  1. I also suggest buying a bicycle and using it to get to those places. Take the back sois. You'll find some really unique things in this city if you're not riding the bus or in a taxi.

Yep, a lot of what you'll see are packs of rabid Soi dogs who like nothing better than chasing Farangs on bikes and biting their legs.

Putting down aggressive soi dogs would be a great cure for boredom, just like hunting would be. I dont think its illegal and would benefit the community.

You could attach some spears and swords to your motorbike that could be utilized quickly. Could even detach heads if your good enough i suppose. Like jousting.

It would not be surprising if the community hunted "you" down for doing this....as many of those "soi dogs" actually are owned by Thai's. A common mistake, though. Your point is valid..your method is a bit dangerous.

  2. Some folks want to be close to the "action"...pubs, restaurants, and the shopping. That all comes at a heavy price...both physically and financially. Only few make it through the years without battle scars. It may be healthier to live in a more serene environment. Too much fun is actually bad for you, and leaves you numb. Living where you can enjoy some scenery and having enough room for some hobby, might be better. You can still visit the fun places, once or twice a month, and actually save some money. I live 15 kilometers from a large city, and enjoy the variety of life. We head into the city twice a week, for the cravings....but also enjoy a quiet, easy life in the countryside. Sometimes, on a whim, we pack up a few things and just go for a long overnighter. Anything within five hours...(thats a big radius). These overnight trips bring new ideas, and keeps me fresh. I always keep a hammock in the car, for those scenic spots. Also have a bike rack for two bicycles on the car. That lets us tour around freely. (good exercise).

  3. You would make it easier if you understood the correct terminology.

I do believe you are looking for a non immigrant O or OA...

After that...you get "Extensions" based on retirement or whatever category.

Don't feel bad...many posters refer to their extension as a visa..and it confuses newbees. I think there are good explanations posted here...

  4. We had visitors to our home (in Chiang Mai) two months ago. They wanted to see the Elephant Reserve..(the good one in Lampang), so we took them.

After we toured the "museum", we were all escorted on a trolley..to see the elephant show. On the road ahead was and object, which appeared to be, at first, a small tree branch. Somebody sounded the alarm, and now I could see it was a large cobra, poised for a strike. All our legs were exposed, and the trolley was only going about 10 kpm. My leg was on the cobra side of the vehicle! The driver just yawned, and turned the steering wheel to the right, crushing the cobra, with a satisfying popping noise. He never even looked back. The rest of the tour..on foot, was spent worrying where the next one was.

  5. It could be a big problem what happens if they overload the grid , with AC use we will be doomed.

I have managed with just an aircon in the bedroom ..and sometimes no aircon at all...for 20 years.

There are ways of keeping cool. Our 4 bedroom home has marble floors and a huge upstairs area. All the heat goes up...and the flloors keep the lower house cool, with just a fan. Even up to 33 degrees outside is fine. We keep a garden and trees for shade, and most of the house is protected from direct sunlight.

I would not want to be without an aircon if the temp went to 35 or higher...but I could manage. 40 degrees and I would be gone...as I do not want to be indoor a whole season.

  6. Made so many mistakes in the philippines, that I have managed to do pretty well.

Bought property there...did not buy here

    Married there.................did not marry here

Had kids there...............did not make kids here

Spent all my money in a bar there........saved tons here

will not and can not live in a "condo" and would never do that again anyways...good.

save tons renting a home (all that extra money goes in the bank gaining interest)...can't buy here anyways.

rent is 5000 a month....no down payments on houses or condos....great thinking...gives me freedom to relocate....good. That half million down payment I would have to sign over to a thai (wife or whatnot) is still in the bank ...for an emergency or home purchase where the law allows me to own.

shoebox apartments are droll....love my one rai/5 bedroom home.

    patting myself on the back...good.

  7. ..did not work for you, should be in the title of your post.

worked fine for me...and many others. Most positive step forward Immigration has taken, for our convenience. I am sure improvements will come.

Sorry...but I seen far too much criticism, and many should first see if they are even qualified (there are limitations for using this), if you have been here a long time. It took me 4 minutes to complete this time...and I received a response in 24 hours.

Your post reads as though nobody can use it.

Most common errors for the unsavvy are not clicking the icons and selecting dates/nationality. Also wait for the proper code at the bottom. Clicking away at frustration will end in failure. It is not TV friendly....but once you get the hang of it...works.

  8. Definitely a new thing ...did mine in udon 8 months ago. No visit.

also...never needed to open a bank account here. Just showed them my income deposits in my bank back home, and the affidavit from the Embassy.

There is a complete laundry list....(i think it's pinned or under the visa section). Never did medical before either. Also, just had a copy of my lease (no id/book from home owner). Will at least get the copy of the ID/owners papers this time, but will forgo the medical (unless the issue comes up again). Have to renew my extension in January.

  9. Really amazed that after a 10 year marriage you and/or wife were not aware of this - the main reason for tourist visa refusals for those actually making tourist visits is fear that they might be considering what you took as an option, As she had the tourist visa am sure at the time issued was made clear only good for a short visit (but understand that may have been years ago). You at least have time to make plans and if health improves perhaps can actually be together during the immigrant visa wait (if the plan is permanent stay). You might check if there is some compassionate grounds available if indeed you can never return to Thailand.

The US Embassy has a very clear procedure outlined on their website. Tourist visas are not what one uses for settling down in the USA.

I do understand that we are able to settle down in Thailand on non immigrant visas. (extensions of stays on non immigrant O visas..for example).

USA is about is strict as it gets. Hope your post persuades others to read the US Immigration website. When I formalize our marriage with the US Embassy here in Thailand....I will certainly not expect my wife to immigrate to the USA on a tourist visa.

  10. 75 years ago they walked around topless.

    the change is apparent.

The women are ok. I think you are disppointed that they prefer their own kind..or asians. I think that is more to do with peer pressure. Asians have been becoming more and more capable of supporting many wives. This country is ripe with mia nois ...who prefer living on the edge. Multiple partners...etc.

  11. For us...it was that I had no address in the USA, since 1995. (Yes ..20 years straight living in southeast asia). They also asked why I did not work (unusual, as I am retired military with some disability). We were told I needed an address in the USA for six months, and could reapply. My income is enough, and my wife is self sustaining..(owns property/car/business...and has a daughter in college ).

Worked out for the best, as I am waiting for my son's documents to be completed (in the Philippines). I will travel with him and setup a home in the USA until he obtains employment. The home will be leased in my name. Once he is stable, I can fly back to Thailand and apply for a tourist visa. Surprisingly, my (live-in "wife" of 5 years) has done her research, and is not thrilled with living in Oregon. Her married friends all want to come back here and live in Thailand. Her two daughters live here.. We save a bunch of money, and can live very well. My social security will start in two years....and we will have bought/paid for...all our requirements by then (debt free with 3500 usd a month). It is quite an adventure.

The US Embassy actually did us a favor, by turning her down. The exchange rate went from 29 to 36 since her refusal..and all the negative news in the USA has really turned us off. Her friends in farangland are soooooooo envious that she can stay and live with me here (for now).

Just wanted to say....sounds like your income/job description ...did not cut it. Perhaps she had applied for a visa recently with another guy? My guess is that she sounded vague, and they figured you wanted to marry her there.

  12. No sweat...used it twice with opera.

It would take me less than 10 minutes to do a 90 day report from my armchair.

    Only three small problems....

    1. On the opening screen, you have to scroll down in the window (within the page) and click on the understanding requirement.

    2. If you are American...click on American (duh) don't look for USA as it only refers to territories.

    3. After entering the coded letters/numbers....wait for it to register..takes more than a few seconds...do not keep clicking it.

I know there are issues of people that have to leave thailand and reenter, because they been here quite a while.

I think some people are trying to jinx this great, easy to do reporting method by saying they are not capable of figuring it out.

Other than that....any reasonably intelligent guy should be able to wade through the 10 or so questions.

  13. I live in a house that would rent for 2500 usd per month...back home in upstate NY. I pay less than 200 usd a month here. 4 bedroom/4 bath. Five years ago, I was getting less than 30 baht per usd....now it is close to 36. So with the low rent and exchange rate, I am saving quite a bit. Would not save a penny back in New York. Utilities are cheaper too.

I would say that I am saving 30 percent of my income by living in Thailand. Even though all the things I did not mention...are almost as pricey as back home.
