  1. Why don't you help me out? [emoji846]

2014 - We want Chinese, because that's where the money is.

2018 - Chinese tourism dropping, they heard from Prawit it's actually THEIR fault that the boat sank. You see, it must have been a Chinese operated boat, not Thai. Such event cannot be Thai related.

2019, January - Let's feed 10,000 Chinese with mango and sticky rice, it's good PR.

2019, later in the year - Let us lobby Indians, a market with amazing potential.

2021 - We don't like the Indians, they are this and that. Let's lobby the penguins in Antarctica.

But please, help me out, if I am missing anything from the picture [emoji846]

The tourists you claim are lobbied by the Thai government do not have any requirement for a bank deposit.

  2. [quote post="14312343" But the Bank of Thailand is limited in what it can do on it's own.

The BoT has a as any national/central a bunch of possibilities to influence their currency.

    - cut interest rates
    - buy foreign currencies/sell THB
    - buy foreign bonds
    - restrict foreign currency inflows

But all this would make the Thai elite poorer, so not in their books.

Time for a new George Soros.

And Thailand changing the value of the Thai baht on world markets may be construed as currency manipulation.

  3. You are exactly correct, i would like to see real undisputed stats on this, was it immigration failing to track them down, hospital failing to report, it was probably both IF at all. I M O someone is fiddling the books to get the cash and falangs are a good target to blame. As we know hospital staff have been caught in the past.

I am not sure anyone ever blamed farangs for unpaid hospital bills. I believe it was “foreigners”. But, if paranoia is preferred.....

  4. Just a note on my experience opening a Bangkok Bank account in Pattaya which may provide encouragement for anyone else contemplating (and possibly dreading) doing the same thing. Either I was incredibly lucky or the chore isn't nearly as daunting as some people make it out to be.

I've had a savings account at the Phra Tamnak office in Pattaya for about 20 years. Obviously twenty years ago
opening an account was easier than it is today, at least based on threads posted on TV.

Since next year I want to use the Baht 800,000 in the bank method for my retirement extension renewal, I decided it would be safer to have a second account to hold that money. By safer I mean I would be less likely to get carried away spending money.

I decided to give a branch east of Sukhumvit a try since I now live in a house on the "dark side." From everything I've read, even if you already have an account with them, it can be a hassle to open another account. I randomly chose the BB branch on the east side of Sukhumvit across a smallish soi from Num Chai.

I simply said I wanted to open a second account to keep money for immigrations.  She instantly understood what I meant. Handed her only my nearly full bank book from the Phra Tamnak branch and my passport ... and later signed 101 things and provided my SS# which they want/need for Americans.

    All she asked was:
    1) did I want a fixed rate account? No.
    2. Did I want an ATM card? No.
    3. Would I like her to replace the bank book for my Phra Tamnak branch account since it was almost full? Yes.

After that arduous interrogation she opened the second account, transferred Baht 700,000 (I'll top iy up in the next month or two) from my present account to the new account, replaced my old bank book with a new one and gave me a fresh bank book for the new account with the transfer duly recorded.

Based on things I've read here (to be fair, there have been some posts on TV from people who also encountered no problems opening accounts at the bank of their choosing), I was expecting a tedious run around and requirements for whatever in the way of documentation. It's nice when things are incredibly simple and quickly accomplished.

Thanks for the report. Glad things went well. This only proves that the whining that occurs on TVF is largely simple Thai bashing, or from people who did not silupply the required documentation in the first place

  5. Sealbash, you responded to this:

Not sure if my English friend who has lived here for a good few years is talking rubbish, but
he says that often when the police arrive at the house, one of the first things they demand is the passport and bank books, and sometimes any cash and gold assets.
Is this possible, or is he going senile ?

Fact is the police do ask for and get the passport.  Secondly, they have been known to remove cash from the safe box of the deceased.

Not in my experience. 4 different occasions

  6.

All mandates cease eases upon death (not notification of it).

A Bank is protected until advice is received, but anyone accessing funds after death is acting fraudulently.

However, I agree that the other  party inherits by succession and in practical terms no one is going to do anything about it.

Is this your educated opinion, or so you have a relevant Thai law stating this?

  7. Thaivisa is a social media forum on the internet, therefore people use abbreviations that all experienced internet users understand.  You can Google OTOH to find out what this common abbreviation means, unless you're a member of "the lazy typists brigade."

On The Other Hand, it would be just as easy to tell him?

  8. Ridiculous post,  the money savings was not the topic, it was scheme that should not bar any customer,  OR the poster was Joking, or he couldn't think of a more silly answer.   FACT
The topic was being informative, but we always get the keyboard tinkler that cannot resist being OFF the point

Keyboard tinkled? Your response is to make up names??? Quite humorous actually.

  9. Firstly a Visa is obtained at a Thai Embassy or Consulate outside the country.
An Extension is obtained in country at an Immigration office.

There isn't, per-se, a Retirement Visa, but a group of Visas (Non ImmO categories OA, OX etc) are used by retirees to stay long term in Thailand.

Sadly, Extensions of Stay based on retirement (obtained at Immigration Offices) are frequently referred to as Retirement Visas, by many people, including Visa Agents and Immigration Officer too. It causes occasional confusion.

I have never really understood with whom this causes confusion. Whenever someone mentions marriage visa, or retirement visa, I and those I talk to have always fully understood what was meant.

  10.
I know its an incredibly technical subject and is clearly just too difficult for some to get their head around, I'll try to put it in simple words....

These other countries mentioned offer residents of any nationality a residents rate.

If you are unable to understand the difference between a National and a Resident - then I'd agree, just sit back, enjoy the ignorance of a simple life and keep the blood pressure under control.

And also understand the difference between a residence visa and a non- immigrant visa

  11. Nobody brings their membercard to Tops...they have to tell it to the cashier, make some mistakes in it (long number), try it again and finally YES it works...in the meantime there's a long queue at every cashier wasting the customers' time.

I really hate TOPS...you also have to check the expiry date of every single product or you'll buy eggs which are almost expired.

How many days do eggs have before they expire?
