  1. I'm off to chiang mai tonight. Whoever said that my school had some students caught working was right (some Koreans in a Korean barbers) and the hammer is coming down hard on the whole school. Even to us clasd attending students. I noticed that numbers in my class were way down this week. I suspect a lot of people have been kicked out.

Chiang mai is dodgy but hey TIT. My concern is my next trip to BKK immigration when I have my new ED visa from Uni. If they scrutinize my passport and see a CM office stamp there. I guess I'll just say I lived up there for a few months. Sawat de jao....

you say numbers in class are down and suspect many students kicked out. are you saying class attending students kicked out? any idea why?

Because they have been working as students which is illegal here

Nah many are legitimate students that's were Only given a week by BKK immigration automatically because they came from pro language. Typical over zealous Thai authorities. Catch a few then punish the group even though they are studying.

I think you will find that it is not illegal to work on an Ed visa, for not more than 20 hours per week, so long as you have the correct work permit.

  2. Hi guys!

Here's what I have just been informed by my school:

    RE; 90-Day Extensions
We just got confirmation from immigration that for every 90-day extension, it will be as follows:

    Package A
Immigration will be requiring a fee of 5000 THB for the no-hassle package. This means you pay 5000 THB and immigration will give the 90-day extension no questions asked. We will deliver the paperwork and passport to Immigration for the extension, but at the time the passport is ready for pickup, the customer will still be required to show up in person and collect their passport, along with having to consent to a photo being taken. That's it for that.

    Package B
Not paying this will then place the customer (you) into A] only getting a 15 day extension, and B] having to attend school 4 days per week during those 15 days, because C] an immigration officer will be slated to show up unannounced during that 15 days to make sure the customer (you) is attending. If you are not present, then your 15 day will not be extended to any length of time. This means you will lose your ED visa.

Be advised that this is the way it is for all school in Chon Buri... BUT... the rules are absolutely chaotic right now in that they could change before I get done typing this, or change in another month. We simply do not know.

  4. You could try www.free-tv-online.me, they have seasons 1-16. Google Chrome will warn you it contains malware, but I have used it for years no issues. They will ask you for your email address, but don't spam you.

  5. Meters should be calibrated to measure time and distance. So if Thailand's taxi meters are only measuring distance, I've got to agree with the cabbie's concerns. But their gripe should be lodged with the government agency that regulated taxis. If the metering scheme is unfair, lobby the government to change it. Don't get all bent out of shape at the customers.

Thai taxi meters ARE calibrated to measure time and distance. These details are displayed in front of you in most taxis.

But the fares, particularly the starting fares or flagfall, are too cheap. I can't for the life of me understand why flagfall hasn't increased from 35 Baht to at least 50 Baht, with 50% extra charged at night for fares between say 10pm and 5am?

And then is it only after the first km that fares start increasing? It used to be after 2km, another world record low and very unfair for the drivers.

Every other country in the world has seen taxi fare rises over the years, why not Thailand?

No wonder taxi drivers here are so frustrated, many of them refuse to use the meter or refuse the destination. Isn't it obvious? You can't make a living if you have to deal with such extremely low fares. If taxi fares were more reasonable, there would be less need for the drivers to cheat. There would probably also be fewer fare refusals.

A lot of this is obvious. Increase flagfall to 50 Baht, 60-75 minimum for nighttime fares. Also the fares should rise faster than they currently do - and even then taxi fares wouldn't be all that much more expensive than they are now.

Here's what is should be currently being charged.

There are 150,000 taxis in Bangkok. All taxis are metered with the starting fee of 35 Baht for the first 3 kilometers and then 5 Baht per Kilometer. There are many taxi companies and various coloured taxis but costs and fares are the same.

All Bangkok taxis must turn on their meters. It is illegal not to, but many drivers will try to bargain a flat fee if it is late at night or the weather is very bad and everyone wants one.
In general they are safe but some drivers tend to drive too fast so you should let ask them to slow down, which they will usually do albeit with a grin or a chuckle.
  6. Getting the visa at the embassy is not the current issue I expect to cause problems. What I'd like to hear is some current reports of people getting their 2nd and 3rd ED visas, and their experiences entering back through immigration, both by land and air.

Also, I remember hearing they'll be requiring proof of income for ED visas now. Has anyone experienced this, and what are acceptable forms of this proof if its needed?

I went at the end of my second ED-visa, for my 3rd. I also had some back to back Cambodian runs from 2 years ago, on the 2 week land waiver, still no issues what so ever at Savanahket Consulate or when I went through the boarder crossing. Never even had to show proof of income, this was on Wednesday 27th August 2014.

  7. You have a few options.

Thai Post 1900, from Si Sa Ket to Pattaya and can take up to 10 days.

Nahkhon Chai Air, must be empty of fuel. Sri Sa Ket to Pattaya, overnight or when the bus gets in and you need to let them know in advance, my missus sorted this out and I think she paid about 800-1500.

Train, a friend of mine does it from Si Sa Ket to Bangkok and then to Chiang Mai, not sure on the pricing but, advance booking is required.

  8. I think you will find the law of the land is being enforced, due to a thing called the coup, the law is that all entertainment establishments are to be closed by 02:00. Anything after that has to be requested through the correct channels, before the coup I think it was the good old graft 'law' being enforced. thumbsup.gif

  9. As I understand it, when you leave employment on a Non-B visa with the corresponding work permit, technically (legally) you and a Thai employee of the employer are supposed to go to immigration to cancel the visa, you then have 7 days to exit Thailand or get a new 7 day extension of stay. Then, you are both supposed to go to the local office for work permits and cancel the work permit together.

Trouble is this is rarely done due to non-Thai nationals and Thai nationals not really knowing what to do, as the people in charge do not really know or enforce it.

I have done this myself when I left employment for a previous company, I left the company and neither of us cancelled the visa or cancelled the work permit. I stayed until the end of the 90 day report, then left to Laos for a new type of visa, no problems or late fees.

  10. I have lived on 101 Lat Phrao for approx. 2 years. There's quite a few buses that run along the Lat Phrao road, info. as many have mentioned, it is one of the busiest road in BKK, during the day I have caught a taxi from 101 to Sukhumvitt road soi's 79 and also around 4, generally costing between 100-140 baht on the meter, also the same going back to 101 if you can get a cabbie that will take you. MRT, has it's own on Lat Phrao 21, 23 going west, or 24/26 going east buses available ranging between 8-16 baht approx depending on A/C or not.

  11. @Woody1, Thanks for a very refreshing read on TV. My everyday life is very similar. Thanks for pointing out, that I am not the only one. I thought I was strange or different. cheesy.gifcheesy.gifgiggle.gifcoffee1.gif

Psych01, do you have a particular fetish, or bug bare?? Or will a random one from here do?

@Woody1, nothing specific. Do not wish to create a toll post. It was good to hear someone else had a good refreshing day. biggrin.png
