Thanks for the reply, Joe. I did go prearmed with the announcement, but was just told come back Friday, as were others. And as I was walking out, he said, there will be overstay charges too. Which given I'd only been stamped until October 12th makes me think this was premeditated plan to get some cash . Done openly in office in front of manager, and others told the same. So should i challenge this on friday or just suck it up? I'm thinking the latter

The announcement that all people who extended their visas under amnesty in September with a payment of 1900 and an embassy letter could extend for free until November is already being challenged at local level. I thought it was strange they didnt stamp at Krabi immmigration last month until October 31st but October 12th. Went today and was told the new visa for November 30th extension 'hadn't come yet' (whatever that means) and come back Friday. But there will be overstay charges on Friday, presumably 4 x 500 = 2000. Heard other people told to come back Friday too. This was done openly in office so obviously approved, at least locally. Anyone else experiencing similar or will some people get it for free as announced? I'm presuming at local level they have discretion to do whatever they want so just have to eat it

This sounds ominous, especially as he was apparently developing a story on the past activities of the Khmer Rouge in the region, and victims of the KR. This would involve interviewing numerous people who very literally had blood on their hands. It is to be hoped that his pursuit of a story that was worth telling isn't related to his disappearance. Journalists like Dave, who I don't personally know, deserve the upmost respect for their pursuit of the truth and determination to give acknowledgement to hitherto voiceless victims. My thoughts are with his friends and family at this difficult time.

Been a while since I studied Aristotle but I'm sure his ideal state was aristocracy and not democracy as this seems to imply by translating 'Politeia' as politics when in his book 'politics' it tends to be used as a form of government - rule by the many, and therefore a good democracy would simply be a better form of the rule by the many than a bad form of the rule by the many. Sorta makes his premise a house built on sand.
He could have just said the Thai political system is so f*cked that you're gonna get governed by the Shinawatra clan or the likes of Suthep: A bit like being asked, 'would you like your turd polished or au natural?'

How old is the child? If he/she's a toddler, and the mother was taking care of he/she then you cannot divide support for her from support for the child.
Personally, I think people should man up to their responsibilities and there's no bigger one than having a child - intended or not. And, I speak as someone familiar with your situation. It's easy to feel resentful at having to give cash to someone you may now positively dislike, and whose motives you may suspect, but the child's an innocent in all this. The same cannot be said for you or her, so the needs of the child are paramount.
If what you're giving is sufficient to the child not to need for anything essential, materially, then fair enough. I'd say a minimum of 15,000 personally, and I don't care that this is in excess of underpaid Thai workers' salary as other posters have said, as I wouldn't want my child, to scratch around like some kids of underpaid workers in a developing country. It is to be hoped that you'll also be able to offer emotional support for the child too as his/her dad by sorting out the issues, difficult as they are, with the mother, so you at least have access.

At the risk of appearing flippant, what surprises me most is why anyone would get addicted to such a crap drug like ya baa. The feeling is negligible, you smell like stale chocolate and it's effect is akin to taking a few pro plus. So, I'm told :-) Maybe TV expats whou='ve been here a while could clarify whether pre Thakisn it was sold openly for long distance truck drivers and the like: is that hearsay?
But to be serious, the detailing of the tragic story of the guy whose missus was hooked on meth is a warning against addiction and not a drug per se, and addiction can be devastating whether it's a legal or illegal drug.
The difference I notice in drug use between the UK and Thailand is the lack of drug education or awareness about what is acceptable drug use (obviously to hardliners none is acceptable but then they get all confused about their own legal narcotics of choice) and the dangers of addiction. I come from a generation where recreational drug use is acceptable and nothing to be frowned upon, and judging by the successful careers my friends enjoyed had no negative impact upon them. But they knew when to draw the line, they were informed about drug use. Compare that to the bug-eyed bar girl who tells you she love ice because give you power. There seems to be a ridiculous class status in Thailand where ice users look down their noses at ya baa uses, equating the higher expense with higher quality even though both are probably made from skanky ingredients in a Cambo or Burmese lab. And, it appears despite relatively draconian drug laws, it's spreading though that's only anecdotal.
As another poster mentioned, the poor get the worse end of the stick getting banged up, while others will buy themselves out of trouble, and this being Thailand there are a fair few places where the cops will be paid by dealers to recycle product and stay off their backs. Given that it's not going to go away however much they escalate punitive policies, it'd be nice to see some more preventative measures in place and better education about the effects of takings such drugs on daily, long term basis, as when long term ice use ages you prematurely and many female users thinks it makes them look beautiful, there's a clear gap in informed use.

When i first got here a little under 6 years ago, I was stunned by some of the drivel some of these guys would trot out about Western women. I heard all the old chestnuts like "once they hit 30, they get fat", "they don't know how to look after a man", "the bitch just wanted the house" and "she put her career and her friends before me" and they said these things with an air of "tough luck you silly cows; you had your chance but I've got a young Thai bargirl now"
I was sure I could hear the collective sigh of 400 million Western women kicking themselves for having let these premium specimens get away.I remember asking myself where on earth they were meeting these dragons cos I'd never encountered them but then, after a while, I began to see a common streak running between pretty much every whinging wheezer on the subject of Western women. They were all - to a man - wannabe alpha males.
You see, back in the West, having money doesn't necessarily cut it as far as getting a woman to love you is concerned because so many women take perfectly good care of themselves financially. Indeed, even in instances where it is enough to get a look in, there's way too much competition from younger, better-looking guys with more money than your average Thai expat barfly.
So they roll up here where any insecure, socially-awkward, alpha male wannabe can pull an attractive woman several notches above the heifers he's been used to settling for back in Farangland.
All he has to do is produce a wallet because here, in Thailand, it's acknowledged that cash levels the playing field with Thais in general and with certain Thai women in particular. In Thailand, those soft skills; those ephemeral, wishy-washy qualities like empathy and understanding that women the world over set so much store by - can seemingly be successfully supplanted by regular and liberal application of a relatively insignificant amount of money.
Of course, the inability to communicate in anything but Thai-lish means that he can only meet her financial needs.

Hmm ... Why on earth would anybody want to date/marry a Thai lady? Deep question. After 2 seconds of thought the following popped to mind:
* usually 10-30 years younger
* very good looking to beautiful
* they do the housework, shopping, cooking, laundry as they loose face if man works. They even call it woman's work.
* take direction very nicely
* willing sexual participants (this should be the first point)
* warm, cuddelly, affectionate ... if you do not sleep around
* they see us as a status symbol
* They want the man to be the leader with none of this woman's equality shit like in the West, where they want to make the man into a lady-man
* they do nag but in a very qute way
* etc
Why would anyone not date/marry a Thai lady. And if it does not work out, go into the lady forest and pick another one.

I agree with the OP to a degree despite it being troll-bait.
I don't think you can have a profound, meaningful relationship with someone you don't really know, and to know someone you need to be able to communicate. If you are not fluent in Thai, or your GF isn't fluent in English, then where's the profound connection: great sex and making you laugh you can find in any bar in Thailand. Cleaning the house and great food you can find with domestic help. But then a lot of fellas seem to express bitterness about women back home who had the audacity to have personalities and challenge them when they were being pr*cks, so welcome to paradise.
If you were lucky enough to have relationships with women who were attractive in every sense back home, then Thailand isn't paradise, but a place where you actually find it more difficult to find a GF due to communication issues. Fair play to the posters who've traversed that and have normal healthy relationships. From my experience, they are a minority .
You don't seem to realise how many western men hate western women. Google it if you are interested. Many web sites on the subject.
Sadly, I do, as I've listened in bars to many of them bang on with their bitter, generalising BS. But hate's a strong word. Why would anyone of sound mind hate western women for not being what they want them to be. Preference is a better word. And, it all depends on the reason they prefer them over western women. Because an attractive one or young one at home wouldn't look twice at them? Because they only ever managed to have bloody awful relationships with women at home? Because they were cheated on, or found them insufficiently subservient ? Not always but mainly that's as much to do with the men.
But if you mean men who have a preference for asian looking women over western women, find them more feminine etc or favour traditional relationships with old school power differentials, where they are waited on hand and foot while being the bread winner, then fair enough. Naturally,they will prefer Asian women. But read through these threads, which category would you say most of them fall into?

it seems logical to suggest that any western man that deliberately flies half way round to world to a developing nation to find a wife because his economic advantage affords him a choice of younger attractive women might not have been blessed with an abundance of relationship skills back home, or be the dream partner for any woman.
Similarly, many Thai women looking for a man purely for financial gain might not make the dream wife. But there's honourable exceptions who treat each other with kindness and respect, and that's when it seems to work.
When I lived in Pattaya, however, far too many times you saw the other type who would treat their wives with utter contempt, seeing their economic advantage as entitlement to behave like a white slave trader. Every time one of these unsavoury incidents surfaces, it begs the question what's being done to stop developing countries becoming a playground for paedophiles, namely preventative measures rather than reactive measures. There was a report on TV not long ago of an English guy getting caught and he had previous in his own country. How hard can it be to ensure anyone with previous sex offences to their name is denied entry? On a separate note, when I clocked the alleged offender's name, it was all too predictable that the brains trust would surface suggesting his offence was to do with his possible origins.

Couldn't make it up....Great that he's fine, but you'd be hard pushed to find a person who read the original story that didn't think he'd been 'offed' by the GF and accomplices due to their late reporting of the car going missing.
A lesson perhaps for our own cynicism and also that, in Thailand, nothing is ever logical or as straightforward as it appears....

Interesting question by the OP, as the island on which I lived, I used to wonder how the Brits there would fare should they ever have to go home. Personally, I'd have no problems going back because there's some things I'd prefer about the UK than here, so I'd just focus on those. I'm more thinking about the guys who used to be on the 9-5, but sold up and relocated here in their late 30 early 40s, and spend everyday pissed, talking abut how <deleted> it is to live in England and are used to cuddling up every night to a woman half their age , sometimes the same one, sometimes a different one. That would be some serious readjustment when the dough runs out, back to being invisible to younger women and some serious detoxing needed before entering employment again in a country they now profess to despise. Ouch.

Charlie, sorry to hear that you susceptible to panic attacks, as they can be hugely unpleasant for anyone who experiences them. I started having them during my finals at university and haven't had one in 20 years, so it is possible to move past this. I still get anxious sometimes when stressed - who doesn't- but it doesn't develop into full blown attacks anymore.
A major problem can be that long after the initial trigger has passed, you start getting anxious about being anxious, what they call the vicious circle of anxiety. I used medication to first break this circle. I wouldn't recommend tranquillisers because of attendant and well publicised problems but 'betablockers', namely propranol. These aren't suitable for everyone if you have some underlying medical conditions, but can be used 'situationally', when you feel one coming on or experience one. Within a minute, the physical symptoms of the attack die down. This can help stop the fear of having an attack, and you can even carry them around for added reassurance later. I also echo the other posters for exercise , meditation etc, seeing a GP. A meditation practitioner could no doubt get the same affects of taking a pill, just by the breathing control so is probably a better long term solution than meds. Also, if the cause of attacks is a constant e.g. phobias, then any meds or alternative therapies treatment might be best combined with CBT too. Good luck with dealing with this.

I still think you are just as likely to find trouble in UK - either because you are drunk and not making the best decisions or you are just unlucky and in the wrong place at the wrong time. Stephen Lawerence mean anything to you lot??? 17 years later and the police still cant bring themselves to admit how wrong they got it.

Agree with Graeme. After a few years here, some of it spent in Pattaya, I've never witnessed one incident of aggression involving farangs and thais and I have spent a lot of time in bars and out at night. Yes, I have been fortunate, but just as with lurid incidents reported in the UK tabs, we don't want to over sensationalise and emphasise everyday threats. It would be interesting to see stats of tourist visitors to Thai and the number of reported incidents as a better indication of real rather than perceived threat. Incidentally, I have been beaten up once in my life and that was in Thailand - by 3 drunk men, while ordering a sub late night in Pattaya. The brave boys who set about me...English.

Firstly, and i'd hope you agree, sexual misdemeanours against minors is never justifiable or excusable and to say so isn't 'self-righteous rantings'.
Second, it is not only in Thailand but the UK as well, and many other countries, where minors feel shame or wrongful culpability about what's happened to them and stay silent pace the many sex cases coming to light in the UK at the moment. Even in cases where consent has occurred which you touch on, it is still inexcusable because they are minors despite your comment about the "stench of little prostitutes".
Obviously, the key to both is that they are children not adults and do not have the experience or knowledge to easily process such abuse. Paedophiles target developing countries because there are more opportunities due to cultural differences or less rigidly applied rule of law: this in no way should excuse the motivations or acts of paedophiles and lead to a rant about cultural issues.
Given the alleged offences against the alleged perpetrator in such a short space of time, I'd be surprised if similar offences haven't been committed in the UK, which begs the question of what checks if any are Thai immigration officials doing to prevent sex offenders obtaining long stay visas.

Admitting your crime and pleading for mercy after you are caught is about as disingenuous as shouting "victim" after the fact, when in fact there was nothing stopping you from doing it all along. Not shoddy journalism at all. The reporter isn't claiming to have proof; he's just reporting the story, just like they do in the West. Complete conjecture is what people on ThaiVisa love. Others will be on here soon that claim to know the cause of death. I can't see anything wrong with the way this is reported. The article is very clear that the cause of death isn't know. It goes on to say that the body will be tested to find the cause of death. It's natural to speculate, based on what you know. If the report didn't saying anything about the cause of death, the reporter would be accused on here of covering up the cause. It doesn't matter what reporters say, because the expats without a life will be on here complaining. If these expats are so good, how come they don't get a job as a reporter?
If you don't like the reports, then don't come on here every day to read them. Simple.
Rather than shoddy journalism, I wouldn't even dignify this as 'journalism' (As a former UK journalist, I got tired of - when living there - defending the decency of most journalists and their commitment to the truth against sensationalist reporting that plays fast and loose with the facts. After all, most journalists in the UK do not work on the tabloids)
Firstly, the headline: 'Gay German'. What relevance is the sexual orientation of the deceased to a possible - no-one knows at this stage - death from a heart attack? The only motivation for including this is titillation of the reader - ooh gays and love drugs - and sets the tone for a story that robs someone who deserves our sympathy, like anyone who suffers an untimely demise (55 being considered untimely, nowadays) -of any respect.
Secondly, a reporter never simply 'reports' a story as the poster above claims; he shapes the story by ordering the facts, or in this case, assembling baseless speculation. Note the second paragraph, which in conventional news reporting expands the key facts of the intro. "There were no signs of a struggle, as officers found sexual potency pills and a male sex toy." This is implying a cause which is not yet known and is making an assumption. Until the post mortem is carried out and communicated, the story should be supported only by known facts i.e. the truth as we currently know it to be. And, you don't relay police speculation unless you flag this up as speculation
Finally, a poster elsewhere claims that a TV report backs up assertions in this report. The truth being elsewhere is not a justification for a story written like this. Even if it transpires that he did have a heart attack due partly to the use of sex pills, it doesn't justify a story like this. It's fine for us all as posters to make conjecture and speculate but basic standards of journalism should be considerably higher that this, with responsibility to those reported about, and those reported to. Ask yourself, if this was a relative of yours, would you be happy with such 'reporting'?

Yes, you're right about the visa stamp and I hope you are right about there being no overstay charges even though he distinctly mentioned them as I left. Will find out soon enough and update then if there are, and what the (bogus) justification was. Thanks for the input
