You don't need a visa agent for the Z Visa and you can do it on a tourist visa or visa exempt if you have all the documents. Chiang Mai is more friendly and less crowded than Bangkok. You need a Foreign Experts Certificate and some other document (government approved invitation letter or something) from your employer. Fill out the application, take some photos, and apply, and you'll have it after a few days. If you have the foreign expert certificate already you are set. If not you might have to send them documents first.
I believe you have to validate your university degree these days to get it, so if you haven't done that, you might have to go home to do so. It might be impossible to complete the application from Thailand because of this.

Your Embassy in Thailand should issue such letter - it is standard from USA Embassy if you apply for a passport through them.
Is this recent? I got my new passport in Bangkok a few years ago and did not get any letter.
When I went to immigration they said I would need a letter, but let me move everything over and for me to just go get it and come back sometime in the future. I never did as I had no time to go all the way down to Bangkok, haven't had any trouble on subsequent visits

Was required to fill it out for a tourist visa extension in Chiang Mai. Previously was on a non B in a different province and never did it.
Certainly don't consider it a 'triggering experience' though.

I did a tourist visa extension there a couple weeks ago and it literally took 15 minutes. I arrived around 9am was in a songtheow back to CM 20 minutes later. You don't need an agent

I spent a few days on Thai friendly, seem all ladies want be paid for sex only. bkk seems better.
so what s wrong in Pattaya? where to find normal ladies?
What's wrong with Pattaya? It's the largest brothel in the world. There are thousands of prostitutes there and most of them are on Thai friendly looking for customers. So looking for girls in Pattaya on Thai friendly, almost every one is going to be a prostitute. Furthermore, the normal girls in the area will be driven away because of all the Pattaya sex tourists who expect to get short time from every girl they message (or they'll give in and become hookers too)
You can meet normal girls on Thaifriendly, but it'll be a lot harder to do so looking in Pattaya. Set the location to something other than the worlds largest red light district.

Recently sent a registered letter to the US. Took 25 days to arrive. Something is broken on the Thai side, the problem is not just to the UK.

Plenty of them working for the government as civil servants, teachers, etc. Never seen a ladyboy police officer, but then again I never see female patrol cops either. There are probably some working in administration somewhere.

Part of the problem is requiring people to go to the immigration office that has jurisdiction for their area, instead of letting people use any office they want. There are simply too many foreigners in Chiang Mai. And even worse, Chiang Mai Immigration covers Chiang Mai, Lamphun, and Lampang provinces. So you have foreigners from those provinces that are required to use that office too. I'd be better if Lampang was turned in to a full service immigration center, and Lamphun was transfered to there.
I've used offices in other areas and in some places you are in and out in 30 minutes. Many people would be happy to use another office even with additional travel time, as they could turn it in to a mini vacation as well. Going to Phitsanulok would actually be faster for some, given that you can be in and out in 30 minutes.

This is going to make it impossible for most Thai schools to employ foreign English teachers. Double entry tourist visas were a necessity even for people that intend to work legally, in order to cover time while waiting for paperwork or changing jobs. Schools recruit people on tourist visas and then they transition to non B. I imagine the majority of schools will soon find it impossible to employ foreigners now, the hassle and expense will just drive people to better paying jobs in China.

But on just $300 that doesn't seem like enough for visa runs, health insurance, or that it would leave anything for emergencies etc.
Some people don't need visa runs. Work permit, married, retired, etc. But if they do than a single visa run will eat a lot of money so that is a major cost that many don't consider.
Lots of people are young and healthy and don't feel the need for health insurance. Or they have Thai government health insurance through work and are happy with that.
Just because someone spends little doesn't mean they have nothing for emergencies or they are not putting money in the bank every month. The ability to save lots of money is one of the reasons people live here. If you have 60k income and only spend 10k, clearly you have more for emergencies than if you were spending everything.

The languages are very similar, you can get by. Almost everyone understand central Thai, because Thai media is so common. Kinda like how all English speakers easily understand a California accent because of Hollywood. The opposite is not true though, central Thai speakers will not understand everything a Lao person says. Most Laos people will understand this though and speak in a way you can understand.
Laos people in tourist areas are also a lot better at English than Thais so you can just use that anyway.

The school will get rid of him if the other parents know he is a child molester.
Teachers working without a permit is very common, it's quietly tolerated because there is a shortage of foreigners willing to work for poverty wages, they aren't likely to do anything there. Most foreigners work on a tourist visa at first prior to becoming legal anyway.
You need to focus on the molestation, and obviously get your kid out of there in the meantime.

Not a troll thanks, Bartender 100! I saw this on Reddit, and wondered what the hell it was about:
I did Google it, and I did have a look on Wikipedia, but I also found this:
So all in all, it was a bit confusing, hence why I asked!!
Cowpat, that first link you have there is a fictional role playing game where people play the roles of various countries. The guy playing as Thailand in the game deciding to 'build' nuclear reactors.

Thyey are only done in Bangkok but you can request one by mail. See: http://www.pcscenter.sb.police.go.th/eng/
When I click on 'apply for clearance certificate via mail' it says that it is "For an applicant residing abroad only"
Is that a mistake? Can foreigners residing in Thailand really do it by mail?

There has just been a major crackdown on the immigration office at the Cambodian border, because the bombing suspect says he bribed immigration officers to gain entrance to Thailand.

If the OP's story is true it is probably due to this. Best bet is probably to try flying in as that border is likely to be very difficult at the moment

It's short term, so toughen up
Some people can't 'toughen up' where this is concerned. A few nights on one of those Thai rock matresses will leave me unable to walk.

Get a teaching job out in a rural area. They will take a non native speaker out there. A lot of schools have teacher housing, find one that will let you stay for free. Live like a monk and save money and get your visa sorted out. It might take a while but you can survive.
How is he going to get a teaching job without showing his passport? He is on overstay as he needs to pay 20.000 Baht at the airport, or have I missed something?
In rural areas a lot of schools are not fussy about paperwork and they don't understand it anyway. Many schools have teachers employed with no work permit and they don't know or care what visa they are on. They will look at the passport front page to see the nationality, but they don't understand the visa stuff at all and aren't interested.
Obviously there is a risk involved, but it beats starving to death on the street in Bangkok. If he's careful after a few months he should have the money to pay the overstay and get a new visa.

He would never say stuff like that to the child of a Thai parent, nor would a Thai parent ever tolerate it. He is being deliberetly disrespectful and harrassing your daughter because you are a foreigner. I think your first instinct to go put him in his place is correct

Funny how you didn't explain the "argument." What was that about? What did you say? There are lines in every culture--maybe you crossed one here (I'm not going to waste time mentioning them...they should be apparent).
He can't explain the argument because this entire story never happened.

Being able to speak thai is important for 2 things, dealing with rogue police and for random dinner table chat. Thats it really. I think most thais prefer it when they think farangs are 'fresh' and dont speak thai (especially potential dates)
The only potential dates that prefer guys who can't speak Thai are the kind you meet in Pattaya.

I don't think l ever got a receipt from any Thai consulate for any of my visas. The most I ever got was a stamp FEE PAID or the same text in French stamped next to the visa.
At Vientiane I got one, but I had to ask them for it. At first they just handed me the passport with no receipt.

I do read domestic violence is quite prevalent in Thailand. She tells me that people don't want to get involved in man/wife disputes. Even once when she called the police he grabbed the phone and told them it is just a husband/wife dispute. Is this true??
Yes, many people will ignore violence in a husband wife dispute unfortunately. So why isn't she telling people this is not her husband? People would not ignore a woman being attacked by a strange man at the market. The police wouldn't ignore a home invasion and rape. Why didnt she tell the hospital that man is not her husband? That that man is a stranger who attacked and tried to rape her?
This story makes no sense at all. Why would she put up with a stranger invading her house, raping her, beating her, etc for some crappy temporary job? Are you sure this man isn't her husband?

Then you are fine. When I did it I didn't need to authenticate, just background check, wasn't sure how to do it from Thailand. I did it in Chiang Mai, it was super easy. You go in, take a number, wait like 10-20 minutes, get your number called and you're done like 2 minutes later.
