  1. MSI Wind wins product Product of the Year

UK big-hitting gadget site 'Pocket-lint' has rated the MSI Wind netbook as its 'Product of the Year' at the Vodafone Pocket-Lint Gadget Awards. The Wind won out over other phenomenons such as the iPhone 3G, which took 2nd, the FujiFilm F60fd camera and even the Asus Eee PC. In addition to standing atop the biggest podium with the Product of the Year gold medal, the Wind also won best laptop, with the slim Toshiba Portege R500 coming in second in this category.

The Vodafone sponsored awards were hosted at a formal event on the 6th November with PR departments out in full force. The Wind came home as the winner of the night by a slim margin over the hugely popular iPhone 3G. The Eee PC took out the innovation award, the Nokia E71 as the best email device, LittleBIGPlanet the best game and the iconic B&W Zeppelin speakers took home the best music gadget.

  2. Hi John, Have you connected as Reimar pointed out which is the correct way Wall > UPS > Modem

if so try Wall > Modem to see if there's any difference , on a UPS I use to have when I went the correct route

Wall > UPS > Modem , the signal strength for some reason was not as strong as Wall > Modem

    just a thought :o

  3. I have the same voltage fluctuations and spikes both up and down , along with the house lights dimming / bright at my home

which was causing a lot of problems with a Mac I use , I did some research and came up with the following.

I bought a new APC UPS which came with Apple Mac monitoring software CD, connected the UPS to the Mac with the provided USB cable, Then manually adjusted the APC UPS sensitivity setting via the UPS front panel

I bought a PowerMatic (Powercom) tap-change voltage regulator , which now feeds the UPS , this smoothes out the incoming mains voltage and spikes so the voltage feeding the UPS is cleaner .

With the above Two units connected to the Mac , the house voltage still fluctuates and the house lights still flicker , but the Mac is now showing no past signs at all , this works for me and my set up .

    Powermatic Tap-change voltage unit here.....

    APC Info here ....

I purchased the Tap-change voltage unit from an IT Zone

The APC unit I could only see on line, and I purchased it from here ...

Note . APC was the only brand of UPS I could find that had the Mac software option .

  4. Just spotted this comment from September 2008 ..

“Netbooks are a very good solution for mobile people, and help to satisfy certain needs, the margin impact of netbooks is better than on notebooks. The margin of netbooks is not a problem.”

Those are the words of Acer President and CEO Gianfranco Lanci delivered during an Acer Global press conference in Budapest, Hungary. Mr. Lanci also confirmed that due to the success of their Acer Aspire One netbook, it is most likely that the company is planning to release an Aspire One netbook with larger screen. And this is understable since most of the late comers in the scene did not bother to come up with a 7-inch and 8.9-inch netbook anymore, but instead immediately released their notebook with the 10-inch screen.

Additionally, he also said that the current model of the Acer Aspire One will soon have a 3G capability as well as WiMAX to futher boost the success of their netbook.

Similarly, Mr. Lanci also announced that Gateway, the company which they recently bought will also be coming out with a netbook of their own.

There you go, Acer fans, better wait up for these new model of the Aspire One if you haven’t bought one for yourself, unless of course if you’re looking into another brand.

  5. Just wondering if any one with a Eee PC , can tell us how things are going and may be also offer some up to date user comments , it sounds as if the Wind is blowing in the right direction :D

I was thinking about that today and was considering splitting off posts into new topics, one topic under each netBook major brand such as MSI, Acer, Asus and get members to post similar experiences that I've written about for their specific brand/model. Or if kept here perhaps a guideline like below:

    * Brand & Model

    * Specifications of unit

    * Operating system in use and if have installed a new one, experience and gotchas.

    * Operation such as Wifi, keyboard, screen usability, battery life, ease of use, limitations, things that are annoying, etc.

    Just a thought.

I think its a good idea to sort out the ..

Just seeing the crowds gathered around the Netbooks at my local IT mall , I can only see this segment growing in numbers,

as with all things Electronic here in Thailand I all way's tend to shudder at the thought of having to seek any sort of after sales customer service , especially when trying to resolve a possible problem while the thing is still under the manufactures warranty , and I would love to hear from any one who has had to seek this type of help , and just how many Valium tablets it took to keep them from committing murder :o

  7. Any sightings of the Samsung NC10 in Thailand yet?

I was wondering the same , Any one seen the Samsung NC 10 in Thailand ?

    http://www.ebuyer.com/product/150182

    http://www.techradar.com/reviews/computing...0-481336/review

From reading comments on other forums, it seem's that Samsung does not have good customer service reputation

and I wonder just how things would work out with buying this Samsung NC 10 here in Thailand and needing to use to Samsung customer service for some reason - could the equation be ..........

Samsung Poor customer service + Customer services in Thailand = I wish I had bought some other brand

Has any one had dealings with Samsung Customer Service here in Thailand ..? :o

  8. At home, EDGE is my only Internet link. I use DTAC and the USB cable to my SE k790i and the connection is on and stable pretty much all the time. This includes being connected on the weekends 12-14 hours each day. Have been using this method for a couple of years now. Check your signal strength meter on the phone. The strength makes a lot of difference in connection speeds and connectivity.

I all so connect to the internet using a SE k790i and DTAC, I purchased the SE k790i cradle and SE external antenna cable

and then installed an external DTAC mobile phone antenna on my house roof, and connected the k790i to the external roof antenna , this has made a big difference and the EDGE speeds better. :o

  9. The New Samsung NC10

This 10-inch netbook trumps the field with its spacious keyboard and more than 7 hours of battery life.

Until now, no other netbook has been able to match the 10-inch MSI Wind’s endurance, strong performance, and spacious keyboard. Samsung’s NC10 is the only product that provides comparable—and even improved—features for a lower price. Its comfortable, well-positioned keyboard, speedy and spacious hard drive, and more than 7 hours of endurance make the $499 Samsung NC10 the most well-rounded 10-inch netbook on the market.

  10. Asus Shows New, Swank Eee PC S101, Sexy's Back?

Asus' new Eee PC S101 is a 10" Eee PC variant that comes pre-loaded with Windows XP SP3 and nearly identical specs to the Eee PC 1000H , except for some rather healthy chassis design changes and a selection of higher quality materials .The major functional difference between the S101 and the 1000H is that the S101 is a little lighter (2.3lbs) with a 4-cell battery claiming 5.4 hours of life, while the 1000H has a 6-cell battery, weighing in at 3.2lbs.With a 32BG SSD, the S101 will retail for $699 -- so it's not your kid's netbook.

  11. ASUS EEEPC 1000 40GB SOLID STATE DRIVE

    http://eeepc.asus.com/global/product1000-spec.html

Is the above model available in Thailand (Pattaya ?)

If so, where, and how much ?

It only comes with Linux but I need windows. Do local retailers have licensed versions of Windows XP that they could install at a reasonable price ? ie, versions that will work with windows update ?

I'm thinking it would be suitable to carry on trips on the motorbike given the solid state drive. Good for emails, photo's, GPS tracking etc when on the move.
