Sounds like a good deal for both the car and minibus. Is that 7-11 easy to see, entering past the border into Nong Khai? Or do you have to round a corner to see it?

7-11 is about 100 meters or so on the left when you come out of immigration.

Many tuk tuks and taxis will try to get you on the way to the 7-11. That's where the cheap ticket offices are near 7-11.

I once got a tuk tuk for 300 baht...drank beer all the way...feet hanging out the back ????????????

  3. In my experience the employer doesn't have to cancel the visa. It will expire if not renewed at the date which will be already stamped in your passport.

When I resigned I had 3 weeks until I had to depart and get a tourist visa

I did hear of a case where the employer wanted to be difficult and cancelled the visa leaving the employee with 24 hours to leave the country.

The WP expires in the same way. It's tied to that specific employer as they were your sponsor.

  4. I wish I could have afforded to be an alcoholic in my 30's!

I agree, Discipline is the key and if the OP cant do it then hes slowly killing himself. Ive been in a similar position myself. All too easy to take a beer when in the heat and socializing.

I found that small changes made a big difference but I have always had other interests like golf, cycling, swimming, cooking and photography. I had just become lazy and somewhat depressed. I had to force myself to get back into these activities and now im enjoying life again. Still drinking more than I should but being from Scotland I cant see that changing.

Get your interests back is my advice.

  5. Put your energy into something more than the small village shop. In my opinion its a total waste of time and money. Why bother?

Because he actually cares about his new family...unlike some of the other emotionally crippled misanthropes marooned here by the cruel hand of fate. There are 2 types of people in the world: those who brighten the days of others and those who drag a grey cloud of misery wherever they go. Go ahead and ask yourself which group you belong to.

    Hope the father recovers.

But could it be OP wants the wifes family off the GRAVY train. Lets be real.. see things as they are not what you want them to be!

OP is talking $10 in their heyday. Op could support them on $7 a day-he wouldnt feel it one bit.

Lets hope the OPs Father in law recovers. I wish him all the best.

Its an honorable thing what the OP is trying to do, however as a realist I really don't think its worth the time and energy. If that is seen by some as a negative thing to say then so be it.

  6. I recently had two friends cross at Friendship Bridge, Nong Khai. One Danish one USA citizen. Both were given the 15 day visa exemption, not 30 days.

The member states of the G7 are the United States, United Kingdom, France, Canada, Italy, Japan and Germany. They are collectively known as the "Group of Seven,"

Explains why the Dane didn't get 30 days no reason why the American didn't though...maybe he did not remind them of his entitlement?

Yes, you maybe correct. I think it ws just a dozy/lazy immigration officer. I have a triple entry 60 day visa and had to point this out to him too.

  7. Udon is great for a night out and girls. Two farang areas that I know of and the Thai clubs are usually okay with farang clientele. Lots to see during the day too, down at the Central Mall.

I don't know that street corner where the Lao girls hang out.

    Never been to burri ram

  8. Ive been chased many times when out cycling and walking, when in a pack they will start to circle me just as they would hunt in the wild, it can be pretty scary.

Sticks and sprays work, but I would say their is a huge market here for an sonic dog repellant that works. Surely one must exist? Does anyone know?

  9. I've seen this guy around town many times and never seen him cause any trouble at all, he just goes about his day in a quiet way. Never spoken to him but I hear he is a friendly laid back person.

Why he wants to look like he does I don't know. But isn't this freeland. Give the guy a break

  10. Dont buy the family anything mate, they will bleed you dry.

Educate and enable them but never just give. Thats my opinion.

My wifes family call me cheap charlie, but thats ok with me. Ive worked hard for what i have and know the value.

  11. I see this kind of crap every day here in Thailand.

If you give, your wife, and her family will just take, and then take more.

The saying comes to mind "give a man a fish, he can eat for a day. Teach a man how to fish and he can eat for the rest of his life" or something similar.

Im all for helping people to help themselves.

  12. Came in on a European flight recently and they announced on the flight that $25,000 or equivelant needs to be declared?

It was a $20,000 USD for a while, maybe it's changed now? I'd confirm it before risking bringing that much without declaring. Or just declare it if over 20k, it was a very painless procedure anyway.

Nope, still $20,000 (U.S.) as per the Customs website.

I have never known such as a simple topic produce so much misinformation as taking currency in or out of Thailand and back to or from another country. Now it looks like even the airlines want to get in on the "make it up as you go along" party. Which airline was this?

    Austrian

  14. as we have no signed agreement i dont think that is possible?

You maybe able to get this guy into an Australian court on the grounds that you 2 geniuses had a verbal loan agreement, but even if you did catch up with your so-called friend, the money has probably long gone by now and as they say; you can`t extract blood out of a stone.

The only other chance you may have of getting all or some of your money back if the guy has any assets, such as a property back in Oz land. If not than I`m afraid it`s a hopeless case and if you decide to try and take matters into your own hands, than you do so at your own risk and discretion. Either way you are backing a loser.

He has no assets, just his health. No family even.

Hes paying now so lets see how long it lasts.

Its not really about money anymore
