I tried to use BUPA and because I have high BP (controlled by meds) they ruled that anything to do with the circulatoiry system wold be pre-esisting. I ask even the heart and they said yes. Don't have heart problems now and hope not to any time soon.
I kept looking and found TravelGard. on the annual medical plan they cover pre existing ( at a lower rate) if you sign on for more than 3 months. I bought the standard policy of 1 mil coverage which allows 50k to do pre existing. ( do have bad back). After studying the cost here, If my back does go out, I really think 50 K will do the trick. Recently had a claim and they paid in full quickly.
Negatives
Have to pay bill first and wait for reimbursment
They call it world wide coverage but willnot cover you in US or Canada.
I can live with above negatives. I have the 100 ded. plan and it is cheaper than I could buy insurance from my company where I retired. Actually less than half.
I am a happy customer.

Issan equals peace, tranquil, beauty, food, retirement, laid back, friendly peoples, and scenery. What else are you looking for?

The family jewel thing almost got me in trouble also. The guy that lives across the road from my wifes home grabs anyone new like that. As I have taken family and friends there Ihave to warn them of this guy. I ask the wife to find out why he does this by askinghis wife. She said no way. It is annoying but he is harmless. Also as you say if this was in the states he might not get away with this but in Thailand????????????????

Bkk 90210 you are a dream child as I wish my family was as supportave of me movng to Thailand. With support like that your Dad will make the transition with little effort.
Luck to you all.

Ray, can you check and see if HOMINY is around. It has already been thru the slaked lime process. The only drawback would be cost. Other than that smash it up and finish the tortilla recipe.
I did an eairler thread about GRITS. Would be cheaper than hominy. They said some restruant in Udon served them. Think it would workby mixing 1/2 corn meal and 1/2 grits . We haven't done this but I feel should work.
Just curious.

Ray, looks like we will have to plant some corn and start making Masa.

Sorry did not mean to confuse. Was trying to add input.

The information Ihave received from the counsulate is you have to apply in your home country to start the retirement visa.
-
An actual site that might be more helpful is the udon forum. They have a lot of folks from Nong Khai
-
Amen on the Issan folks, Ray.

First I want to say that these are some good points both pro and con. I also think hte last poster has started to hit it right. It amazes me to go to Bangkok and see some top flight Isan eateries. I also beleive that you will see in the future a lot more emphasis being placed on the northeast for industry, tourism, retirement, etc.
Beware Isan is on the rise. Why do the folks in BKK want to move out and one of thier destinations is ISAN>
-
Thanks Random Chances. That was a through and correct reply. Very interesting.

They have a border post but you must have lao visa before you get to NKP. In other words you must get visa in BKK before you go to NKP or your home country.

Rototillers
in Isaan
First let me say that I am not in Thailand. On my many trips there I have seen tillers, so I am sure they are available somewhere. What I am attaching is a site here in the states. They use to shipo overseas but not sure if they do now or not. These are top of the line tillers so not cheap but very good.
Just an option.

YOu are a little off on what you ask for Ken. What you are looking for is all natural, drug and hormone free beef. If a cow if fed all corn they will die. Need a bit of other grain. If a calf has been fed in a feed lot he most likely is getting hormones and drugs for sure to prevent diesese. I would prefer a free range beef finished in an all natural feed lot. If processed correctly and cooked properly, it should be some of the best beef you have eaten.
My only source of information is reading, there is not anythong like that in Thailand. The mardet is growing rapidly here in the states. Don't think the increased cost would work in Thailand. I could be wrong.

I have not eaten the French Beef but I will say that there is more than breed that goes into a good cut of beef.
1. The first thing is the selection of beef cattle you acquire.
2. It is the environment and quality of feed that the animal uses.
3. It is the up to the abitor and butvher. It can have perfect items 1and 2 and if not done right or aged right, the beef will not be good.
4. Actualy it is the same as 3 except now we deal with the preperation. It not done properly 1,2 and 3 make no difference.
the last factor that foes into this is personal taste. 1, 2, 3 and 4 can all be done perfectly but if you do not like the taste of that chef using, then all is for naught. Surely you have sat beside someone and they are just thrilled with a meal and you have the same thing and you wonder what planet they are on.
I do take recommendation from readers and plan to try the French Beef in Thailand. Most likely I will be in the love it catagory as I have read about this operation in Sakon Nakorn. Sounds like they do o good job on items 1, 2 and 3. Now it is up to the purchusar to do 4.

Don't think you will get much response on NKP hee. This would be my city of choice to live in but there is just not the level of infastructure that I feel comfortable with here. The river area here is beautiful. I have been to the city many time and only see the occasional falang. They are around though. One guy owns a travel agency there and a really nice guy.
The city acroos the river in Loas has some great French design on buildings if someone had the money to restore them. I was told once that NKP will never be a tourist spot and that keeps it quite. That is good but I think there is a lot in the area to offer.
As stated above just not enough infastructure for me.

Its amazing what can be done whenyou toot your own horn. Have not been there but love Issan. There really is quite a bit to do and see in Issan. Lets hope the world doesn't find out too much.
