  1. I see it is pretty strait forward to do the permission to stay and the conversion to long stay under retirement. But I was looking at the O visa and it said multi entry is good for 1 year great but....It said only 90 stay at a time.Does that mean on this visa you have to leave Thailand every 90 days and then re enter? I thought it would be a retirement visa that you just have to report to local immigration every 90 days.Clarification of this would be helpful.

  2. Entering Thailand on an expired Thai passport will not be a problem.Immigration sees this all the time.Leaving the US on an expired passport wont happen Thai or US.The problem with trying to use the US passport to leave the US to go to Thailand with a stay of over 30 days the airline will not let you board the plane with out a visa. Our daughter did not have a visa in her US passport and the return ticket was for 2 1/2 months later. She was traveling with her Thai mother I was to follow later.Delta airlines would not let her board,oh she was only 3 years old at the time. She has a Thai passport also.So we gave Delta her Thai passport and said use this. They gave us a funny look but she got on the plane. She entered Thailand with her Thai passport and when she left 2 1/2 months later she left with her US passport due to no Visa in the Thai passport for the US.Thai Immigration wanted to know why no stamp in to Thailand in US passport. We explained what happened in US and showed Thai passport and they said not to do again but let her travel to US with no overstay due to she is Thai.

  3. The wife and daughter going to Thailand for 60 days. Both Thai with US citizenship. Both have Thai and US passports. Tried to board Delta with no visa with US passport. NO CAN DO they say.Have to have visa due to round trip longer then 30 days. Ahhh take back US passport hand over Thai passport. You can now travel to Thailand she said with a VERY sour face. Do not try to travel without the visa if round trip longer then 30 days you will be sorry.

  4. Lots of Thais play the underground lottery where you pick 2 or 3 numbers and you win if they correspond with the last 2 or 3 numbers from the Government Lottery.

They play that because even if the numbers are in a different order you still win. However they still play the Government Lottery for the potential higher returns.

I believe a win pays about 8k for 2 numbers and 40k for 3. It's the Thai equivalent of bingo. It's illegal of course but seems to be tolerated because it's only small sums involved.

Football gambling is highly illegal where larger sums are involved and it is more addictive due to the potential frequency of betting.

Yes this is true.BUT try to get your money when you win big.Never will understand the wifes oldest sister. She plays the numbers and wins they refuse to pay her then she will still play with the same people .Go figure that one out.

  5. Thanks for the replies. He came over to our house and I later asked him outside with a drink in hand and we had a chat.

He speaks ok English and I think he managed to understand that he has been annoying me. He told me that he did not have intent to cause this problem. I asked him to basically modify his behaviour and stop telling me what to do. Actually as soon as he arrived he did the usual giving advice and giving us tips about the house. My wife and I looked at each other.... He is one of these annoying guys who think that they know everything and offer advice even if the recipient does not ask. Will see how it goes in the future.

He is giving you Tips about the house ??? Alarm bells must start ringing by now. Could it be that the "brother" intends to live in the finished house and not you? Before you lay another brick, you must find out about the status of the brother within the family.

Unless you are fluent in Thai, you need outside help. Best way would be to engage a Farang friend and his THAI-WIFE (in no way related or otherwise connected to the family in question). I am sure she could discreetly provide relevant facts in no time at all.

    Cheers.

Find the blue book for the parents home and see who has lived there and which ones are the brothers and sisters. It is a running recored of who lived in the parents home in the past and present. That should give you the names of all brothers and sisters of your wife.If they did live with the parents.Do not confront the guy in front of other people.Losing face for him would probably not be a good thing for you.Like someone else said is he really a brother or old /ongoing boyfriend?

  6. Something that I have noticed in rural Issan. Is how people in the mo ban share much of things, food, labor. If they get their rice cut by machine they pay cash for it.But if by hand sometimes it is an agreement ,I cut your rice you cut mine. There really is a barter system for labor that cuts down on the need for money some times. But ask for a ride some where and expect to pay for the fuel and some times their time.Even if they are your sister brother, relitive.

  7. Oldest brother in law lives in nice Thai country style wood home.Farms rice and works odd jobs to make some more money.Has a motorcy,tv,radio. Typical rural Thai rice farmer. Two adult daughters and one teen boy.One is local teacher lives at home.Other works in the travel industry for a large hotel group, not at home.Lives on about 50,000 thb a year.Anything extra, travel, eat out at a real resturant and such is a treat from his daughters.Seems to be happy with his and wifes life.Just what you are a coustom to.

  8. i take it some of you guys got burnt in these process im sorry to hear that . but im only looking for information not your negativity or hardship

stories . as we have a few properties in bkk and pattya we were looking for something to get away from the city once in a while . as to my wife's family they all have good jobs and over the last 10 years have never asked me or my wife for anything .

thank you, so if were finished we the sad poor me shit id like to get back onto the topic i posted

come on im.10yrs.in Thailand with properties in bkk.and pattaya and your asking for advice for builders,if you search the building forums for isaan you will see that one who comes recommended is ALAN THE BUILDER.

oh as you mention the poor me shit, thats not me,,as for a property yes I live in a very nice 5bed.house,with my wife of 25yrs.and my beloved dog as for getting burnt I did once when my leg touched the exaust pipe on the bike,oh and not forgetting the new car. is any of it mine NO ITS NOT.

but as you say ITS ONLY POCKET MONEY yes but it came out of mine.

Have no direct knolwedge with alan the builder. But it does seem to be a great builder. With that said it is of the HIGH end for price and size of build.I have heard they have no interest in low price or small builds. They are very selective of the builds they do.As the wife say "up to you"Yes I know not much help.Have known many people in different parts of Thailand and most have been happy with the "local"builder. You are doing the right thing to just ask ask and ask local people and to see thier build.I think that is the best way.Try c--ltha-h-use.c-m understand?

  9. This is very hard to say if it means just one thing,but.....Let's say you wear shorts and a cheap shirt all of the time. One day you wear nice pants and a great shirt and you look very handsom. You look "over the top" โพดโพ เนาะ อ้า เจ้า .Ok Another way to understand would be....You go fishing and you always catch one or two fish and they are small.Well today you catch many fish and they are BIG You look "over the top"โพดโพ เนาะ อ้า เจ้า.Very hard to say just a way to clarifiy something. Ok another way would be....You have an old "car" but today you show up with a new "car".People would say โพดโพ เนาะ อ้า เจ้า .WOW what happened you have new "car"!!!! As you can see it does not mean just yes or no.I guess you could say it is a way of Esarn language to say you have bettered yourself in that sitution.Understand?

  10. Was wondering if anyone knows the temperature of the water by where the eating utensils are in some food courts.Does not seem to be at a high enough temperature to sterilize. The water that some people put their chop sticks, spoons or what ever in to make sure they are clean.I do not dip my utensils in it because I feel it would do nothing except add germs to them. What about you, do you dip?Is the real question.

  11. Yeah, I remember this thread from before. I think what you did sounds alright. 5k isn't an insane amount, especially if you are seriously interested in the girl. nice gesture.

Really, I find you can't win either way in the short run. If you spend a bunch, you will be an ATM; if you don't spend anything, you will be "ki niao." So, I don't pay much attention to that junk.

Now just realize that, even though I think your 5k gift was fine, what others are saying is true. You are expected to set limits when it comes to money--NOBODY ELSE WILL DO IT FOR YOU. They will take and take and take. I have seen it between Thais. People are just always on take mode, but in the village it mostly turns out to balance out (although some take more than they give, for sure). Since you are a foreigner, you are definitely seen as having more to give.

Anyway, here is a suggestion: next trip, stop by spend regularly and then NO GIFT at the end, or like 500 for mom and 500 for dad. See how that goes down. Don't make a thing of it, but try it. You will get some idea of how they will adjust.

Honestly, my wife and family will spend whatever you give them. It is an endless, gaping maw of need. My wife even knows it and gives me what she earns and lets me divvy it out to her as needed (I keep it separate from my money).

I figured it out, though, several years ago when my wife was talking to me about finances and said "I know you would never let us run out of money." After some clarification, it turned out that she meant that she trusted me to use the money appropriately--even if it meant saying "no" to her or her family.

This will sound bad, but many Thai ladies are like that. They like to spend their husbands' money, but they also expect the husband to manage the money. You lay down the law. Say no when it is overboard. Say yes when you want to and it is reasonable.

I still give money to my in-law (the parents) and sometimes to brothers and cousins and nephews, but I don't feel bad if I can't (or don't want to) and they recognize that and don't make trouble about it.

    Set boundaries.....sorry, rambling over.

I agree with you. This seems to be how I have seen it.

  12. 1. Dig big hole in ground.

    2. Fill up with water.

    3. Throw in a few hundred talipa.

    4. Feed them now and then, although you don't really need to they just grow slower if you don't.

    5. Wait a few weeks.

    6. Catch them.

    7. Profit.

    Super deluxe method:

3a - Throw in a few hundred catfish, they eat the talipa crap.

    Wholesale option:

    Sell the fish.

    Vertical market option:

Get the Mrs to BBQ them and sell them outside the house along with sticky rice.

The problem with this is that there is always the fish thiefs. They see the fish as anyones fish if you are not around.Seen many people with that problem.

  13. If the mouth is on fire from chile just put a teaspoon or two of sugar in the mouth and slowly swirl it around until gone.So is the fire.Water just spreads the capson around and makes it worse,so does beer.Milk based products also cool the heat.

  14. If you pay upfront then its like winning the lottery to them. The wife learnt after a couple of events if you pay them first then only half the job is done and they disappear. Lesson learnt is never pay them the full amount until the job is done. I have found thais never clean up after a job. Anything ie. building materials, drink containers, cigarette butts, that is discarded, cut off or not used will be just left lying on the ground next to the job.

    About right.
