  1. Can anyone tell me what the hotel is officially required to include in its price- I have to quarantine for one day, and was wondering if the hotel is obligated to state the price of the transportation from the airport to the hotel, and the cost of the RT-PCR test up front.

"Some reported that hotels were only charging for rooms in the packages they advertised. Hidden charges for things like mandatory transfer from airports and ATK and RT-PCR test costs were not included."

  2. "There is a lot of variation in how this is being handled.   I know one school paid 1/2 of the salary to any employee who was out of the country, but had a bank account in Thailand.   They will get the other 1/2 when they actually return.   The school also allowed them to have another employee pick the salary up for them, but they had to contact the coordinator and it had to be in writing (email was OK).

The contract goes through April, so most would be entitled to the April pay regardless of being in the country or not."

Was that a government school, Scott?

I imagine that there are variances according to one's contract and what an individual school chooses to do. Ultimately, I'd like to find out what, if any, policy has been instituted by the government, as these are government schools. I'll keep looking and report anything I find.

    Thanks for your replies, everyone.

  3. Hello all,

I hope everyone is in good health at this unfortunate time. There's a lot of uncertainty and pain, although there's also time for reflection, which is good.

I was hoping that someone on Thai Visa might have some accurate information about government schools being required to pay teachers' salaries for the month of May. If you could provide any English-language sources in the form of a website, that would be brilliant.

    Cheers

I got the bus on Thursday Ekamai to Pattaya, three and a half hours, the Bus Stewardess said we stop for for 20 minutes at the Filling Station, it was less than 20 minutes from Pattaya, but invariably we had too wait to round up the stranglers so it was longer than 20 minutes.

i have done this journey recently, 2 hours non stop but in general two and a half hours.

This was the first time I have seen a Stewardess on the bus, she was telling everyone too put their seat belts on, 5000 baht fine she said if you get caught.

"...we had too wait to round up the stranglers..."

Note to self- don't take the prison bus in an attempt to save money.

  5. I stayed at Hotel Mingood on Argyll Road in Georgetown, it's a decent, quiet hotel and the daily rate is reasonable. They can either call a cab who will take you directly to the Consulate for a fixed rate (and wait for you and take you back for the same rate) or you can use an in-house agent who charges a nominal fee for taking your visa to be processed. I took the train from Thailand the first time I went to Penang, I thought on several occasions the train would tip over. The contrast in line quality between Thailand and Malaysia is stark; the Malaysian side's tracks are smooth and rock solid, while the Thai side is sometimes dodgy.

  6. I think you have the right idea. The next time someone infers that you're an escapist, you can direct them to this website, ask them to enter their locale, and enter Bangkok (or another Thai city), then compare the costs of living: http://www.expatistan.com/cost-of-living

You can also refer to the warm culture, weather, natural beauty, food and wide range of places to live. When they see the results of the cost of living comparison and know the other factors, they should understand your rationale. If they don't, it's up to them.

  7. You may try Chaiyaphun (the city is nice, the province very beautiful). I've been there a few times and don't know about any burning going on there and it seems to have clear air and is very quiet.

I agree, Chaiyaphum is lovely, has a lot of natural attractions like the mountains and caves (check google for a list) and the weather is generally excellent from Halloween until the end of January (very clear and warm in the daytime and cool at night). Chumphae is a nice little town (technically in Khon Khen but very close to Chaiyaphum) which has a couple of modern places to stay and a large Tesco Lotus. I haven't experienced the widespread burning in Chaiyaphum or Chumphae that occurs in the north, but perhaps it does occur.

  8. I have A Rh- blood type, I would donate if I could, but I'm not in Thailand until August. I will donate as soon as I arrive.

Perhaps the ThaiVisa community should look into establishing a list of blood donors. If we do this, we can more easily help out Nanapat and others who find themselves in a similar situation.
