  1. I use tahr puppy....

It can utilize ubuntu tahr packages. Best thing is, it loads into ram. If you don't save anything, All traces disappear when you turn off the computer.

    Pretty slick.

You can save on the thumb drive that you boot off of....if you need to.....or just put everything you want to save on dropbox, etc.

Great backup...and great way to carry your own operating system around. I used to bring mine to the store and plug it into a laptop, before I bought it. (With permission)

You can actually keep a backup of your system on dropbox, if your laptop gets grabbed/confiscated by customs.

    Nothing on the hard drive!

  2. The main problem you face is that Thai university degrees are not held in the highest esteem internationally, for reasons which have been extensively detailed here and elsewhere.

They are not regarded at all outside of Thailand

What a load of BS. You certainly don't have a single clue as to what you are talking about and therefore your opinion is worthless. Love of how this forum loves to sh#t on everything about Thailand. /s

As a long term frustrated employer, I can tell you that what he says is only slightly exaggerated. There are, however, a few good Thai Universities that have acceptable standards. The problem here has been that many universities sell degrees to students. As an employer having interviewed 100s of Thai Graduates in various disciplines, I found that only 1 in 128 was able to answer simple questions about their subject. These questions being easily answerable by 11 year olds in the UK. As I have discussed this problem with the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Education over the past 30 years, I do know what I am talking about. Education standards must be greatly improved in Thailand and there must be no more selling of degrees, nor issuing degrees merely for attendance. For these reasons, overseas employers certainly do not hold Thai University Degrees with esteem, with only a few exceptions.

    "1 in 128 WAS " lol

cat is out of the bag ....

  3. No problem entering. Immigration will want to see funds for her stay, your letter may be adequate, or may not. The big problem may be not Thai entry but Philippine exit because they control the exit of women leaving PH. She needs to call the PH Immigration service to get cleared on what's needed for her exit.

Yes. The Philippine immigration and departure will be screening her for those things. Maybe even more.

If she gets out of there, she should be ok for entry. (visa exempt)

Cash is something everyone should have, when they travel. 20,000 baht would be more than enough....

I believe Thailand accepts many other asian citizens for tourism. They would not discriminate just because she is filipina.

Just the normal onward/return ticket, itinerary (maybe), cash (look it up), and accomodations / address.

  4. I don't see the argument about a car stopping more quickly than a small motorbike (when going the same speed)

For example....the more weight you have...the harder it is to stop. Cars need better brakes...because of that fact. Then buses, then tandem trailer trucks, then trains.....

Can't use the brake excuse. Nobody considers that a motorbike stops in about the same distance a car does, The heavier vehicle always has better brake, but the weight negates the effectiveness.

In all the countries (40) I have driven in, you are wrong if you are not driving safely (following to close). The car in front of you is not wrong, as they were only reacting to an emergency. The third vehicle never had contact with the one in front of you....and is long gone, anyways.

400 is ok....don't see that as excessive, as she was a cheapskate on her insurance.

  5. I told my girlfriend to bring her passport/id and do the checking in.

    Problem solved.

    Kind of original...

I wait in the car. We did this in Vientiane and all over Thailand. She would always get better prices, anyways. After she signs in, she waves and I come get the key before she actually pays. I then text her to pay, once the internet, aircon and amenities pass inspection.

She is now my wife. Thai, but can speak a bit of Lao.

  6. 90 day report online works. Fantastic success for the last 3 times in a row....4th time is next week (first 3 was on last year's extension, this one is the first reporting on the new extension). Udon Immigration only 2 kilometers from my house, but I save the 10 baht gas money and do it online anyways. I only report in person to renew my annual extension

Really doesn't matter where you are...if you do it online, but good to notify them of your current address (as said above)

  7. Communication/language and music

I don't think I will ever be fluent enough in Thai to enjoy a discussion about my hobbies.

Songs I grew up with have no meaning to anyone here, which is also a barrier.

I do try to learn Thai, and try to speak some phrases...but having studied French, Japanese and Tagalog, I find the language difficult for me to remember.

Not sure what I would talk about anyways....probably food and bad driving.

  8. Another option is to buy an onward, refundable, ticket with your credit card, on another airlines.

Get a receipt, print out the ticket, then cancel it.

Be extra careful to read the cancellation policy.

I had one horrible time convincing Norwegian Airlines that I rated a refund (my mom was to fly here, but was hospitalized)

There are many tiny, rules involved.

Refundable tickets are more expensive...but as long as you are refunding it (and using a credit card), it should be fine.

    .................................

Additionally, I did the same thing you want to do, but I just stayed overnight in KL. They have 700 baht cubicles (like a coffin) on the bottom floor. You get a public shower/toilet, a bed, wifi and a tv.

I flew back into Chiang Mai, and the immigration officer had to ask his boss a lot of questions. (many entries previously)

I now have the proper visa with retirement extension.

  9. Just did my 2nd online 90 day report; ( last one was sept 2015) I had left between then an now a few times so didn't need do the 90 day rpeort...

took all off less than 5 minutes

    didn't put in flight number'

    4th page

    Step4 : Acknowledgement (TM.47)
Notification of staying in the Kingdom over 90 days (Online)
along with the transaction date /time
    TRN
    Bar code;
when i go check status it says pending
and also list my last online report
    wow, Well done Thailand

    Same here.

Three successes so far ...3 reports. Not much of a problem but I had to dust off IE browser (something I never use). Once I got that clicked, i have the site bookmarked...and a copy of all the info in my document folder. I open the folder and plug in a few lines here and there...and bam.

Doing my fourth in about a week or two....if any new problems ...I will post.

Make sure all your ad blockers and ghostery (I use them alot) are off...and no vpn (I use vpn on Opera and Firefox)....

probably will want to enable javascript as well...should already be on...but some people turn that off for security reasons.

  10. Anyways...the answer is no.

It is not congenial nor respectful, to be paying the bill, but having others control the food.

With my wife, it is fine...as she knows what I can and will not eat.

Strangers act like they never ate Som Tom before. They order the same thing every single time.

When I go out, I am hungry like everyone else. Nobody cares if I cannot eat their food...they push the krap in front of me and then take what I ordered. Now I just sneeze on it. lol.

  11. This bothers me as well. I am generous, and pay the bills....however, whenever we have a group lunch, I never know what they are ordering. Some Thai foods I like, and some I don't. My wife's sister pulls the most weight, and orders all the dishes I cannot eat...without asking me. I decide to get something I can eat, and out comes a little plate of beef, pork or chicken. Now everyone enjoys what I cannot eat and then starts fornicating my food with their eyeballs. Now here comes all their forks...and I am lucky I get one clump of decent meat in my gullet.

Bottom line...I pay the big bill, but get the smallest amount of food. I had to stop doing this altogether. Now I let them go out on their own, and I go to the french restaurant down the street and get my portions.

    Bull krap.

  12. Mine literally smothers me with love.

I have to chase her away, sometimes.

Really! She is very traditional about marriage.

I tend to take advantage, and sometimes I get impatient, but we are a good couple.

If they love you, you will definitely know. If you are not sure...then watch out.

I would not want it any other way. The answer is, there are still a few good ones.

  13. No more than normal,it's just becoming more visible due to an increased use of social media and the like.

Agreed, in the US on the other hand there's a definite increase

    another topic..perhaps.

    However...I will bite.

Most likely the violence is initiated by "NeverTrumpers". Democrats also have the ugliest, most violent form of protestor.

    Is that what you mean?

    Actually...the topic is thailand.
