I am allergic to cats, pollen, dust.. but have been treated since my childhood, so it's almost nothing, I take a Zyrtec (Cetirizine) pill when symptomatic (respiratory difficulties - sneezing)

Occasionnally ice cream, strawberries. beer ..can cause me itching,  and  then I take Telfast (Fexofenadine)

Interesting. So for you Fexofenadine works better for itching?

  2. Hey

It might be a stretch but I wonder if anyone who has allergies, could recognise whats going on. So I have had allergies since kid and had allergy skin tests done and they show that I am allergic to cats, dogs, hazelnut, birch and parsnip. So since I am from Europe and now stuck here, my face is red from cheeks and forehead and It also gets swollen and flaky (like atopic skin). So the mysterious part is that when I am in Asia, those issues are gone. Only things which differ are the diet and humidity+sun. Since back at home, I eat "normal" european/western food and in Asia, mostly thai food. Weird thing is that whatever I change in my diet, I cannot get anything ruled out and antihistamines do not help (tried several presciption meds). The allergy tests have been quite extensive and my first guess was flours but they do not register on the test.

    So anyone else experienced same?

  3. I guess I could chime in with my BP stuff. 42yo and merely few kg's over the limit of healthy weight (181cm/86kg), so the statistical limit to healty weight is about 82kg with my height. I've always had almost perfect 120/80 BP but I had few years when not measuring at all since old device broke down, so about a year ago I bought new and readings were 160/110 at highest, had dizziness and felt "hot".

I've had all the blood works done, including liver, pancreas, cholesterol +more, also two ECG and 24hours Holter ECG, Ultrasound of organs since sometimes I feel bloated and heart skips a beat and immediately burp after. Only things what comes up in ECG is LAFB which means that one of six wires/nerves in heart is not functioning, which itself is not big issue but with high BP its more complicated... From the blood works the LDL cholesterol is 3.5 mmol/l which is over the limit of 3.0 which combined with HDL 1.6 pushes the total cholesterol over the limit of 5, to 5.6. Also the mineral balance is bit off but within the limits, meaning that potassium is perfect but natrium is bit higher but still within the limits (this imbalance should not exist since they are almost every time in sync).

I am currently on third different BP meds (first ACE2 blocker gave cough, second ARB did not lower enough) which is Candesartan/Hydrochlorothiazide combinations which means that it's ARB/Diuretic and with that I get readings of 115-120/85-90. That means IDH, Isolated diastolic hypertension.

What my plan is now is to cut down drinking (now 1-3 a day, couple off days weekly, only beer or wine, no hard liquors), drop the few kg's and reduce salt. It wont fix the heart defect but cardiologists say that it should not affect the BP I have. Still the anomaly of IDH worries me.

Edit: just did few measurements and average of those were 126/90 and HR67

  4. "HEY".....

have you ever heard of airbnb, roomorama and the likes ? where you can find hundreds of places like the one you are looking for ?

If not, I am sure you have heard of our beloved uncle GOOGLE who is eager to share his knowledge at any given minute.....

5555. The airbnb price point is about the same as hotels. From google, most of the sites are offering long term rentals (don't worry, I have contacted many of them).

Have you heard about internet forums where people might have extra apartment for short periods and wont be putting it listed in any services? Some forums might have specific area like "Thailand Accommodation Finding Forum" (hint: your browsing it).

  5. Hey

I am intending to find supplier for silk yarn but it's difficult to find company which could provide me small sample (less than 5kg) with me to take back. The provider/pricing should towards export business, not night bazaar pricing for farangs. Does anyone have idea or knowledge of thai company, where I could visit and examine the yarn and then buy small sample? Later on I will buy as exported larger amounts. I am mostly in Bangkok now. Thanks!

  6. I must be a weirdo. I don't fancy thai women as partners. The looks are not into my taste, I like taller, independent and bit more "educated/word view/conversational" women. Ok, I have to admit I don't currently live in bangkok but I am now there again, third time this year. I like the country, food, athmosphere and Bangkok never stops to amaze me (I photograph). So on my travels, I have been hoping to meet farang women to share time etc. Couple times it has happened and I have enjoyed it much. Issue is that LOS is kind of a country where it's just beneficial to have thai woman who knows the hurdles and speaks the language.

Having a Thai person (regardless of their or your gender) who helps you navigate thinsg is of course easier but in the long run may prevent you from developing the language and other skills which would let you navigate it on your own, at least under normal circumstances. I am constantly astounded by the degree of dependency some expat men have on their Thai wives/gfs. Not all, of course, but a good number. To the point that they literally cannot function on their own. In addition to other drawbacks this means that one's understanding of Thailand is totally filtered through one person's viewpoint.

You are totally right about the lack of independency of some farang men. I think those guys won't explore around much either. There are people who like to experience as much as possible and learn the culture etc. then there are the men who need woman and things associated around her.

  8. Thanks for all the input you have been giving. The budget of 42k is not strict but I need to set some realistic base level. What comes about activities and such, thats the issue cause I dont know the CM that well. I get the impression that it will be boring for someone at my age?

  9. "Not to go too much into details, I eat Thai food, drink some what but not binge drinking and need internet for working. Biggest issue is anyway the rent which I hope to be condo with gym/pool(maybe)".

OP - 42,000 Baht will be a doddle, but don't forget to budget in health costs.

Take dolly's advice and stay somewhere convenient to transport.

Lots of people will try to scare you into thinking its not enough......they probably booze a lot, like the chick (or guy) bars nightly and are frightened to try and eat anything other than mum used to cook, which means western restaurants.

You Sir, got it right. Thanks for the advice that 42k should be enough. The biggest thing is that I need to establish new friends and life there. I will be looking for daily gym, socializing and enjoying my life. Luckily I like thai food a lot. Surely booze is nice occasionally but it is not an "issue" for me. Health and expenses are more important than getting wasted 24/7 in LOS.

I will be there max 3 months at first due thats the time my travel insurance covers my health costs, not to mention I need to renew the visa too, couple visa runs and insurance reset at back home. Then I think I know whether I like CM or BKK more.

  10. I need to clarify my post. I have budgeted about 42k but I know it could take more at first and maybe be lower at later on. Rental options and pricing is max 10k which I said could be max in BKK too but there it would be more of a compromise around everything.

As on poster said he does not understand the "problem". There is no problem per se but I am more or less looking peoples experiences around different accommodation options.

  11. Hey there,

I have been traveling thailand and SEA extensively but rarely live there longer than 1-2 months. I have now situation (36 single male) that I will be moving to LOS for longer and my options are BKK or CM. I have never been to CM but I have seen so much comments about the laid back mentality, cheaper prices, cooler climate and etc. However I know BKK to some extent and like the place, costs, climate and future expat friends might drive me to CM.

The question is that what can I get with 10k thb rent in CM? I know that with 10k in BKK it will be hard to get condo near BTS/MRT. It can be cheaper in CM of course. Since I don't know the city, I presume I have to locate near the center and renting scooter is almost necessary. I have been thinking overall budget with all costs in month about 42k thb +- 10k after settling down. Not to go too much into details, I eat thai food, drink some what but not binge drinking and need internet for working. Biggest issue is anyway the rent which I hope to be condo with gym/pool(maybe).

  12. The last time I had allergy testing done in the US eight years ago it involved making a series of scratches on my back, each one containing a different substance. The scratches were painless and were made in rows, in total about 90 scratches. I went away and came back two days later to see which scratch had flared and this was corelated back to the application map to determine which substance caused the reaction.

So ~in Thailand hey use a machine to do all this, isn't technology simply amazing these days!

But more seriously: I would recommend the OP to go and consult with a good gastroenterologist to discuss the reasons and symptoms of why he/she feels he/she is allergic to some type of food. Food and and allergies to it fall into different groups. lactose refers top all dairy products, gluten to all wheat based products, allergies to both are not uncommon. But symptoms such as excessive gas, bloating, dihorea may not have anything to do with food intolerance hence visiting an expert on the gut is a better way forward, I think, chance are that visiting one of these food intolerance testing centers will prove expensive and unhelpful.

Those scratches are called "prick" test (not kidding, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skin_allergy_test). IGG test can be done from blood sample and that is what I am interested. Surely results can vary but you can find out over 200 different allergy risks.

  13. To OP, does she have any relatives or friends who you could talk to? Third person, who knows her might be best first option before rushing the white coats in. Describe the issue to this person and try to get him/her to "spy" wether it's mental or just you.
