  1. ARRGGGHHHH!!!! Went to eat at Sukishi tonight, NO DEBIT CARDS!!. There was a sign outside written in Thai but "debit cards" was in English so the good lady was with me and I got here to ask why they were not accepting debit cards. The greeter just shrugged her shoulders and said cash money only or credit cards. The wife then asked the cashier why and he just mumbled something about signal no good.

I have been thinking about this now and I recall a post on here about Thai banks doing a major maintainence excersise, I wonder if this is the fallout from that??

  2. Some places just refuse to accept a Debit Card. No idea why, as they are Guaranteed payment if the card is processed through their machine and accepted by the issuing bank.

This is also my view on the matter, if I can I prefer using my credit card then if there are any problems you have still got the cc company on your side but if you use a debit card the money is taken out of your account straight away.

I had a terminal that I used for taking payment for my business in the UK and always prefered debit cards over credit cards and they were also cheaper to process.

Maybe I have just been unlucky or look dodgy!!

  3. I have just done this, you will need a letter of consent from her parents and this letter must be stamped by each of her parents amphur which ever one is on their ID cards, we had to do a lot of running around and her dad had to take a day off work.

, without the stamp you will not even be able to check in, she will also need a passport , yes even for Singapore.

We went to Vietnam with my gf niece and this is what we had to do

100 % true. Been there done that got the T shirt. You will need a letter from the childs parents notorized at the local amphur. As stated you will not get past Thai immigration. It can be a very costly procedure to overlook

  4. Thank you all for your help and discussion.

I went to HomePro and bought a tank and pump from them on their advice(?)

The pump is an Hitachi WM-P350GX which they have on special offer at 6,300Bt; cheaper than the 300 model (it's the squat rectangular "constant pressure" type). It maybe over spec. but will certainly do the job

    Time will tell...

What size tank did you buy in the end??

  5. With this combo of parents, you might clarify what citizenship your son has.

Never heard of the amphur being involved in such a letter. Usually just your husband agreeing, I expect, with a signed copy of the data page of his passport.

    Mac

Been in this situation before, quite scary. The I/O had to call the childs father as his name was on the birth certificate. This was eventually accepted by immigration. When we were eventually cleared to depart I asked the I/O how to avoid any problems in the future, his reply was to get an authorization letter notorised at the local amphur.

  6. I thought there would be a charge but I have used this method three times now and have never had any charges applied this end. Maybe they factor the charges into the exchange rate

HSBC have an offer on at the moment, £4 per transfer. Money comes into my Kasikorn a/c same day with no further charges. I do send GBP and the conversion is done here in Thailand by Kasikorn at a fairly decent rate

Maybe worth a look but do not know how long this "offer" is on for.

There should also be a currency conversion/receipt fee applied by K-bank as shown below. The fee is most likely applied "before posting" to your account so that can make it appear no fee was applied. Typical of Thai banks...for example, Bangkok Bank charges the same fee. I think the min fee for SCB is Bt300.

    Product Fee
    0.25% of total deposit amount
the minimum fee is 200 baht,
the maximum fee is 500 baht
  7. I booked a car with Avis or Hertz, cannot remember which, booked online but couldn't pre pay online with a Thai card.

No problem picking the car up with my Thai licence, card and address.

However when I returned the car the final price was double the original price, thankfully I still had the original booking details with me and the guy did a manual override, took him a while though.

It's worth remembering that car hire companies have a pretty large excess these days and whilst they do sell, expensive, excess cover, it only reduces the liability. You might want to consider buying stand alone before you travel, they're a lot cheaper and cover the complete excess.

Came across a program on BBC I Player last week,"Watchdog" and there was an article on there highlighting all the problems from consumers about Avis adding extra charges to the original booking. I was suprised at the amount of complaints throughout the UK & Europe

  8. Purchased the hand held one on Friday from Powerbuy at The Mall Bang Kapi. There is a demo salesman with two of the models on display. Same price as Lazada, 2590 Baht. Tried it out on the gas hob when I got home works ok. Same pressure as one I had in UK, 3.5 BAR

  9. I came up against the same problem as op. They would not let me open another a/c. I went online and used the banks (Kasikorn) live webchat to customer service. I explained to them what I wanted and they told me yes I could have another a/c with no atm card to "park" my money, just go into my branch and ask. I told them I did not have a work permit just a retirement visa, no problem they said, just go to your branch. I then told them that I had been refused, "ahhh, there is nothing we can do as it is up to the individual branch" So I just went back asked a different person and they opened another a/c for me.

I really do think it is the luck of the draw and the ability of the clerk to speak/understand English. I always have problems as well when I need the bank letter for my extention, they are totally confused and just dont know what to do. So my advice is just keep trying

  10. We went earlier in the year with a 4 year old. Flew Emirates who had a deal on at the time. Booked everything ourselves. We stayed in a Hotel near an underground station and this made it so easy to get around. The train goes direct to disneyland and we purchased a two day ticket. This enabled us to see everything there and we went later the second day so we could stay and see the fireworks. There are lots of local people offering trips but if you get a guide book it is so easy to get around and see it yourself. Ocean park is a good day out and the little one loved seeing the animals there.

I dont know how you are with food but my g/f struggled a bit with somethings but we found some good sushi places and she enjoyed that.

Just a heads up for you the little one we took lives with us and has done since just after she was born, she is the child of the g/fs niece. When we got to immigration at swampy we had a load of trouble and I did not think they were going to let us take her out of the country. After a great debate they phoned the childs mother who is far from the sharpest tool in the box and this really made things worse (she really is thick and did not understand who she was talking to). My g/f then managed to phone the childs father who confirmed we has permission to take his daughter on holiday. After great debate again they stamped the little ones passport and wrote in it we were taking her out of the country by verbal agreement. Things had become a little worrying so I asked the senior I/O what we should have done. He said next time the parents should go to the Amphur and get a notorised document giving us permission to take her.

Despite this worrying start we had a fantastic 10 days and I am sure you will

  11. Took my Acer Laptop (3 years old) to the Acer service centre at Fortune Town. The first thing they do is enter the serial number in their computer and tell you what warranty, if any, is on it. I purchased my laptop in the U.K. but they still had all its details here. Should settle any disagreement.
