  1. Vietnam has become fairly tough on visas. Companies can only employ a certain number of foreigners, I believe it is 3 foreigners for as 100 local staff. At the moment I can only get a 3-month multiple entry visa though I do not know if this only applies to Cambodia.

  2. I have lived in Vietnam for 15 years before moving to Cambodia. There are many parts I love but I hate HCMC. Traffic is horrendous with people riding their bikes down sidewalks and traffic lights being largely ignored. The noise levels are terrible, the Vietnamese share that trait with the Chinese.

Having said that, the food is great and if you can stay in one of the more affluent districts, life is good. I do not agree that nobody speaks English but it would be wise to try and learn some Vietnamese quickly.

  3. I have generally been lucky with taxi drivers but I do remember a rather unpleasant episode many moons ago: I had arranged for a taxi to pick us up early the next morning to take us outside BKK for bird watching. Taxi showed up at 4 or 5 as agreed and off we go. When we are in the middle of nowhere, on a highway, the driver decides that he needs to take his car back and dumps me and my then wife right there. Still dark, no clue where we were, but another taxi comes along. We jump in happily only to be told a couple of kilometers down the road that he, too, had to go back. The third taxi finally got us where we wanted to go.

Not nice but just another story. Since then, it has been mostly smooth sailing.

And I do have to admit that like some fool I too had an argument with a taxi driver when he asked for the toll as I was not aware that I had to pay for it.

  4. I don't know what world they are living in, but starfish and sea cucumbers are not endangered by a long shot. More ridiculous shenanigans from the Thai government where they are only going after a small business man who has no clout. It should be more than enough to give them a warning and do it quietly, not blather it all over the news as if they are really doing something.

Actually, many sea cucumbers are endangered as there is a huge demand in China: http://www.doc.ic.ac.uk/~kpt/terraquest/galapagos/issues/harvest/cukes.html

Typical for TV: when laws are not enforced, the Thai bashing starts. And when they are enforced? Ditto.

  5. There is a great deal of farmers who have been in debt and they didn't qualify to join the Missmanaged and ineptly handled rice scheme, but that doesn't suit many people as its always about politics.

People need to think before they post at times, NOBODY here knows what and how his debts occurred and for how many years he's had those debts.

He couldn't diversify from rice as he still needs water for cultivation of whatever crop was to replace it.

But some crops use a LOT LESS water!

You are clearly ignorant. Paddy land is only suitable for rice. You cannot just switch to a less water intensive crop.

    Really! Why?

Not so easy. Sure, some crops are a lot more profitable but it takes a long term investment. If you live hand-in-mouth that is just not feasible.

I feel sorry for the guy, yet another person that has lost his livelihood, and life, to a society where agricultural goods have become yet another commodity to make a few people rich and screw over the poor.

  6. Nothing to worry about i also think.

It's those darn little tiny ones (especially from dogs) that scare me because they can be hard to see/detect.

I guess when they drink enough blood they get big enough to see?

For removal: Vaseline, they suffocate and let go.

Actually easy to remove by hand though care needs to be taken to not rip of the head or squeeze the stomach contents back in.

  7. In 2013, another former Texas prosecutor was disbarred after being charged over a wrongful murder conviction that sent an innocent man to prison for nearly 25 years. Ken Anderson had also been accused of misconduct by the state bar and pleaded no contest to a charge of contempt of court. He agreed to a 10-day jail jail sentence.

Ten days for sending a man away for 25 years!

  8. I must admit that I am always a little baffled when people express distaste about what their Thai families eat. You chose to live here, you to chose to marry locally; deal with it I should think.

I can think of a lot of Western specialties that would probably raise an eyebrow or two in Asia.
