  1. Mobile telephony is very profitable now. AIS self costs for 1 min is 20 Satang, infrastructure in place. After deregulation all the networks will be open for all suppliers and everyone has to accept interconection fees set by the regulator which will eat the profit.eg: AIS has to accept all the calls from Orange etc at a given price. Giants like Orange can dump the prices endlessly because they will be able to use AIS networks and infrastructure for a minimal price. Orange applies real strategies. They do not have to build up all the infrastructure. AIS will also be forced by regulators to provide more capacity which will eat the profit. At the end the newcomers will win. Strange isnt it, this is the game of deregulation.

Talking from real experience. Dont do the same mistakes as stupid Worldcom and many other Telecoms.

Sell now at peak business, be smart :o

Shin peaked at Bt46.25. Rumors will drive the price up.Bualuang Securities Plc vice president Pongrat Ratanatavanananda said that the shares had been boosted by reports that the Temasak takeover would be conducted at a price of Bt69 per share.

    Very good timing indeed

However, Thaksin did not deny outright that his family would sell its stake. When asked about this, he gave reporters a mischievous smile :D

  2. I eliminate mounds with water hose treatment. Stick the hose up to 50 cm in the ground and let the water run for 10 min. Around the house drop some garlic cloves like a barrier. They eat the garlic and never come back again. Repeat it once a month.

  3. Imported wines in Thailand face nearly a 400 per cent tax, but even so many foreign brands are cheaper than Thai brands, which start in the 400 baht (10 dollars) price range.

The quality of Thai wines has still a long way to improve. They are about the same grade as a european 1 star wine and are sold for the price of a 4 star wine. Lets drink a 400 baht 4 star :o foreign wine.

  4. wow, ozone sounds like the holy grail! Cure for the SAR’S Virus! (http://www.visoot.com/ozone/)

i had a look around as see there are 2 types of ozone generators, UV and Corona Discharge.

    http://www.poolcenter.com/ozone_total_eclipse_poolstor.htm

the Corona Discharge produces more ozone and uses less power then UV for about the same price.

does anyown own an ozone generator for their pool? what are you using, what experience do you have?

I forgot to mention I use a UV Ozonator for 2 years. It is the same type as used by small water filtration comp. all over Thailand. 40 Watt UV lamp inside a 20 cm stainlees steel pipe. Costs only THB 9.000

Side effects are more backwash of filter required because of the cleaning efficiency of this Ozonator. The PH reading increases by 0.4 which is actually positive but the CL (chlorine) reading is dropping by 0.3 ppm. My supplied water has a very high iron content of 600 ppm, ( normal is about 200) this leads to over oxidation and brown stains in the pool. Now I run the UV filter 4x 3 hours per day.

No problem at all :o , once you know it.

  5. Looking through an old thread, I saw a reference to 'Ponton zoo' near Roi Et.  Although I knew there was a new aquarium in the city, I have never heard about a zoo in the area.  Does anybody know anything about such a place?  If it exists, directions would be much appreciated.  No answers please mentioning the plastic animals near the lake!

Apart from information on Roi Et, does anybody know of any zoos in the NE other than Korat?

This small zoo is located in the city Ponton north-east of Roi-et. Small animals can be found there roaming free and some animals in cages. Very nice well cared place. Ask for the falang David, everybody knows him.

  6. Mines (see photo below my name) is a commercial pool 8x16 m and 1.6 m at the deep end plus a small children pool 5x5m. Total  water volume 180 m3 and total running cost THB 3000 per month.

A friend has a private overflow pool of 5x10x1.20 meter and has total running costs of THB 800 per month using a UV - ozone filter which cuts chlorine consumption by half :o . Cleaning every fourth day 20 min.

really, that's not bad at all. i'm actually thinking of something quite small anyhow, just to splash around in, say 3m x 4m.

what is an "overflow pool " and how does a UV ozone filter work?. thanks for the info.

Overflow is the standard nowadays. The water flows over the edges of the pool and then returns back to the filter.

A UV filter produces Ozone and sanitizes water with a purification 3000 x more effective :D than Chlorine. It is absolutely harmless and used for drinking water preparation at the final stage, water cleaning in commercial pools, spas, fun parks etc

Besides this Ozone provides a pleasant smell, is very gentle for the skin due to the increased PH value.

Frankly speaking a small pool can run on Ozone treatment and you can forget about the the stinking, agressive chlorine.

    The function is explained below.

the thing that puts me off about pools is the running cost and work to keep it clean. how much do you pay per month for chemicals, electricity, etc and how much work do you put into it?

Does you THB 3000 per month include paying someone to do the work or is it all in chemicals and electricity?

THB 3000 is for chemical and electricity. Since this is a commercial pool with a restaurant and 30 people at peak times in the pool costs for staff are calculated separately.

  9. Global house in Roi-et has plenty of high standard windows. Very solid PVC frames , double glazed, etc.  Besides that they have plenty of western styled gadgets :o , doors with solid locks, beautiful bathtubs, showers with built in radios, huge selection of tiles, interior lamps etc. You can fill up your truck at Global (spelled Gobon in Thai) and build a beautiful  :D western styled house.

    Have fun

Sounds good. Do they deliver and install to Bangkok?? :D

These windows and doors are all produced by ARC Chonburi. (German design, TUV approved etc etc) They are real top quality :D and last for 50 years.

  10. I am building a new house in Si Sa Ket and I am having great difficulty in trying to source decent European/Western windows and doors.

There's plenty of local firms who do wood and aluminimum frames, but none who do PVC frames of a high standard.

I have found previously that the wood and aluminimum frames are either not long lasting or maintenance intensive. Hence the requirement of decent frames.

Does anybody know or can anybody recommend decent installers / manufacturers????

  11. I may be wrong here, but, I was under the impression that immigration need to see 400,000 baht come from abroad EACH and EVERY year. Top ups are not allowed. They want to see you SPEND 400,000 baht each year.

You show 800k/400k for the retirement/marriage visa extension for the first year on a Thai bank account. There is no rule :D that this money must come from abroad. During the year you can spend all that money and top it up 2 weeks before renewal date. You can do this in the same way every year. Nobody can stop you from doing this except:

Immigration officials will ask questions what you do with the money, you do not have enough money for living :o etc etc . But the money should come from abroad etc etc. All silly questions.

If you don't like to answer then go to a different officer at another Immigration office.

  12. The first time I applied in Bangkok for a 1 year visa based on marriage to Thai they refused with the remark you are over 55. Asking if this is the rule a nice lady insisted that everybody over 55 must apply for a retirement. We showed them all required papers but they gave me a retirement.

The second year we came across the same lady :o again and asked again for a 1 year based on mariage. Again refused but this time with the excuse you can not change the visa type anymore and you do not have enough money for living. You should have far more than 400 k on the Thai bank account, you have no new income from abroad. Asking about this new rule and presenting other bank accounts with sufficient money the nice lady :D asked for house papers, photos of the house and her business, my wifes bank account etc etc. and finally gave me a retirement again. Besides that I was told the only way to change visa types is to leave the country and start the whole 1 year visa procedure new.

PS: The nice lady has left that office and I obtain other type of visas from an other Immigration office. :D

  13. Guys.

I have a real problem replying to messages using Yahoo. I compose a reply, click the "Send" button and the screen comes up with a blank message, the reply having disappeared.

I have checked it out with Yahoo and followed their instructions but the problem continues. Yes, I can change my email provider but I would rather like to keep to yahoo.

    Any solutions plese?

    Same problem lately.

When the screen comes up with a blank message, click the back button. The original message re-appears. Fast double click on send button helps.

Same problem with new :o Yahoo photo mail. Yahoo recommends fast double click on send button.

  14. Would anyone recommend a saline unit, alongside the pump and filter for their pool? Is the added expense worth not having to add chemicals every week?

You still need to add chlorine or bromine for a disenfectant which adds more expense on top.

Swimming pool owners tend to use to much chlorine. Americans recommend 3 ppm CL which is 3x above the australian standard. Modern spas and pools use a combination of automatic chlorine feeders and ozonators. This enables reduction of CL level to less than 1 ppm. An ozonator is 3000 times more effective than chlorine. The injected ozone turns into oxygene after 3 hours and provides a very pleasant smell :o and is very gentle for the skin.

I use the above combination for my 16 m pool and I am very happy. No more stinking chlorine soup, besides that the costs for CL are reduced by more than 50 % :D .

For further info do a search for 'swimming pools'.

  15. Does anybody know if a Yellow house registration book can be used in place of a letter from immigration confirming your address when applying for a 5 year driving licence?

    Cheers

    Benaster1 :o

I obtained a 1 year driving licence with the tabien ban (yellow). No problem at all.

Another foreigner here obtained a 5 year driving licence with the tabien ban (yellow).

PS: It is a real advantage :D to use the tabien ban (yellow) outside the very big cities.

And how does one set about getting a 'yellow' tabien baan?

I am on my second 'Thai Wife' visa extension, living here with Thai wife, in our own home. I am named on the blue tabien baan as father of my 20 year old daughter (who has dual nat. and Thai ID card also).

    Where do I go? Amphur?

    What do I take?

    How long is the process?

Help much apreciated, for same reasons: five year driving licence acquisition imminent.

    Cheers

You are named on the blue tabien baan of your wife. This is sufficient and even better than a yellow tabien ban for driving licence renewal. Keep in mind your 1 year Thai driver licence must be expired to obtain a 5 year Thai driver licence.

I think it will be difficult to be registered twice at the same Amphur office. First in the blue tabien baan of your wife and then in a separate Falang tabien ban yellow.

    You can try:

Take 2 witnesses along, the punjay ban of your Moo ban and the real owner of the house with tabien baan , 2 photos, Passport with 'Thai Wife' visa. Explain the Amphur office that a 'Thai Wife' visa is a longterm visa and you are here for 2 years. They will write down a history of you and this will all be signed by the punjay ban of your Moo ban and the real owner of the house.

    Good luck

  16. 10 years ago Disneyland negotiated with the Roi-et government to set up Disneyland here. Market survey showed that climate is a key factor. All year round profitable because of the ideal climate. It failed because of water shortage. A business like this requires a lot of water. Now this problem is solved.

  18. I dont know about a Non Imm O but last year I got a new tourist visa there.  When they gave it to me I was told to apply for a Non Imm next time I come.  Since then I have been back to Aus and got a Non Imm there.

I will need a new visa in Mar of next year so will try Savannakhet for that.

If you decide to go to Savannakhet, I would be interested in seeing how you go.

The actual consulate is only about 5 mins walk from the ferry terminal.  Not sure what the opening hours are but last time we got there about 9.30 am and put in the application for tourist visa.  We were told to come back at 2.30 and it would be issue.  Right on 2.30 they came out with the passports for all that were waiting.  Back across the river into Mukdahan by 4pm and home by 5pm.

Looking forward to hearing your results for the visa run.

    Sezzo

Thanks a lot. So the Thai consulate in Savannakhet is customer friendly.

  19. Does anyone have experience obtaining a Non-Immigrant Visa O at the Thai consulate in Savannakhet Laos and what are the opening times and requested papers.

Is it easy to obtain or should I go to Vientianne?

A little bit of information would help a lot ... eg support retirement ?

I intend to get a Non-O 3 months first in Savannaket and later in Mukdahan a 1 year Thai wife support visa. The requested paper work varies a lot depending where you apply so I would like to hear what is required by the Thai consulate in Savannnakhet.

  20. I am thinking about putting in a pool can you guys give me a ruff idea of how much your pools cost. Also I live in N/E thailand anyone know of a Pool company operating in the N/E.

I tried Global house in Khon kaen but no one new anthing about swimming pools which suprised me as while back there where some fiberglass pools out the front

The only one building small swimming pools around here in Isaan is Home and Pool from Pattaya . Ask for Mr Vichapol 01 838 8042. He built 12 meter pools in Yasothon and Suwanapum. He provides good :o after sales service. My 8x16 m pool was built by another comp.

The large ones in Isaan (25 meter) are all built by Pool and Spa Bangkok.

  21. Hello Roiet - I was told by an engineer friend of mine that white cement is used to line many pools in Australia - is this the same 'white cement'? Or is it only a sealer unsuitable as a final finish? I wanted a white swimming pool, but not tiles. My builder has suggested what is locally known as 'hin cut', cement with differing sized aggregates and colours, but worried about the possibility of algae. Do you have any experience with this product? Also, do you know anything about those 'Floatron' water purifying discs? Are they just expensive frisbees? All any information gratefully received.

This white cement is only a sealer. I would highly recommend to use large sized tiles for a pool in this climate. It prevents rapid grow of green and black algae.

Floatron is just an expensive frisbee.

Keep chlorine at a level of 1 ppm and PH around 7.5 and use a UV filter.

    Happy swimming :o

  22. He,he - yes will see how it goes next week!

Not so worried about the drivers license - but want to obtain my international drivers license from home country first to ease the procedure. Cheers!

Obtained my thabian ban yellow showing 2 witness.. signing the 3 page document that I live in my place. Had to show a long term visa. This is written in the law book.

With the thabian ban yellow, international licence and passport I obtained my thai driver licence in 15 minutes.

PS: Tabian ban yellow helps a lot. Thai driver licence helps more.
