  1. agree, I can remember running round the street freely when i was young, but my thoughts were that children in the UK seem to have alot less freedom - what with media coverage freaking everyone out - in thailand it does seem that kids have more of a chance to play freely, although again I suppose that is dependant on where you live.

  2. Wasnt sure wether to put this in Teaching forum, but figured there are lots of people with children on this forum and would be very interested in your thoughts on this.

Ive just finished studying International perspectives on childhood and it got me thinking about children in Thailand compared to the West. For example, do you think kids have a lot more freedom in Thailand compared to the overprotected West and what do you think about what it means to be a child in Thailand - as it obviously differes between socities.

Would be interesting to hear your thoughts......

(Mods, please feel free to move this if ive put it in the wrong bit)

  3. From google, I found some information that there are 10 shower rooms at the Public Transport Centre.

    (This building)

(From the map, i think it's bus terminal building)

Anyway, I've just made a thread in Thai forum(pantip) and asked people about the location of shower rooms ..If i get any information there, i will tell you then.

Thanks Bambi x the info is much appreciated :o

  4. Hey guys, just found out from Air Asia that my connecting flight BKK to Chiang Mai is cancelled meaning I have to take a later one :o

Can anyone tell me if there are any showers available in the new airport, as I will be pretty minging after 24 hours travelling and could use the time to get ready, so I can head straight out when i get to Chiang Mai :D

I see that alot of the lounges have shower facilites, but wondered if anyone knew availablility for 'normal' people. Any info would be greatly appreciated, cheers.

  5. With regards to the face painting, in the photo provided in the Andrew Drummond report, you can see some dots above her left eye - looks like face painting in the kind of full moon party style, maybe not a colour such as red as some people are speculating. If this is the case then if would have been fairly subtle no?

  6. Thai police are obliged to interfere if there is trouble brewing, even if they are off duty.

I have never ever seen a Thai policeman intercede in a Tha/Thai domestic dispute. I've seen them watch though.

A very valid point - from beginning I found it very hard to beleive that a Thai would get involved with any kind of incident such as this - ive seen for myself people walk right past withough even a pause when domestics are taking place. Surely there must be some other reason for the cop to have got involved

  7. Thanks for the replies on that guys. The reason I ask is because I need to find a school to do a study for one of my International perspectives assignments for university. I was hoping to do it in a Wat/Government school but I also can only come during Songkran/Easter so that puts those out of the question. No worries though, have some links to an international school, so will base it around that.

    Cheers, Soph

  8. Hi, just been looking at flights from Bangkok to Chiang Mai for my next trip in March. Air Asia have them for 399 baht (rising to just over a 1000 with tax etc) just wondering if I should book them right away - if the fares are likely to start to rise nearer to the date. I would prefer to wait a little longer just in case the plans change at all - have flown with Air Asia a few times, but cant remember if they raise prices nearer to the time, any info would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

  9. Living in Hat Yai before, Krabi was the teachers' weekend destination as its only about 5 hourse on the bus. We used to go there every other weekend and stay in Ao Nang in some really cheap huts (mountain view?) sometimes we would just stay around Ao Nang beach and relax or we would go over to Tonsai or Railay depending on the mood (and finances). My favourite place to party was the Luna Bar, which was always the best fun. Tonsai was more relaxed, just to sit an sip beers and we only really went to Railay to take photos as it seemed super developed and expensive - although if you wondered over to the other side it was different although not a scenic. I love Krabi and had some of my best experiences in Thailand there. Also, there was a very good pizza place in Krabi town too.

  10. I guess it doesn`t matter too much which country is more polluted Thailand or China they are both really bad. When I am in Bangkok at least when the sun shines I often see blue sky. When I go to Guangzhou it is always very hazy .I forgot to mention earlier although I think its an asian thing as well but the Chinese love diigging holes and leaving piles of dirt everywhere.

    regrds Ercorn

Neither do I. From my experience in China ( '01, '03 & '07), having been to Beijing, Shanghai, Xi-an, Hangzhou, living in Guangzhou for over a month twice in '01 & '07. I had not yet to see a clear blue sky not even a single day in China, it is always hazy as the OP mentioned. Is this got to do with the certain time of the year ? As I found out that I usually gone to China around the beginning of the year ( Jan - Feb).

Also, everytime when someone talking about the pollution in the US. I couldn't help but wonder am I missing something here. I say this as for a person who had spent years living in Hawaii, Miami, NY, Tampa, I never once experience a polluted air. I always feel blessed with gorgeous clear sky days. :o:D

You should be sat where I am right now - my office is looking out over the Tian Shan mountain range, with the sun setting to the right and the most clear blue sky that is here most days. Im in Xinjiang and it is a truly beautiful part of China. Im sure its hazy during the winter months, but the summer here is a lovely time.

  11. Wow - thanks again, its good to hear info - have done lots of research into the region and it sounds quite fascinating. We will be doing some school trips into the mountain areas, and on arrival I will find out more about getting to Kazahkstan. Getting really excited now! Looking forward to seeing these rope walkers too! Thanks again.

  12. Interesting thread - im going to China next week for 2 months and was wondering how it is for single female travellers? I will be mainly in the North West and Xian. This is a huge step out of my comfort zone that is for sure!

Not sure how far northwest you'll be going, but Xi'an is great. I assume you'll be going to see the Qin Shi Huang and Terracotta warriors. One tip, make sure to hire an official english-speaking local guide at the site who knows the fantastic history of the area as he guides you through the site. It takes a few hours.

If you're going as far as Urumqi, in xinjiang province that is an entirely different culture altogether, and they speak a turkic tongue. Some of the best tightrope walkers in the world come from the gypsy tribes there.

Also, regarding being a female single traveller is generally no problem, but did I understand you'll be travelling alone for 2 months around China and you don't speak Mandarin? That would be very difficult, as English can be non-existent outside the major cities, unless you have someone meeting you everywhere or advanced planning. Can you give some more details?

Thanks for the advice - sorry for not getting back sooner, not been round here for a while. Just to confirm, I will be working in Urumqi at an English summer camp, so am not travelling for all that time. Hoping to pick up some language during that time.
