this feature. lol

Click on your name at the top, go to 'manage ignore prefs'.

Oh, HKP, sorry, you did not make it to my ignore list, which consist of only one poster at the moment. I presume he is honored by that smile.png

I'm sure whomsoever it is would be very upset at not having the opportunity to engage with your sagacity on this forum. Cue passive/aggressive smiley smile.png
  4. "Cynics tend to portray official corruption as an everyday fact of life on the island. The reality, however, is that very few law-abiding people suffer at the hands of corrupt officials on a regular basis."

I have never suffered at the hands of corrupt officials, even stronger, I have never paid any official anything that was not an official payment.

That's just it, none of the people who harp on about it ever have, and the vast majority of them aren't business owners like yourself either, just people sitting on a bar stool moaning about corruption for the lack of anything better to talk about.

P.S Did you see this post? I hope I'm not on your ignore list as well? sad.png As one of the very few voices of logic and reason on here, the rejection of being ignored by you would be too much, I would have to leave the forum for good. tongue.png

Phuket is pretty much run by a corrupt regime of families and authorities, and the way they are administering tourism here is unsustainable by global tourism destination standards. It is most evident in the laughable transport system here.

As I always ask you 'NKM' when is this unsustainability due to start. Over 12 years of visiting and living in Phuket I'm yet to see any signs of it.

You don't get out much, do you. Quite possibly evidenced by your daily long winded posts.
  5. This is absolute BS that the Thai Police are already telling everyone that this is food poisoning without the benefit of an autopsy . What the hell is the rush, an autopsy can clarify things, it only takes an extra couple of days instead "Barny Fife" has already muddy the waters. What is it about Thai Police and Politicians that always want to spout out unrealistic BS.

I once used a 'taxi' outside Big C. The driver was making conversation and flashed his 'Forensic Police' card and told me this was his 'other job'. Seriously. You expect reliable forensics, here?

  6. Pufferfish poison can quickly lead to paralysis, and I'm sure there are more poisons found in food that can have the same effect. So food poisoning can be a very reasonable explanation.

Bullshit. So you're a toxicologist too now? What about the other symptoms? And as a previous poster pointed out, is it likely they were the only two customers of any restaurant to die afterwards.

Here's a news for ya. Poisoning very prevalent in LOS. Ask your wife.

And by the way. As a lone poster pointed out on the initial thread. What, if anything, are the irrelevant embassies doing about all this? The very least would be expected is a proper, independent forensics/autopsy report on this spate of bizarre deaths.

  7. Humbug! This is a ridiculous "solution" to a minor problem. Kratom (mitragynine) is a relatively harmless drug that has several useful medicinal properties. As a recreational drug, at low doses it is mildly stimulant while at higher doses it is mildly narcotic. It enables people to do hard physical labour and then to "chill" afterwards. It has few side effects, produces no hangover and is rarely addictive unless used to excess. What kind of legislation entirely outlaws a naturally occurring plant?

Thanks for the info thumbsup.gif Now where did I put that book on the Flora And Fauna of Thailand ...
  8. I like fish and chips and when I useta go to the local chippie in Brighton run by chinese I would observe closely and ask 'whaddaya put in the batter?' and the old chinese guy would say 'very simple' and go about his business...inscrutable asian nonsense...but the fish sure tasted good...

now, I've tried it at home and either too fluffy like tempura or soggy as shit and I gave up as it makes a huge mess to clean up after...snapper is a good substitute for cod btw...in the Gulf area of the ME they use a local variety called hamour and it is excellent...

but hooray for those that experiment locally in Thailand in their kitchens with available ingredients and all power to them!

I always used Chinese chippies in the UK. They fry in light vegetable oil, not the heavy rancid lard the Brits use. Light and fluffy batter not heavy soggy mush.
  9. Am I the only person who thinks it is very strange that so many tourists die in Thailand?

I have not kept a count but we are certainly talking of dozens of deaths this year already, some accidents, some murders, many not fully explained or in very dubious circumstances. From the description of the room these 2 poor girls suffered a nasty end, we can only hope the police do a proper job of the forensics and investigation.

It really is beyond comprehension why proper autopsies weren't performed on the previous two women. It's not as though adequate forensics aren't available. And if the local police weren't capable of determining the cause of death, then outside assistance should have been asked for. These are peoples' lives <deleted>.

On a side note, I'm surprised to see this has even been reported. Phuket's rep for suicides both obvious and 'suspicious', has gained such notoriety no one's even reporting them now. As per a young Swiss female teacher in a nearby soi a few weeks back. Not a word of it anywhere in the press. Are the Thais reverting to the old 'if it wasn't seen it didn't happen' line?

  10. Wait.wait.wait.

You are seriously saying that dropping the booze buying times is more important than free education.

hahahahahaha wonderful thanks for the laugh. Have another beer blink.png

Sent from my GT-P1010 using Thaivisa Connect App

    read my posting again......

It would have had a bigger impact on the election. Means for the normal Somchai it would have been a bigger topic.....

Nonsense. The average 'Somchai' buys his booze from the local m&p shops, as do Itongue.png And I rarely see some saleng driver loading up at Villa Market, which does sell booze all day, their obviously having paid the bung.
  11. Your wife is wrong (as are so many posters' wives are but the farang husbands seem to believe they are the fount of all knowledge/wisdom here, ...) Many people in their own countries are ignorant of resources available to them and exactly the same applies here.

There was very recently a Thai TV campaign against domestic violence, and so it is most certainly not 'Thai culture'. 'Kreng jai' comes into it. But that's just another word for cowardly inaction.

As to the dog, believe it or not you can lodge a complaint with the relevant department, I believe it comes under 'Livestock', but your local government office will give you the relevant department. This is a FACT as advised to me when I could no longer stand the sadistic abuse of a farang neighbour and his Thai wife directed towards their two dogs.

As to the wife beating, that is as difficult but, no more, no less, than in your home country. The complaint must be lodged by the victim. These 'domestics' are notoriously difficult as the woman will usually back down and withdraw the complaint. I remember reading somewhere that there is an agency/agencies for the victims of domestic abuse in Bangkok. Women's Welfare Foundation or some such. Perhaps a note with the relevant address slipped to the wife might help. Then it really is up to her.

Don't believe everything you read on here regarding this being the wild wild East. Most posters hardly ever come into contact with that side of life here, outside their own countries. And good for you for sticking up for your weaker neighbours.

  12. It is true that a girl from a not-poor background is incrementally less likely to be desperate about being dumped by her teerak, and perhaps even less likely to suffer from the mental illnesses common among mia farang.

And there we have it. Little johnny bangkok seems to be one of the many 'well yeah, me wife in the uk/us wherethehellever, took me for all I 'ad' brigade.

Eh. Put the beer down and start again. smile.png

    It's 'whine' actually tongue.png

If you changed that to 'Took me for more than she deserved' then many of us would admit to membership of that particular club.

If they'ad taken us for all we had ...... we wouldn't be here, now would we.

Vry salient fact. Perhaps you could point that out to the next boring bastard who sidles up to you for a chat in your local beerbar.

  14. Really. did anyone expect any other outcome than this from the election of Taksin's proxy.

And before anyone starts jumping up and down re yellow/red, I sincerely urge them to read an article headed 'Proving Plato Wrong' in The Other Paper. As cogent a summation as to why any view of european democracy continues to confound eurocentric perspecives of such 'democracy', ever being applied here any time soon.

  16. I think most men wouldn't have sex with a prostitute even if it was free.

I agree this might be true in repressed societies dominated by outdated religous mores, especially Judeo-Christian and Muslim ones.

But certainly not true if you're talking about "most men" as in globally, and certainly not the case for Thais. Assuming she's young and attractive of course.

Many cultures would actually think a woman just giving herself away to strangers for free is much worthier of contempt than a decent prostitute.

And yet again the stupidity/self denial of the Thailand monger raises it's 'larger' [sic] head.

In The Rest Of The World, most men do not use prostitutes. The only reason there are a disproportionate amount of men who do HERE, is that Thailand is THE brothel of the world and you simply can't get 'any', any other way.

Your implication that the rest of the world's women are, and I quote 'giving it away for free' suggests you too are one of those sad sacks who are labouring under the delusion that 'Well, farang women jus' don' realise they're not utilising their moneymakers an' tha's why they fin' me so repugnant, nuffin' to do with my attitude/looks/age'. So you must come here to have a cat's chance to ever get your end away. F.A.C.T.

  17. But every visitor I've had has remarked 'Thailand, a third world country with first world prices'.

    Tourists always pay more.

Stupid remark. How do the Thais who are tourists and who aren't? I know for a fact that I will very often be asked a higher price if I wander outside my usual shopping areas.
  18. It definitely costs me more to live here than in the US, though I do know a lot of farangs who live on a fraction of what I could live on in either place and seem to be perfectly happy.

I agree. Why it appears to be cheaper is that those of us who live here aren't subject to taxes and generally live in homes we've already bought or reasonably economical rentals. And of course lifestyles come into the equation same as everywhere else in the world. The phrase 'cutting your coat according to your cloth' spring to mind. But every visitor I've had has remarked 'Thailand, a third world country with first world prices'.
  19. This story reeks of a fit up. I've had bleach and bathroom cleaner on my skin many times and never had these kinds of issues.

The very popular and widely available Draga brand (pink bottle) of 'toilet/bathroom' cleaner contains hydrochloric acid, or gok glua, as it's known to the locals. Try getting some of that on your skin.
  20. Well it seems once again the 'bend over and take it we are guests in this country blah blah' or the simply 'I can see no problem with it' (so why bother posting then?) brigade have been in the majority here. The excuse that 'Well, maybe the poor darlings can't speak English and we don't want to embarrass them' line is utter codswallop. Most Thais find it difficult to string a sentence in English (or would you prefer I refer to it as 'passa farang'), so that's that one out the window.

Has anyone bothered to ask this shop owner why he/she is not welcoming any other custom other than Thai?

  21. by the way silsburyhill (great pete gabriel song by the way), i like the name 'old neverbeens', can we use it?

Silsbury Hill? Great song, but it's called Solsbury Hill which is in Somerset and where he claimed to have a "spiritual experience". It's also supposedly about his split from Genesis.

Seems like one member has misspelled his TV name. Doh!

Firstly, you ASSume my nik is named for SILBURY HILL (sic) (it's not), And it's 'SOLSBURY Hill'. Double Doh laugh.png

What was that you said? Oh, no problem old chap, apology accepted.
