  1. If you are living in a 'private' apartment block, the charges can start hitting the roof - depending on how you get on with the owner/landlord. There are literally thousands of private rentals around that will only charge government rates.

For example, a 3 bedroomed house in Bangkok will/can work out way cheaper than an apartment!

I live out in the sticks ..... have a 3 bedroomed house, 3 bathrooms, living room, kitchen, huge garden etc and I pay B7,000 a month. Utilities come to less than 3k ..... normal rates.

BKK apartments are a total rip off .....electric/water/UBC etc per unit are silly prices!

If you are addicted to the BKK nightlife, you have to pay for it. Once you get over that barrier, your costs will come way down!

  2. I would have thought Bangkok would have the most road fatalities simply due to the numbers of people there.

Anyway, getting back on topic - best thing to do is come down, explore the area and see for yourself. It's not really a wise move to listen to what others say as we're all different. There is a huge difference between places in say, Chumphon, Phuket and Yala as examples.

To the OP, you don't really say what kind of things you're looking for, so we can't really help you without randomly guessing at what kind of person you are and as the poster above said, "your home is what you make of it."

  3. Almost impossible to rent a scooter.

Had eight inquires before lunch today.

    Sorry, all rented out.

Yesss, same in Lamai beach road. 10 days ago every shop full of bikes, this week zero.

I'm curious to see next week, the number of renting shops is clearly exagerated compared to the request.

According to the rent-a-bike-meter © in Lamai beach peak season is just 1 week, this morning any shops have a good selection of bike to rent.

Of course the excessive number of shops hoping to get back what they payed for the new bike could be the cause of the 1 week peak season. Same for too many restaurants, resorts, roads, buildings...too many of everything, Samui need to stop for say 5 years ... :)

Just 2 years ago it was impossible to find a table on end of year on any restaurant in central Beach road, this year before 7pm all nearly empty...

Still no bikes to rent out.

Only two customers turned down today.

Don't worry, you'll have them all back very soon. :D

  4. Found this today .....

A speed boat carrying eight Norwegian tourists to Koh Samui in Surat Thani capsized Monday afternoon and the tourists were safely rescued, police said.

The accident happened at about 2:50 pm when the boat was between Nakhon Si Thammarat's Khanom district and Surat Thani's Samui district.

The speed boat left the Don Sak pier heading to Samui and capsized apparently because of high seas, police said.

The boat driver and an assistant were rescued along with the five male and three female tourists.

I know you used to be able to but that was a while ago. The ferry is better from Donsak - slower, sure but at least you can have a beer on the way over and hopefully getthere in one piece.

  5. Yes, it does seem to be lacking, and that's really too bad. My hope was that I just hadn't come across them yet, and that others might be able to point me in the right direction.

By the way, I sent a message to Nakhonsi Sean, but I noticed that he hasn't posted since June.

He'll more than likely be sleeping!

    :):D

  6. Khanom beaches are nice enough, nothing to do there and still a lot of work needed to make the place livable though. I wouldn't say they're the nicest beaches in the country though, some beautiful little beaches in the west of Phangnga and up in Rayong, the bottom end of Koh Samet is absolutely georgeous. Each to their own.

  7. This is interesting. I recall speaking with a Thai woman in Bangkok and telling her I was headed to Hua Hin for a couple weeks. She said to watch out as there are little bugs in the sand that will bite you.

I spent a few days on the beach in Hua Hin and lo and behold I had all kinds of bite marks on the tops of my feet and ankles. Much worse than a mosquito bite they were larger and took weeks to go away. I don't get reactions from mosquito bites but I did get reactions from these bites.

Not sure what they were but I recall a friend of mine telling me that when he was visiting Rio years ago they had dug up the entire beach to get rid of an insect or parasite.

Sounds like sand flies. Best thing is go to a clinic and get the bites checked.

  8. Just get in your car and drive, stop whenever you see something that you like.

Everybody has a different idea about what is 'nice' so taking advice from others sometimes does not work out how you had hoped. There are plenty of places that fit your criteria and in my experience they are the places that you would only find by turning off the main roads and following the more minor routes. Khoa Sok is nice as is Ratchaprapa Dam but both are limited in what they offer as well as being slightly off the route between Surat and Krabi. Other suggestions are Khanom, Kiriwong, Lae Morakot etc etc.

Just jump in the car and go exploring.

This was curled up next to the nets on a louvered window. Haven't got a clue what it is, but to scale it must be about 1m long.

It's a lesser red crossed square white snake, common in these parts.

  10. Call me old fashioned but to me having a baby is something you do in a stable loving relationship

You might well be old fashioned but at the same time way out of touch. Married touching twenty years, very happily I might add and the times we've had the slightest arguement I can count on one hand. No kids, through choice as I have been married previously with kids and she not wanting any full stop. Suits us both fine .... through our own choice.

    :D

Who would want to bring a kid into this world now, the way it is going?
