One group of jetski scammers are alive and doing well on Pattaya beach.
A friend has observed 3 incidents during the last week involving the intimidation and heartless robbery of young foreign jetski renters on the beach opposite the Pattayaland area and the shop called Honest Gems.
All 3 incidents were staged in late evening and involved the same policeman turning up to "arrange" the deal.
The victims were young asians perhaps arab or indian and looked liked they were left penniless after the scam.
An undercover squad needs to set up there urgently with secret cameras-publicity is the only solution.

If so, no more cowardly than the Shankill butchers or the Paras in Derry.

Don't be fooled by the "Land of Smiles" BS the government tourist promoters peddle to foreigners.
For many poor Thais life is a constant struggle between what they see on television as the norm and what they have to do to survive ... especially in Bangkok or Chonburi.
Life in Thailand can be a daily struggle and many people are right on the edge of exploding ... all it takes is one spark to ignite the fire.
The life style they see in those soap operas on T.V. is something they just can't afford....and they are frustrated and ready to explode.

I would like to add further that the often semi- psychotic assaults on 'farangs' stems from this reality also.
Ordinary Thais are teased and frustrated by daily exposure to the unreachable world of the 'soaps' and the equally unreachable spending power of the 'farangs'.
The world of the soaps is ephemeral but the sight of 'farangs' drawing down many multiples of a Thai's weekly wage at ATMs (just for a night out) makes for a very real object of psychotic rage.

This report comes from Chualalongkorn University which in my opinion is itself part of the problem.
I visited the campus last year and saw hundreds of white-skinned students-the progeny of the Chinese Amart. I saw only 5 browned skinned people and they were sweeping up leaves.
The deadly equation goes like this;
white-skinned amart=wealth/influence.
The equation is cummutative.
My friend went into Siam paragon with his issarn male friend recently. In the elevator the issarn guy was rebuked in thai by a little old chinese lady who waved the keys of a top model car in his face- just for being there it seems. To my friend's amazement the issarn friend hung his head and made no reply.
This issue is more than skin-deep.

Thailand's love affair with the bussed-around newbee cheap-charlie tourists and it's evident indifference to the 'traditional' high spending 'farangs' is puzzling until you think about it a little bit. The stake holders in package tourism are the 'already rich' amart and they care little for Thailand's small shopowners, bar owners, guesthouse owners etc. Tourism accounts for c.8% of GDP but accounts for c. 15% employment. The package tour crowd want to REDUCE the numbers in tourist employment to save costs and this is understanable from their point of view. What's incomprehensible in that the Government is encouraging this trend.
Traditional 'farang' tourists spent an estimated 25 time more per head than the package groups from China, Russia etc. YET europeans, americans etc. are given a miserly 15 day overland visa extension whereas another country's citizens (who can't afford even a 30 day visit) are granted 90 days. WHAT'S going on?

He can relax; no political repercussions from this speech. It was made in english to a non-domestic audience and reported in a farang paper and probably nowhere else. It's my firm belief that nobody reads english here so foreign seminars, articles and letters to the ed in the two local english language papers, social media outrage in english (including this forum) are not heeded and if viewed by a small minority are used to whip up further xenophobic hysteria. The only time a little panic flickers on the faces of the amart is when the world bank or gurus like moodys singl out Thailand and say things that might threaten the course of the money gravy train here.
Could be facing legal action for speaking out against the government along with those who speak out against the rice scam.He's not too popular with some in the cabinet as it is so this won't endear him in any way, that's the problem with this government as they can't handle criticism or the truth.

Christian dog-eaters.
This is a bit off the point but I've just come from Cambodia where I visited a rural family living not far from Angor Wat.
Since I last visited, the whole family (except for the oldest son), has been converted (brainwashed) to Christianity by a bunch of Korean missionaries. (Apparently very plentiful in Cambodia now)
When these obnoxious people come on their regular preaching visits they request dog for their evening meal- the result being that the father has slaughtered all three family pets to placate them. One of these dogs was the special pet of the oldest son and he refuses to convert.
The christian korean pet-eaters have encourage the father to ostracize the son unless he comes around the the korean christian way and the FATHER HAS DONE JUST THAT. The son is now living in a small room in Siem Reap.

No. Chinese is just as hard if not harder for Thais to learn than English. Even the grammatical structure is in some respects more similar to English than Thai. For example, while we say "a red house" the Chinese also say "red house" but the Thais say "house red".
As you say, the realisation of how different languages function is a major point.Degrees - If you are a native speaker with a degree, it is more likely you are the kind of person who is trained to learn and has a reasonable level of academic ability. Both are useful when teaching. It does NOT guarantee a good teacher.
I also suspect that most posters here are unaware of the theory behind TEFL and its purpose. Actually I reckon that most native English speakers have absolutely NO idea of how their own language functions. It is one of the benefits of being bi or multi-lingual that one is able to see how different languages function.
Lots of posters have vague ideas of "standards" of English "proper" English or "correct" English - most of this belies a profound ignorance of how language works, how teaching it works and how English works
It has to be said that most teacher training in EFL is attained "on the job", but a good one month TEFL is EXTREMELY INTENSIVE - it is generally considered that the best time to do this is directly after you haver doe your degree as if you leave it later your study and info retention skills are diminishing.
Europeans especially are exposed to the idiosyncrasies of other European languages. So when a European comes to Thailand it's fairly easy to realise that all Thais are doing is translating Thai to English, without any grasp of language structure - yellow taxi, taxi yellow for example, plus the open the light.
Without exposure to other languages, Thais will be caught in this Thaiglish situation.
I know absolutely nothing about the Chinese language they learn. Is this Chinese in a similar structure to Thai and is therefore more straight-forward for Thais to learn?

When the ASEAN thing happens in 2015 there are going to be an awful lot of thais who will wonder "What the **** happened ?". They have been sheltered too long with the artificial thought that Thailand is the centre of the universe.
This is a misconception. The ASEAN project is not based on the EU model. The expected free movement of labour for instance will not happen for many years after 2015 I believe, certainly not into Thailand. The spirit of ASEAN will be more along the lines of voluntary participation with much more autonomy on the part of the members than in the EU. The difficulty for SEA countries vis a vis introducing english as a linga franca is that the big linguistic/cultural brother on the block is chinese and a common language with local roots would take hold more easily. The region is doing well whereas the western sphere is on the rocks with or without english -depending on which country you focus on. Thais are a practical people- they operate on a need to do basis and they learn on a need to know basis. Hence the level of english in the Pattaya lady bars is higher than in the universities. If prosperity is seen to require more english they will find a way to learn it, it won't be a top down process from any ASEAN initiative.

That place I guestimated makes over 3million baht a month, not a bad earner.
I visited this sanctuary 5 years ago. We, the tourists , were walked with 7 or 8 tigers (held by small junior monks) into a dug out quarry. I remember thinking that if the tigers freak out there's no escape. This is perhaps the first of these places and is the subject of many documentaries. I'm convinced that it's a (scientifically) pointless project- a money making gimick. These tigers can never be returned to the wild and it's possible that they were originally poached from the wild. Any by the way- what business is it of monks to be running zoos?

Thai television soaps are ALL about money and ratings and NOT AT ALL about entertainment .There is one plot , minimal variations of which are shown on each channel.Here in "The Land of Smiles", people only cry , scream and yell . Women constantly fight , slap each other , tear each others hair out .Men abuse and rape women ( even if the latter is not graphically shown )My wife , university educated sits glued to this trash on channel 7 . I question the mentality that watches this RUBBISH , I cannot be in the same room with it . Had I seen these programmes before coming to Thailand , I wouldn't have come . All these programmes give the impression that Thais are ignorant Brutes and that the seemingly pretty girls are airhead , spoilt brats , perfectly horrible , that you wouldnt want to know at any price .Talk about scriptwriters , what scripts , virtually non existent . Statistics say that Thais read on average one book a year and many don't read a book at all . For a nation that doesn't read , where are you going to find anybody that writes , or a scriptwriter .When I first came to live in Thailand , there were comedy soaps with mature and credible actors and actresses , one is sick of seeing the same juvenile faces in every soap on every channel .
You've said it all, I couldn't add another meme. I don't have a wife-university ed. or otherwise-but that thais watch what must be the dregs of human expression is depressing in the extreme. Is there there some ethnic psycho-pathology being exposed here? It often causes me to question the mental state of people who watch this thai soap garbage. Cornation Street et al are high-brow compared to what passes for drama here. Is nobody concerned about the influence of the violence and spitting hate of the female Divas on young children for example? Why do I even bother replying to this?...nobody is listening, they're glued to the knife in the Diva's clenched fist...

I like this but posting comments like this or writing to the editors of the 2 english language papers is a WASTE OF ENERGY because the thai shakers and movers can't read english. Even if someone tells them about farang outrage their reaction will be one of contempt even to the point of reinforcing the behaviour out of warped nationalistic spite.Please Yingluck, if you have any balls at all, do not give this oxygen thief the satisfaction of resigning, sack him from the party immediately. Display some Leadership. This guy would have lasted nano seconds if he did this in the UK or the States.

Relax, go to the beach or to Patpong and leave it to the Thais...maybe also open a Cambodian bank account and plan for a dash to the border when people really wake up here.

This time I'm on the gal's side. As GSrnz posted , both sides lived up to their promises. The lady no doubt realised during the courtship she had a real live one on the line but when she reeled him in and had a good look at him she quickly threw him back as inedible. Both can move on: she to fry bigger fish and he to go from being a f--kwit to just being a dimwit.

I've seen many 5 -on-1 attacks, one 1-on-1 assault (a thai doorman kicking a paraletically drunk farang), a thai brute beating a lady black and blue beside a covey of mosyke taximen. There was one 3-on-3 attack involving doormen and customers in Walking St last year, BUT the brave doormen had guns- one customer drowned after all three jumped into the sea behind the seafood restaurants. As to your question -about as many as I've seen dodos.

Oh have I ever seen a brave Thai man? As many times as I've seen a dodo .

Is it not a fact that teenage pregnancy is at crisis levels here in Thailand? It's caused by casual unprotected sex involving boys AND girls. One side is no more to blame than the other but that is rarely stated. I had a shophouse renovated recently and I witnessed groups of young mathyom female students arriving all the time offering sex for fun to some of the young cambodian workers. I noticed that these guys acted awkwardly during these conversations because it quite simply not part of Cambodian culture for young women to throw themselves at the boys for sex. It's of course not universal here but it's very commom. Ok, don't ask the disco owners, the parents or the teachers-ask the BOYS.

However, the norm in Thailand has always been that parents must protect the daughters from the boy's and the girls must go along on that effort - including being careful not to dress provocatively or provide any reason or opportunity for a boy to make a move; while at the same time there is typically NO effort towards teaching the boys the dangers of getting a girl pregnant and moreover any lack of responsibility in terms of sexual activity is not his fault because he's a male.This case is one of abuse-pure and simple. A ten year old mother is a child that has been raped into the condition.
The general epedemic of teenage pregnancy now sweeping Thailand is not due to rape but to consentual careless sex between young people. I've lived here for nearly three decades. A portion of that DJing and managing bars and discos - I need not consult anyone on "up for it" young ladies are, especially given that I spent my youth enjoying that phenomena.
You need to read my post again and see if you can work it out. I personally don't regard women who are open to sex as "slutty" nor do I think and did not imply that all girls DO go along with the traditional mores that their parents tried to impose; I am VERY. Aware of the incidence of sexual activity amongst young women in contradiction with what they are supposed to want and do. Having said that, I Iive in the THAI society of every day normal middle to upper class Thais and have done so for decades. As such my experience and perspective is broader than someone whose familiarity with Thai and SEA society is perhaps limited to bars and discos and I can tell you that not all young Thai women are represented by those found in such places.

I happen to be an early retired head primary teacher(28 yrs. experience) now living here. I'm a dedicated practioner of discovery learning and as such what passes here for learning is painful in the extreme to me. I would dearly love to get into just one of these "chalk and talk" rote memory anti learning buildings and kick ass left and right. But I won't lower myself because here in Thailand the only professionals NOT PAID an amount equal to a western salary are foreign TEACHERS.My wife's daughter goes to an "upgraded" school in BKK. Her daily "English" lesson consists of copying a paragraph from the board into her notebook. Doesn't have to read it or understand it, just has to copy it. I'm sure there is lots of opportunity for improvement on something like that.
On a similar subject, I wonder how the Tourist Police are doing with their "fluency in English in six months" that was promised, oh, about six months ago.
They may also consider hiring some actual teachers instead of backpackers with easily-purchased TEFL certificates straight off the copy machine, who just want to stay longer than their tourist visa allows so they can party and bed as many young girls (or boys) as possible. There are loads of qualified retired teachers from the states and UK who would probably love to take on some work - or would the incompetent Thai teachers then 'lose face'?

An acquaintance of mine won 22 million. He has the money ,he collected himself, that was about 8 years ago.
This almost an answer to the question but not fully as it refers to a winning incident 8 years ago.
Is there ANY person out there in Thai Visa world who knows for sure if the national lottery has a rule about this or not?

I have a simple question as follows- if foreigner buys a lottery ticket and say wins the jackpot will he /she be paid directly? I've heard all kinds of answers including yes, no, through a thai person only, maybe, who knows, are you crazy etc. What is the truth. Thanks in advance.

My thoughts exactly.
Nobody in real life could be as dumb as this guy after all that has happened to farangs in Issarn.
We even have a poster advising him to buy a house but not until later. When will farangs ever learn that they CANNOT BUY A HOUSE IN THAILAND THOUGH THEY WILL BE EXPECTED TO PAY FOR ONE.
Thais can buy houses and apartments in London and football clubs in Manchester and they actually GET WHAT THEY PAY FOR.
